At the end of the day, our goal is to help people reach their educational goals Written By • Melissa Kowaluk Photo by • Jana byrn
One of the best opportunities offered to military members and their families is access to limitless educational resources. The great staff at the Education Center are here to help anyone reach their educational goals. The steps to achieve those goals may vary depending on different situations, but with their help, the sky’s the limit! The Education Center has two main functions, voluntary education and military/formal training and they service anyone from new Airmen, to retirees. The voluntary education side of the house is for those who want to pursue a particular degree, whether it be the CCAF, or Associate, Bachelor’s, or Master’s degree. Navigating educational options and possibilities can be confusing, but the experts here act as a liaison between the customer and accredited universities and are ready to help find the right program. They not only help active duty members using their Tuition Assistance, but they also help dependents and members from other services on island. On a training side of the house, their team works diligently to ensure members are scheduled for and attend 20 FOR ADDITIONAL PROGRAMMING PLEASE VISIT KADENAFSS.COM
professional military training. Active duty members who have gone through the promotion process have certainly been assisted by the hardworking folks at the Education Center. They not only ensure testing of those eligible, but they also help military members who are separating or retiring through the Higher Education Track as part of the Transition Assistance Program. Even when things don’t go as planned, like during system outages, their team happily rallies together and work to ensure their clients are taken care of. This year alone, the Kadena Education Center has helped more than 1,700 Airmen utilize over $3 million in Tuition Assistance to achieve their goals. If you, or your spouse is thinking about taking the next step in your education, stop by their office! Make your time on the island count toward your future goals. If you’re not sure what you’d like to pursue, that’s ok! Begin the conversation, check out your options, and you’ll find your way!

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF... fire prevention
Written By • Melissa Kowaluk Photos by • Jana byrn
Throughout life we are taught many ways to stay safe - in our cars, in our homes, and for our health. But there are also ways to stay safe we must leave in the hands of the professionals, such as the hard-working men and women of the Kadena Fire Prevention Services. They work diligently to ensure the buildings on base are kept up to certain standards to ensure the safety of their occupiers. SSgt Dominic Schultz is a Fire Inspector with Kadena Fire. He is originally from Lebach, Germany, but moved to the states and later joined the Air Force. He follows a set monthly schedule that helps their department keep track of which facilities and buildings have been inspected. Kadena Air Base is one of the largest bases in the Air Force; therefore, the task of ensuring all buildings are safe, is more daunting than one may think. He is also part of the Fire Drill Program and the Risk Management Program. SSgt Schultz creates risk management plans for locations with higher potential hazards, such as airplane hangars, and creates a risk management plan the unit can execute. The humid and salty enviromment of Okinawa contributes to the rapid deterioration of buildings and structures on Kadena. They categorize the structures into two types - Existing Structures and New Construction. Existing Structures are buildings over a certain age and had less than 50% renovation.

alarms seriously and remain. SSgt Schultz emphasized everyone should take all fire-related situations seriously. “If you smell something or you see something, pull the pull station,” said SSgt Schultz. It may be a false alarm, but it is better to err on the side of caution when it comes to fire.
It is better to err on the side of caution when it comes to fire, be prepared “Rust builds up, pipes tear down and the buildings are old so it’s important for us to keep up with them.” They have reference materials that indicates which buildings fall in which category, which allows them to plan accordingly. SSgt Schultz’s favorite part about his position is learning more about the base and about what the different squadrons do. He gets to interact with people from all sorts of disciplines and it gives him a new and different perspective on teamwork in the Air Force. The Fire Prevention office has a big influence on the general population of the base. SSgt Schultz is also responsible for contributing to the public education program through the Fire Prevention office. He and his team go to the schools and units to educate people on how to gauge a fire emergency, what common fires are and how to extinguish them, and how to use the equipment. It is important to keep updated on these topics because chances are most people have not been in a situation that requires the use of an extinguisher, or fire alarm. But the more people know, the better they’ll react. SSgt Schultz explained kids can sometimes be afraid to pull the fire alarm because they’ve been told to stay away from them. But when an emergency occurs, it can give students the time they need to get out of the building. Sometimes, the flip side of this scenario occurs, and residents of common buildings will not take the

Along with attending schools and educating students, SSgt Schultz also visits different squadrons around the base to ensure they know how to react to emergencies. Certain units need special precautions due to the nature of the unit’s work, therefore he ensures they have the skills they need to act accordingly. October is Fire Prevention month, which is dedicated to ensuring people are prepared for fire-related emergencies. They will hold a variety of events beginning the first week of October, including the annual fire parade that goes through Kadena. It’s a great time to bring kids out to participate in fun events while learning necessary life skills. For a list of Fire Prevention Week events, check out page 51 or head over to their Facebook page Kadena, Fire Emergency Services, to see the parade map and get more information.
