The Significance of the Teen Center to Me Written by • Jordan J. Kadena High School, Senior Growing up a military child, you often wonder if your peers, the “normal” ones, will ever understand your lifestyle. I always dreaded needing to explain my life story when asked one simple question: where are you from? Throughout my life, I longed for a safe haven, and it was frustrating that no one understood me. Luckily, I found the Kadena Teen Center. The Teen Center is more than just a building where I go after school. The students who attend come from diverse backgrounds, yet share stories that are relatable to my life. That is where the bonding begins. Like me, the students who attend the Teen Center are complicated and enthralling in some of the most interesting ways possible. We can participate in different clubs or just hang out and chill. By going here for the last three years, the Teen Center has helped me understand that there really is no normal. I joined clubs like SMARTGirls and Keystone which allowed me to volunteer for my community and gain leadership skills. The Kadena Teen Center will always be extremely significant to me because I was able to build connections that will stick with me for a lifetime.

A DAY IN THE LIFE...

36 FOR ADDITIONAL PROGRAMMING PLEASE VISIT KADENAFSS.COM

18th Operations Support Squadron The 18th Operations Support Squadron (18 OSS) wears a lot of hats. They work to support training, understand war plans, track the weather, maintain the airfield, monitor air space, provide intelligence, outfit air crew with flight equipment, and so much more. After talking with some of the squadron’s members, I started to see how so many moving pieces are part of one larger goal, supporting the flying mission. I interviewed 1st Lt Earl Gratton, the Director of Operations of the Airfield Operations Flight, who said that while they each have their own lanes and responsibilities, they are connected through their efforts to support the flying mission. 1st Lt Gratton runs one of the largest flights in the 18 OSS. Every day, he checks in on his sections that include: Air Traffic Control, Airfield Management, Radar Airfield Weather Systems (RAWS), and also commented on the support mission of Operating Location Alpha (OLA). Air Traffic Control is a responsibility that most have seen in action from a distance, their impressive control tower dominates the skyline of the flight line. They direct the flow of aircraft into and out of the airfield space and ensure the safety of all involved. Airfield Management is in charge of making sure the airfield is good to go. They ensure people are following regulations in regard to their driving and work closely with Civil Engineers to confirm construction projects are going as scheduled. They police the airfield and make sure there are no cracks in the runway or pavement. The RAWS team is in charge of maintaining the navigation equipment, towers, and radios. The equipment they maintain is essential to ensure the flying mission takes place. The OLA team is 12 civilians in Naha who work directly with Japanese air traffic controllers. They control aircraft on a broader scale than the Kadena operation. 1st Lt Gratton does a great deal of administrative work, but his favorite part of the job is interacting with people. The sections he oversees are filled with diligent and intelligent workers and he enjoys seeing the operational impact his team has on Kadena. Their mission ensures that the runway is good to go, aircraft are able to taxi freely, construction is completed, traffic is deconflicted, and navigation aids are up and running. That is a great deal of responsibility that lands in just one flight in the 18 OSS. Another member of 18 OSS is 2nd Lt Caleb Johnson, a weather officer. One

can imagine the gamut of responsibilities this position has in a place like Okinawa, with all of its interesting weather patterns. Moving here has turned me a bit weather obsessed, and it was amazing to meet someone behind the meteorological efforts that take place on Kadena. 2nd Lt Johnson creates the wing standup slides that overview the weather. This allows the base to decide how operations are going to go. Especially on Kadena, weather drives the mission. 2nd Lt Johnson emphasized the importance of his role saying, “If the weather is bad, we can’t get planes up. They need and utilize our products every day.” His favorite part of the job is the meteorology side, he went to school for it and is a self-proclaimed ‘weather nerd’ so seeing his work being used means a lot to him. Whenever there is a typhoon, 2nd Lt Johnson and his team have to go to 24-hour operations. He emphasized how much he enjoys working with them and how exciting it is to see how their work and suggestions are taken into consideration. It shows how much impact the weather team has. He also wanted to make sure people know they can be wrong; while they strive for accuracy, their work isn’t the final word. They are here to help ensure protection, safety of flight, and safety of life. Outside of his work as a weather officer, 2nd Lt Johnson also spends time volunteering. He recently spoke to a group of prospective college students to share his story and encourage them to seek their goals. He lives his life by the Air Force slogan “Aim High, FlyFight-Win,” and said it inspires him every day to shoot for the top.

the way the different parts of OSS work together saying, “We all depend on each other to make the mission happen. When an office is behind it affects the other offices. For an air crew member to fly they need air crew equipment training, and if they don’t do the training or the paperwork isn’t filed then the member can’t fly. We’re full of different agencies and different offices but we all need each other.” They maintain folders of everything a service member has done since they joined the military. The folder includes things like what school they went to, prior bases, how many hours logged on each aircraft, and how many sorties they have flown. They also maintain the history of a person’s flights. Her favorite part of her job is working with the airmen, especially the up and coming ones. The Air Force changes so much, and she strives to be someone relatable. As an active duty member in a dual-military family, she works hard to find a balance between military member, mother, and wife. She hopes that others in her situation can see her get the job done and know they can do it too.

Capt Tahichi Richardson, the Chief of Plans for the plans & exercises flight, is in charge of staying up to date on operational war plans, updating them, and educating the group about them. He also works with the exercise component of his shop to certify training exercises are in line with those plans. He mentioned how important it is to train how you plan to fight. His weekly duties often include mission planning, flying, and simulator training with 961st Airborne Air Control Squadron. His favorite part of the job is SSgt Iyonna Boykin is the Noncommissioned staying informed.
