1.0 Three relationships

1.1 Point, Line and Plane Point, Line and plane are the fundamental elements for creating any kind of design. Architectural design is three dimensional and any shape is created from a point, which becomes a line, then a plane, and then becomes three dimensional volume. These three simple elements can always have different ways to create interesting design for us.

Precedent images: Figure 1 is Nanjing Sifang art museum, this museum is formed by paralleled perspective spaces. Point, Line and plane are simply represented on the museum but they are nicely inter-connected to each. Figure 2 is a photograph i took, When I first time see the pole, I found it just simplified the definition of Point, Line and Plane. The pole can be a point if we look from the top, and it can also be a line if we look from the front. When we line many poles together, it becomes a plane. It is pretty interesting, because a pole explained the concept of point, line and plan for me. Figure 3 is the interior of Royal exhibition building. This inspired me about guide circulation and block sight.

The plan is inspired by my idea of crescent moon. By lining these columns up, three crescent moons has been created and it also created some internal space. These columns with trasitional heights can easily guild visitors to find the entry of internal space and they can block people’s vision, and then it created half hidden space.

1.2 Mass

Underground Design The concept i explored for mass are space and voild, the light effect and three dimensional shapes. Make a design through the solid ground with spaces carved out of it unlimited our design. It is different to make a design on/above ground, because any shape is possible to carve out. However, light is the only factor which will affect our design.

Geometric shapes Light vs. Shadow space vs. void

It is really diffcult to undersatnd how light effect will appear underground if i did not facsimile my precendent research images. These precedents helped me on understanding light effect underground and space as well.

Architectural elements in Mass design will affect the aesthetics of the design, thus i decided to eraze all architectural elements for my mass design. Gaston Bachelard said ‘When it comes to excavated ground, dreams have no limit’, thus nothing should limit mass design.

Final Model narrative: Due to climate change, humans are not able to live above ground any longer,so they have to migrate to undergound. A future house has four quarter sphere houses and one sphere which looks like holding by devil’s hand. These five houses have different prices because of light resouces. More light worths higher price. Let us start to imagine our future living environment if we do not stop damaging our environment.

1.3 Frame and infill

Explored ideas: Permanent & Temporary Transparent vs. non-transparent superstructure & anti-gravity Geometric vs. Irregular Cubic vs. Trangular vs circular

Ideas I used: Both permanent and temporary can be indicated in a single material. Block people’s sight (transparency) Irregular shapes Anti-gravity

The idea of my final design was took from the building of Melbourne theatre in Southbank. The inspiration I’ve got from the building is that the position of frame and infill can be changed if we take different perspectives. Those white pipes can be both frame and infill and those inside black pipes can be both frame and infill as well. Therefore i took that idea for my final frame and infill design. It is about playing with different positions and then create different experiences to people when they standing on different points. Figure 6. Themes: Point, Line and Plane Creating Space Guiding circulation Block sight/vision by plane

Themes: Mass Light Experience-Peaceful, ke 3 dimensional shape

Themes: Frame and Infill Transparency Both permanent and temporary within a single material. Experience

The way that I think and design is through sketching and image from precedent research. The series of iteration documented the way my concepts from the inception to my final design. Those sketches helped me to explore my concepts and this process also helped me to understand the inter-relationship between those three systems.

The conceptacle model arranged some themes from three zones, point line and plane, mass and frame and infill. After formal arrangement, there are three key themes interrelate each other in three zones, circulation and creating space, three dimensional spatial and transparency. I chose three kind of materials to represent each zone and ideas behind it. Columns with different heights can guide circulation for people and they create space as well. The arrangement of these columns can be simplified to a kind of language like ‘S’ and it can be transferred to infinite arrangements of those columns. The idea I took from Mass is anti-gravity and irregular three dimensional shapes. And then I chose the idea of ‘bubble’ to represent those two ideas. However, I transferred those bubbles from underground to above ground with the frame and infill system.

The idea I chose from Frame and infill is about transparency and experiences on different positions.

This pavilion is made by the ICD/ITKE. It was inspired by the diving bell spider: it builds a tiny oxygen tank underwater with its silk and then it lives its entire life underwater. The inspirations from nature can always shock me and make me feel incredible. Actually, I took the idea from the diving bell spider not from the pavilion. The silk on the spider’s bubble is the frame system. Instead of transparent wires, I prefer to use black wire to achieve the idea of transparency. The transparent membrane can have light reflection on it and it is a kind of blurring people’s view. Thus it is a very good way to achieve the idea of blocking vision.

4.0 Final Design

A place for keeping secret Final pavilion design:

‘?’

4.1 Final pavilion design: Plan and Section

Section: The pavilion is located on the middle and right side of my chosen site. Two underground secret places are there. Columns guide people to find the entry of secret place. Two semispherical domes are the main structures for above ground. Reflective transparent membrane with black wires inside are distoring people’s vision, thus they cannot see thrugh the pavilion if they do not stand really close to it. Crescent moon sculpture provided a secret place for children and they can leave thier secrets there.

Secret 2

My final model is based on the concept of blurring of vision and guiding circulations. The The combination of columns, reflective membrane and black wires is the way to blur people’s vision from seeing through the pavilion and then make a sense of curiousness. By further combining this idea with the natural environment that surrounding my site, the ultimate blurring of vision will be created. People will only observe the pavilion from six specific points and then they walk closer to the pavilion, they will get incredible experiences. Patient visitors who follow those columns will be guided to find the entrances of secret underground place.

5.0 Reflection

To be honest, I really enjoyed this subject. This studio design subject guided us the formal way of creating our design. Before we start our design, we get the brief of the design and go to the lecture to learn the concepts behind three main themes and then start to do precedence research. I think designer can only create good design when he understands the concepts. After we created our design, the tutor gives us objective feedback and then we can start a further development. Under the procedure, a good design will be made. Before I study this subject, I just simply knew about on/above/underground systems. But there was no concepts of any of them in my mind. Nowadays, I learnt definitions and concepts behind those three systems which is really important for my design in the future. Furthermore, the final secret design was incredible and amazing. Because the combination of concepts in three systems challenged my understanding of those three systems again. By the way, I think I tried my best on this project. Imagine what if we have one group design task, will that be good?
