EDITOR’S LETTER
It’s gonna be May! May you never get bored because it is yet another month full of celebrations. Your ever-trusting Kadena FSS has all the fun festivities for you to enjoy. Let’s begin with our feature story! Okinawa’s Dragon Boat Festival, also known as “Haarii,” is upon us so check out what this Japanese festival is all about and the amazingly strong women who are going to battle it out on the ocean this season.
As we bid goodbye to Spring and welcome the Okinawa Summer, Kadena FSS has prepared an abundance of outdoor activities for you and your family. Back for the summer, ITT’s pool and lunch passes are back so grab your tickets and enjoy a day at the Moon Beach and Manza Beach Inflatable Park. If you prefer staying on base, Hagerstrom Pool is opening back up on weekends with a kick-off celebration this month.
There’s more! Kadena Marina is celebrating Cinco de Mayo with a Cinco de “Dive-o,” Okuma’s bringing it back with “The Wayback Weekend” old school family beach vacation, and par-tee on at Banyan Tree Golf Course with their biggest 2-day team competition of the year.
Brighten up your mood like the summer sun and head on over to the Risner Fitness Center to participate in the most colorful event of the month, the Armed Forces Color Fun Run. Dubbed as the Hawaii of Japan, it is fitting to have a luau here. So, grab your Hawaiian outfits and get lei’d at the Rocker E’Club’s Luau event!
For those who prefer the indoors, “’Spring’ into Crafts” with Arts & Crafts. They have several projects and classes for everyone! The O’Club is bringing Cinco de Mayo to Kadena so head on over for some delicious food, drinks, music, and dancing. Lastly, sign up for this month’s Kadena eSports May Mayhem if you’re a Rocket League enthusiast. Step up your game and join this 3 vs. 3 friendly tournament to show off your skills and win amazing prizes.
May holds several holidays; you can celebrate the long weekend with Memorial Day specials from Emery Lanes, Banyan Tree Golf Course, and the Kadena Marina. Honor and thank our beloved mothers this Mother’s Day with celebrations at the E’Club, ODR, Kadena Marina, O’Club, Okuma Beach, Arts & Crafts, Teen Center, and more!
Each of these facilities offer a variety of ways to celebrate such as a snorkeling trip, painting, dance, or buffet. However you celebrate this special day, we’ll make sure mom feels extra special!
On behalf of the 18 FSS Marketing team, we would like to greet and thank all the mothers for their sacrifice and hard work. Happy May Day, May the Fourth be with you, Happy Cinco de Mayo, remember our fallen heroes this Memorial Day, and Happy Mother’s Day. Wew, that’s a lot! ‘Til next time, readers!

#FindSomething Special
By Andrew Robinson
We may be in the midst of the rainy season, but a little drizzly weather doesn’t slow down Team Kadena! No matter which corner you turn, you’re guaranteed a charming experience. This is why, each month, we encourage our readers to venture around this lovely island to find something special.
The submissions never disappoint. We hope you have as much fun during these outings as we do looking at your pictures! Take a gander at some of our favorites this month. Perhaps you’ll feel inspired, or even add something new to your everexpanding Oki bucket list.
@whitakersway treated the kiddos to an ATV joyride through the jungle. This thrilling adventure, located in the Yambaru Forest near Nago, provides families with plenty of Instagram-worthy photoops. If you’re ever in the mood to check it out, take this small piece of advice: rainy weather makes this trip much more exciting! The rainwater creates big mud puddles, and it sure is fun to zip the ATV through them to create big, messy splashes.
If you’re looking for something less fast-paced, then take a page out of @the_einhorns’ book. She traveled to the Hotel Moon Beach in Onna Village. Here she is standing inside a beautiful hall with ivy plants draped from an open ceiling. This slick room offers a unique fusion of modernity and nature that we just can’t get enough of. There’s something refreshing about standing in a room full of plants, which certainly makes this destination a hot spot for spring photoshoots.
@capturingthekeatings certainly understood the assignment for this month and snapped an adorable picture of Children’s Day festivities in Uruma. The carp-shaped windsocks or “Koinobori” displayed around the island this time of year are just to die for! We love to see members of the community take the time to appreciate the small cultural aspects that make Japan such an interesting place to live. Also, what better way to honor children than by taking cute pictures that they’ll savor forever?
Till next time readers! Be sure to use our hashtag #FindSomethingSpecial when you post your jaunts around the island. We look forward to seeing where you go next!

Paddle your way to the finish line!
Dragon Boat Race: “
One boat, one beat.
Article by Janelle Rivera | Photos by Jamie Acton | Design by Yuka Kinjo
”
Come aboard as the largest Dragon Boat Race sets off in Naha, Okinawa! Bring your family and friends for several days of festivities and watch paddlers compete in this year’s rip-roaring race. Come witness as Okinawans exhibit their mastery as seafarers, cheer on your favorite team, and relish the festive atmosphere filled with music, food, traditional dancing, and laughter.
The Dragon Boat Race or “Haarii” emerged in China dating back two millenniums ago and was later adapted by Japan in the purpose of paying respect and gratitude to the “Gods of the Sea,” reeling in good luck in their future fishing voyage, and praying for their safety as they journey ahead among ocean tides.
Teams from all over Okinawa along with the military community gather and beautify their boats with carved dragon heads that represent their team. Dragons, known as the symbol of water, are noted to bolster with rain and ward off any bad luck and adversity.
The annual race is commonly held during the fifth day of May, which coincides with the array of holidays of Golden Week. As the event nears, dragon boats will start to fill the Tomari Port in Naha as teams prepare for a day of racing and celebration.
As you approach the dragon boat battle zone, a sea of colorful canoe-like crafts lavishly decorated will begin to fill your eyes. Teams of over 30 people will fill every corner as they prepare for an average of five minutes of fierce paddling toward the finish line.
After months of intense training together, all 32 of the amazing women of Sabina Soul Sisters learn the beat of their paddles with their unwavering and unbreakable solidarity. The bond they have formed is inimitable.
“Our bonding during training gives us the advantage of communicating to the best of our abilities so when competition time comes, it’s as if we are one,” said Daniela Gomez, a Sabani Soul Sisters team coach. “We become a family as we build mutual trust and respect within our team.”
As their paddles break the calm ocean and the waves splash against their bodies, they simultaneously paddle to the beat of the drum with only one goal in sight: to finish the race as a team, win or lose. The surge of adrenaline traveling through their bodies makes it more exciting.
“This type of training can be too much for others, but this strengthens us physically along with our bond. It’s also a way for us to embrace Japan’s beautiful culture and motivate us to even learn how to speak Japanese,” Gomez said.
The upcoming race is special because it is the first since the COVID-19 pandemic. “Being on the boat with these amazing girls after a long pause feels surreal. It’s such a special moment for us,” she added. Every member’s role is vital in maneuvering the boat in the right direction and pace. As soon as they step foot on the boat, they become, as they say, “one boat, one beat.”
line!
The Sabina Soul Sisters team has been racing for over seven years and has welcomed many women from both Okinawa and the military community surrounding the island. The team consists of paddlers, two pacers stationed in the front, a drummer, and a steerer to name a few.
Every sport and training present its own challenges. This water sport is no different, especially for a team of moms living overseas. “Balancing life as a mom, wife, and work pose its own challenges but managing your priorities and listening to your body is vital to staying present in everything we do.” Having a routine helps tremendously as well.
Tomokazu Aka, a team coach and steerer, has seen all the changes within the Sabani Soul Sisters throughout the years. Apart from training members the basic form and techniques, having good communication, trust, and an unbreakable bond is as crucial for him.
“Getting into physical training is one thing but learning how to communicate and train hard with one another is important,” he added. With the crowds cheering and loud background music blaring, it is important for a team to listen to one person, usually the drummer or steerer, to be able to harmoniously paddle.
This type of fun-filled, adrenaline pumping water sport activity may be a competition to some, but it is a tradition and celebration important to many Okinawans. This event is a reminiscent of their past, and enables them to take a moment to celebrate their culture, which is a trait we should all practice.
“
”
Haarii for me is not always about the competition ... (Haarii) is a time to reflect and embrace my culture as well as spread awareness ...
The Dragon Boat Race teaches us lessons we all should always be mindful of. It teaches us the importance of teamwork, trust, communication, flexibility, understanding, patience, and resilience. Akin to the mothers of Sabani Soul Sisters, balancing life and having time for yourself is a healthy practice.
This event exhibits the importance of remembering and showing respect to our roots; to always show gratitude toward what we have and work harder for what we want and don’t have.
“Haarii for me is not always about the competition; it’s not always about winning,” Aka-san stated. “What this event gives me is a time to reflect and embrace my culture as well as spread awareness to those who are not aware of the many traditional aspects of Okinawa.”
“I welcome our military community to be part of our team because I not only get to train them to be the best version of themselves, but I also get to teach them about my culture and why it is special.” Aka-san concluded.
Curious as to what this event looks like? Head over to this year’s Dragon Boat Race and support the Sabani Soul Sisters along with all the other teams participating. What better way to embrace the Japanese culture than this!

Children’s Day HAPPY こ ど も の 日
By Janelle Rivera
Children grow in a blink of an eye and everyday stressors can sometimes hinder us from taking the time to slow down and cherish every moment with them. Before we know it, they become toddlers, adolescents, or mature adults. That is why I very much appreciate this specific Japanese holiday called Children’s Day or “こども の日 (Kodomo-no-hi)” as it allows us to pause and reflect on our child(ren)’s growth and health even just for a day.
Children’s Day is among the several festivities celebrated during one of the largest holidays in Japan known as Golden Week. Golden Week is a popular holiday consisting of a series of holidays between April 29 to May 5 with Children’s Day celebrated on the last day. As a matter of fact, Children’s Day was formerly celebrated for the boys in the family but developed into the current holiday in the 1940s; to wish good health, growth, happiness, and future success for all children.
As the holiday approaches, you will notice colorful carpshaped windsocks or “Koinobori” swim through the skies as they fill the whole island. Why carp you may ask? Carps are the symbol of this holiday as they represent strength, persistence, perseverance, power, and are known to be the most spirited fish. Carps are known to adapt to any sea conditions and continue to swim along wherever they may reside. Per a Chinese legend, carps also allegedly evolve into dragons as they endure a challenging journey toward a waterfall called the Dragon Gate.
Much like the other holidays we’ve discussed so far, Children’s Day is observed throughout Japan with some cultures celebrating in different ways. One of which is hanging koinobori flags outside people’s households, parks, rivers, and more. Considering it to be known as a celebration of the boys in the family, some display “Kabuto,” a traditional samurai
helmet, or “Gogatsu-ningyo,” Japanese armored warrior dolls, symbolizing a healthy and happy life ahead for boys.
Let’s not forget about food! Children’s Day is no exception when it comes to traditional food that goes with every holiday. Food prepared for this special day represents the parents’ love for their children. Dishes prepared include “Kashiwa-mochi” and “Chimaki.” Kashiwa-mochi is a sweet Japanese delicacy featuring traditional rice cake with red bean paste filling wrapped in oak leaf while Chimaki is a steamed mochi rice wrapped in bamboo leaf in a triangular shape. Kashiwa-mochi is said to bring good luck and success in children’s future while Chimaki is known to defend those who consume it from evil spirits.
On May 5, let us honor all the children by making them feel extra special and loved as you reflect on the life you have built for them. Don’t forget to raise your koinobori, visit Hija River to get a glimpse of the myriad of colorful koinobori, try the special dishes, and raise your glass to all our children!
Let us take this holiday to slow down, savor those special moments, and take a day to be thankful for our children. Happy Children’s Day from your Kadena FSS Family!
