No! Summer’s almost over! Hurry and enjoy these last few escapades before summer ends. Spend the last moments of this season with a bang with your one and only best Kadena FSS companion. There are lots going on this month, from indoor to outdoor activities, Labor Day specials, and, drum roll please… Oktoberfest 2023!
First, food and entertainment doesn’t stop at both Kadena Clubs. Enslited Club is on a roll with their enormous bingo events with this month’s 50k Bingo while the Officers’ Club will keep your stomach full with Barrio Fiesta, a buffet full of delicious Filipino cuisines. That’s not all, Enlisted Club is also celebrating National Cream-Filled Donut Day for all the donut aficionados.
Speaking of Bingo, warm up and win big prizes at Schilling Community Center’s Baller Bingo before heading to the E’Club! They are also gearing up for this year’s Ghostess with the Mostest Unit Challenge so hurry, register, and show off your unit’s winning masterpiece.
Lastly, if you’re into creating unique shirts, Arts & Crafts now offers their very own T-shirt Printing Service. Let your imagination run wild as you bring your shirt design to life with their help!
For those who want to enjoy the epilogue of summertime, Outdoor Recreation is offering trips and activities all month long to include a cycling and swimming trip at Kouri Island, snorkeling with whale sharks, and more. ITT is taking advantage of the last days of summer with a Busena glass bottom boat and observatory adventure and many more.
Okuma Beach will celebrate in color with their Color Fun Run and help protect the marine ecosystem with their Beach Cleanup event. If you miss Okuma’s color run, Risner Fitness Center will get you started right on the celebration with their Oktoberfest 5k. Get a break from all the running with Shogun Auto Care Center’s Cycles & Cars and enjoy a night full of tricked out cars, music, and food.
To give thanks, Emery Lanes, Arts & Crafts, and Risner Fitness Center are offering Labor Day specials and sales.
September is made a more special one because it’s the U.S. Air Force’s birthday month and Oktoberfest 2023! No need to look for a babysitter because FCC’s Special Parents’ Night Out is your ally for this year’s Air Force Ball next month.
Lastly, revel in this year’s “brewtiful” Oktoberfest festivity. ‘Tis the season to Wiesn with mouthwatering food and beverages, marvelous entertainment, and oh-so-fun contests! Please drink responsibly.
See you there, readers!

“Knowledge is power.”
Over the past few decades, American tourists have been fortunate enough to be graced with Setusuko Inafuku’s, an ITT tour guide of 31 years, expertise on Okinawan history and culture. One tour that stands out to her the most is the one location with the most painful history and well-regarded site, the famous three-part Battle of Okinawa tour. Setsuko-san, born in Okinawa during the war, is nothing short of an expert of this war; however, many people seek her knowledge and wisdom due to her intimate and personal approach of recollecting the events. According to Setsuko-san, the shared history between the U.S. and Japan is necessary for people to absorb; as she explains, “always study [because] knowledge is power.”
ITT has all the resources and expertise you need to learn about and explore the island. Gain access and book a Battle of Okinawa Tour today! Kadena

a beautiful testament to the power of family in molding one’s career and passion in life.
“My mom worked in the food service industry, so I witnessed her love for cooking and her incredible work ethic,” Chef Wes said. “I learned from watching her cook and since she had to work, I had to cook dinner for my two brothers.”
Initially, Chef Wes’ aspiration wasn’t to pursue a culinary career; instead, his dream was to become a graphic artist. Due to the “starving artist” mentality in the past,
It’s not uncommon
for U.S. military bases around the globe to have club complexes that serve the military community. These club complexes often offer a variety of amenities and services to cater to the needs and entertainment of service members and their families.
In the case of Kadena Air Base, their Enlisted and Officers’ Clubs have gained a reputation for being one of the biggest and best in the entire U.S. Air Force. These clubs pay an essential role in enhancing the quality of life for not only the service members, but also their families and more. People visit the clubs routinely as they offer a sense of community alongside the many valuable resources, entertainment, and the delicious and delectable food.
Speaking of food, here lies a culinary expert who formulates an exceptional dining experience that satisfies the palates of many frequent and new customers. With the bustling mission of this base, it’s
imperative to ensure the people behind it are well taken care of.
Having a passionate and talented chef like E. Wesley Hussey, better known as “Chef Wes,” both clubs and the many Force Support Squadron facilities he serves make a significant difference in the satisfaction and well-being of the military and civilian communities.
With every amazing chef comes an inspiration as to why they started. The motivation that Chef Wes draws from his mother and grandmother is
“I consider myself fortunate to have such an exceptional team here, capable of turning a mere photo of food into a culinary masterpiece that excels in both technicality and taste” - CHEF WES
his parents weren’t on board of this chosen path.
“As a naïve 18-year-old, I put on a suit and went on job interviews thinking I could start off my career as a manager,” Chef Wes added. Which quickly humbled him when he got hired as a dishwasher.
Wes embarked on a journey to explore various aspects of the food industry business, gradually advancing his way up the ladder before ultimately choosing to enlist in the military where he got selected as one of over 200 Di-
rect Duty Assignment Club managers due to his experience.
After a decade of service in the military, Wes secured a civilian position at another military base working his way to Kadena. He considers the Kadena team to be among the finest.
“I consider myself fortunate to have such an exceptional team here, capable of turning a mere photo of food into a culinary masterpiece that excels in both technicality and taste,” he added. He chose to stay in Okinawa for its beauty, beaches, and cuisine, but, most importantly, for the devoted and passionate people he works with along with the abundance of fresh and locally sourced products the island offers.
For 10 years, Wes and his team have been bringing joy and comfort to people with their food, but also feels the pressure to meet their customer’s expectations. His driving force to keep going is the
positivity it brings seeing the customers happy and passing on his legacy by teaching others to share his passion for creating delicious food. The food journey doesn’t just happen in a blink of an eye. Each dish comes with months of failed recipes and tireless nights to produce the right mixture of perfection, which sometimes can take four to six weeks. “It’s a trial-and-error process so we must have patience,” Wes shared.
Want to give Chef Wes and his team’s masterpiece dishes a try? Their delectable creations and pastries have quite a presence at various FSS facilities to include the Enlisted and Officers’ Clubs, Tee House, FSS food trucks, and more.
The OkiDough-ki Bakery, a central bakery, supports most of Kadena, including Okuma Beach and Seaside.
From working as a dishwasher to where he is now, Wes feels a profound sense of pride as he looks at the team with great admiration, with whom he calls his second family. He has witnessed people come and go but majority of his team have stayed dedicated, con-
sistently delivering their very best.
“The key secret to making the finest cuisine in town is the consistency and maintaining a close-knit team with a shared goal: to create delectable dishes that bring happiness to customers,” said Wes. “I love hearing how the meals we serve reminds them of home, past experiences, vacations, and their mom’s recipes.”
Being overseas also poses a challenge to many, but having the clubs and FSS restaurants give people a sense of home and safety-net. “People who are away from family come back to

Chef Wes couldn’t possibly get to where he is now without the unwavering support of his family. Balancing work and personal life should not be underestimated. “My wife helped me realize the importance of taking a break from my
job,” he exclaimed. “I’ve learned that finding time for other things is a healthy practice. For me, one should know when you need to be [at work] and know when you don’t need to be [at work].”
Chef Wes expresses his gratitude for discovering his passion and being able to pursue it alongside a remarkable team.
“Food brings people together. It is a social gathering and an unforgettable experience.”

When, What, and How to Introduce Solid Foods to Infants
SCHOOL AGE CARE PROGRAMS
BABIES NEED solid food to get enough nutrients for growth and development as they get older. Introducing solids helps babies learn how to eat, giving them an experience of new tastes and textures from a range of foods. It develops their teeth and jaws, and builds skills for language development.
Our School Age Care offers a chance for your child to explore his or her individual interests by empowering them to make responsible, personal choices. Our trained staff takes pride in offering a variety of Boys and Girls Clubs of America (B&GCA) and 4-H programming. Both School Age Care locations offer clubs and environments centered on the interests of the children.
In addition to the everyday activities, our School Age Care locations offer a 10-week summer camp with weekly field trips and endless hours at the base pool. We also have family events like spaghetti night, family chili cook-off, Soup-4-You and our popular ice cream socials.

# F ind S omething S pecial
By Janelle Rivera
Wake me up when September’s here. Summer is ending so here’s a “half-a-year-in-review,” #FindSomethingSpecial edition, of a few activities you have undertaken and shared with us through Instagram. You all continue to amaze us with the picturesque views you find all over the island and have inspired so many of us to step outside and delve into the many wonders Okinawa has to offer.
@shawnainman_ and her husband made sure to capture this charming moment in front of the bougainvillea tower after spending a beautiful sunny day at the Southeast Botanical Gardens. This photo radiates with love and happiness as they enjoyably posed for a photo to commemorate their fun day trip.
@zugzee drove to the beach for some needed break out of her busy life to celebrate Marine Day or “Umi no Hi.” We love seeing the military community taking part in Japanese holidays and experience Okinawa the best way one could, a day at the beach. This photo gives us a sense of happiness as Ziah danced her way to the shore for some needed beach time.
@justin3lu_ captured something very special during whale watching season as he witnessed the big friendly giants of the deep blue ocean in full action. It’s mesmerizing to see this perfect action shot of a humpback whale as its tail gracefully breaks into the water giving onlookers an unforgettable sight to see. Watch and behold these bigwinged creatures in their natural habitat as they migrate to the Okinawa seas between the months of January to March.
Calling all adventure seekers, we are on the second half of the year! Take advantage of this beautiful weather and explore as much as you can before the year ends. When you do #FindSomethingSpecial, keep us in mind and use the hashtag for a chance to be featured. Who knows, you might find your photo here next month! ‘Til next time!
Note: Please make sure your profile is set to public for us to view and be able feature your stunning snapshots.
