Note
Welcome to this month’s Venture Magazine, and happy October! The FSS has worked really hard to bring fall feels to our little island with this issue, and I am sure you won’t be disappointed. If you are looking for your pumpkin spice fix, Risn’ Shine inside the Risner Fitness Center is featuring a pumpkin spice shake for the whole month of October! Check it out on the food spread on pages 38 - 39. Schilling is also contributing to the fall vibes with a showing of the classic Hocus Pocus, head over to page 11 to see their lineup of films for Film Fridays. Halloween falls on Saturday this year, and if you are looking for a little get away, Okuma is hosting a weekend event, Fright Fest! Costume contests, scary movies, and other fun things for the whole family. Flip to page 27 and read about the underwater pumpkin contest the Kadena Marina is hosting. My favorite event to share with you this month is the much anticipated opening of the new fitness center! Habu Fitness Center will be opening its doors with a grand opening ceremony this month! Check out their info on page 31. We can’t wait for you to enjoy all these events this month, we truly are supporting the best community here on Kadena!

By Meagan Abell Back to school has a different vibe this year. Whether you are homeschooling, virtual learning or your kiddos are in smaller class sizes, the traditional school day has a different feel. While parents navigate this school year and some of the hardships it might bring, the Airmen & Family Readiness Center (A&FRC) has good news! A grant is available to eligible families affected financially by the pandemic. The Air Force Aid Society (AFAS) recognizes that our Air Force families may face extra expenses due to the virtual schooling environment that has been prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic. For a limited time, the AFAS is offering a one-time $250 grant to eligible Air Force families with a financial need to help with costs associated with virtual schooling for their dependents in

grades K through 12. Please contact the A&FRC or continue to the following link for more information and to apply: https://staging.afas.org/virtual-schooling-grant/ “Virtual Resources” is a phrase that will be repeated plenty more times this school year, but the Kadena Library wants your family to know they have plenty of free options to help your at-home learner. For example, Scholastic Teachables is a free resource that offers printable activities, puzzles, and games to help your student. It also offers thousands of lesson plans. If your elementary school student needs a little boost with math, reading comprehension, science, or any other subject, there is a lesson plan for you. Don’t forget you can print for free at the library! If your kids are looking for an extra-curricular activity to do at home to break up the school day, don’t forget about Arts & Crafts virtual classes! From wreath making to ceramics to the mud factory, they offer a variety! Follow their social media for more information about what kits they have available for pick up, and when their next virtual class is happening!

here is no better way to celebrate the spooky season than to carve a pumpkin…underwater? Living on an island in the Pacific has many warm, sunny, beachy, perks. However, when fall rolls around, it is safe to assume plenty of folks miss the pumpkin patches and crisp air that tags along with autumn. The Kadena Marina has found a way to satisfy that craving of fall while reminding us how great it is to live on this beautiful island with an underwater pumpkin carving contest! What does underwater pumpkin carving entail? Exactly what you think! Diving underwater with your buddy, weighing down a pumpkin, and the Kadena Marina will provide a pumpkin and carving kit. You do the rest! You and a buddy will have to put your creative side to the test as you work together to create the best pumpkin. There will be prizes for the winners. Space is limited, so be sure to come to the Marina in advance to sign up! Teams consist of two people. Must be certified and provide your own gear. Costumes encouraged! For more information about the Underwater Pumpkin Carving Contest, be sure to follow Kadena Marina at facebook.com/KadenaFSSMarina.

When you are standing on Kadena Air Base and see a military aircraft in the sky, do you realize how many different operations work to make that flight possible? Recently, the 18th Operations Support Squadron (OSS), sat down with us to break down the different ways they support Kadena’s mission. Senior Airman Andrew Jeffers is an air traffic controller for the 18 OSS. Jeffers explained that the control tower on Kadena has a goal to provide safe and expeditious aircraft flow, whether on the ground or in air. “Pilots get to go home at the end of the day because of what we do,” Jeffers said. Jeffers also attributed the challenge and fast pace of the job as his favorite aspects of being in the tower. He also mentioned working with many different aircrafts sets this base apart from other control towers on other bases.
Pilots get to go home at the end of the day because of what we do. Staff Sergeant Jacob Winn, an intelligence analyst for the squadron, shared that his job is to help provide decision-makers information that is advantageous on the battlefield. Winn currently works on a team of six that allows intelligence to flying squadrons on base and the Wing Commander. “Every briefing needs tailoring for that platform,” Winn said. In addition to providing intelligence, Winn mentioned that shifting mental gears and adapting briefs in a fast-paced environment is unique to this base and a rewarding part of his job. If you are curious about the survival gear inside the aircraft, the 18 OSS supports that, too. Staff Sergeant Will Flores Saez serves in the aircrew flight equipment

18th Operations Support Squadron satellite shop (AFE). This shop is the most extensive in the 18 OSS. Flores Saez operates, along with five other shops, on the aircraft’s survival equipment and ejection seats for the F-15’s. Flores Saez said that his favorite part of his job is working with all the different flying squadrons. “The mission is not going to wait, we have to be ready at all times,” Flores Saez said. In addition to working on the ejection seats, the AFE shops also sustain helmets, masks, and night vision goggles to aircrew.
the mission is not going to wait, we have to be ready at all times. A significant factor for the mission revolves around weather. The OSS houses the Operations Support Weather flight. Staff Sergeant Corbin Dicus shared that while the 18 OSS does not issue weather warnings or TCCOR levels, the weather craftsmen team prepares information and briefs wing leadership. This is essential in protecting the base and its assets. Dicus also stated that the weather support flight is integrated into every flying squadron. An airfield forecaster has a desk in every flying squadron to brief crews on weather conditions before the mission. Controlling the skies, supplying aircrew with survival equipment, providing intelligence, and interpreting weather patterns are just a few ways the 18 OSS supports the mission. It is unanimous across the 18 OSS team that Kadena’s fast-paced nature sets this squadron apart from others. The interaction with multiple squadrons creates an exemplary work environment for this hardworking and well-rounded group of men and women. Be sure to think of them next time you hear the sound of jets racing across the sky.
