Note

Welcome to Venture Magazine and happy September! I want to take just a moment to introduce myself, because this is my first issue of Venture Magazine! A few things about me, I have a journalism degree from the University of Arkansas, and northwest Arkansas is home. I have two little rescue pups that are my whole world, and I love a great cup of coffee on a patio. I am the current creative writer, and an account executive here in the marketing office, and I am ecstatic to share this issue with you. Can you believe it is already September? While the promise of cooler weather is right in front of us, if you want to check out some end of summer fun, take a look at pg. 22 to see what ITT has going on around our beautiful island. Also, take a look at pg. 26 to see what trips Outdoor Rec has planned soon. However, if staying indoors is preferable, you have to head over to pg. 10-11 to read all about the Library’s renovation! It has been refreshed and updated, and it will remind you of your favorite bookstore back home, guaranteed. While there is so many exciting things happening this month - I know what you really want to hear about - DOMO DAYS! It is one of our favorite activities to put on, and you can read all about the fantastic giveaways and freebies on pg. 31-35. If you are new to the island, I promise you will not want to miss out on this full week of fun as FSS says “Domo arigato gozaimasu” or “thank you” to all the members of Team Kadena who patronize our facilities. If you want to get a sneak peek of all the yummy specials from FSS dining facilities this month, flip to pg. 42 and check out the food spread! You will see pictures and locations of several items for you and your family. The pandemic has definitely made me miss events like going to the movies, but Schilling is starting a brand-new event called Film Fridays! Check out pg. 13 for the lineup of movies for this socially distant, outdoor film event. Also, the Airman & Family Readiness Center is hosting a career fair this month. If you are looking for information for career and volunteer opportunities, make sure you read pg. 17. This month’s Venture Magazine truly has something for everyone, and we are so excited to share it with you! Happy reading!

Celebrate Life OBON 2 - 4 September

1 2 3

Obon, a Japanese Buddhist holiday, is celebrated in different ways across Japan. In Okinawa, altars are prepared with regional treats and Eisa drummers play in the streets during the holiday. Unke, the first day, is also known as Welcoming Day. Families prepare altars (butsudans) with offerings of rice cooked in broth with meat and veggies (juushii), fruits, sake, and sugarcane, and lanterns are set up to guide spirits home. On Nakanuhi, the second day, families leave doors and windows open and visit relatives’ homes to pay respects and give gifts (ochuugen). The third day, Uukui, is also known as Farewell Day as families send off spirits back to Heaven by preparing dinner boxes (juubako) and burning spiritual money (uchikabi). You will also find many Eisa drummers throughout the streets and alleys from sunset until dawn.

Obon and Dia de Muertos

Obon and Dia de Muertos are two cultural holidays dedicated to honoring deceased family members and ancestors. During these holidays, families gather together, feast and pray to celebrate the return of ancestral spirits.

DIA DE MUERTOS 1 - 2 November During Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead), families create altars (ofrendas) for deceased family members filled with offerings of favorite foods, sugar skulls (calaveras), marigolds and photos to encourage the spirits to visit. Dia de Angelitos, Children’s Day, begins at midnight on 1 November. On this day, the spirits of deceased children are believed to be reunited with their families. Dia de Muertos, (Dia de Difuntos or All Souls’ Day) starts at midnight on 2 November. Grand city-wide celebrations honor the lives of departed adults.

Kadena Base Library is transforming!

L

ibrary staff have been hard at work to create a space with a welcoming and inviting atmosphere. While you may not want to judge a book by its cover, presentation matters, and an open, well-lit space with comfortable new furnishings provides a “third space” for library users. It gives them a place other than home and work where they can hang out, find free resources and relax. Of equal importance to appearance is making the library’s collection easier to access by improving the browsing experience for users. While the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) system makes sense to library staff and patrons who are frequent library users, the DDC call numbers are unhelpful to patrons who are new users or who are returning to the library after many years. An important question that kept popping up during this project was, “how would a patron look for this item?” The way that online retailers (like Amazon.com) create user-focused searches have changed the patterns that library patrons will use while searching for books. Rather than expecting library users to adjust to the oftencounterintuitive way that materials are arranged under DDC, it is important to arrange library resources in a way that is the easiest to browse and search.

10 FOR ADDITIONAL PROGRAMMING PLEASE VISIT KADENAFSS.COM

This means taking our collection and changing the shelving so that it’s easier to view the materials. For example, moving the music CDs to drawers so that library users can flip through the CDs and view the artwork on the cover rather than just reading the information on the side of the CD. In nonfiction, this means moving books on ‘How to learn a foreign language’ next to the section containing travel guides. The children’s picture books have been shelved onto browser style shelving units, so that children can flip through the books just like a person would flip through vinyl record albums in a record store. Picture books, previously arranged alphabetically by author, were also moved into categories to make topics easier to find. For example, if a child wants to read a book about dump trucks they would search through the books in the “transportation” section where they might come across “I Stink!,” a book about a garbage truck that they might not have found

| Building 451

Written by Holly May, Kadena Librarian otherwise. Changing both the shelves and the way in which the books are arranged means that library users have a better chance of finding not only the thing they were searching for, but also finding resources that they didn’t know about or didn’t realize that they need.

T

he work done to the library that is most visible now has been several years in the making. In 2018, Kadena Base Library was short listed to participate in the Air Force Library Program’s Air Force-wide initiative to convert the collection of resources from the DDC system to what is commonly referred to as the modern bookstore layout. This involved analyzing the library’s collection, determining which materials were still relevant, and paring down the materials most needed and most used. The collection went from 79,000 items to just over 50,000 items. Materials with “stale” information such as books with outdated

medical, financial or social commentary were removed, as well as works of fiction that were torn and worn out, so that fresh copies could take their place. In 2019, Kadena Base Library was approved for funding, and planning the new layout began in earnest. In order to create a more contemporary feeling space, a plan was created that included replacing the tall, stationary shelves with short, mobile shelving units. This meant that the layout of the furnishings could be more flexible and functional. The intent of the design is to make the library a warm and welcoming space for now, while keeping the ability to change it up in the future as the needs of the base community evolve. All of the planning and the work preparing the collection meant that in 2020 the library staff were ready when the new furniture and shelving arrived on island. With a crew of hardworking airmen and staff from Logistics, library staff removed 38 library stacks and replaced them with more than 80 mobile units. The result was a bright, refreshed space. Plans for new carpet and paint are in place and the installation of an outdoor book return that will allow patrons to return library materials without leaving their vehicle is being planned. More good things are just around the corner and the end goal is to provide a better more inviting experience for everyone!

Tip of the Month: Replace Cabin Air Filter

Douglas Blvd

Olympic Mall

It may not improve your car’s overall performance, but if you’ve got a family member who is allergic to dust and other airborne particles, you might want to replace the cabin air filter in your car. This is one of the easiest and most practical ways to keep everyone safe and comfy inside your car. The cabin filter is normally overlooked as a normal routine replacement item so we see a lot of vehicles with filters that are old and full of debris. This causes lack of air flow from the vents as well as bad odors.

A DAY IN THE LIFE... Team Kadena Current Operations | Future Operations

Protect the Force

Written by: Meagan Abell

2020 has undoubtedly been a year with unprecedented change. The Pandemic, social distancing, face masks, restriction of movement, and many other phrases have substantially impacted our everyday lives during COVID-19. Fortunately for Team Kadena, while COVID-19 was in its early stages, it was clear that there was a desperate need for a centralized team to handle the global pandemic’s dayto-day challenges. Current Operations, more commonly referred to as CUOPS, is a team of about 25 men and women from different squadrons across Kadena Air Base. Together, this team makes the important and difficult decisions that focus on one thing: keeping Team Kadena safe.

Our number one priority is protect the force. MSgt Joel Eason, 18th Operations Group CUOPS Representative, said there is a regimented daily schedule to include, “tracking all the protective equipment for the squadrons, keeping track of the restriction of movement for every single squadron. Tracking inbound and outbound PCS, leave, TDY.” Eason also stated that the CUOPS team tracks testing for all branches related to Kadena operations, and answer questions about current directives. One of the tasks performed by CUOPS that directly affects Team Kadena is the development and execution of Command Staff Directives, or CSD’s. These are the policies that evolve as the pandemic has escalated, de-escalated, and escalated again. CSD’s affect where members of Kadena Air Base can patronize, whether on or off base, as well as help squadrons execute telework guidelines. The work CUOPS does to develop CSD’s comes from a collaboration with another specialized team, Future Operations, or FUOPS. “Future

18th Operations Group CUOPS | FUOPS operations was developed during COVID-19 because it was recognized there was a need for a planning entity,” said Major Baja Church, Future Operations Director. FUOPS operates with a 7-person team, identified and assembled for their expertise in the subjects at hand. This team is assigned to FUOPS exclusively for the duration of the pandemic. “FUOPS is not making decisions quickly. We have a calculated process that is not opinionbased, it is public health-based, and founded in research,” Church said. Church also explained that FUOPS coordinates directly with the Public Health Emergency Officer, the 18th Medical Group, and joint forces leadership. They also take into account how the pandemic is affecting both the military side, as well as the Okinawa community. “Our number one priority is protect the force,” Church stated.

Our goal is t0 get everyone back to the same quality of life they had before. “Our goal is to get everyone back to the same quality of life they had before,” stated SMSgt Christopher Fowler, who serves as the FUOPS Superintendent. CUOPS Exec member, 1st Lieutenant Lauren Rogers, also added, “COVID-19 is the new normal, but we are trying our best to find the best way forward.” For more information about current policies regarding COVID-19 that are being implemented for Kadena Air Base, please reference kadena.af.mil/coronavirus, or if you would like the most up to date information about FSS facilities please reference kadenafss.com/covid/
