Kalamazoo Public Library celebrates its 140th anniversary with an appearance by literary journalist Susan Orlean. Her best-selling book, The Orchid Thief, was made into the Oscar-winning movie, Adaptation, starring Meryl Streep. Her latest work, Rin Tin Tin: The Life and the Legend, tells the story of Rin Tin Tin’s improbable journey from puppy orphaned on a 1918 battlefield to movie star and international icon. Orlean became a staff writer for The New Yorker in 1992. She wrote dozens of “Talk of the Town” pieces, “Profiles” and “Reporter at Large” articles, plus a series of American popular culture columns called “Popular Chronicles.” Prior to joining The New Yorker, Orlean served as a contributing editor at Rolling Stone and Vogue. Esquire, New York Times Magazine, Smithsonian, and numerous others have published her articles. A University of Michigan graduate, she also teaches creative writing at NYU. Hear Orlean talk about Rin Tin Tin, her career, and answer questions about any of her books. Plus, meet one of Kalamazoo County’s K-9 teams, on hand to honor Orlean!
