RSVP 553-7886 by May 28, with number of adults and children planning to attend. Ready to Read, KPL’s early childhood literacy initiative, invites Kalamazoo County preschoolers, their parents, teachers, and child care providers to Bronson Park to hear stories read by community leaders and costumed story book characters. Since 1998, Ready to Read has celebrated national Stand for Children Day with a special story hour to focus community attention on the importance of sharing books with young children. Ready to Read encourages parents to read aloud to their children, beginning at birth, through several program components. Rx Reading partners prescribe reading and give away storybooks. Volunteer readers read aloud and model book sharing in clinic waiting rooms, shelters, and Head Start classrooms. The Kalamazoo Literacy Council provides personal tutoring for parents that need help with reading. Kalamazoo Public Library leads Ready to Read in collaboration with more than two dozen community partners. Learn more at www.kpl.gov/r2r.

volunteer spotlight Bernie Baisch loves the Friends Bookstore. A special education teacher, Bernie discovered the store when she was searching for books for her classroom. She was overwhelmed by what she found and bought a large assortment of materials at amazingly cheap prices. She then joined the Friends and began volunteering at the store! Bernie includes her personal reading needs when shopping at the Friends Bookstore. She describes herself as a passionate reader who’s never without a book. She enjoys exchanging book ideas with store customers almost as much as buying books. Everyone in Bernie’s life knows she’ll take their gently-used books to the Friends Bookstore. The store’s success counts on donations like these from generous readers. You can help by following Bernie’s example by bringing your used books, movies, and music to the Friends. Your donations to the Friends help the library offer summer reading games, library staff scholarships, and special uses. director’s

strategic planning In the spring issue of the Library Link, I described the library’s strategic planning initiative to reimagine, reinvent, and reallocate library resources to become more user centered. In the first stage of the process, a group of community leaders met to envision Kalamazoo in ten years. They then selected from a list of possible service responses those that best utilize KPL’s strengths to meet current and future community needs. Library staff, managers, and trustees responded to their recommendations, adding their insight and perspective. Following are the goals that emerged from that process. • Children (birth-5) will have programs, services, and materials to prepare them to enter school ready to learn. • Parents/caregivers will have the tools and skills needed to prepare children (birth-5) to learn when they enter school. • Children (6-11) will have materials and services that stimulate their imaginations and provide pleasurable reading, viewing, and listening experiences. • Tweens and teens (12-18) will have a supportive environment that provides pleasurable reading, viewing, and listening experiences that respond to their current interests. 8

1112 Gayle Ave, 49048 553-7810 • Adults will enjoy a wide variety of new and popular reading, viewing, and listening materials and services that respond to current interests. • Everyone in Kalamazoo will have free high-speed access to the online world in the library. • Nonprofit organizations will have tools to build capacity and achieve excellence provided by a securely funded ONEplace. • Everyone will have resources to understand local history and traditions and to connect past with present through family histories. We’ve begun to implement these goals using library consultant Sandra Nelson’s book, Implementing for Results. KPL staff members have identified current and potential library services to support these goals and set targets to meet the goals in materials borrowing, program attendance, and user satisfaction. Next, we’ll consider the viability of current activities that don’t support the selected goals. Learn more about the process on our website, www.kpl.gov/strategic-planning.

June 22, 11 am & 2 pm, Central Commedia Zuppa’s BOXHEAD uses face and body masks, rod puppets, and physical movement to create a unique and imaginative world. In the tradition of Where the Wild Things Are and The Phantom Tollbooth, BOXHEAD shows what happens when you get so angry that you lose your head! Try on masks from around the world at the petting zoo. All ages, family.
