Note
I will forever insist that October is the best month. Halloween is at the top of the reasons why I love October, and there are tons of events happening on Kadena that can feed your spooky spirit. Visit page 51 for a break down of all the Club events and find one that fits your favorite way to celebrate. Fright Fest at Okuma is another fall favorite of mine. It happens on November 2nd, so we’re going to call that close enough that it can be included in my October excitement. Okuma is a great time even when there is no event happening, but when something like Fright Fest happens it simply can’t be beat. October also brings Okinawa’s festival season into full swing. I cannot recommend enough the festivals found all over Okinawa. The sense of community, the culture, and all of the fun to be had makes seeing a festival a “must-do” item on your Okinawa bucket list. I saved the very best part for last, though. Domo Days happens in October! Allow FSS to thank you for your continued support and patronage by taking part in our various sales and giveaways throughout the week. See page 32 for more information. There is so much to do on Kadena and beyond, so “Venture” out and find a new experience to enjoy!

Written by Elizabeth Bryan Festival season is my favorite time of year in Japan. The atmosphere reminds me of some of my fondest childhood memories of enjoying the county fair with my family. The food and entertainment may be a bit different, but the environment of community and fun is exactly the same! I encourage everyone to take the opportunity to experience multiple festivals during their time here. Each one has something unique to enjoy! The Naha Tug of War is probably the most well-known of the festivals on Okinawa. It even holds a world record for the largest tug of war rope! Believe me, the scale of it really is impressive. During my first year on island, we went early to get close to the main rope, and it was taller than me! The competitive spirit, colorful cultural costumes, and community of the event captivated me. Before I knew it, I was pulling with all my might so that my side (the east) would win. After the tug of war is done, the festival kicks off with parades of eisa and karate performers. My family really got to explore the Naha area for the first time at the Naha Tug of War. We purchased many different souvenirs and ate delicious food. It is one of my first memories of our time here, and I really can’t recommend it enough. The Shi Shi Mai Festival is also one for your Okinawa photo albums. The vibrant costumes are a truly stunning backdrop to an entrancing afternoon. Many believe that Shisa protect against evil spirits and bring good fortune. The festival is filled with performances from different areas of Okinawa, each area has unique dance styles and costumes. If you haven’t seen a lion dance yet, this is the place to do it! The Shisas are full of personality when they perform and often interact with the audience. The dancers who accompany them are also a delight to watch, with acrobatic and 22 FOR ADDITIONAL PROGRAMMING PLEASE VISIT KADENAFSS.COM
rhythmic movement that will have you bobbing your head along to the traditional music. The Tedako Festival is probably the festival I love the best, and one that I make a point to always attend. The environment is reminiscent of county fairs you find in the states. You can walk around and grab food from various vendors, watch performances by taiko drummers, and enjoy live music. The more casual “walk around” atmosphere of the event is what makes me feel right at home. The best part is the fireworks display that ends the day. I am huge fan of fireworks, and there is something particularly enjoyable about watching them on cool fall nights when Okinawa’s weather is at its best. I hadn’t heard about the Yomitan Festival until last year, and I was too late to enjoy it. Photographs from my friends made me put it on my list for this year, and I am excited to attend. The performance of classical Ryukyuan music by 300 local musicians is something I am eager to watch. I am a huge fan of the Sanshin. This musical instrument has such a unique sound filled with a strong, echoing vibration that I have only experienced in Okinawa. The true showstopper of the festival is the landlocked boat after it is lit in the evening. The photographs alone were stunning, and I cannot wait to see it in person. Schedule a trip with Kadena ITT and let them handle the stress of travel and parking so you can enjoy the festival to the fullest. Kadena ITT offers tours to multiple festivals throughout the year so make sure to take advantage of them. Make some forever memories of your time on Okinawa.

5 October • Closed for power outage | 31 October • Closed for maintenance and training How to JCI your own vehicle Alternating Tuesdays • 10 am Alternating Thursdays • 5 pm The class will go over the various aspects of JCI inspection, paperwork, where to go, yen vs. dollars, basic exterior visual inspection, common failures of inspection, and more.
Let us handle it! If you don’t want to do this process yourself there are multiple shops that can help you with the process on and off base, like Kadena Auto Hobby Shop! We can do your JCI for you! Give us a call at 966-7356 or message us on Facebook @KadenaAutoHobby to book your appointment.
JCI FAQ What is JCI? JCI, or Japanese Compulsory Insurance, is a government regulated and mandated safety inspection that must be done every two years for cars and motorcycles in Japan. Why is it important to start your JCI renewal process 30 days in advance? You can complete your car’s JCI 30 calendar days in advance and still retain the original expiration day. If repairs are needed, you have time to complete them. Don’t rush! Waiting to the last minute means you can’t look for less expensive avenues. What do JCI inspectors look for? Inspectors look for leaks, missing parts, worn/cracked rubber parts, abnormal noises, wear and tear, emissions, all external lighting, dashboard warning lights, and unauthorized modifications. Where do I find when my JCI is due? On the bottom left corner of your base registration, you will find the expiration date in English. Why is JCI so expensive? Before drivers can have the inspection done, they must pay the Japanese Compulsory Insurance that is a set fee of ¥12,890. Weight tax varies and ranges between ¥15,600 and ¥17,000. Yellow plates have different prices. The inspection portion fee is $25. If you complete your JCI at a garage, there is an average garage fee of $140. Car age, condition, and maintenance are factors in how many repairs are needed. What happens if my JCI expires because I missed it? You cannot drive the car without suffering a series of penalties. Tow the car to a garage to do the inspection. Driving with an out-of-date JCI can result in driving privileges being suspended. • Expired 5 days or less gives 3 pts to license. • Expired 5 days to 30 days gives 3 pts to license and vehicle impoundment. • Expired 30 days to 6 months gives 6 pts to license and vehicle impoundment. • Expired 6 months or more means a 6 month revocation of license and vehicle impoundment.

Welcome to FSS, what can we do for you? Kadena Air Base is the first military installation I have ever lived on. No one in my immediate family had ever served in the military, and my husband is a first-generation military member. So, when we first moved here, I had a ton of questions. Some were kind of standard for moving to a new area: what to do for fun, where to eat, and who can I hang out with? Other questions were specific to packing up your life and moving halfway across the globe: where do I work, how do I ship packages, and how quickly do I need to learn Japanese? I have lived on Okinawa for 5 years now and, if you allow me to humble brag a bit, I know my way around #okilife quite well. I definitely still remember the confusion I felt my first few months out here. To be perfectly frank, I didn’t really understand the base until I started my first job with the 18th Force Support Squadron (FSS). One of the first things I did when we moved here was search the web for jobs, which lead me to nafjobs.org and my first job underneath the FSS umbrella. Getting connected at work taught me so much about life on Kadena, and now I get to pass that information on to you! FSS is a keystone to a morale, welfare, and recreation (MWR) operations, as well as support services and activities. Whether you want to start learning Japanese (check out A&FRC and the Schilling Community Center for classes or the Kadena Library if you prefer self-paced learning), grab a bite to eat, have some fun, or want to pick up your care package and mail something home, FSS is there to help. With that large of an umbrella it can be a bit confusing to determine what exactly falls under FSS. Most of the FSS facilities you interact with as a customer can be found listed in the
directory on pages 63 and 64. Some examples are: the Rocker Enlisted Club, Officers’ Club, Okuma Beach, Chili’s, Risner Fitness Center, the Post Office, the Education & Training Center, and Kadena Marina. From this list alone you can see the diverse services FSS offers. The breadth of FSS is one of the reasons “Venture” magazine came to be. “Venture” is your handy guide to the wonderful programs and events provided by FSS. Now that you have an idea of what FSS is, I think it is helpful to understand what FSS is not. One thing I have heard a lot is people thinking FSS controls the Exchange or Commissary, which isn’t true. FSS doesn’t control any of the stores inside the Exchange or Express areas either, like Subway, Pizza Hut, and Popeyes! The only chain restaurant under FSS are the Chili’s locations. One of my favorite activities in my time working with FSS is jetskiing. To me, nothing beats zipping around beautiful blue ocean at Kadena Marina or Okuma Beach. While I am generally a pretty nervous person when it comes to speed, I feel comfortable on the water knowing that my landing won’t be on the pavement! If you are interested in almost any marine sport, FSS has the resources to get you started. Your time on Okinawa is limited and the ocean is beautiful, be sure to make the most of the opportunities while you are here! My favorite restaurant out here is also run by FSS, Café Latte! If you are a fan of comfort food, it absolutely doesn’t get better than their fourcheese bacon grilled cheese and tomato soup. In addition to great menu options, you can get your coffee fix from Daily Grind or a cool treat
FOR OPEN POSITIONS, PLEASE VISIT NAFJOBS.ORG AND USAJOBS.GOV
from our ice cream truck, Oki Scoops! Make sure you stay on the look out for the many limited time offers every month in our restaurants. Out of all the great things FSS makes happen, my favorites are the events. Eggsplosion, Kadena Music Festival, and Tinsel Town are what makes this base feel like a community and home to me. I love being able to go attend and see my neighbors and friends laughing and having fun. Meeting new people and making connections is key to resiliency on this tiny island we call home. Seeing live music is pretty great too! Truly, I think that the idea of supporting the community is where FSS really shines. Much of what makes Kadena feel like home to me is because of the efforts of over 2,000 FSS employees across base. In July FSS divided into two sister squadrons, the 18th Force Support Squadron and the 718th Force Support Squadron. This division happened to make sure all the different FSS responsibilities could be handled with greater efficiency and organization. A quick look at all of the activities listed in the back of the magazine can give you an idea of just how much work is done by FSS every day and why this change was necessary. Just remember, that while our names might have changed a bit, our commitment to serving and supporting Kadena hasn’t! You will still be calling the same phone numbers, e-mailing the same people, and going to the same buildings as always. Also, Domo Days is happening October 13 - 19 and it is our way of thanking you for your patronage. Check out pages 32 - 35 for details on all of the extra special things we have going on! To stay up to date with everything FSS make sure to follow us on Facebook @KadenaFSS or visit our website www.kadenafss.com!
