TRAVEL

Written by Ellen Ice When I picture Okuma, the first thing that comes to mind is lush greenery, turquoise water, and a picturesque rocky shoreline. Everything about Okuma is an oasis, and now the installation is working on “going green” through a variety of environmentally friendly initiatives. If you have an electric car, you can now add Okuma to your list of EV charging stations! Currently they have one station, with more in the works. For other green modes of transportation, make sure to stop by Outdoor Recreation at Okuma and rent a bicycle, paddleboard, or kayak. Alternative travel modes are the perfect way to reduce your carbon footprint while exercising! Every year, Okuma recycles around 18,000 pounds of materials. This year, they amped up their recycling efforts by asking guests to reuse towels and linens in their rooms, saving both water and electricity. Okuma’s restaurant, Surfside Grill & Bar, is moving towards green options over the next year. Okuma is working to utilize biodegradable options to help cut down on waste. The Okuma Beach store located next to check-in is also doing away with plastic bags. Coming soon, guests will have the option to purchase a reusable bag or supply their own. The big question of all these efforts is ‘why’? Why go through the effort of implementing these policies? The answer is simple, because Okuma cares. They care about their guests’ experiences, and their duty to help protect the ecosystem the resort sits on. Okuma is home to nearly 500 species of flora and fauna. Some

20 FOR ADDITIONAL PROGRAMMING PLEASE VISIT KADENAFSS.COM

species are at risk of becoming endangered according to a natural resources survey conducted in 2018. Of the flora, seven species were determined to be significant, which means near threatened or vulnerable. Two examples include the whisk fern and sea ebony. Of the fauna, eleven species were also categorized significant. The land hermit crab and the purple land hermit crab are now classified as protected. Some examples of unique animals you can find at Okuma include the western osprey, Japanese pygmy woodpecker, Okinawa five-lined skink, and the Orii flying fox. One of my favorite activities at Okuma is walking the hiking trails to look for all the birds, crustaceans, and lizards. I have even spotted a brown hawk owl! With all of the wildlife present at Okuma, it is important to remember that the new pet-friendly rooms have regulations in place to protacte the delicate ecosystem the resort is located on. These regulations ensure your pet and local wildlife don’t have the opportunity to interact. This means local wildlife, pets, and guests can have a safe and enjoyable experience! Okuma isn’t alone in its status as a hidden ecotourism spot, there are many similar spots to enjoy in Northern Okinawa! Check out our favorites in the “Visit Me!” section on the next page. If you want to help keep Okuma beautiful, join the beach cleanup day in mid-September. In order to preserve the beauty that is Okuma, we all need to do our part. Here’s to Going Green!

Find Your S pot No matter where life takes you, the right job can be hard to find. Okinawa is no exception. However, if you are here as a military spouse, there are quite a few options available to make finding employment easier! The first thing to understand is how the spouse hiring preference works. If you are ever uncertain about your eligibility or what jobs will use your preference, contact the Human Resource Office at 634-2330 or Civilian Personnel Office at 634-2228! The next thing to know is where to go to apply. Many of the jobs available to spouses on Okinawa are found on https://www.nafjobs.org and usajobs.gov. Make sure to check back regularly as new jobs are posted all the time! The last major thing to be aware of is that many government jobs require special resume formatting. The resume used to apply for private sector employment may need an update as federal employment requires a particular format and more detailed information. The Airman & Family Readiness Center offers assistance with tailoring your resume to the federal opportunities found on Okinawa. For more information, check out the new workshop called Understanding Spouse Employment at A&FRC on Tuesday, 24 September from 9 am to 11 am. Learn about employment, education and volunteer opportunities at Kadena Air Base, develop an understanding of different base agencies, and discover the specifics of where to apply for employment. Establish your goals for employment, education, and volunteering! There will also be a Career, Education, and Volunteer Fair on Friday, 18 October, from 10 am to 2 pm at the Officers’ Club where you can learn more about the opportunities available on base!

Get the Interview

• Tailor your resume to the job posting, look closely at the qualifications, and show how you meet or exceed them. • Ensure all required paperwork is submitted! If you are unsure about what might be missing contact the Civilian Personnel Office or NAF HR office. • Don’t be shy about applying to multiple places and remember new jobs are posted often. • Look closely at your resume to be certain it is free of errors and updated.

Nail the Interview • Research the opportunity and be prepared to discuss how your experience meets or exceeds the needs of the position. • Practice! Have a friend look up some common interview questions and practice answering them. • Be on time and dressed professionally to make a good impression. • Close your interview with job specific and company related questions that show interest and ambition.

Saturday • 21 September 10 am - 11 am At Okuma Beach In honor of International Coastal Cleanup Day, Okuma wants to help beautify the beaches! Stop by the patio outside Surfside Grill & Bar to get trash bags and gloves, then head to the beaches to get started. Afterwards, enjoy free ice cream for your efforts! Enjoy a weekend filled with fun, camping, and adventure - all while experiencing the satisfaction of knowing you are helping the environment and volunteering your time for a good cause!

FOR OPEN POSITIONS, PLEASE VISIT NAFJOBS.ORG AND USAJOBS.GOV

You might have seen our article on page 20 that talks about all the green initiatives made by Okuma, but they aren’t alone. Bellows AFS is in the middle of a variety of important projects! Their coastal dune restoration is underway to protect the beach from further erosion, as well as stabilize and build the dunes along the coast. In 2019 they have restored an additional 800-1000 linear feet of shoreline! Bellows AFS is also part of an ongoing effort to restore the Pu’ewai wetlands and preserve the habitats used by four endangered waterbirds. After removing the invasive mangrove trees in the area, endangered waterbirds like the Hawaiian stilt can now be seen in the wetlands daily! Another major initiative that Bellows Air Force Station is working towards is water quality improvement. They are looking into a water treatment system with the goal of improving water quality within Waimanalo Stream. Visit Bellows AFS and see the natural beauty of the area in person!

18TH AEROMEDICAL EVACUATION SQUADRON

They’re the people you may need when you’re having a bad day. They’re the people who get you or loved ones off island when you hear the dreaded “we can’t take care of that here.” They’re the 18th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron (AES). “It’s just a good feeling to get them to better care,” SSgt Ken Cummings, Air Evacuation Technician, said. Cummings explained the mission of the squadron as getting patients from point A to point B. To execute that mission, the plane transporting patients off island needs to be a flying, fully operational hospital. “You don’t know what’s going to happen, you don’t have a set come in, I’m going to do this and this and this,” he said. Cummings works in clinic management. His current job is to ensure all the people in the air are qualified and ready to do their job by making sure their medical licenses and other training is up to date. The training and evaluations continue with the work of MSgt Manuel Montalvo, who is in charge of preparing for evaluations. As every squadron knows, readiness is critical, and with readiness comes a lot of hard work. He also stated his appreciation for 18 AES and the work they do to take care of patients every day. He applauds them for getting out there and taking care of people in all sorts of weather. It isn’t a comfortable job, but it is one that is absolutely critical. All the evaluations, certifications, and training makes sure people like Major Wayne Pernell, a flight nurse of 12 years, can be prepared to execute the 18 AES mission. “My favorite part of the job is the autonomy we have when we are flying with patients,” Pernell said. He explained that in the air, there’s only a crew of three to five

people, which means the medical professionals need to be ready for anything to happen. “You never know what’s going to happen up there, so you just put your minds together and make sure the patient gets safely from one location to another,” Pernell said. Every day is different, which makes training crucial. “We practice how to get people out of places really quickly if we need to,” Capt. Christina McMillen, Readiness Flight Commander, said. 18 AES has some pretty impressive tools they use to get ready, such as advanced mannequins that are sophisticated enough to mimic severe medical conditions like heart attacks and strokes. They breathe, they react, they have heart and lung sounds they truly look like they’re alive. The shop has several mannequins they can use to practice unpredictable scenarios. Their most advanced mannequins can blink, react to light, sweat, and can replicate bleeding. They are used to practice advanced medical procedures like defibrillation. On top of high-tech equipment, the squadron also utilizes live actors for drills. They have special rooms set up to mimic the actual triage area they use on the planes, complete with dim lightning and loud engine noise. “We are always developing new techniques and figuring out the best way to do what we do,” McMillen said. She emphasized the need to be able to work with agencies from all branches as well as other countries. Another large part of 18 AES is sending a liaison team ahead to the theater with the most conflict. Their job there is to help the troops on the ground learn how to properly load patients in the air evacuation system to ensure service members in grave medical danger can get help. The

team takes a tent, communications gear, satellite phones, and anything you may need in a real-life situation.

SINCE WE ARE TAKING CARE OF FAMILY MEMBERS, THEY ARE ABLE TO TAKE CARE OF THE MISSION AND THEY KNOW THEY’RE IN GOOD HANDS WITH US

During our walk-through of the expansive training area and storage facility, we were shown the actual in-flight kits used in a critical environment. The kit included items like bandages and medications, but 18 AES also has advanced tools to deliver a baby mid-flight, stabilize patients who have heart attacks or strokes, and the equipment to shock a patient back to life if needed. The importance of their job was obvious, and Pernell said he hopes they’re providing the support needed on Kadena and to the surrounding area. “Since we are taking care of family members, they are able to take care of the mission and they know they’re in good hands with us,” Pernell said. Recently 18 AES has been working on an exercise to move patients from the Korean Peninsula to mainland Japan. McMillen said this involves working with other nations to ensure PACAF is ready in case of war. Pernell has also completed training recently to handle extensive trauma care in a hospital setting, as well as the tactical combat casualty course - how to get care to under fire. Their mission is critical to the livelihood of the service members and families stationed on Okinawa.

HONOR & A Conversation with the Kadena Honor Guard The Kadena Honor Guard makes an instant impression wherever you see them. Whether they are supporting the Veteran’s Parade, Air Force Ball, or a change of command, they bring an extra level of elegance and dignity to any event. Some of the things that the Honor Guard does to support events is presenting and honoring the colors. Kadena is a bit special when it comes to presenting the colors as we make sure to honor the Japanese flag, in respect to our host nation. The flags are brought in at the start of the event and presented to the audience as the national anthems play. TSgt Anthony Terry spoke a bit about what makes Kadena’s Honor Guard so special. While stateside Honor Guard teams are considered a full time job, on Kadena, they volunteer their time in addition to completing a full work day outside of the Honor Guard team. Their dedication and resolve really shines in the work duties they do. Those interested in joining the Honor Guard experience an intensive 3-day training flight that takes up a full duty day. Throughout the day they go over various rifle and flag movements, funeral protocol, and the entire Honor Guard manual. At the end of training there is a question and answer portion where the potential new guardsmen are tested to see if they retain their new skills when under pressure. One of the trainers, SSgt Calvin Ussery, is in charge of making sure the guardsmen going out on details are prepared for whatever they are called on to do. He emphasized that although the Honor Guard looks hard and he hears people say they can’t do it, remember that everyone starts at square one. The behaviors are trained and learned over time so make sure to give it a shot if the Honor Guard is something you are interested in. SSgt Ussery joined the team initially as a way to improve his military bearing. Prior to joining the team, he said he was a bit rough around the edges and that seeing the changes one of his friends made after joining the team inspired him to give it a shot. SrA Aurora Ortiz mentioned, although training is intensive, the skills you learn make you feel more confident in your capabilities. Ortiz also spoke about how inspired she was by the US Air Force Honor Guard, although she couldn’t join the stateside team because of height requirements. Luckily she can take part on Kadena! She mentioned how much she enjoys practices because they get to be a little more relaxed and make fun of their mistakes. In talking to members of the team, it was evident the Honor Guard is a tight-knit unit who values the impact the service they provide has on others. If you are interested in joining the Honor Guard, T-Flight happens quarterly and contact information is available on Sharepoint.

REMEMBER A Conversation with the Base Historian As someone who was never much of a history buff in school, I didn’t check out any of the historical sites on Okinawa when I arrived. Prior to my meeting with the base historian, Evan Muxen, I knew that the Battle of Okinawa had occurred at some point in World War II, but was pretty unsure of the details. I cannot overstate how fascinating I found the experience of learning more about how history has shaped the island of Okinawa. I encourage those who have hesitated to take one of the “Battle of Okinawa” tours from ITT or haven’t visited the historical sites you can see right on Kadena to seek out those experiences! While history in general was not fascinating to me as a teen, getting to know the history of place I live in as an adult has afforded me a new understanding of the unique social and cultural climate that exists on Okinawa. For instance, I had no idea the air field of Kadena Air Base (once referred to as “Naka” or “middle”) existed well before any U.S. military force landed on Okinawa’s shore. U.S. forces were prepared for a 3- to 7-day fight for “Naka” but when the Battle of Okinawa began, Japanese forces immediately pulled back to the southern part of the island. They did so because the southern side of Okinawa is very hilly and easier to defend. The Japanese forces used a tactic called “reverse slope defense” where they defended with highangle trajectory and stayed on the opposite side of the hill they were defending. This meant that U.S. forces could not see how many people they were up against. The three main ridges are also connected by a cave system that meant Japanese forces could switch between areas and defend each place as needed. The final aspect that made the area so defensible was that each ridge was in range of the other two. So, if U.S. forces attacked one, they still had to deal with fire from the rest of the ridges. The Battle of Okinawa took place from April to June in 1945. It was the largest amphibious landing in the Pacific theater during World War II and was absolutely deadly. Many Okinawans (estimates vary widely, but almost 1/3 of the population) died in defense of their island alongside Japanese forces and Allied forces. In July 1945, Lt Gen Doolittle raised the flag on what is now Kadena Air Base at what was once the USO amphitheater, roughly near where the 10th tee of Banyan Tree Golf Course is now. He claimed it with minimal personnel, limited equipment, and tents as the only habitation.

There is a heritage hall on Kadena located at the airfield near gate one called the Quonset Hut. The inside of the hall is dedicated to the history of Kadena Air Base through the years. There are images of the progression of the base and it’s expansion across the years. There were a variety of intriguing objects. As a space enthusiast, I was very excited to see a flag that was flown on one of the space shuttles. I was also surprised to hear that the Quonset Hut is the same building type as what families who lived on Kadena called home at one point. There is a photo of one of the first families to live on Kadena and the two children on display inside the heritage hall. The young boy being held in the picture below was one of the first babies born to Americans on the island. At the back of the Quonset Hut, there are WWII relics including a cannon and communication equipment. It was truly amazing to be surrounded by so much history. This experience was made more powerful by knowing it is the history of the place I have called home for the past five years. The Quonset Hut, unlike many museums I have been to, allows you to interact very closely with the exhibit. You can get a close look at the details of everything. I thoroughly enjoyed learning more about the history of Kadena, and I encourage you to get out and explore some of the many unique sights located all across Okinawa!
