The Beginning of a Legacy Aero Clubs around the Air Force officially began in 1948 when General Curtis LeMay saw some of his airmen rebuilding a small aircraft in one of the Offutt Air Force Base Hangars. His direction to them was, “If we are going to do this, we are going to do it right!” Many of our people wanted to be involved in aviation and many want to learn to fly. U.S. Air Force Aero Clubs offer patrons the opportunity to learn to fly, continue in their aviation education, and maintain critical flying skills. RECREATION

By the time I get to work, they have already been hard at work and I see all the rental equipment laid out and inspected. They do some great work together. Written By • Melissa Kowaluk Photo by • Att Eachus

T

he Outdoor Recreation Park Crew is the backbone of many fun activities customers take part in on Kadena. If you’ve ever rented equipment from Outdoor Recreation, the Park Crew has ensured your rental equipment is clean and in great working condition. This applies to bouncy houses, tables, chairs, bikes, kayaks - you name it, ODR has it. They also work on cleaning up the different parks around Kadena and the Marina, to include Marek Park, Kenney Park, and more. They work in the early morning hours, before the Okinawan heat gets too extreme. They set up the equipment, wash it down, and make any repairs necessary. The Park Crew enjoys working early in the morning, because their day ends early, leaving time to spend with their families and enjoying their hobbies. They love what they do because they love working outside as a team. It came as no surprise to learn the entire team is very outdoorsy and loves to go surfing and take part in other outdoor activities. They sometimes even go surfing on their lunch break - now that’s a great way to use your time! They are a crew of 8 members, who have worked at ODR from 22 and 24 years, to 4 months. Having crew members who have worked at the facility for so long means they have the expertise to train new members to be in tip-top shape. The newest member, who has only been there for

20 FOR ADDITIONAL PROGRAMMING PLEASE VISIT KADENAFSS.COM

four months, has taken the senior members’ direction and quickly melded in with the rest of the seasoned crew. Paul Calain, manager at ODR, says he never ceases to be amazed by their hard work. “By the time I get to work, they have already been hard at work and I see all the rental equipment laid out and inspected. They do some great work together.” If you’ve ever attended one of the great concerts FSS puts on, the Park Crew has worked tirelessly to set up all the canopies and tables for customers and vendors to use and enjoy. “We are not backstage, but we’re the backbone!” Said Naoki-san. This is true! The event wouldn’t be possible without their hard work. The Park Crew enjoys collaborating with other FSS facilities and meeting new team members from around the squadron. They work in conjunction with the Schilling Community Center to work out logistics and plans in case of changing weather conditions, which we know is frequent on Okinawa. If the weather turns sour on the day of the event, the Park Crew has to spring into action and make sure the canopies and tables are secured or taken down to avoid safety issues for the hundreds of customers at the events. Next time you attend an event, or rent the fun equipment at ODR, remember the awesome folks who help keep everything ready to go for the events and outings everyone gets to enjoy!

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF... 33rd Rescue Squadron

Written By • Melissa Kowaluk | Photos by • Att Eachus

The 33rd Rescue Squadron, otherwise known as the Jolly Green Giants, operates the HH-60 Pave Hawk and is the main rescue operation for the 18th Wing. 1st Lt Matthew Malek explained a bit of the history behind the name. Their mascot namesake is derived from the fields of Vietnam during the war. At the time they used the H3, named the Jolly Green Giant because the formation in which the aircraft would land would make it look like a giant had taken two big steps forward. Many were lost during that war, and they named the squadron to pay homage to those lost. The versatile, dependable helicopters can operate in various conditions day or night, making their operators just as skilled. The crew members we spoke to each operate a different component of the flight, from pilot and co-pilot, to intelligence, weapons, and strategy. We met Captain Michael Jansen, HH-60 Instructor Pilot, Chief of Weapons and Tactics. He explained the differences between the two sides of his job, depending on flying and non-flying days. On days they are flying, the entire day is spent preparing for the flight. They choose one specific skill they want to focus on, whether it’s threat mitigation, 28 FOR ADDITIONAL PROGRAMMING PLEASE VISIT KADENAFSS.COM

training to rescue survivors, water rescue, radio communications, or more. They spend the entire day preparing to fly - mission planning, briefing, flying, then debriefing. With the ever-changing nature of their position, practices are geared to operate under quick thinking; therefore, they do not always plan exactly what they will be working on ahead of time - it all depends on what skill is most needed at the time. On non-flying days, he instructs the rest of his crew on specific aircraft details and ensures their understanding of mission goals. When asked what his favorite part about the job is, he explained, of course, the flying is best. “In a time where traditional aircraft can function with little human interaction and everything is a lot more automated, it’s interesting to fly something that requires so much coordination, using both hands and both feet as well to operate the aircraft,” he said. His favorite memory here on Okinawa so far, was his first flight. “After being away for a while, getting to fly again and getting to see the island on a beautiful clear day was great.” We also got the chance to speak to 1st Lt Matthew Malek, HH-60 Co-Pilot and Weapons and Tactics officer, 1st Lt Minfei Yu, Chief of Intelligence, and SSgt Justin Wyatt, Weapons and Tactics NCO and Instructor Special Mission Aviator. SSgt Wyatt explained his responsabilities are more on the ground doing the pre-flight on the aircraft, and preparing the defense systems for the crew. He explained what a rewarding experience it is to save someone from danger. He and 1st Lt. Malek have recently returned from being deployed in Afghanistan and both said they are happy to be in positions to help others, either by instructing, or preparing the aircraft to fly.

I am glad to be in a position where I can help things work better for everyone 1st Lt. Matthew Malek

As the Chief of Intelligence, it’s 1st Lt Yu’s responsibility to research and understand the operating environment of a given mission, because they could be tasked to take on a mission anywhere in the world. He creates an accurate picture of the operating environment for the air crew and provides information that helps them understand what they’re up against – terrain, geography, political climates, and more. As the co-pilot, 1st Lt Malek would then take that information and help navigate the pilot on the terrain. When we asked 1st Lt Yu what he would like others to know about his job, he aptly said “well, nothing, or as little possible.” Well-put by someone whose job is to gather intelligence! All squadrons on base make significant contributions to the overall mission of the 18th Wing, and the 33rd Rescue Squadron is no different. Along with the projection of military power in the Pacific region, its main mission is to

mitigate risk by being available and ready for unplanned circumstances. Whether they’re supporting training missions here, or supporting active forward deployed forces, the Jolly Green Giants are ready to spring into action. To be able to do so, their crews must be at the top of their game in ensuring their aircraft are ready to save people if the call comes. There are many different kinds of aircraft flying daily, and the HH-60 Pave Hawk is the most versatile of them to deploy in case of emergencies. One of the biggest impacts the 33rd Rescue Squadron has on the general public here on Okinawa is by being the primary squadron to conduct Civilian Search and Rescue. This doesn’t only apply to active duty scenarios, it applies to all civilians on the island. They cooperate with the Japanese authorities as well to rescue someone in distress if necessary. Each member of the crew we spoke to was asked individually if they would like to give any shout-outs, and they all ended up saying similiar names! They would like to give a shout-out to TSgt Miller, “greatest NCOIC ever,” SSgt Select Kenneth Means, and Airman Hoskinson.

TER YOUTH CEN e have so much to be thankful for. Our homes, our family, our friends, , l for the staff fu k n a th our health, and so much more. Sometimes it’s easy to lose sight so I am sweet! of the big picture, especially when small inconveniences seem like they are all so momentous roadblocks. It happens to all of us and it’s ok, so long as h -Sarah Bet we refocus and continue looking ahead. This is the time of year to really think about those you are thankful for and what that means for you and those around you. Taking some time each year to think about the great things that have happened this year as well as acknowledge difficulties we’ve overcome is a great way to grow and look ahead to new experiences.

W

Expressing gratitude goes a long way and can improve many aspects of life. Giving thanks feels good, which in turn improves our mood and our interpersonal connections. It even helps us physically by lowering blood pressure, decreasing stress, and helping us get better sleep. With those perks, why wouldn’t we be grateful, am I right? Thanksgiving is a great reminder, but it shouldn’t be the only time we express feelings of gratiude toward others. It doesn’t have to be a big showy expression - a simple ‘thank you’ to someone who helped you at a store, or a neighbor who helped you with your car goes a long way. The key is to be genuine. Anything is better with a smile because it brightens everyone’s mood! The person smiling is happy and the person seeing the smile is even happier - you get the picture.

This year, we have thanked our customers by launching Smile Days and the FS Giveaways and bringing back Domo Days! During these campaigns, we gave away great trips, freebies, items, classes, and more! This month, our customers had the chance to show their appreciation! We set up boxes around our FSS facilities with little slips where customers could write about their experiences at our facilities. We’ve gathered a few here! Once the food comas of Thanksgiving are over, keep these little thoughts in mind, you’ll make someone’s day! Smile, be genuine and grateful for all the great things both small and big!
