EDITOR’S NOTE

The high turn out and exhibitor participation rate in last month’s boat shows in Dubai and

Abu Dhabi negated the growing popular belief that the region’s marine industry was not spared in the ongoing global economic meltdown. A host of factors contribute to the industry’s resilience. One, most players catering to the high-end market do not mass produce; they build upon placement of orders and when initial payments have been made; they don’t have stock that depreciates and idles at the shipyard; thus, they have a sound return on investment. Two, the boating industry is focused on people with money to spend—not those living on credit cards. Three—and more importantly—the region’s boatmakers are reaping gains from Europe’s losses as far as the financial crisis is concerned. As Sultan A. Al Shaali, chief executive officer, AS Marine, put it, people who could not afford European boats are now looking to the Middle East to buy where they’re cheaper but of the same quality. All said, this year’s 17th Dubai International Boat Show held at the Dubai International Marine Club – Mina Seyahi from Mar. 3 to 7; and the inaugural Abu Dhabi Boat Show held, Mar. 12 to 14 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center, point to a promising future for the region’s boating industry.

Emocean

teams up with Italy’s Gruppo InRizzardi Emocean Marine, a boat-building company launched during last month’s Abu Dhabi Yacht Show, has signed a strategic partnership with the prestigious Italian marine company, Gruppo InRizzardi. In a press conference held during the boat show event at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center on Mar. 14, Ali Al Naqbi, Emocean chairman, said the partnership will “enable us to provide an even greater range of world quality boats and yachts for discerning Middle Eastern boaters.”

For his part, Conrrado Rizzardi, chief executive officer of Gruppo InRizzardi, and son of the company’s president, Gian Franco Rizzardi, said the partnership signals the “start of a very fruitful and interesting partnership.” “We are very pleased to be involved in this partnership with Emoceann, as the significant growth in the number and popularity of waterfront projects in the region is likely to result in an increase in interest in the boating and yachting industry,” he said. The partnership will enable the companies to cover all aspects of the marine leisure and boating

industry. Gruppo InRizzardi is the prestigious Italian umbrella group for six marine companies, some of which are considered legends in their own right—Rizzardi, Posillipo, Italcraft, Diano, Santa Yachts and Parisi— and was one of the first to embrace the fashion of “regrouping,” which has allowed it to build its formidable reputation pver the years. The marine and yachting industry in the Middle East is one of the fastest growing in the world and is proving to be resilient in the face of the economic downturn being experienced around the world.

WHAT’S NEW Ewa Stachurska, public relations officer, Sunreef Yachts

Sunreef Yachts finds Middle East market ‘very seductive’ With the number of custom-made boats it has built having steadily gone up over the past two years, and looking to yet another increase in production next year, Dubai Gdansk-based Sunreef Yachts has set its sights on the Middle East, a market it finds “very seductive.” “We want to develop really here in the region,” Ewa Stachurska, Sunreef Yachts public relations officer, told Arabian Yachts. “We think there is quite a potential for the region with all locals interested more in powerboats and expats interested in sailing boats. Charter facilities, there are still not many charter boats here. It’s a very seductive region here in the Middle East. We are very optimistic and excited,” she said. In January this year, Sunreef Yachts delivered an order for a yacht to Pearl Island in Qatar— the transaction was closed during last year’s Dubai International Boat Show, according to Stachurska. Sunreef Yachts was among exhibitors in this year’s Dubai International Boat Show. Having appointed Qatar’s Ronautica Middle East as its exclusive dealer for that country, as well as for Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Oman following the deal, Stachurska said Sunreef Yachts will be participating in this year’s Saudi International Boat Show scheduled for Oct. 28 to 31 at Al Furusya Marine & Yacht Club in Jeddah apparently as part of efforts to maintain its presence in the region and continue tapping into its market. According to Stachurska, Sunreef Yachts launched 12 custom-made boats last year; 18 will be built this year; and 20 more next year. The global financial crisis has not taken a bite on the shipbuilder’s resources, said Stachurska, explaining, “anywhere in the world, Sunreef is in a very strong position because we are in the niche market.” Moreover, she said, “We don’t have stock. We don’t have boats that wait to be sold.We do boats only on request. If someone requests and do pays, then we start.” Sunreef Yachts builds catamarans, powerboats, sailboats, and superyachts.

Nautical Lines to open offices in Qatar, Kuwait, India Nautical Lines Regional Marine LLC will open offices in Qatar, Kuwait and India to complement its operations in these countries, Krishna Kumar, Nautical Lines managing director told Arabian Yachts. At the same time, Kumar said Nautical Lines has also tied up with London-based, yacht interior designer James Park Associates, and will open an office in Dubai next month. He said discussions with JPA started last November. Kumar said Nautical Lines participated in the Mumbai International Boat Show held in March and was able to secure an order for a 65-foot catamaran; he added that Nautical is currently building a 30-meter river cruiser for an Indian buyer. “We have expanded our activities into

upper GCC countries like Qatar and Kuwait. We have also started working on the Indian market,” Kumar said. According to him, Nautical Lines’ office in India was scheduled to open this month; he added that Nautical is looking at opening a showroom in Qatar next month or in June; Kumar said plans were also afoot to open a Kuwait office this year. Meantime, Kumar said Nautical Lines, which participated in this year’s Dubai International Boat Show, received serious inquiries about a yacht interior design project. “We will be starting with these,” Kumar said, adding that Nautical Lines has also received two inquiries from Kuwait, “and we will be doing this project for the time being.” “We expect that there will be a demand for interior design. We look ahead with a lot of hope.”

Saudi International Boat Show Organizers setting up best new marine event in the M. E.

Left to right: Erwin Bamps, executive manager, Gulf Craft Inc.; Donald Starkey, Donald Starkey Design; Mohammed Hussain Al Shaali, chairman, Gulf Craft Inc.; and Lois Hall, Dubai International Boat Show.

Gulf Craft launches four models at 17th Dubai International Boat Show Gulf Craft Inc. launched four new models during this year’s Dubai International Boat Show. The new additions include two new luxury Majesty yachts, the Majesty 63 and the super yacht Majesty 121, as well as the Silver Craft 34 leisure craft and the ground breaking Oryx 54 sport fly-bridge yacht. Erwin Bamps, Gulf Craft executive manager, said Gulf Craft decided to do the launching at the event because it remains “one of the most important events in the global yachting calendar” and continues to be the “ideal platform to launch our new models to the world.” The launch of four new Gulf Craft models at this year’s event is indicative of our long term strategic vision and relentless investments in product and process development, even and especially in

Dubai

today’s economic climate. It is also testament to the ongoing demand “we are experiencing, in particular in the super yacht category where we anticipate a stable demand in the next two years,” Bamps said. The Majesty 121 has been designed to set a new standard for super yacht construction, from the immaculate exterior styling and the no-compromise naval engineering to the exquisite interior workmanship. Built under rigorous class inspection, the Majesty Super Yachts contain an extensive host of amenities and feature the latest high-tech entertainment facilities, to ensure unrivalled ocean-going luxury. Such has been the demand for the Majesty 121 that Gulf Craft has already delivered three Majesty 121 yachts since the model was first announced in 2008. In addition to its Majesty Yacht line up, Gulf Craft will also showcase its

Silver Craft range of sporty, fishing and family boats at this year’s DIBS. Adding to its popular and costeffective Oryx range, Gulf Craft is launching the Oryx 54 Fly at DIBS 2009, the largest fly-bridge version in its already popular sport cruiser range. The creation of its second line-up of yachts dedicated towards a young and trendy customer base is a reflection of the growing emergence of the sporting leisure marine market. With its distinctive orange color marking and its rather aggressive sporty looks, the Oryx Sport Yachts and Cruiser series has already carved itself an enthusiastic following and brand recognition in the GCC market. Gulf Craft Inc, based in the United Arab Emirates, is one of only a handful of shipyards capable of producing vessels of 100-ft and over, with annual production of about 700 vessels up to 150 ft overall length.

optimistic despite the global financial crisis The financial crisis being experienced Qatar globally will slow projects down but not stop them, said John A. Cardona, Island Global Yachting regional director for marketing. “I think the impact that we see is that development just might take longer. But developments are going on. Well, at one point we were thinking that we would have 20,000 berths in the GCC in the next two years or the next five years. “The yacht owners are still there. People still are buying megayachts. There will always be a need for berths for those mega yachts. The demand is still there. It just might take longer,” he told Arabian Yachts in an interview. Meantime, Cardona said the sixmember nation Gulf Cooperation Council—Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates—as well as eastern Europe “continue to be very important and very popular” as far as the marina

market is concerned. “This is where the majority of the people who own the marina are. So, it stays very strong,” Cardona said. Cardona indicated that IGY looks to broadening its horizons over GCC, Croatia, Turkey and eastern Europe. He said IGY is particularly “optimistic” about GCC “because this is the area where the yacht owners live and come on the holidays.” “I think what lies ahead is going to be new areas of GCC—Qatar, Bahrain, Abu Dhabi, and always the Mediterranean through out the Adriatic, Croatia, Turkey up to eastern Europe,” Cardona said. IGY develops and manages marinas and waterfront destinations with about $500 million in investment around the world. It has numerous projects within the GCC region, among them, the Festival Marina at the Dubai Festival City, which has 74 permanent berths; and the Anchor Marina on Palm Jumeirah, which has 520 berths and is scheduled to open this year.

Lagoon Catamarans to launch bigger boats in 2010 Beneteau Group and Lagoon Catamarans will be launching bigger boats next year, according to Christophe Vanek, general manager of Duboats, the exclusive dealer of Benetau and Lagoon in the Middle East. “We are very excited about this,” Vanel told Arabian Yachts.

He said Beneteau will launch the Monte Carlo 70 while Lagoon Catamaran, the Lagoon 400 (40 ft.) and Lagoon 620 (62 ft.). The entry of the Beneteau Monte Carlo 70, will allow it to grab a hold of its share of the cruising boat market from Azimut, Ferretti, and Sunseeker,Vanek said.

support, providing protection and peace of mind. All this comes with the added peace of mind that a company like Sunseeker provides. Known worldwide as the builder of the finest luxury motoryachts, the company has built a reputation for excellence and perfection. To complete the team, Sunseeker Superyacht Management has just taken on a new yacht manager. Polly Winn has more than nine years’ experience in the superyacht industry. Most recently with a yacht brokerage in Antibes, she has an excellent understanding of the market.

Silvestris, maker of the 23’ Sports Cabriolet, is the new kid with a dark Dubai horse, confident that, with its cutting edge technology, the market will go gaga over its Holland-made, 560-hp powerboat which was designed like a super sports car and could go up to 60 knots (111kph). “It’s not like any other sports boat. It’s like driving a car on the water. We have just started here in the Middle East, and people like it because it’s something unique. It’s a very classic design and because it’s a classic, it’s timeless,” says Dave Hahnraths, Silvestris managing director for the Middle East. The car was conceptualized by Dutchman Maarten de Bruijn, designer of the hotrod Spyker. Arabian Yacht asked Hahnraths what he thinks about the competition—the big boys—and here’s what he said:“All those special features that we have, they don’t. So, we are quite unique in the yachting industry. We come from car manufacturing.” Hahnraths says Silvestris is not bothered at all with the current global financial crisis.“Some people, they just love to drive their boats,” he says. “We don’t think we will be affected that much.As we are not into mass production, we are not really afraid. The high-end cars…are getting sold, and this is also what we have.We have a high-end product and with it we are not really afraid,” he adds. Price range for the 23’ Sports Cabriolet, according to Hahnraths, starts at 215,000 euros, approximately 1 million AED. Shipping time is three months. Silvestris was among exhibitors in last month’s Dubai International Boat Show, held from Mar. 3 to 7 at Dubai International Marine Club—Mina Seyahi.

DUBAI INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW

Another milestone in the region's

boating industry The Dubai International Boat Show delivers one of its strongest editions in the event’s history.

T

his year’s Dubai International Boat Show, held against the backdrop of an ongoing global financial gloom, turned out to be a resounding success, officials said. “The global challenges confronting international economies, and the luxury goods market in particular, will only direct more international boat manufacturers and suppliers towards the emerging Middle East markets,” said Helal Saeed Almarri, CEO, Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC), organizer of the event. “The opportunities remain extensive in this region and the Dubai Boat Show is well positioned to provide the international marine industry the boost of confidence and opportunities they are seeking at this critical time,” he added in a statement prepared for media. Data made available by the DWTC showed that more than 721 companies from 50 countries participated in the week-long exposition held at the Dubai

22 Arabian Yachts April 2009

International Marine Club – Mina Seyahi from Mar. 3 to 7. The DWTC said there was a 20% increase in the number of new exhibitors and brands compared to last year’s event. New countries that had representatives to the show, DWTC said, were Bahrain, Cyprus, Djibouti, Latvia, Thailand and the Virgin Islands. Top four countries with the highest number of participating companies were the UAE, Italy, United States and United Kingdom. There were also 15 new international pavilions, including three new ones—Finnish Marine Industries Federation or Finnboat; South African Boat Builders Export Council or SABBEX; and the Associacion Nacional de Empresas Nauticas of Spain, DWTC said. According to DWTC, there were approximately 27,000 visitors to the event, which was held in a massive

85,000 square metres of exhibition space. The show was highlighted by five major global premiers; over 22 regional launches; and 19 superyachts—by itself, a record number and a 45% increase from last year’s. DWTC likewise said that this year’s show had a luxurious display of over 400 boats—”the biggest ever showcase in the Middle East.” The leisure marine industry plays a key strategic role in attracting visitors and driving tourism throughout the UAE and the rest of the Middle East. Current construction of marina projects across the region will see the opening of up to 30,000 berth spaces and an additional 1,500 kilometres of coastline over the next 5 years, according to DWTC. The first Dubai Boat Show was held in 1992. Data on the estimated monetary value of transactions closed during the event was not available as of writing.

BOAT SHOW SPECIAL How bad will the current global financial crisis take its toll on the region's burgeoning boating industry? Arabian Yachts asked two of the industry's top players during the show and here's what they say. Ali Al Jafla, managing director, Sunseeker Middle East next to his mega luxury yatch.

Sultan A. Al Shaali (left), chief executive officer, AS Marine, confers with a client at his company's display area during the17th Dubai International Boat Show held Mar. 3 to 7 at the Dubai International Marine Club, Mina Seyahi. 'The people who could not afford European boats are coming now, looking for locally-made boats which are less than one-third of the price for the same quality. So, we have seen more demands in the past two months.'—Sultan A. Al Shaali, chief executive officer, AS Marine. One man's loss is another man's gain—and so the cliché goes. In this case, the global financial crisis, which has been causing downturns across Europe and the U.S., is actually opening doors of opportunities for the UAE's boating industry, according to Sultan A. Al Shaali, chief executive officer, AS Marine. "The industries, whether it’s yachting, or non-yachting, have been affected. The scale of the effect has varied, where Europe was affected the most, and the U.S., of course," Al Shaali told Arabian Yachts. He said the Middle East was fortunate it has stability in terms of infrastructure that helps to cushion the crisis' impact. "The nice thing about the region is the stability, the economic status. We have been building a strong

infrastructure to adapt to such a situation. We did not drop like the U.S. But, of course, there is a little bit of a recession period which we expect to go up by the end of this year," Al Shaali said. According to him, most of the companies that "expanded outside of their power have to step back." "But the companies that was on their own strength, have their own market, were not even affected the least," he said. He said the local boating industry has not been so much affected. He explained: "The people who cannot afford European boats are coming now looking for locally made boats which are less than one-third of the price for the same quality. "So we have seen more demand in the past two months." He said observers noted that there were more foreign visitors to this year's Dubai International Boat Show than locals. AS Marine was established in 1979. It has a comprehensive network across Europe, the U.S. and Asia. Based in the UAE, AS Marine has, in its product range, 20 luxurious yachts and motor cruises.

'We are monitoring what's going to happen. We slowed down. Last year we had eight boats (sold). This year, we're lucky if we get four.' –Ali Al Jafla, managing director, Sunseeker Middle East. Standing next to his US$24-million Sunseeker super luxury yacht at the 17th Dubai International Boat Show Ali Al Jafla, managing director, Sunseeker Middle East, greets a group of visitors from Saudi Arabia who came to see the boats on display for a possible purchase transaction. Showing them the way and giving them a tour of the boat, Al Jafla was hopeful a deal could be made. "We have been getting lots of inquiries, definitely. We are one of the leading companies on the market. We have a good customer base. We invite our clients, educate them and leave the decision to them. At the end of the show we will see what’s the next move," Al Jafla said. The show which has, over time, developed a growing global appeal as one of the most sought after and strategic leisure marine events in the world, had an ominous hue to it this time, several exhibitors said, referring to the dark clouds hanging thick due to the current

global financial crisis "Of course, that is affecting business. To tell what is going to happen is very difficult. We are watching what is going to happen. We slowed down. I would say," Al Jafla said. "The orders, we have less orders. Last year, we had eight boats. This year, we are looking…we’d be lucky if we get four," he said. Saving on operational costs, Al Jafla said the company has been reviewing its expenditures to see where to cut. Having been making boats for the past 40 years, Sunseeker has become popular among yachting enthusiasts— with around 20 boats, including several mega luxury yachts in its range. Among them is the Sunseeker 46-metre yacht—a tri-deck luxury vessel that can accommodate up to 12 guests and eight crews, and can cruise at speed of up to 20 knots; and the Sunseeker 37-metre yacht, another tri-deck vessel that can accommodate up to 10 guests and seven crews, and can go up to 24 knots. Other boats are the Sunseeker 34-metre luxury yacht that can accommodate 10 guests and 5 crews, and can go up to 26 knots; the Sunseeker 30 metre and the Sunseeker 90 luxury yachts. Sunseeker, which has been a favorite of yacht lovers, has reaped over 30 different awards over the years since 1987 where it received its first one—the Queen's Award for Export Achievement. In 1995, Sunseeker was bestowed the Boat Builder of the Year Award; its Predator 75 received the Motorboat of the Year Award in 1999. In 2007, Sunseeker received its most number of awards in a year, among them, the European Powerboat of the Year given to the boatmaker's Superhawk 43; last year, Sunseeker's Manhattan 60 was given the UK Motor Boat of the Year Award.

ABU DHABI YACHT SHOW

from around the world converge at inaugural Abu Dhabi Yacht Show Officials say huge turnout indicative of the yachting industry’s confidence in UAE.

I

n what has been hailed as a huge vote of confidence by the world's yachting industry in Abu Dhabi and its economy, 20 super and mega yachts with total worth approximately at US$500 million, went on display at the UAE capital city's inaugural boat show, making it the largest gathering of yachts of its class in the region. The Abu Dhabi Yacht Show, held from Mar. 12 to 14 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center was a "clear indication of continuing international confidence in the emirate's robust and resilient economy," said His Excellency Sheik Sultan Bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, chairman of the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority. "There can be few places as well suited as Abu Dhabi to host an event of this nature," he added. The yachts, measuring in length that ranged from 30 metres to 90 metres, with several of them ranking among the world's top 100 yachts, were berthed at ADNEC's new marina—a 2.4 kilometre facility. Gunboat 66 Sugar Daddy sails to an impressive debut at St. Maarten Heineken Regatta

I

n what will go down as one of the windiest, wildest events in the storied history of the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta in the Caribbean, a long and worthy list of new champions were crowned among them, the Gunboat 66 Sugar Daddy which made an impressive debut at the event. It was the last day of the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta and the Gunboat crews were itching to race after the Race Committee declared a lay day on Saturday due to extreme conditions on the Anguilla race course. With a day to rest and plan, Sunday proved to be a tight race on the water. Nora and Bruce Slayden (Sisters, Ore.) on Sugar Daddy once again proved their prowess on

26 Arabian Yachts April 2009

the racecourse leading the Gunboat Class home on the water. While Cream took the handicap win for the series, Sugar Daddy clearly established herself as the fastest Gunboat on the water.. Sunday’s race was from Phillipsburg to Tintamarre Island and back. With steep seas and winds at 20 knots or more, conditions could not be more perfect for the Gunboat Class. The start and short weather leg were led by Cream, with Gunboat’s founder, Peter Johnstone at the helm. Additional crew aboard included long time friends Wendy and Phil Lotz, who came aboard after their Swan 42 was nearly sunk in a devastating collision on Saturday.. Sugar Daddy took control of the race on the brief

reach leg, and extended her lead on the long beat to Tintamarre. The Slaydens had a full house onboard with upwards of 15 friends crewing. While passing Cream, Sugar Daddy pulled their usual pranks and antics to keep the competition light-hearted. Sugar Daddy had her rails lined for a broadside of water balloons. Cream’s crew took a beating under the barrage, but before Sugar Daddy could reload, unexploded balloons were tossed back as Sugar Daddy sped away down the 15-20 knot reach leg.. Before leaving Phillipsburg, the Gunboats were already passing much of the ‘racing’ multihull fleet that had started 5 minutes prior. The windy conditions on the upwind leg to Tintamare kept crews minding

their mainsheets, as everyone pushed their Gunboats to their racing limits. In the gusts, Tim Slade’s Safari showed great bursts of speed, but it was all Sugar Daddy to Tintamare. Bruce noted that it was a lot of fun sailing against the Gunboat 62 and 48 to see the difference between the models. Sugar Daddy seems to walk away upwind with four extra feet along the waterline and larger sail area. She was so smooth and balanced. Leading the way home on the downwind leg, Sugar Daddy blazed the trail with her bright lollipop colored asymmetrical spinnaker. Meanwhile, Cream cut through some rocky waters, dodged keelboats leaning over on their slog to windward, and stayed near the

class leader. With a tight screecher reach to the finish after Phillipsburg, both Sugar Daddy and Cream averaged 15-20 knots on the final leg. And now, with the final day of the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta behind the class, Bruce Slayden has secured Sugar Daddy as the hottest thing in the Gunboat line-up before heading through the Panama Canal to the Galapogos, and onto the north Pacific route to Alaska via Hawaii. Sugar Daddy will definitely be missed by the rest of the Gunboat Class at the British Virgin Islands Sailing Festival and Regatta.. The 2009 St. Maarten Heineken Regatta held in the Caribbean, will largely be remembered as the year a solid northeasterly breeze kicked in on the first day of

the three-day event, and continued in unrelenting style for the duration of the racing. Due to the severity of the winds-which peaked out at nearly 40-knots on Day 1 of the regatta-and the massive, confused seaway that soon accompanied them, race officials decided to forgo the usual Saturday and Sunday racing schedule that in past years took the fleet in and out of the exposed French-side port of Marigot. Instead, the race committee concentrated the weekend competition off Simpson Bay on the island's southern coast. Even so, there was no lack of drama on the race course, where calamity often reigned and blown sails, toppled masts and bone-jarring collisions were all part of the action.

Grandeur Afloat

The 90-metre MY Dubawi The 90-metre MY Dubawi, one of the 100 biggest yachts in the world, was a cruise vessel converted to epitomize the quintessential form of luxury at sea. MY Dubawi, was a nondescript, probably extraneous and insipid, passenger vessel that underwent metamorphosis to epitomize the ethereal summation of how grandeur should be at sea. This mega yacht has six high-class accommodation decks providing for ample interior and exterior space for two owner suites, eight VIP suites and 12 guest cabins; and allows for a great variety of use and activities including dinning, outdoor areas with new swim platform, Jacuzzis, barbeque area and much more. The layout utilizes a wide variety of fabrics, wood finishing, marble, stones, mosaic and metal finishing in the luxury accommodation, including all custom design carpets and mosaic patterns. Second deck houses the dining saloon that can host up to 60 guests. On the third deck is the main entrance with central staircase and passenger elevator serving all

A large majlis is on the fourth deck and a large open space with retractable sun awning, bar, barbeque, dinning and exterior seating arrangements is on the fifth. The Jacuzzi, as well as the sunbed area, is on the sixth deck

And Dubai based Platinum Yachts FZCO, the company behind her metamorphosis, has been getting all the fittingly extravagant and enthusiastic review from boating pundits.

MY Dubawi has a fully centralized entertainment system with local TV/DVD units in guest cabins and saloons and top-quality stereo system throughout with integrated local controls. The vessel has a round bilge steel hull and steel/ aluminium superstructure. Its propulsion consists of twin Controllable Pitch Propellers driven by conventional shaft system connected to 2 Main Engines (Man B&W, 3430hp each) via reduction gears. Indeed, MY Dubawi enjoys much-deserved Êclat wherever it goes—it was a stole the show at the recently

Platinum Yachts started the conversion of the cruise ship in June of 2007. The vessel, an ex-Renaissance series built in Italy in 1989 had a large volume compared to her length. Conversion was completed in 18 months, with the delivery made at the end of 2008. The conversion was very successful, noting that the vessel offers what the owners require: large volume considering her 90 metres of length and shallow draft allowing access to all the major marinas, bays and beaches to enjoy in a luxury life-style on the water.

riving pleasure—The feeling one gets driving on the road. Silvestris 23' Sports Cabriolet driving pleasure—The feeling one gets cruising on board this work of

art at sea. The style of essence and the essence of style is what the Silvestris 23' Sports Cabriolet is all about. Designed by Dutchman Maarten de Bruijn, an icon in the world of supercars, the focus was on maximizing performance and taking technology just a little bit further. This led to a boat that captures the essence

30 Arabian Yachts April 2009

of the classic runabout, yet taking it to another high end level. Without compromising the virtues of a high performance speedboat, Silvestris succeeded in creating class leading comfort for 4 persons. A revolutionary feature like the remote control hatches turns the boat into a roadster or closes it like an oyster. The Silvestris 23 Sports Cabriolet oozes style, not because it was made to do so‌, but it just does. Nope. The Silvestris 23' Sports Cabriolet is not a sportscar. But it does have a lightweight body. The aluminium skin is riveted and bonded to a tubular space frame.

Cutting edge, patented engineering that makes the Silvestris 23 SC the strongest and most durable boat of its kind. The hull shows extreme rigidity, has very effective sprayrails and features a stabilizing crashbox type stern. The bow is strengthened by a piece of machined aluminium that secures perfect alignment of the longitudinal tubes. In the engine room sits a state of the art 5.7 litre V8 Duoprop sterndrive unit, that received special attention in order to reach the lowest levels in noise, vibration and harshness. Incorporated in the exhaust system are unique, electronically operated Engine Note Enhancement Valves (ENAV).

INTERVIEW

Visionary Juergen Clement, Chief Executive Officer, Clement Systems Gulf FZCO, is the man behind the world’s first concrete six lined floating bridge, which was completed in June 2007, and spans across the 320-meter Dubai Creek in the United Arab Emirates.

W

hat inspired you to pursue constructing floating structures? I have visited a lot of harbors and marina around the world. As I studied engineering specialized on water construction and saw right from the beginning after I have built harbors around the globe Europe, also, in Brazil and El Salvador. I realized that nobody has enough land for all the facilities needed at a harbor, like the harbor master building and coffee shops, those extras who makes the difference. I guess every boater will understand me. My idea—to build on the water seemed suddenly so obvious.

look. These simple needs made me consider that we need floating foundations based on the structure for various reasons.

My first thoughts were to build a floating harbor, it must be possible to transfer amenities like a restaurant to the water and so give them a unique

We started constructing massive floating structures in 2003 for the World Exhibition in Gardening in Germany. We build those platforms each over 4000

People say you’re a visionary. Comment please. I wouldn’t go that far, but please let me thank you. After working so many years with marinas and as an engineer, I guess to question every traditional idea became a habit. But please don’t misunderstand me, I have a team of engineers and employees who share my passion for the water and are thinking about every possibility as much as I do. I am in the luxury situation that I can rely on my team.

sqm in the winter and could observe how the plants and trees could grow on them. It was a fantastic experience, especially to see how the people enjoyed it who visited that exhibition. Would you say that 100 years from now people would be living in floating homes? Yes, I would even go that far to say it will be average in the next 10 years. We already built floating homes in Germany, even a diving school. If I just see the shoreline stretching from Abu Dhabi with those beautiful beaches, to see the long promenade that we can built on that water is so obvious. The technical part to design and construct floating attractions is definitely possible and there are no limits for ideas, starting with floating restaurant, Yachts clubs or marinas. And it will happen. People

His patented technology allowed for more than 25,000 tons of concrete, reinforced with over 2,500 tons of steel to float across the Creek’s harsh saltwater environment. It was also constructed to withstand wind speeds of up to 160 kilometers (100 miles) per hour and waves of up to 1.8 meters (6 ft) in height and live load of 45 tons Trucks. He founded his company in Germany in 1988; and started operations in Dubai in 2004.

enjoy the ocean and the relaxation it brings, to live on it is just the next step. The future is here, then. The future has started and especially here in the UAE. You see floating structures worldwide and it will grow more and more. I remember how it started with providing berths for yachts sixteen years ago. At that time 30 meter yachts were huge yachts. If I see now the dimensions of yachts there are no limits anymore, its possible to build what you wish, 80 meter or 100 meter yachts and you will find them. As the size of yachts has increased there is a demand of parking space for these yachts. Additionally they have to be maintained, a yacht, every boat needs maintenance and attention. So to go over water with no limits is the easiest solution.

Is there a market for floating homes? There is a big market out there. The idea has just to be introduced to the end user. But what about the cost? Wouldn’t it be more expensive to build floating homes than build houses on land? That’s a good question. But as I said the possibilities you have with floating structures is nearly endless. To build a house on water has nearly the same expenses then to build them on land. Both need a foundation just put the foundation on water and there are no limits for the materials. You can build your floating home out of steel and glass or take a wooden structure. Your personal taste can decide the looks The only limit is maybe the height of your house, you can’t build skyscrapers. A two or three leveled home that’s possible and has been already built by

our company. Floating homes, what about floating villages? Oh, now you mention my dream. This is my personal dream—to build an urban floating village, not only floating houses. A village with all his needs to connect those floating structures with each other, considering all steps from the technical and administrative side that sounds like a task to me. Floating homes demand very tasking, engineering skills. How do you do it? At the end of the day, it is all a question of calculation and a question of the right material with an extreme good quality; but that’s just half the glass, the work itself needs good labor, you need good engineers. You need a team.

Located on the island of Kood to the south-east of the Gulf of Thailand and around 160 nautical miles from Bangkok, the setting for this extraordinary resort definitely falls into the category of remote. However modern-day Robinson Crusoes need not feel challenged, as every effort has been made to make the destination very accessible for guests. Previously, the journey would have taken more than three hours from the capital, by air and sea; but with the introduction of Soneva Kiri’s own 8-seat, specially fitted, luxurious Cessna Grand Caravan, the flight time is less than one hour from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport to Soneva Kiri’s private

A shame, actually, as the Aqua Sense craft is a real joy, and a longer trip in it would be even more fun. But then, to arrive at Soneva Kiri is the real reward. Koh Kood has been described as Thailand’s last frontier. And quite rightly, with so much development focus being on the other side of the Gulf of Thailand—traditional places like Phuket, Samui and Hua Hin, and the emerging locations beyond Phuket such as Yao Noi and Naka. This was a significant factor in choosing Kood island for the remarkable Soneva Kiri. It fulfilled Six Senses founders, Sonu and Eva Shivdasani, positioning of

Soneva as remote but accessible, while being able to deliver intelligent luxury in an exclusive setting for their high-end clients. Virtually untouched, Koh Kood has beautiful rain forests, natural mangrove swamplands fringing parts of the island, waterfalls and some fascinating wildlife inhabitants. This is an idyllic backdrop in which to showcase the Six Senses core purpose of creating innovative and enriching experiences that rejuvenate our guests’ love of slow life. From responsible water activities to nature trekking, Koh Kood offers an abundance of natural choices, while Soneva Kiri itself presents a host of unique experiences and personalised service standards that have become synonymous with the Soneva brand.
