ARTS & CRAFTS
966-7347 Building 435
How to make the most of Your Home Away From Home Last month, Arts & Crafts on Kadena hosted a Home Décor contest on social media. The idea was to show how military families have taken their base housing and turned it into a home. We have all been there — walking into a new duty station home and seeing the white walls and wondering how you will create the warm space your family desires to feel at home. Arts & Crafts sells beautiful home décor, and this contest shows all the creative ways military members on Kadena have channeled their inner Joanna Gains! Contest winner, Ia Sempell, told us a little about her style and how she approaches turning her base housing into a home. Her first step is choosing a color or theme. Her current home focuses on light neutrals to allow for a brighter feel, and greenery accents to give it a boho vibe. Her furniture is wicker with hand-carved wooden accents to provide a Bali look and warm up the sitting space. Sempell also mentioned that she starts with the living room first. “That’s where our guests are a majority of the time, and I love making everyone that comes into my home feel welcomed and cozy,” said Sempell.
Sempell’s main piece of advice for others looking to cozy-up their space is not to allow the idea that it is not worth it to decorate your home simply because you are moving in 3 4 years. She added, “You are allowed to feel warm and loved in your home no matter how long you are there.”

What Is SkillBridge? The Air Force SkillBridge initiative promotes the civilian job training authority available for transitioning Air Force Service members. Air Force members meeting certain qualifications can participate in civilian job and employment training, including apprenticeships and internships. Such training can take place starting up to six months prior to an Airman’s separation or retirement. Additionally, the training must offer a high probability of employment and be provided to Airmen at little or no cost. Through SkillBridge, tremendous potential exists for Airmen, companies, trade unions, and others for leveraging this new DoD authority.

ith our facilities opening back up, we are excited to feature The Rocker Enlisted Club for this month’s FSS Spotlight. Spotlight is a monthly series that we are excited to bring back to you! Each month, we will choose a different facility here on Kadena to share with you their activities and services you will want to take advantage of and to highlight some staff members. The Rocker Enlisted Club is still a new addition to Kadena Air Base. It is a brand new, $51 million building that opened its doors in May 2018. It features two restaurants, Kazoku Place and Hanabi’s, and a café, The Daily Grind. It serves as a center for significant events with a ballroom that can accommodate 800 people, slot machines, and the Rocker Lounge, which is a weekend hot spot for young airmen. While the facility’s building and architecture are impressive, the lineup of activities they offer is even more so. Did you know that Hanabi’s has programming every single night of the week? Mr. Rob Lewis, Entertainment Coordinator for the
FOR OPEN POSITIONS, PLEASE VISIT USAJOBS.GOV
clubs, wants you to know there is an event for everyone — from Country Music Night on the first Saturday of every month to Smart Phone Trivia on Thursdays, and plenty of other fun everyday of the week! Hanabi’s also features a new-age version of Name that Tune called “Roczam that Tune” on Sunday evenings. Get together a team of two to eight participants to listen to songs through the decades and play a fun game, bingo-style! A favorite aspect of Hanabi’s is the beverage list. Craft beers on tap, local beers on tap, and delicious cocktails prepared by creative bartenders. The pub food is a fan favorite, too. Traditional American fare is featured, and it is also a great lunch spot during the week. The Rocker Enlisted Club is open to all ranks! Officers are requested to leave at 9 pm from the nightlife areas, but everyone can come and enjoy the activities and social scene until then.

ne of the perks of having such a vast facility are the different events it can accommodate. Units and organizations can host large events like squadron holiday parties, annual balls for the various military branches, or lunch meetings with your staff. The complex offers catering menus to create a spread specialized for your gathering. For a quick stop, have you been to the Daily Grind? If not, you are in a for a treat. They proudly serve Starbucks® coffee. They also have a separate entrance, so you can pop right in to get your favorite latte or coffee treat but be sure to take a look at the dessert display case. Amongst the traditional (but delicious!) breakfast pastries, they serve The Cheesecake Factory® cheesecakes. With rotating seasonal flavors and options to purchase by the slice, it is the perfect after-dinner stop for a sweet treat or a party centerpiece. Koji Kamekawa, the supervisor of Daily Grind, is a familiar face to the regular customers but always has a pleasant smile for everyone who comes through the door. He has been at the Daily Grind for seven years and said his favorite part of the job is talking to the customers. “I remember many customers and love saying hello, but new customers are fun too!” After so many years of being in the coffee business, he shared that he
46 FOR ADDITIONAL PROGRAMMING PLEASE VISIT KADENAFSS.COM
loves simple coffee drinks. His favorite is a cup of plain black coffee. However, Kamekawa was excited to share that they now have boba drinks on the menu. It has been highly requested, and is a favorite, so swing by next time and grab a sweet treat to go! We can’t forget about Skoshi Rocker. It is a separate building located between Emery Lanes and Chili’s and offers a big part of the Enlisted Club programming. Johnny Pyrdol, Bingo Supervisor, said, “Skoshi is separated to bingo, gaming, and food. It is fun, but a different vibe,” referencing the lighter foot traffic and the regular crowds for the bingo gaming. Skoshi offers bingo at some point in the day, seven days a week! A favorite is Soap Opera Bingo, presented during lunch three times a week. If you are busy during the day, nightly bingo is offered six nights a week. The bingo room features electronic Bingo cards. “If you are new to bingo, we recommend you start electronic bingo,” said Pyrdol. Skoshi has staff that will gladly walk you through the steps to play for the first time. Whether you are a seasoned participant or a newbie, there is money to win at Skoshi Bingo, so stop in at any of their convenient times during the week to play.
With the holidays this month, The Rocker Enlisted complex wants to share all the options available for Thanksgiving meals. While the pandemic has put a damper on travel plans, it does not need to affect the holiday spirit! The Clubs have something for everyone this Thanksgiving. If skipping the preparation and dishes is on your agenda, The Rocker hosts a Thanksgiving Day Buffet, complete with a carving station and buffet line of all your holiday favorites. Be sure to check out the menu on page 51. If something low-key or simple is your preference, they also offer Thanksgiving Driveby Dinners. A single serving dinner to-go features all your traditional favorite dishes. The Drive-By Dinners runs on Thanksgiving Day from 4 to 6 pm. The Rocker is also offering an in-between option! If having the family gather at the table for all the traditional fixins’ is just what this holiday needs, The Rocker can do all the hard work for you. Thanksgiving Dinners to-go is just what you need. Pre-order your meal before Tuesday, 24 November, at noon with large or small meal package options to feed your family. Pick up will be available on Wednesday, 25 November, or on Thanksgiving Day. The Rocker promises to leave no detail out. Be sure to check out page 51 for the pricing and options for dinner orders.
ROCKER ENLISTED CLUB
If you are new to our little paradise, please put The Rocker Enlisted Club Complex on your list of must-see facilities. It is a fantastic resource with a little bit of fun for everyone in the family, a dinner date, or a morning coffee break. The staff and programming are always ready to greet you with smiles, good attitudes, and tons of activities. We promise you will find some fun when you come in!
