H

ey readers! This May issue is jam packed full of fun for Mother’s Day, Star Wars day, Cinco de Mayo, and so much more. We cannot wait to share it with you. Mother’s Day is Sunday, 9 May, and if you have not figured out what to get the special Mom in your life, we have some ideas. Okuma is hosting a Mother’s Day Weekend; be sure to check out pages 18-19 for details, and to see the Hai Sai “Hello” Summer event! Haisai means “hello,” and it is Okuma’s introduction event to all we have to offer before summer begins. Kadena Arts & Crafts could be a great stop, too, if you need party decorations or balloons to celebrate Mom! The Party Place located by the Frame Shop can assist. Check out page 41 for details. If relaxation is what she needs, Risner Fitness Complex has discounts for massages and new workout gear. Check out pages 24-25 for info. Don’t forget the Enlisted Club Mother’s Day breakfast, or the Officers’ Club Mother’s Day brunch deals either. The Summer Reading program with Kadena Library launches in June, but registration starts this month. Check out the theme and details on page 42, and stay tuned for more information about prizes. Speaking of summer fun, Hagerstrom Pool opens on 1 May! The slides and splash pads are calling your name to cool off this summer; page 34 will give you all the details so you can begin to perfect your cannonballs! Emery Lanes is celebrating Cinco de Mayo all month long with bowling specials! Stop by or check out page 35 and see how you can keep the party going. Oh, and if you are looking for a party, this month the Rocker Enlisted Club Complex turns three! We are celebrating the 3rd anniversary with a Star Wars-themed party, of course, on May 4th. Check out the specials for the whole day and details about the event on page 8! As summer ramps up and you are looking for ways to keep your kiddos and teens busy, don’t forget about the Teen Center and Youth Center! Stop in for a tour of the facilities and learn how to become a member. Also, follow along right here in Venture magazine for a list of their planned summer activities! We are so glad you pick up our magazine and read along with the events coming to our community! Don’t forget to check us out on Facebook, Kadena Force Support Squadron; Instagram @KadenaFSS; or our website www. kadenafss.com ! See you next month!

OUTDOOR RECREATION

by Meagan Abell

I

n military life, May signifies two things: One, summer is coming! Two, PCS season! Fortunately for both of those scenarios, Kadena Outdoor Recreation is here to help.

Emily Rary, Director for Kadena Outdoor Recreation and member of Team Kadena for the past three years, told us here at Venture: “Many people don’t know that Outdoor Recreation is not just Outdoor Rec for equipment rental, trips, paintball, and archery, but also includes the Kadena Marina and both of the Kadena pools (Fairchild and Hagerstrom).” Whether you are looking for equipment to set out on your first on-island camping trip, a relaxing day at the pool, or to get scuba certified, Outdoor Recreation is here to help set up your entire summer itinerary.

Rental Equipment When outdoor recreation comes to mind, does the visual of a BBQ complete with bouncy castle, corn hole, a rental table and chairs, and a tent pop into your head? All of that and more is available. Planning a birthday party, squadron event, or trying to accommodate a group for a dinner party can be a lot easier with a stop by the facility located on Beeson. Or, if you are brand new to the island and waiting for your household goods to arrive, you can go ahead and start your adventure. With scuba and diving rentals, camping gear, or even a lawn mower to keep your grass tidy, the options are great. The complete equipment rental list and pricing can be found on our website, kadenafss.com/outdoorrecreation.

Trips and Guided Tours With all the options of adventures, where to start could be the biggest hurdle. What if someone planned a trip, hike, or activity in advance, and all you had to do was pay a fee to tag along? Naoki Uchida, Recreation Specialist, has been a trip and tour guide here with Team Kadena for 12 years! He is proud that the list of activities ranges from hikes on island, cycling tours, river trekking, and off-island trips to mainland to ski, cycle, or climb Mt. Fuji. Uchida stated that they have trips for every age and level of experience, including kid and family friendly options. Stop in and chat with him or one of the other recreation aides to learn about on island, off island, or overnight trips with guided tours.

Kadena Marina Located just a mile or so out Gate 1, Kadena Marina (part of the Outdoor Recreation family) is a little oasis right next door. With a small beach perfect for setting up activities, a shop full of diving equipment to rent or purchase, and crystalclear waters, this should be on your immediate list of stops. The Marina also boasts an itinerary of boat tours all year round, a fan favorite being the Whale Watching tours every winter when the whales are migrating through Okinawa waters! In addition to tours, you can become certified to rent and ride a Jet Ski,® or rent your own boat and head out fishing! However, don’t let boat licensure stand in your way — you can always hop on a scuba or snorkel trip with a guide right from the Marina. Water sports are a huge attraction too, and Outdoor Rec is hosting a new series called “How-to Watersports” where you can be taught the basics about stand-up paddle boarding (or “SUP” to the experts out there), surfing, or kayaking. Be sure to check out which watersport they are featuring each month, sign up in advance, as space is limited. This is the best way to become confident in a new watersport through expert advice and supervision.

Pools Looking for lap pools year-round? Fairchild Pool, located close to Gate 3, is where you want to be. Open seven days a week for lap swim, in addition to hosting occasional classes and trainings, the Fairchild Pool is designed with fitness in mind. If you are looking for recreational swimming, Hagerstrom Pool (located by the Library) opens 1 May! With their beautiful adventure slides, splash pad, and covered table area, this is a great stop for families in the summer. Aquatics, part of the Outdoor Rec family, hosts certifications for lifeguards as well. If you are looking for a summer job, check out the requirements and courses on our website, kadenafss.com/aquatics Throughout the last year, group and indoor activities have provided a challenge to facilitate due to the pandemic. Rary was bursting at the seams with pride for her team: “I have watched the ODR team create and modify activities for our Air Force family that would be COVID friendly and safe while still getting people out and about, and I could not be more proud of them for all of their hard work.” If you have concerns about COVID and restrictions, please know that Rary and her team with ODR keep your safety in the forefront of their plans. You will always be guided with information that tags along with the most relevant guidance from our leadership and compliant with social distancing.

"Kodomo no hi" (Children's Day) by Meagan Abell

A

popular stop for tourists in Okinawa is to see the “koinobori,” or “carp streamers,” every May. Annually at the end of Golden Week, the Japanese celebrate a national holiday “Kodomo no hi,” or “Children’s Day.” It is held on the 5th day of May every year and the “koinobori” streamers are displayed to represent strength and resilience in Japanese children. Typically, there is a black streamer representing the father; a pink or red one to represent the mother; and one per child, often in blue, orange, or green. Samurai dolls are also displayed as a symbol of vitality. Other traditional activities for Children’s Day include eating “kashiwa mochi,” a sticky rice cake filled with red bean jam and wrapped in oak leaves, as well as a custom called “shobu-yu,” or bathing in iris leaves. The iris leaves are thought to bring good luck against illness and ward off misfortune. While this holiday has been celebrated since ancient times, it was originally called Boy’s Day and celebrated young men and their fathers. In 1948, the Japanese government changed this to Children’s Day to celebrate young women and express gratitude toward their mothers as equals. If you see “koinobori” this year, please share your pictures with us! We would love to see them @KadenaFSS on Instagram, and use the hashtag #FindSomethingSpecial.

highlight for us every month is looking through all the photos our readers tag us in! We love to discuss whether or not we have been there, add it to bucket lists, and, of course, share our favorites with you, the readers! We are so grateful for all the gems shared, and please keep tagging us. Here are a few standouts from this past month. Instagram user @ZaydaBorros showed us her whimsical side while literally frolicking in iris fields in the Kunigami district here in Okinawa. If we close our eyes, we can almost smell the fresh florals! Be sure to add this to your IG bucket list while you are here. We love a good Instagrammable moment, and Okinawa is full of beautiful murals and urban art for just that! User @simplierosie is showing us a perfect example of this right in the middle of Naha! If you find a beautiful or funky piece of street art, strike a pose, add the location, and give us a tag; we cannot wait to see it too. We don’t know about you, but here at Venture, we are forever on the hunt for the perfect boba or bubble tea! @MeganPicha calls it a problem, but we call it a solution to any issue. There is nothing a good bubble tea can’t solve, and we want to know where you find your favorite. Thank you for sharing with us, Megan! As always, be safe and follow the rules, but be sure to tag us when you find something amazing, and we just might share your image right here in the magazine.

We can’t wait to follow your adventures!
