AUTUMN 2015 KÄHLER DESIGN
Autumn 2015
NEWS FROM KÄHLER We are thrilled to welcome Kähler’s 2015 autumn collection! This autumn, we will present a collection that in keeping with Kähler’s deeply-rooted values has strong ties to Kähler’s 176 year history, craftsman traditions and ambition to surprise with innovative art. Kähler’s unique and fascinating history is embedded in the Hammershøi range, where the new vases are inspired by one of Kähler’s old vases from the beginning of the 20th century. Created by world-renowned artist Svend Hammershøi at Kähler’s old workshop, the vase lives on in the Hammershøi range, designed by Hans-Christian Bauer. In this collection, Kähler continues to interpret its artistic ceramics heritage and develops unique and innovative design with deep respect for the craft. The brand new Unico range designed by Anders Arhøj gives the glaze centre stage and plays with our perception of art versus useful objects. Every single product in the range is unique with variations in colour, shape and idiom, thus emphasising Kähler’s tradition for personal, inspiring and unique ceramics. For 176 years, Kähler has been part of the Scandinavian festive seasons, and in this collection, Kähler can even present a range of new and stunning Christmas decorations clearly inspired by the deep spruce forests in Scandinavia, the hues of winter and the warmth of the season.
We hope that you will find inspiration in our new collection! The warmest greetings from all of us at Kähler

HAMMERSHØI DESIGN HANS-CHRISTIAN BAUER
The characteristic Hammershøi furrows have already found a place in the homes of countless design enthusiasts throughout Scandinavia. Now those historic furrows move from the dinner table and out into the entire house. Kähler is launching four new vases, the idiom of which is both timeless and modern. The four design vases have been created with a precise, stringent and simple idiom giving them a stylish modern look. In the same collection, Kähler and Hans-Christian Bauer, the designer of the Hammershøi range, have created four elegantly atmospheric candle holders, all of which have an unpretentious, individual and stylish look in subdued, Nordic colours. Kähler’s new design vases have a totally unique history, which adds even more authenticity and personality to the entire Hammershøi collection. They were directly inspired by the distinctive vases of the world-renowned artist Svend Hammershøi. He created them at the old Kähler workshop on Kählersbakken in Næstved back in the early 19th century.

Historical design
HAMMERSHØI BRINGS TOGETHER KÄHLER IN THE PAST AND PRESENT Svend Hammershøi was a world-renowned artist who worked for Kähler’s workshop from the late 19th century. His works for Kähler won fame far beyond the borders of Denmark and can still be seen at museums around the world. Hammershøi was particularly known for his large, bulky vases with distinct furrows and beautiful profiles, which he liked to cut by hand. Hammershøi was of unique importance to Kähler. He was the artist attached to Kähler’s workshop for the longest time and his works were produced in the greatest number reaching out to the whole world. Again today, Kähler’s ceramics come with Hammershøi’s hand-carved profiles. The new Hammershøi range by outstanding designer Hans-Christian Bauer is based on Hammershøi’s characteristic red clay vases and reinterprets the deep carvings, which on the ceramics appear as discrete and elegant furrows. In this way, Hans-Christian Bauer brings together Kähler’s past and present and has created a range so timeless and elegant that it can be used for a lifetime. The Nordic lightness and elegance characterising the Hammershøi tableware are complemented by Nordic materials such as the bulky oak and the fragile glass. The meeting between materials gives the historical Hammershøi tableware an edge and adds interesting details to the ceramic elements. The Hammershøi range comes with decorative furrows, giving it a classic look and letting the glaze flow elegantly and slightly transparently across the vivid idioms of the ceramics.

UNICO DESIGN ANDERS ARHØJ
Unico is a range of entirely unique, ceramic design products, which playfully and invitingly challenge our common perception of art versus utilitarian objects. The hallmark of the new Unico range is a dense, colourful glaze. Its simple decorative effect creates an exciting contrast with the light ceramic. The glaze spreads naturally, densely and randomly over the ceramic, culminating like a heavy drop, suspended in time with a beautiful, three-dimensional depth. All elements in the range have their own personality, adding colourful character to any room they decorate. Turn this unique, decorative Unico range into your home’s very own little art collection, a testament to proud traditions of craftsmanship and a clear, confident style.

A tribute to history and craftsmanship
HANDMADE QUALITY AND UNIQUE DETAILS Every single piece of contemporary Kähler design is a tribute to Kähler’s unique history and a celebration of the well-preserved craftsmanship, but also a strong impression of the present. The ceramic designs are still handmade as when Kähler embarked on its adventure in 1839. Just like the women painters decorated the ceramics by hand with cow’s horns at the old Kählersbakken more than one hundred years ago, every single graceful glaze and colour are still meticulously made by adhering to Kähler’s ceramic craftsmanship traditions. Even in this day of age, the Omaggio vase is still being hand painted by gentle brush strokes, after which it is glazed, quality-checked and fine-polished to become a beautiful useful piece in the end, while keeping that little detail that makes every single piece of Kähler design unique. When buying Kähler’s design, you thus take home a piece of handmade cultural heritage with a personal look and historical details.

Stripes for Christmas
CLASSIC CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS AND HISTORIC DESIGN Omaggio with silver and gold stripes is not just for Christmas – the new design products in the Omaggio series continue Kähler’s 176 year old traditions in both design and expression and connect Kähler’s historic ceramics with the latest collections. At the beginning of the 1900s, Kähler’s workshop became famous for its revolutionary lustre paint, a glaze with a metallic and shiny look, which surprised and impressed on the ceramic art scene in Europe. Omaggio with silver and gold stripes is inspired by this particular glazing technique from Kähler’s workshop on Kählersbakken in Næstved, and many of the same craft techniques are still used today, just like over 100 years ago. This unique metallic paint is still being painted by hand with neat strokes on the snow-white ceramics, and every piece of Omaggio ceramics is thus both a tribute to Kähler’s unique history and a celebration of the well-preserved craft.

URBANIA DESIGN METTE BACHE AND BARBARA BENDIX BECKER
A number of small, new residents will be moving into the popular town of Urbania this autumn. Kähler is introducing three new miniature Urbania houses. Each of the three houses has its individual idiom: a classic house; a functionalist-style house with an almost pixelated look and a house inspired by the world-famous Bauhaus architecture. The houses can stand alone or in small clusters, so the golden rays of light glimmer and dance in the snow-white ceramic. The town of Urbania will also welcome some newcomers from the big city with the addition of two elegant houses with the characteristic white, glistening glaze. The two new houses are inspired by the creative, vibrant atmosphere of big cities, where life is always going on behind the luminous windows.

NOBILI DESIGN METTE BACHE AND BARBARA BENDIX BECKER
The Nobili range reinterprets classic Christmas decoration and is rooted in recognisable Scandinavian Christmas traditions, giving the design enthusiast some exclusive and modern Christmas decorations. The beautiful tealight candle holders clearly draw their inspiration from Scandinavia’s deep, green pine forests and are created in a simple, stylish cone shape. In the same range Kähler is happy to introduce an entirely new product category: a beautifully new, modern version of the classic decoration bauble. The idiom is simple and the glaze is in subdued colours, so the baubles make a beautiful decoration on a branch throughout December, before being carefully moved over to the Christmas tree as Christmas Eve approaches.

The result is budding new ceramics, appealing to a broad audience in a timeless idiom, but individually interpreted.
