Hiking OKINAWA Article by Carolyn Osorio | Design by Takako Uehara

A

s a Southern California native, the word hiking has always elicited images of rocks, dust, and desert. Arriving in Okinawa last year left me with no shortage of recommendations for hikes, waterfalls, and groups of adventurers eager to share their favorite spots. However, a simple sweaty walk down the street left me wondering why anyone would brave the humidity (and bugs) to hike on an island whose highest peak reaches only 1,650 feet above sea level? When Kadena Outdoor Recreation (affectionately dubbed ODR) offered me the opportunity to join their seasoned tour guide, Naoki Uchida, for a river trekking trip to Fukugawa Falls, I saw the opportunity to finally find out! November in Okinawa marks the changing of the seasons. As the weather cools down (kind of) and the ocean temperature drops, many Okinawans bid farewell to water activities in favor of cycling and, November’s cover star, hiking. Coincidentally, back home in the States, National Take A Hike Day falls on 17 November, making this the perfect time to explore what hiking looks like here in Okinawa.

Naoki-san, who is Outdoor Recreation’s longtime guide, has been offering tours with ODR for 13 years and has truly seen it all. Every year on 1 November, he begins the hiking season by hiking Mt. Katsuu. Naoki-san explained, “Each mountain has its own god,” and by visiting on the first day of the season, he offers the mountain a bottle of sake and prays for a good hiking season. He then returns to Mt. Katsuu every year on the last day of April to thank the mountain for the hiking season (and pour out another bottle of sake in gratitude)! This ritual serves as his opening and closing experience, bookmarking the hiking season here in Okinawa. If you are wondering why Naoki-san chose Mt. Katsuu for his annual ritual, he told us, “It reminds me of my home.”

“Each mountain has its own god.”

OKINAWA HIKING FACTS Okinawa Island’s highest point is Mount Yonaha at 1,650 feet, but the biggest mountain in Okinawa Prefecture is located on Ishigaki Island! Mount Omoto, on Ishigaki’s northern coast, measures 1,726 feet tall.

When asked about his favorite hike, Naoki-san didn’t hesitate to name Kagoshima in mainland Japan! Coincidentally, Kagoshima is also his hometown and the location of ODR’s off-island trip next month (You can join ODR, and Naoki-san, for their fall trek through Kagoshima National Park on 3 - 6 December). When pressed for a favorite hike a little closer to our current home, Naoki-san chose Mt. Sankaku, a short but steep hike near Nago. Sankaku, which means “triangle” in Japanese, is named for the view hikers have of the mountain’s shape from the starting point. When I asked Naokisan why this hike stands out for him above the rest in Okinawa, he told me how much he liked the rock-climbing elements of the hike. While also a straight-to-the-top, no-frills-style hike, the ability to climb and use your hands makes it more exciting and intensive than other peak-focused options in the area. For our guided river trek, Naoki-san took us to the Fukugawa Falls region where we were able to experience two gorgeous waterfalls. After about an hour drive north toward Nago, our first stop was, naturally, Family Mart for provisions. From there, a quick 10-minute drive up into the hills made us feel miles away from civilization. Fukugawa Falls is a popular destination in Okinawa and it is easy to see why. The shady river trek area provides protection from the harsh sun while the cool running water fights the heaviness of Okinawa’s humidity. We were lucky enough to enjoy a nice breeze on the day of our trek, making for truly great hiking conditions despite it still being the late summer. Different trails, through both the river itself and along carved out stairs and pathways nearby, allow for a multitude of different areas to discover and explore. A lovely couple was even enjoying lunch at the pavilion near the beginning of the hike.

VENTURE | KADENAFSS.COM 31

Once we reached the first waterfall of the trek, our group didn’t hesitate to jump right in! Both of the waterfalls we hiked to had decently sized pools for swimming, and neither was overly deep at the time that we visited. However, during the rainy season in the late spring, water levels can dramatically rise in this area and lead to more dangerous conditions, so always check the weather and keep rainfall in mind when hiking near water in Okinawa. The trail up the hill over the first waterfall was narrow and steep, so along with felt-bottomed booties, long sleeves are recommended. Conversely, the way back down can be slippery and challenging, so a set of gloves would also be a good addition to your pack. If you don’t already have hiking equipment and/or aren’t sure you want to invest in owning specific gear, ODR has a variety of equipment for rent!

“I love showing

this beautiful island to Americans.”

Along the way, I asked Naoki-san about his connection to Okinawa. Despite being from mainland Japan, he explained that his mother and grandparents are Okinawan, so he spent summers on the island as a boy. After attending university here in Okinawa (for Economics, no less), he started working with ODR and decided to never leave. “I love showing this beautiful island to Americans. I really love it.” As a guide and programmer for ODR, he not only personally takes groups on hikes, cycling excursions, and camping trips, but also designs and plans every outing from the location to the season to the accommodations. When I asked him what the benefit of taking a trip or a hike through ODR was versus, say, going it alone, he told me, “Safety.” Having a professional with knowledge of both the area and potential dangers gives hikers an important safety net when hiking in a new place.

THINGS TO BRING • Water (always bring more than you think you’ll need!) • Felt bottom booties for wet/river treks • Good traction shoes for land hikes • Gloves for trails and rock climbing • Hat/Sunshade • Snacks • Waterproof sunscreen • Bug spray

HIKING RULES TO FOLLOW • Never hike alone. Ideally, hike in threes in case of accidents or injury. • If you get lost on a trail, go back in the direction you came; do not keep going. • Leave no trace. Pack out what you bring in. • Stay on the path, do not try to make a new one. • If you see a sign saying a trail or area is closed, please respect it.

After our second waterfall swim, we packed up and headed back out. Full disclosure, one member of our group had a roach crawl in his shirt, I saw some of the largest spiders I’ve ever seen on the island, and several lizards were spotted, well, everywhere. If you’re squeamish about nature, be forewarned! Additionally, we all agreed that we didn’t realize the trail coming in was as steep of a downhill incline until we had to hike back up it. However, that final burn at the end of the hike made the air conditioning in the ODR van that much sweeter. While this desert-loving Southern California girl is still not exactly sold on braving the humidity here in Okinawa, having the opportunity to explore beautiful rivers and waterfalls with someone as knowledgeable as Naoki-san made me appreciate the different kinds of hiking options available here. For many of us, our time here on island may be our only opportunity to explore the kind of unique

hiking that Okinawa’s sub-tropical climate allows for. While all of the hikes included in this article are open to the public and can be explored at your own pace (restrictions willing), having Naoki-san’s unique insights into the history, culture, and even language aspects of our hike made for a much richer experience than my usual dusty California rock views. If you’d like to explore hiking with ODR, join them to celebrate National Take a Hike Day on 17 November and enjoy a free guided hike up Mt. Ishikawa. To learn more about these hikes, and other guided hiking opportunities with Naoki-san, contact ODR today!
