summer fun @ your library Make a splash at Kalamazoo Public Library this summer! Teachers know that students’ reading skills suffer if they don’t read over the summer. Your library can help by making reading fun for the whole family. Sign up for summer reading beginning Tuesday, June 15. The kids’ game, Make a Splash—READ!, tween game, Make Waves, and teen game, Whitewater Challenge, all encourage reading through prizes, gift books, or raffle drawings throughout the summer. Even preschoolers get a sticker each time they report books read to them by family members or friends. Grown-ups can join the summer reading fun, too! They can read, listen to music, or watch a movie to fill in the blanks on their Water Your Mind gameboard.

celebrate stand for children day June 2, 10-11 am, Bronson Park

Enjoy a book in Michigan’s great outdoors! Many state parks, including Fort Custer and Van Buren, will loan a hammock to participants. What’s more relaxing than a day at the beach, reading?

RSVP 553-7886 by May 28, with number of adults and children planning to attend. Ready to Read, KPL’s early childhood literacy initiative, invites Kalamazoo County preschoolers, their parents, teachers, and child care providers to Bronson Park to hear stories read by community leaders and costumed story book characters. Since 1998, Ready to Read has celebrated national Stand for Children Day with a special story hour to focus community attention on the importance of sharing books with young children. Ready to Read encourages parents to read aloud to their children, beginning at birth, through several program components. Rx Reading partners prescribe reading and give away storybooks. Volunteer readers read aloud and model book sharing in clinic waiting rooms, shelters, and Head Start classrooms. The Kalamazoo Literacy Council provides personal tutoring for parents that need help with reading. Kalamazoo Public Library leads Ready to Read in collaboration with more than two dozen community partners. Learn more at www.kpl.gov/r2r.
