We are slowly inching into such a “beautiFALL” season, my personal favorite. Early autumn in Okinawa is the perfect time for outdoor and beach activities like hiking, kayaking, and more. Your Kadena FSS made sure you can savor this warm and cool weather with the best events in town.
Starting off with golf; join the “par-tee” as you enjoy a game of golf with Enlisted and Officers’ Clubs’ 9th Annual Kadena Club Members Golf Tourney to honor their members and swing hard with ODR as they take you on an unforgettable golfing experience in this wonderland.
Enjoy the cooler weather with ITT’s discounted tickets for Southeast Botanical Gardens Illuminations, Ice Skating, and Naha Tug of War. Learn about this island’s history on this month’s Oki Cultural Corner and celebrate Karate Day.
Want to enjoy a starry night by the beach? You’re in time because Okuma Beach’s Camping Under the Stars is on the way! Read more about what Okuma has to offer on this month’s feature highlight.
But wait! We have a special event for your furry friends as well! Karing Kennels is hosting their annual Bow Wow Luau at Kadena Marina so be sure to take advantage of this rare chance of taking your pets to the beach for a “pawsome” time!
If you prefer the indoors, you can head to Emery Lanes and enjoy their Sunday Tournament, sign up for CDC’s monthly class, and learn about managing your spending with M&FRC’s Holiday Spending class. If you’re going to the Air Force Ball, FCC has your back with this month’s Special Parents’ Night Out.
Don’t forget. It’s Spooky Season! Get your scare on with Kadena FSS’ never-ending list of Halloween celebrations to include E’Club’s Halloween Spooky Party, Hagerstrom Pool’s Barktoberfest, Kadena Marina’s Underwater Pumpkin Carving, Okuma Beach’s Haunted Village, and so much more!
Last but not least, show up for the boo’s with 18 FSS Spooky Town while you eat, drink, and be scary! Columbus Day is this month as well so head to your favorite FSS facilities like Emery Lanes and Arts & Crafts for their Columbus Day Specials.
Lots going on this month! But before you get lost in this month’s pages, I want to greet my daughter, Ellie, a happy birthday!
See you next month readers! Happy Fall, Happy Halloween, and have a great Columbus Day!

When looking for a getaway or staycation around the island, Okuma Beach is the perfect place to view the stunning white sands, crystal-clear water, and scenic surroundings wherever you turn. Nestled within the northern part of the island, the long drive is worthwhile for those seeking a relaxing seaside escape. Okuma Beach offers various water and land activities allowing families to immerse in the natural beauty of the island. With the weather slowly cooling down, Okuma makes a perfect spot to enjoy the gentle waves, cooler climate, stunning landscapes, and tranquil ambience.
“Okuma provides a place for our service members and their families to come, let loose, and enjoy the beach,” said Captain Richard Wright, 18 Mission Support Group Det 1 Okuma Recreation Facility commander. “We are proud to provide an array of recreational activities with a focus on creating lasting connections, memories, and enjoyable experiences.”
Supporting and honoring the nation’s service members is what Team Okuma is best at. The welcoming environment and their ability to provide exceptional services are the focal point. With the intensive operational tempo all military installations throughout the island endure protecting and serving the community and our allied partners, taking time out of their busy jobs is essential in enabling them to be mentally and physically prepared to perform at their best.
“Being able to provide the best vacation spot for our airmen is vital and takes teamwork,” Capt. Wright added. “Our team of seven active duty military personnel and roughly 120 local nationals work tirelessly to provide a safe, clean, and fun environment for people to reconnect, relax, and unwind.”
This one-stop resort will make your staycation a breeze even during off-season. Fall and winter months in Okinawa mean more outdoor activities await to be explored, and Okuma has a list of activities to be delved into. Buckle your seatbelt as we provide you all the best actionfilled and relaxing activities this season.
One remarkable celestial experience that Okuma provides is Camping Under the Stars. There is nothing more relaxing than immersing yourself in the outdoors enjoying the fresh air beside a warm campfire as you gaze at the luminous stars that fill the sky. This enchanting experience is best when shared with loved ones while indulging in s’mores. All this, while the waves produce a melodious sound to your camping adventure right by the beach.
“Camping Under the Stars is something we’re proud of because we love showing our customers the beauty of this island even at night,” said Barry Thomas, 18 MSG Det 1 Okuma Outdoor Recreation Facility manager. “Even during off season, the beach is a nice place to camp in and appreciate nature.”
Team Okuma is inviting you to this $1 per starry night escapade beginning in October. Bring your children ages 18 and over and show them all the fun activities you can undertake unique to camping. New campers have the option of conveniently renting out equipment on-site as Okuma aims for a worry-free adventure.
Don’t fret if you want to take your pet camping because Okuma has not forgotten about your furry friends. Camping with Pets is held the first weekend of every month where you can run around the campsite and play fetch all night long. “We want to make everybody happy including our best friends,” Capt. Wright added. Speaking of pet-friendly programs, the Coral Reef Inn at Okuma also offers petfriendly rooms if you prefer staying in an airconditioned room.
Whether you visit with your family or a group of friends, the Coral Reef Inn has a space for you to put your feet up and relax. They have cottages, villas, cabins, condos, bungalows, suites, you name it. The Inn can accommodate up to 18 guests in a condo, their biggest room available.
Planning a staycation? Save big this October at Okuma; you can receive a $10 off your stay when you book a massage. It’s a win, win situation!
Onto activities! Rentals are offered throughout the resort if you don’t have the equipment needed for your desired activities. Okuma’s land and water activities are endless and designed for both beginners and pros alike. Water activities range from ski boat, dive trips, banana boat sled, glass bottom boat tour, coral connection, and a lot more! You can rent jet skis, standup paddleboards, kayaks, snorkel sets, camping gear, fishing set; you name it, they have it! If you prefer land activities, head to the Golf Shack and ask to go golf-karting, (miniature) golfing, and so much more!
Okuma is like your versatile colleague. The resort is not only perfect for getaways as it is also perfect for hosting events. They throw the annual Okuma Beach Fest along with many other big events welcoming everybody to relax and have a good time. The many other amenities this all-around resort offers include an event center where you can hold group gatherings, conferences, family retreats, and more.
Don’t forget about food. Surfside Grill & Bar serves the most delicious meals, hence why they won the recent Dueling Desserts competition! Be sure to stop by and enjoy a meal or two by the beach; talk about the best staycation ever. Lastly, Terrell Hagins, 18 MSG Det 1 Okuma Recreation Facility lodging manager, wanted to inform guests about their Beach Mart.
“Our Beach Mart has a plethora of gift shop merchandise from hats, beach towels, to souvenir cups for camping,” he added. “We all sometimes forget items we need when going on vacation, but you don’t have to worry because the Beach Mart will have anything and everything you might forget coming to the resort.”
This not-so-hidden gem is open for you to enjoy all year round. Team Okuma will ensure you are well taken care of with exceptional service, quality products, and safe activities. They take great pride in delivering services that promote healthy lifestyles and meaningful opportunities for all service members and their families.
“OKUMA PROVIDES A PLACE FOR OUR SERVICE MEMBERS AND THEIR FAMILIES TO COME, LET LOOSE, AND ENJOY THE BEACH”
--Captain Richard Wright 18 Mission Support Group Det 1 Okuma Recreation Facility commander

PAPERWORK IS VERY IMPORTANT as it shows proof of ownership and proper insurance coverage. You run the risk of getting ticketed or having your vehicle impounded if your paperwork is not up to date.
CHECK YOUR TIRES!
After a long hot summer, all rubber items on your vehicle have a tendency to dry rot and crack. For your safety, as well as others, make sure your tires are in good shape.
TIP OF THE MONTH
It is vital to check your vehicle’s fluids, such as the coolant, frequently. Coolant helps maintain the vehicle’s operating temperature. It is not safe to run water through your engine as coolant contains a lubricant to help coat the inner moving parts of the engine, which keeps them from seizing or locking up.

Birthplace of Karate Oct 25: Karate Day
Article by Janelle Rivera | Design by Diana Lopez Hansen
We’ve watched actors showcasing their martial arts abilities on the big screen, particularly in action-filled movies where “Karate,” an esteemed martial art, often takes the spotlight.
Have you ever wondered how karate transpired? The island we call home has been a witness to numerous significant historical events, to include the birth of this robust martial art. Admired for its rigorous techniques and undeniable discipline, karate has consistently captured the interest of many throughout the years.
This sought-after skill originated in the 17th century, back when Okinawa was independently known as the Ryukyu Kingdom. It is said that karate derived from an ancient Okinawan form of self-defense known as “te” and later evolved into “karate,” meaning “empty hand,” with the influences from both the Japanese and Chinese.
It was on October 25, 1936, known as Karate Day, that it was officially named the latter, in dedication to bring peace and happiness to the world.
The art broadened its reach following the disintegration of the Ryukyu Kingdom where more schools developed and became more accessible to the populace. Like a seed planted in fertile soil, the realm of karate blossomed, expanded, and diversified leading to the development of new and enhanced methods especially as Okinawa and Japan unified.
Dojos, a place for karate practitioners and eager students to get immersed in the spiritual and physical aspects of karate, spread around mainland Japan following World War II. It then spread across the world as American students brought their newly learned skill back to their homeland.
As word traveled across the world, enormous amounts of the population in different countries embraced the culture and gained a keen interest and connection with the martial arts’ spiritual home Okinawa.
Given that this is where karate originated, numerous seminars and training camps can be found around the island. Furthermore, Okinawa serves as a haven for karatekas with its infinite museums, sites, and monuments dedicated to the martial art.
Witness a crowd of people, young and old, in traditional karate attire called “Gi” fill the streets of Okinawa as they showcase the greatness of karate on Okinawa’s renowned cultural contribution, Karate Day.
Become a karate practitioner now, and head to Risner Fitness Center’s karate class on Mondays and Wednesdays. Spread peace and happiness as you discover the world of this momentous martial art with Kadena FSS!

Does my workload or my performance change my position’s grade?
Workload (volume of work) is not considered when conducting job analysis. Classi cation review focuses on the type and level of work being performed, not the amount of work. Doubling the workload (volume of work), if the duties are of the same type and level, would have no impact on the classi cation factors. So, your job does not need re-evaluation. Same for the performance, the classi cation review does not consider performance factors such as quality of work, timeliness, quantity, etc., but rather is concerned with type and level of work being performed.

Get ready to “fall” in love with Okinawa even more this autumn season! Take in the cooler weather while you enjoy the majestic views of this hidden gem of an island. Whether you venture out hiking, driving to the highest of restaurants, or hunting for “secret” locations, the oceanic view will constantly be one of the better parts of every adventure trip you take. This month’s entries highlight just that; the most captivating jewel that attracts visitors to the island: the ocean.
After one full week of listening to the howling strong winds and being stranded indoors due to a typhoon, @_daphneyj excitedly stepped outside and drove to a breathtakingly amazing view of the ocean. It’s moments like this when most recognize how lucky we are to be able to be a drive away from such an astonishing view. She mesmerizingly gazed as boats float on the clear blue ocean with a landscape of mountains on the horizon.
The view from up above is magnificent, but being able to feel the sand beneath your toes presents a different perspective. @delightfulshots had the opportunity to capture a baby on the shore with his tiny feet buried in the sand and eyes filled with curiosity. The iconic Okinawa rock formations and the gentle waves of the ocean create such an alluring backdrop, making it a perfect “Summer in Oki” shot.
Last but not the least, @thekawaiiseeall climbed the numerous tetrapods along the seawall looking over the ocean. Okinawa relies on tetrapods to battle the ocean current especially during natural disasters. They have become an Okinawa staple wherein one looks to climb in one to capture the amazing view of where the ocean and calming blue sky meet.
Good news! October in Okinawa means cooler weather; the perfect time to go outdoors, in my opinion. Hurry and plan your beach and hiking trips with friends and loved ones now! Bad news, your monthly #FindSomethingSpecial will be taking a break next month. Please do keep the submissions coming for when we come back!
Don’t forget, use the hashtag #FindSomethingSpecial when posting your ventures on Instagram. Make sure your profile is set to public for us to view your beautiful submissions. See you soon, readers!
