Check out this month’s issue for fun outings like bouldering and cave spelunking, or go on a local tour with Kadena ITT to see the Shuri Castle Moonlight Fair. If you’re itching to see a new place, take it a step further and book an off-island tour and see Hong Kong and Shanghai. If you’re a trivia whiz and think you could outsmart the competition, the Officers’ Club is introducing the PubStumpers Trivia League! Check out page 41 for more information. September is Hispanic Heritage month and there’s no better way to celebrate than with delicious food and dance! Check out page 40 for details. We’re also looking ahead into October, which will be packed with awesome events including Beer, Bourbon and Bacon, and the Khalid concert! Flip through, because there is always something for everyone to enjoy.

TRAVEL

[Her favorite part about the job is to] “show our customers how beautiful Okinawa is and to make them happy!” Written By • Melissa Kowaluk Photo by • Jana byrn Kadena Information, Tickets & Travel should be your first stop when planning a tour or a fun local outing. They put together great tours that immerse you into the local culture, or help you see new parts of the world. Minako Ishikawa, or Mina-san, is the Local Tour Coordinator for Kadena ITT. She has been with FSS since 2005 and has loved working with her amazing team, otherwise known as the #ITTDreamTeam and #TeamKrupnick! She collaborates with nine tour guides, two drivers, and 33 local vendors to put together memorable tours for her customers. Mina-san is from Nishihara Town here in Okinawa, so she’s had her whole life to learn about great tours around the island. Oftentimes, the staff at Kadena ITT gets to travel with the tours to new places. Mina-san has traveled to Tokyo and all over Okinawa. Her favorite has been going up to Tokyo and seeing the Tokyo Tower, going to Tokyo Disney, watching Sumo tournaments, and experiencing the fast-paced Tokyo lifestyle. On Okinawa, her favorite place to visit is Zamami Island - it boasts spectacular views and colorful fish to observe, what’s not to love? Mina-san helps coordinate over 30 local tours and private tours. Her favorite part about the job is to “show her customers how beautiful Okinawa is and to make them happy!” She also enjoys building business relationships with local and international vendors.

Mina-san explained the different elements of putting a tour together can sometimes take over a month to plan! Next time the travel bug bites you, head over to Kadena ITT and let the ITT Dream Team help you explore new places!

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF... 44th fighter squadron

Written By • Melissa Kowaluk Photos by • Jana byrn

You hear them every day as they soar over the skies of Okinawa and train to optimize their capabilities as the forefront of our air defense - the 44th Fighter Squadron pilots have anything but an average day at the office. Captain Robert ‘Slip’ Oehmke from Tuscon, Arizona, A Flight Commander and F-15C Flight Lead, and Captain Peter ‘Crok’ Gawor from Ft. Lauderdale, Aircraft Commander and F-15C Wingman, explained the behind-the-scenes planning the training entails. Almost all their daily missions are directly dictated by the weather conditions, whether its daytime or nighttime flying. It determines the types of missions they can train for and what sort of objective they’ll have that day. Upon arrival to the squadron every day, the pilots brief and learn the tactical objectives, get assigned a jet, and fly anywhere from 45 minutes to 3 hours. After the flights, they debrief and learn what they can improve based on each other’s experiences. Every day is a good day in their minds, because no matter how much preparation goes into a flight, they get to board the aircraft and fly over our beautiful island. “There’s nothing quite like a dreary day 38 FOR ADDITIONAL PROGRAMMING PLEASE VISIT KADENAFSS.COM

here, because no matter what, we strap into the plane and go fly above the clouds,” explained Capt Gawor. They are always finding new ways to improve their tactics and capabilities. The fighter squadrons here conduct specialized missions that include night flying. They train and fly using nightvision goggles when it is pitch black! When the pilots are not flying, they’re studying past missions and making sure all is prepared and ready on the aircraft. All possible scenarios are considered while training and studying to be confident they’ll know what to do in emergency situations. They not only have to be self-assured, they must also trust each other’s abilities. With the crash of the F-15 pilot earlier this year, they

experienced first-hand that anything can happen at any moment, and they must be ready. It’s their job to defend everyone in the air - every tanker, every cargo plane, and every helicopter - and make sure all missions can be fully executed. “We have to be incredibly good at our job to make sure everyone can go home to their families,” said Capt Oehmke. Real-world and training missions are always planned weeks in advance and they require constant communication with various other squadrons to succeed. Just because they are flying on a given day, does not mean they just decided to go for a ride that morning, explained Capt Gawor. It is all part of a strategic, tactical, and purpose-driven mission. They must collaborate with the air controllers, maintainers, and even the Japanese Self Defense Force to fine-tune logistical details before taking off. Since the jets exit American airspace the minute they pass over the base, they must stay in constant contact with the Naha airspace controllers to make sure everyone knows who is operating in which airspace. Collaborating with the forces of allied nations is one of the roles that many military members take on as they train in conjuction with foreign military forces. Such is the case when the F-15 pilots fly and train with the Japanese Air Self Defense Force F-15s. They fly in formation, alongside one another to train and prepare in case of crisis situations that would require allied forces to take action. They maintain a great relationship with their Japanese counterparts through clear and continuous communication. As a recent result of these good channels of communication, the Japanese Self Defense Force was a vital help as they quickly sent

their Search and Rescue team for the F-15 pilot who ejected and crashed into the ocean. “As soon as it happened, it was clear that all of the hours of training did not go over anyone’s head,” said Capt Gawor, “we had so much support, and from the ground, I could see that the Earth moved to rescue him. No matter what nationality you were, everyone was going on the exact same path to rescue him.” Although fighter pilots don’t always take the same route to achieve their position, most have worked their whole lives to be where they are. “In order to get here, you have to do well in high school, go to four or five year college, and then get into Undergraduate Pilot Training,” explained Capt Oehmke. And that’s just the beginning - due to the high intensity and demanding environment, one must be in top physical and mental health to succeed as Capt Oehmke explained. As a way to get involved with the local community, the 44th squadron holds a Career Day for school age kids. The pilots show the kids around the jets and answer any questions they may have about being a fighter pilot. Capt Oehmke went on to explain that as young leaders, they understand they have a responsibility to guide and help others. He explained he recently gave a young Airman advice on how to become a pilot after being asked, and not long ago received a thank you email from that same Airman who has now entered college and the Reserve Officer Training Corps with the desire to be selected for Undergraduate Pilot Training after college. Through hard work and determination, anyone’s goals can be achieved. Military lifestyles can be hard as it is, But the pilots’ schedules are different every day, week, and month depending on weather and training requirements. Having love and support from spouses and family members is vital to success and Capt Ohemke and Capt Gawor wanted to thank their wives Megan and Lauren for standing by them every day.
