The holiday season is officially upon us! This time of year is my absolute favorite seeing family and friends while indulging in delicious holiday meals. Living overseas away from loved ones can be tough, but your Kadena FSS family is here to bridge the distance and make new memories with you. First thing’s first, caddy up with Enlisted and Officers’ Clubs’ 9th Annual Kadena Clubs Golf Tournament. Then head to Arts & Crafts the following week for the biggest Craftchella yet where you can unleash yourself in all forms of creativity. November in Okinawa still allows for wandering outdoors and what a delightful way to spend a night or 2 at your favorite beachfront resort; save big with Okuma Beach’s Winter in the Sun special! Speaking of the beach, Aquatics and Kadena Marina are partnering up to deliver the best Kadena Marina SUP CUP or better known as paddleboard race! If you prefer staying dry, Outdoor Recreation has kicked off hiking and cycling season with endless trips for you to embark on. Before getting into the holiday spirit, Risner Fitness Center is hosting their very own Kadena Cup Soccer Tournament 11 v 11 this month so gather your team and compete in a round-robin elimination game. Moving on to Thanksgiving gatherings and Black Friday deals! Check out our feature for a list of activities you can do for Friendsgiving. Some events include Marshall Dining Facility’s Thanksgiving Meal, Enlisted and Officers’ Clubs’ buffets and dinners, Schilling’s Baller Bingo, and Black Friday sales at Arts & Crafts and Risner Fitness Center! Don’t forget, Veterans Day is this month. Allow your FSS family to give thanks to you by offering sales and specials to include Emery Lanes, Kadena Marina, and lots more. With immense respect and appreciation, we salute our brave men and women, both past and present, who work and have worked tirelessly in defense of our freedom. On behalf of your Kadena FSS team, THANK YOU! Let us provide the delightful cuisine and enjoyment this season. Happy Thanksgiving!

Your FSS family is here to fill those voids and create new, lasting, and special memories.

Let’’s begin with food. Food is a cornerstone in every culture and holiday traditions around the world. Regardless of your origin, a meal unifies individuals, sparks conversations, introduces new flavors, and takes you to new adventures with unique twists that tantalize your taste buds. Kadena has an incredible and diverse team to offer you just that this holiday season. From traditional Thanksgiving meals to adding new cuisines to the menu, get ready for a delightful and exciting burst of new and familiar flavors. The ever-trusted Enlisted and Officers’ Clubs along with Marshall Dining Facility, Okuma Beach, and Teen Center have prepared several meals for everyone to gobble on. There will be buffets, dinners togo, and drive-by dinners – an endless array of options to choose from! Living overseas, however, also offers new opportunities to encounter along with new culture and traditions to embrace. Even though Okinawa may not actively partake in Thanksgiving festivities, one can still explore the island by engaging in unique activities that present a distinct way to mark the occasion, which veer from the norm. As your reliable and trusted companion, FSS is here to provide you with unforgettable and memorable experiences. Here, you’ll find a list of land and water activities you can enjoy with friends that have become your second family away from home.
Land Activities Autumn in Okinawa is the ideal season to go outdoors and explore. Bring your Friendsgiving festivities with Information, Tickets & Travel’s discounted tickets to the Southeast Botanical Gardens Illuminations and Murasaki Mura Lantern Festival. Afterward, make your way to Outdoor Recreation to hike and witness the majestic and stunning views of the island.
“Our team provides
our service members, civilians, and family members a taste of home, while also integrating local
culture experience to provide Quality of Life especially this T hanksgiving”
Kevin Sorenson, 18 FSS director
Okuma Beach is adding a 5K run, Turkey Trot, to your pre-feast celebrations. If you’d rather stay near the area, Arts & Crafts’ Craftchella offers the perfect space for you to unleash your creativity while Schilling hosts their Baller Bingo: Black Friday. For sports enthusiasts, Kadena Fitness is hosting their soccer tournament, and both the Enlisted and Officers’ Clubs are in full swing with their annual golf tournament. Water Activities You’ll be surprised to know that taking a dip in the water during this season is still an option. The FSS ultimate goal this holiday season is for friends to enjoy the festivities with their family away from home. “No matter where we are in the world or who we are with supporting the mission, Thanksgiving is a time to reflect, express our gratitude, experience joy in our surroundings, and embrace those who enrich our lives,” said Col. Laura Ramos, 18th Mission Support Group commander. So, gather your friends, coworkers, and loved ones this holiday season as you come together with Kadena FSS; where bonds are formed that turn friends into family. Let’s speak English!
If you’re not fond of the summer heat, November in Okinawa is an excellent and ideal time for you to explore the outdoors and the serene beaches. However, Okinawa is more than just its astonishing scenic views.
are several locations that hold public events for people to become engrossed and witness the history of the island. Witness Eisa performances, folk dances, and journey back in time as you gaze upon artworks after artworks and encounter individuals dressed in traditional attires.
The island holds a rich history that continues to be celebrated and acknowledged by locals and tourists alike for its pivotal role in molding the present. This month, allow yourself to fully immerse in Okinawa’s rich culture absorbing every aspect like a sponge, especially this Culture Day or “Bunka no Hi.” As the name suggests, Culture Day is a moment for the Japanese community to celebrate their cultural heritage, artistic contributions, and their significance to the nation. This is one of the days that merits special acknowledgement as it marks the establishment of the country’s post-war constitution in 1946, soon after Japan’s surrender to the United States. This annual national holiday we know today is remembered on Nov. 3 with several parades, festivals, art exhibitions, ceremonies, and many more. It embodies an innovative transformation from pre-
vious errors and a shift toward a representation of uplifting attributes such as hope, serenity, and happiness. Additionally, Culture Day also holds the Order of Culture Award Ceremony where individuals who have left a profound impact on the nation are recognized. Considering the importance Okinawa places on its heritage, you can observe numerous celebrations locals organize during this holiday. With the bounteous celebrations the country holds, Culture Day is verily a day dedicated to arts. Shuri Castle, Okinawa Prefectural Museum & Art Museum, and Kokusai Street
If you find yourself traveling to mainland Japan during this time, Hakone, a renowned town, is popular for the Feudal Lord’s Procession where you can witness real-life portrayals of Japan’s lifestyle during the Edo period, an era represented by a widespread appreciation for arts and culture. Whether you spend this national holiday visiting museums, traveling to mainland Japan, appreciating the arts, or watching parades, it’s imperative to remember the significance of this day: Japan’s history and the journey it has taken to reach its present state.
