Motormouth If any, the 2008 Abu Dhabi International Motor Show’s resounding success, with its turnout of close to 50,000 people, points to one thing: The United Arab Emirates has secured its place under the sun this part of the world inasfar as the motoring industry is concerned. And what does this entail? Opportunities. Endless ones! Organized at a time when the whole world was catching the cold from America’s financial sneeze, the largest and most comprehensive motor show in the Middle East, held from Dec. 17 to 21 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, put smiles on the faces of the exhibitors and car manufacturers. This could translate to a much-need shot in the arm for UAE with its stock market dilemma , real estate slowdowns, and a jittery banking sector—this in terms of the resulting increase in economic activity. Indeed, the event proved that Abu Dhabi is the place to showcase everything because when Abu Dhabi holds a motor show, the rest of the Middle East watch closely. Ahmed Abdullatif, Renault general manager, could not have put it any better when he said that the motor show, which was projected to become a Class B event at a regional level, would allow car manufacturers to see the Abu Dhabi as the ideal platform to hold regional launches and premieres for new models. This only means one thing—Abu Dhabi, and the UAE for the matter, is now at the frontlines of the motoring industry, having nurtured its own over time, and become a household name for car enthusiasts in the region who look to the place for the hottest on the market. Figures speak for itself: 80 exhibitors featuring 50 brands of luxury, high performance, custom-built, concept and hybrid, sports, and family cars; executive saloons, off-road vehicles, SUVs, quads and motorcycles; trucks and pickups, vans and mini buses, luxury coaches, limousines and trailers and campers. There also were 400 latest models from over 30 global vehicle manufacturers. Noteworthy too, is the fact that the Abu Dhabi motor show had seen 19 Middle East launches, including Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 Spyder; Koleos, Laguna Coupe, Symbol and Logan from Renault. This time around, the Ultimate Aero, the first ever production model of the Shelby Super Car and Concept Cars such as the S400 Hybrid from Mercedes, Laguna Coupe from Renault, Lexus LF-A, Mitsubishi CX and Toyota ABat hugged the limelight. Kudos to organizers of the 2008 Abu Dhabi International Motor Show!

The new MINI Convertible is set to make a welcome return to UK roads in 2009, with a completely new version of the British-built favourite due to go on sale on 28 March. MINI Cooper and Cooper S derivatives featuring innovative engine technologies will be offered at launch, meaning fans of the compact, premium new MINI Convertible are guaranteed performance, frugality, minimal running costs and a unique image as standard. The first-generation MINI Convertible experienced remarkable sales success in Britain and was a best seller in the UK in the small convertible segment between 2004 and 2008. Approximately 164,000 MINI Convertibles were delivered to owners around the world during its lifecycle. Demand for its successor, complete with an array of technological and design advances, is sure to be strong. The automatic canvas roof of the second-generation new MINI Convertible can be fully retracted or closed using a roof-frame mounted toggle switch in just 15 seconds. In the event of a driver being caught unexpectedly by a sudden downpour, this function will fully operate with the car at speeds of up to 20 mph. As an alternative to the complete top-down driving experience, the full-width of the electric roof can be retracted by approximately 40 centimetres to create the effect of a sunroof. This function can be operated at speeds of up to 75 mph.

secret weapon for dealers across the country. The eye-catching saloon which is limited to just 250 examples is powered by a 1.9 JTDM 150bhp diesel engine. It will reach 62mph from rest in 9.2 seconds and 47mpg (official combined mpg figure).

The Audi A5 with a sunnier disposition - the new A5 Cabriolet - is set to make its UK debut next spring, and will be closely followed by a new S5 Cabriolet flagship. Available to order from February, the striking four-seat A5 softtop range capitalizes on the space maximizing extended wheelbase length and state-ofthe art engines, transmissions and chassis configuration that have secured success for the A5 Coupé. Chosen in preference to heavy and complex folding metal roof systems, the lightweight soft-top in the new A5 Cabriolet features a heated glass rear window, and in just 15 seconds retracts into a compartment within

the boot that automatically lowers to accommodate it. Equally importantly under UK skies, it also raises again in only 17 seconds, and can complete both operations at speeds of up to 31mph. When in place the three-layer roof very effectively insulates occupants from external noise, and for optimum refinement an optional acoustic hood is also available to reduce sound intrusion to virtually the same level as the A5 Coupe.

Appointments Greg Levine has assumed the role of Head of Operations for Audi UK, rising to the challenge of maintaining the Vorsprung durch Technik brand’s trend-defying buoyancy in the UK new car market, a company press advisory has stated. Levine, 37, will draw on extensive experience gained in sales, marketing and product development positions in Europe and South Africa within Nissan, Fiat and Audi to sustain the brand’s strong UK sales performance. “I’m focusing on maintaining the Audi brand’s momentum whilst ensuring we are consistently and effectively delivering outstanding customer service,” said Levine. Roof up or down, the A5 Cabriolet makes light work of transporting up to four adults in comfort thanks to its extended wheelbase, which helps to maximize cabin space. When the soft top is in place, a best-in-class luggage capacity of 380 litres also enables easy accommodation of luggage for four, and in topless mode the roof stowage compartment only marginally reduces this impressive total to 320 litres. Thanks to the standard split/ folding rear seat back a maximum capacity of 750 litres can be accessed if required.

In this year’s season, the AUDI will compete once again in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and in the DTM. Additionally, with the new Audi R8 LMS, Audi Sport offers for the first time a racing sports car specifically developed for customer use. “We know just how important motorsport is for the success of the brand,” said Michael Dick, who as chairman of the Board for Technical Development, is responsible for the AUDI AG motorsport programme. “Therefore it goes without saying that Audi must also be present on the race track in economically hard times. It is all the more important for us to enter a motorsport category in which the costbenefit calculation is positive.” Audi therefore continues to support sport prototypes and the DTM. With the Audi R8 LMS, Audi also offers customer

teams a racing car incorporating highquality technology and the typical Audi traits but which is, however, also easy to operate. Audi aims to demonstrate “Vorsprung durch Technik” specifically in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Audi is just one victory behind Ferrari in the French endurance classic’s all time winners’ list following its eighth victory last June. Only Porsche has more wins at Le Mans. Audi targets the ninth victory in probably the world’s toughest car race, in which the development of alternative and fuel-saving power concepts are the focus of attention, in June 2009 with a newly developed LMP1 sports car. The Audi R15 TDI differs significantly from its predecessor, the R10 TDI, at first glance and features many technically innovative details with which Audi aims to maintain its supremacy in Le Mans.

Even though we’ve started building customer cars, these won’t be delivered until next summer, so the prototype is currently the only one in existence and remains a rare sight. I guess it was bound to grab attention, particularly being a Spanish car in front of its home crowd.”

Superleague Formula CEO and series founder Alex Andreu, who was invited to drive the car, said: “The Aspid would make an excellent safety car, particularly when leading a field of very high performance race cars over a Grand Prix circuit, and we are looking into this as a possibility. The Aspid meets FIA safety requirements as well as European road car homologation requirements in its standard form without the need for any modifications. This is a purebred race car and even with just four laps I really started to enjoy its extreme performance.”

Autohorn gets 60 Volvo C30’S Volvo’s C30 R-DESIGN Sport is setting one rental company apart from the opposition in the city of York. Europcar franchisee, Autohorn Ltd has taken delivery of 60 striking C30’s to become part of its 400-strong daily rental fleet. Autohorn selected the sporty Volvo C30 with its 2-litre 136 PS diesel engine and CO2 emissions of just 151 g/km over more traditional rivals for a number of key reasons, not least for its head turning R-DESIGN bodykit and high level of standard features. Autohorn customers will benefit from four leather trimmed seats, matching steering wheel, aluminium sports pedals and gear knob insert, blue instrument dials and a class leading audio system, all of which are standard on the R-DESIGN Sport model. Maserati’s ‘sporty DNA’

The new Fiat Panda Cross, a car that was launched in the UK only four months ago, has scooped its first major off-roading honour – 4x4 of the Year 2009. The award comes from the specialist magazine 4x4 and MPV Driver, whose panel of expert judges put the new all-terrain Panda at the top of a list of extremely capable, and more expensive, competitors. The judges praised the Panda’s offroading capability, style and affordability but particularly highlighted the car’s brilliant 1.3 16v MultiJet turbodiesel engine – previously unavailable in a right-hand drive Panda 4x4. Andrew Humberstone, managing director, Fiat Group Automobiles UK, said: “The Panda has a long and distinguished record in this country – as it has across Europe – and it’s fantastic to see it not only continuing to be a top choice for our customers, but still able to impress very influential judging panels.” As with any Panda, the Cross’s fuel consumption and emissions are exceptionally low. It returns 42.1 mpg in the urban cycle, 67.3 mpg extra-urban, and 54.3 combined. The CO2 figure is 136 g/km.

Maserati has developed a special series of new options named “MC Sport Line”, which made its worldwide debut at the Bologna Motor Show in December, with new content that adds to Maserati’s already extensive range of personalisation options. The “MC Sport Line” is designed to enhance the sporty DNA of Maseratis for customers who like to express their passion for racing through dynamic styling and a choice of technical solutions that increase driving fun without compromise. The name “MC Sport Line” sums up the on-track experience gained by the Maserati Corse department, whose contribution to the design of the functional components has been invaluable. The German-based company has made inroads into Dubai and plan to set up shops in other GCC countries. The company’s stand at the Abu Dhabi Motor Show was just amazing. A police cruiser with attractive foil work was among the demo vehicles. The stand also showed off a hub wheel plated, hold your breath, in 24-karat gold. Swen Roters is the brain behind this innovative technology that’s bound to attract car-crazy young men in the Middle East. Dubai roads see many highend modified vehicles as well as cars with tinted window glasses. Foil coating is another step forward in dressing expensive cars in varied colours and designs. The enthusiastic Roters explained that his company’s foil wrapping is very trusted because of his mechanical process that ensures total protection. “Foil wrapping acts as bodyguard against the weather. No matter whether it is extreme cold or extreme hot, the foil will not peel off. The polyvinyl chloride(PVC) matariel can withstand weather from minus 40 celsius to 92 degree celsius. The foil is completely invisible and does not require any special maintenance. The car can be washed and waxed as usual,” Roters affirmed. He stressed that his company performs “fully removable foil coating”, whereby the original colour remains untouched. “The technology is unlike air-brushing or re-painting. You can get back the original colouring or apply another colour foil at any time and in no time. The foil ensures the same optical appearance and surface structure like a regular paint finish.” he assured. Roters claims that its DUGuard automotive

tinting foils were especially developed for the needs of Dubai’s market. The hightech foils come in different shades, from extra dark to light, while its transparent foil protects the occupants and the car by offering an anti-burst effect in case of accident or attack. The transparent foil can also be used for the windshield. Roters said that he came to Dubai in 2005 to survey the market and then returned back the next year to talk to prospective local partners. He found one partner but after a couple of months he realised that the partner was not professionally suitable. After finding another partner and also dismissing him as unsuitable, Roters ultimately settled for partnership with Qatar’s royal family. This new partnership will handle not just the GCC market but

worldwide. To his surprise Roters found that one previous partner has launched his own company using the Foilacar name and trademark. “I have filed a suit under intellectual property rights against the person,” Roters disclosed. Roters uses his fellow Germans to oversee the technical aspects of the Dubai operations at the workshop in Al Quoz. The workshop does the pre-cuts using Computer-Aided Design (CAD)which are then pasted on the vehicles using special paste. There are six teams of three each that can handle 30 to 40 vehicles a month. The company also undertakes building windows or architechtural glass surfaces, now so common in modern architecture, by using special films.

The 5 day Abu Dhabi International Motor Show 2008 was a resounding success, with a high visitor turnout and satisfied exhibitors, according to event organizers. “We received an excellent response to the Abu Dhabi International Motor Show, as reflected in the 48,567 visitors at the show as well as happy exhibitors. Our ticket sales far exceeded the 2006 edition by 250 percent,” said Ara Fernezian, Group Exhibition Director of Reed Exhibitions Middle East. This year’s largest and most comprehensive motor show in the Middle East was under the patronage of His Highness Lt. Gen. Sheikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Interior. It was held on Dec. 17-21, 2008 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre. Exhibitors were very pleased with the number of visitors and quality of customers that came to their stands. “The Abu Dhabi International Motor Show was projected to become a Class B event at a regional level. Car manufacturers will see the show as the ideal platform to make regional launches and premiers,” said Ahmed Abdullatif, General Manager of Renault. Khaled Ishaq, Senior Manager-Premium Brands, Liberty Automobiles of General Motors stated: “The turnout was outstanding. There was a healthy traffic on our stand and we had a good volume of reservations. We expect to see them again at our showrooms in Abu Dhabi.” “It was the first time we participated at the motor show and we had a great five days. This opportunity of being part with the market is effective and promising,” Adi Al Bitar, B2C Marketing Manager of Shell Lubricants commented. Noting that it was also the first time they exhibited, Andrew Wagner, General Manager of Enviro Motion said: “It is a great show. The public had been very interested in our products and we had a very strong interaction. We’re very happy; the show has worked very well for us.” Abdulla Al Romaithi, Managing Director of Sand Motec said: “I have printed out more than 10,000 giveaways and all of them were gone. The visitors at our stand were more than what I expected, considering that we are situated at the corner.” Organized by Reed Exhibitions Middle East, the Abu Dhabi International Motor Show 2008 occupied 38,000 sqm of indoor and outdoor exhibit space at ADNEC. 80 exhibitors showcased 50 brands of

luxury cars, high performance cars, custombuilt cars, executive saloons, concept and hybrid cars, sports cars, off-road vehicles, family cars and SUVs, motorcycles and quad bikes. Commercial vehicles such as trucks and pickups, vans and mini buses, luxury coaches, limousines and trailers and campers were also displayed. In addition, the show also featured car automotive accessories and auto-related services. The Motor Show, which featured an incredible array of 400 latest models from over 30 global vehicle manufacturers, has seen 19 Middle East launches. They include Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 Spyder; Koleos, Laguna Coupe, Symbol and Logan from Renault; GMC Denali; Chevrolet Malibu and Cruze; Cadillac CTSV 4 and Escalade; Hummer HRT; Dodge Challenger SRT8; Lexus Rx350; Toyota Sequoia; Mitsubishi ‘I’; Skoda Octavia; Hyundai Coupe Genesis and Ford Fiesta. Other exhibits at the show included the Ultimate Aero, the first ever production model of the Shelby Super Car and Concept Cars such as the S400 Hybrid from Mercedes, Laguna Coupe from Renault, Lexus LF-A, Mitsubishi CX and Toyota ABat. Renault and Ferrari also displayed their affiliated F1 cars at the show. Several co-located events and promotions also took place. Emirates Motor Company (EMC) offered a Mercedes test drive to visitors at the show. Al Hilal Bank unveiled its auto finance offers with instant approvals for those who purchased cars at the show. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Interior and Abu Dhabi police had organised a number of interactive activities that emphasized road safety awareness at the Motor Show. Raffle draws included a grand prize of LR2 by Land Rover, two pair of tickets to the Abu Dhabi F1 race by Renault; two airline tickets by Etihad Airways and a host of prizes such as Nokia phones and free stays at luxury hotels in the UAE were offered by Sony Playstation, Ford and Foilacar Europe. ENOC and Etisalat also hosted a range of activities at their stands with exciting prizes. The Motor Show has attracted about 49,000 auto enthusiasts, industry professionals and spectators from the UAE and across the region. “The show was very good. What I particularly liked about it was the accessibility of the cars on display which is unusual with motor shows of this calibre. There was a large variety of cars on display

James Knight, head of Bonhams’ Motoring Department, was in Dubai for a special presentation on the worldwide classic cars market, held Nov. 20th, 2008 at the One & Only Royal Mirage Hotel. Bonhams is an international fine art auction house established in the UK in 1973. The following are excerpts of an interview Mr. Knight granted Car Xpress.

Car Xpress: In a media release sent, you were quoted as saying that the Middle East is tipped to become an emerging market for classic car sales. Please expound. Are we seeing more classic car enthusiasts in the region now?

James Knight: We are beginning to see some classic car enthusiasts in the Middle East. Ten years ago… there weren’t really any visible collectors out there at all, but today we are seeing a few collectors come forward into the market. We believe this is a result not only of regional economic growth, but of a developing awareness about the classic car market. CX: How would Bonham’s come into the picture, specifically, in as far as aiming to support and develop this emerging market?

James Knight: Bonhams will support the market by providing advice to those in the classic car market. That is why I have visited Dubai, a place that I have not previously visited. In the first instance, this will take the form of the presentation specifically arranged for classic cars at the One and Only Royal Mirage Hotel. But obviously, we will additionally be available for private consultations with individual clients. In a way, I hope to learn more about this fascinating region in order to give me an experienced opinion. But it need not end there, my worldwide motoring departments are ready to give advice and support to those entering, and already in, the market. Bonhams is one of the leading auction houses for classic cars and memorabilia, and this first foray into the Middle East is mainly for us to gauge the appetite and enthusiasm for serious car collection in the Middle East. CX: There were four cars from a UAE-based private collection that reportedly went on display at the Royal Mirage—a 1931 Lincoln Model K Rumble-Seat Roadster, a 1955 Ford Thunderbird Convertible, a 1965 Bentley S3 Saloon and a 1972 Ferrari 246GT Dino Coupe. Do you think there are more out there?

James Knight: Yes, there are definitely more out there. These four cars formed part of one gentleman’s private collection. However there are certainly other people with collections which are kept out of the public eye, purely for the enjoyment of the owner. Not just in Dubai, but the Gulf region as a whole. CX: You’d mentioned that for too long, the world of classic motor cars has been the domain of Europe, America, Australasia and Japan, and it’s refreshing to see collectors from the Middle East now becoming passionate about vintage cars and

memorabilia. Kindly please expound.

James Knight: Traditional markets such as Europe, America, Japan and Australasia have witnessed enthusiasm for vintage cars for many years – for a number of reasons. In the Middle East, as little as twenty years ago few people were (not) even aware of the classic car market. However, as the world shrinks and information is more readily available, we are seeing more people becoming informed on this passionate hobby. Coupled with the amazing growth this region has seen in recent times, and the amount of enthusiasm on the rise, it is clear that classic car collecting is becoming more exposed. The prime interest shown is toward modern higher performance and luxury motor cars. My principal aim during my visit was to see if there was an appetite toward older classics and… if they’d be useable in this climate. Our aim with this presentation is to help people understand the heritage of vintage cars and the fun that can be had with them. CX: You’d also mentioned the need to have the infrastructure in place to cater for vintage and classic cars for the market to truly emerge in this region. Also, kindly please expound some more.

James Knight: If the average Middle East gentlemen were thinking about buying a 1950s JaguarXK120, he would have to consider that he may be forced to ship it abroad every time it required work beyond a regular service. This implies additional costs, time away from the vehicle, insurance issues and the added worry and hassle of organising such inter-continental work. As a result, the growth in this market cannot come from one source alone, by definition; a core market needs support services and vice versa, otherwise neither will grow. If a regional infrastructure was already in place to cater for the vintage and classic car market, then people would be more readily able to buy these cars. The two must happen in tandem with one another – for example collectors clubs, owners clubs for a particular age or model of car, as well as events for old cars need to be ready to flourish. It will create a community of enthusiasts who are able to support each other and develop their shared passion. CX: Lastly, what would your advice be to classic and vintage car enthusiasts in the region?

This will provide them with opportunities to see these vehicles firsthand and to talk to other motoring enthusiasts and owners to really get a feel for the style and range of vehicles available. However, this is obviously a time consuming process. For those who want to understand more about the vintage and classic car market right now, classic car experts from Bonhams are available to provide them with the right advice and guidance on which cars to collect, and which cars would suit their personal requirements best. We’re just as passionate about classic cars as the most enthusiastic collector, and I think I’ve probably got the perfect dream job – travelling around the world, meeting fellow enthusiasts and collectors and talking about cars.

The cost of cutting a dash in the Audi A5 coupé has just been further reduced by the frugal new 53mpg A5 2.0 TDI, which is available now in front-wheel-drive and quattro four-wheel-drive, and will reach its first UK customers in March 2009. Its launch also coincides with the introduction of the even more striking S line specification for all A5 models. In keeping with its performance coupé positioning, the A5 adopts the most powerful, 170PS version of the new generation 2.0-litre TDI unit first seen in the A4 Saloon and Avant. Enhanced by an advanced common rail piezo fuel injection system, the state-of-the art unit makes its impressive 350Nm torque output available from just 1,750rpm, and by fully exploiting this via the standard six-speed manual transmission the 0-62mph sprint can be dispatched in just 8.3 seconds in the front-wheel-drive version. This strong performance is underpinned by fuel economy that at 53.3mpg on the combined cycle is 20 per cent better than the already sparing A5 2.7 TDI (44.1mpg), and CO2 output that at 140g/km is 9 per cent down on the next lowest producer, the A5 2.0 TFSI (154g/km) The significantly improved refinement of the new common rail TDI and the sophistication of the aluminum-rich five-link front and trapezoidal link rear suspension make for unruffled progress in the A5 2.0 TDI, helped by its longest-in-class wheelbase. The repositioned front axle permitting shorter overhangs and much improved axle load distribution also work in favour of handling balance and agility, traits which are especially evident in the quattro version with its latest generation system with 40/60 front-to-rear power distribution.

New S line option Even sharper response is available to drivers who choose the optional Sport upgrade, which along with 18-inch 10-spoke V-design alloy wheels and sports seats, brings sports suspension lowered by 20mm. This

suspension set up is also included as part of the new S line specification available for all A5 models, which features 18-inch 5-spoke S line alloy wheels, an exclusive S line front and rear bumper design, side sill extensions, S line treatments for the interior and xenon headlamps with LED daytime running lights. S line subscribers also have the option to specify an even more driver-focused S line suspension at no extra cost. The addition of the latest generation 2.0 TDI engine brings the total number of units powering the A5 to six. The range includes 2.7-litre and 3.0-litre V6 diesels with outputs of 190PS and 240PS, two 2.0-litre TFSI petrol units with 180PS and 211PS and a 3.2-litre V6 FSI petrol with 265PS. The Audi A5 has been crafted into a modern grand tourer, based on a classic vehicle concept but given an excitingly new interpretation by Audi. Its striking appearance is achieved through the elegant yet sporty exterior lines which already hint at what lies beneath in terms of excellent dynamics.

Concept and Design The new Audi A5 makes design statement of sportiness and elegance with its sporty silhouette, its precisely drawn lines powerful surfaces, its expressive front face and equally distinctive tail. The broad, low body measures in at 4.63 meters in length; its overall proportions are defined by the short front overhang and elongated transition from the C pillars to the short tail panel. The large air inlets and headlights reflect the precision and modern technology of Audi while the LED daytime running lights underscore the sporty look of the A5. The mighty trapezoidal C pillar emphasizes the car’s sporty appeal and the marked outline of the wheel arches with their curving contours drawn into the wide shoulder line complete the unique look of sculptured dynamics. Elegance, ergonomics and functionality dominate the interior of the A5, as do the exclusive materials used and the top-ofthe-line craftsmanship that is a trademark

of Audi. The entire cockpit architecture is clearly focused on the driver. The fourseater offers the generous space of a full-fledged touring car even in the backseat, and its 455 liters of trunk space means there is always room for those few extra shopping bags.

Equipment The Audi A5 is setting the pace with its extensive line of standard equipment, which includes 18-inch alloy wheels, Xenon plus headlights and LED daytime running lights. In the interior the new Audi A5 features electric Milano leather seats with lumbar support in front, the multifunction sport steering wheel with shift paddles and the driver information system with color display, the Audi parking system plus as well as the Audi drive select. The standard symphony audio system includes a CD changer, MMI operating logic, a separate display and ten speakers. The deluxe climate control, which divides the interior into three separate temperature zones, the new comfort key, which receives and stores vehicle data for servicing, and the electromechanical parking brake are also among the items included in the standard package. The options offer even more high-tech features from the luxury class. The highlight among the infotainment features is the Bang & Olufsen sound the system with 14 surround-sound speakers and 505 watts of music output. The MM Interface with TV reception and navigation system is rounded off by the Bluetooth car phone and an intelligent interface called AMI which allows an iPod to be navigated directly through the MMI screen. The Audi parking system advanced uses a rearview camera to display the space behind the car. Upon request Audi can also equip the coupe with high-tech adaptive cruise control and Audi side assist, which regulate the distance to the car in front and help the driver when it comes to changing lanes. Further optional features are the adaptive light system, the extra-large panoramic sunroof and advanced key with keyless entry function.

On 14 April 1927, the very first seriesproduced Volvo car, the ÖV4 nicknamed the Jakob, left the factory. Fast forward to 2005 and in a rural area south of Sweden, Leif Tufvesson1 and his company Caresto start work on injecting modern craftsmanship and design into the car and the result is the Hot Rod Jakob. This unique car had been unveiled at the Volvo Museum in Gothenburg, Sweden. Parked side by side, the similarities between old and new are remarkable, including the curvature of the bonnet which has exactly the same radius. The characteristic windscreen attachment pillar that runs down the body side follows the original in detail as does dimensions, materials and the number of screws used. Equally identical is the radiator grille with its characteristic mesh pattern and diagonal bar that incorporates the classic iron symbol. The body has been built by hand from raw aluminum panels that were bent into their final shape using a hammer and English wheel - exactly as it was done in the prototype workshop back in the 1920s. There are differences, the Hot Rod Jakob is far smaller than the original. It is a twoseater instead of offering space for four and it has those typical Hot Rod attributes: large wheels, no wings and a muscular rear axle. And if you get a bit closer it is possible to see differences in terms of materials and details. The chassis is built of lightweight carbon fibre, just like today’s most advanced racing cars, not from heavy steel beams as in bygone times. The brake discs are remarkably slim, but their huge diameter (450 mm front, 515 mm rear) guarantee that the braking surface is still going to be more than sufficient. The wheel spokes are made of aluminum instead of wood, but they are exactly the same in number. The massive tyres with their specially milled tread in the form of Volvo’s iron symbol give an assertive, modern aura. Most of the components have been hidden away inside the body of the Hot Rod Jakob, including the springs and dampers, electrical components and exhaust system, making the car aesthetically elegant and stylishly minimalist. The result is that the body and axles look like they are floating in the air.

Classic parts A closer look at the seating compartment reveals deeply rounded backrests instead of a single flat bench, creating a robust and sporty atmosphere. The seats are upholstered in light brown hide. The piping, the upright rifling

on the backrest, resembles the original, while the perforated flat upper section behind the seat echoes more modern styling cues. A glance at the instrument panels reveals no conventional gauges. Instead, all the functions are gathered into a single, in-house-developed instrument to the right of the steering wheel. The dial face changes colour and function when pressed. Press once: the ignition comes on and the button glows red. Press the clutch and the button turns purple. Press once more and the engine fires up smoothly and the button’s colour turns Volvo Blue. “I really love combining old solutions with my very own ideas. Creating a fine balance between high-tech and tradition that works seamlessly. Dusting off old parts to renovate a car to original condition is not something that appeals to me,” says Leif Tufvesson. There are also classic Volvo parts in the Hot Rod Jakob. The steering wheel comes from a 1962 P1800, as do the gear lever gaiter and steering column, while the brake pedal and brake master cylinder are from the 140 Series. All parts were supplied by Volvo Genuine Classic Parts (Volvo has one of the industry’s widest ranges of genuine manufacturer’s spare parts). The M90 gearbox is Volvo’s last rear-wheel drive variant and comes from a Volvo 960. The engine, on the other hand, is brand new - a powerful Volvo T5 converted to run on eco-friendly ethanol, all so as to underline the lifecycle approach to this entire project.

‘Work of art’ The Hot Rod Jakob project has challenged not only Leif’s skills as a car builder but also perceptions of the Volvo brand. Just how does this car fit in with the image of safe, secure Volvo? “Absolutely perfectly, in fact. We have for some time now been moving Volvo towards a more daring design language. The Hot Rod Jakob does of course go its own way, but I regard it more as a work of art than as a Hot Rod. The car is built with the very same Scandinavian design tradition as our modern Volvo models. Lean elegance, yet in a way that sticks out,” says Volvo Cars design director Steve Mattin. “That was exactly what made it so exciting. The paradoxes in the project. Challenging the usual perceptions of Volvo and showing that it is perfectly possible to balance modern design and technology with classic Volvo and Hot Rod traditions,” answers Leif Tufvesson when asked the same question. Stylish and powerful, the new Bentley Azure T is the world’s most elegant convertible and destined to become a future classic. With unique Bentley ‘T’ styling cues reinforcing its sporting stance, the 500bhp Azure T delivers driver-focused performance with the ability to transport four adults in first-class, open-top luxury. The new Azure T, specified with the high performance version of Crewe’s iconic 6¾ litre V8 engine, is the latest in a line of Bentley models to bear the ‘T’ legend. The 1996 Continental coupe was the first modern Bentley ‘T’, followed in 2002 by the Arnage T, both flagship models with a distinctive sporting character and thunderous performance. The Azure’s already striking form is now enhanced by 20-inch 5-spoke wheels and tyres, ‘Le Mans’ front wing vents, dark tint matrix grille and a sculpted, retractable Flying ‘B’ mascot. For the performance-oriented Azure T, the twin-turbocharged V8 engine produces 500bhp and 1000 Nm of torque – an 11 per cent increase in power and a 14 per cent increase in torque over its 450bhp/875 Nm Azure stable mate. The famous Bentley wave of torque is even more prodigious than before and performance is significantly raised with a top speed of 179 mph (288 km/h) and a 0-60 mph time of just 5.2 seconds (0-100 km/h in 5.5 sec). “The new Azure T reflects our passion for creating the world’s most exhilarating and prestigious convertibles that, true to the Bentley T tradition, blend sophistication with a powerful presence,” said Stuart McCullough, Bentley sales and marketing board member.

Unique open-top experience Based on the Azure, the Azure T offers a range of discreet exterior cues that further enhance its powerful stance and hint at its increased performance potential. Key ingredients of its distinctive appearance include design features 20-inch five-spoke, two-piece alloy wheels and ‘Le Mans’ lower front wing air vents. Further distinguishing points from the Azure are standard features such as darktinted upper and lower grilles, ‘jewel’ fuel filler cap (made from billet aluminium) and door mirror mountings finished in body colour. T sports the iconic Flying ‘B’ mascot, which can retract neatly into the grille surround. Originally designed by motoring artist F. Gordon Crosby, the ‘B’ was first used on the 1930 Bentley 8-Litre. With exterior lines that echo visual elements of the Bentley Mk.6 from 1946, the Azure was enthusiastically received on its original debut as a concept car at the Los Angeles Show in January 2005. Bentley’s designers highlight the 1955 Park Ward S1 Drophead Coupé and 1995 Azure as the main influences for the current Azure and Azure T. Like the ’50s convertible, the car has a deep body with a single feature line that runs along both flanks and rises at the powerful rear haunches before spearing off at the rear of the car. Similarly, the Azure T’s fast and flowing roofline is echoed in its seven-bow canvas roof that gives the car a visible sporting profile when raised. Prominent wheel arches grace a slender, narrowing boot that results in a ‘horse shoe’ trailing edge. This elegant shape is reminiscent of the first Crewe-built Bentley, the Mk.6, and the overall effect is a subtle hint at the power and performance that lies beneath the Azure T’s bodywork. Delicate brightware detailing accentuates the flowing lines of the Azure T and this includes rear tail-lamp bezels, exhaust finishes and slender strips that run the length of the car. Significant time and effort has gone into making the Azure T’s folding roof attractive as well as highly functional. Operated hydraulically at the touch of a switch, the impressive, three-layer canvas roof is elegantly stowed beneath the rear parcel shelf in a matter of 25 seconds. Because the

roof is held in a separate well area, there is no impact on the generous boot space which was designed to hold two sets of golf clubs and hand luggage.

Effortless performance The engine and transmission of the Azure T are identical to those already employed in the high-performance Arnage T and Arnage Final Series saloons. In this specification, Bentley’s remarkable all-aluminium 6¾ litre V8 engine produces 500 bhp (507PS/373kW) and 1000 Nm (738lb ft) of torque – with over 90 per cent of that torque available between 1,800 and 3,800 rev/min – figures that ensure the signature Bentley ‘wave of torque’ delivers effortless performance for a unique opentop convertible driving experience. Each of these hand-made V8 engines comes with a black-finish air intake manifold bearing the signature of the team leader who oversaw its construction by Bentley technicians in the Crewe factory. The six-speed ZF automatic transmission ensures optimum flexibility, response and refinement. Three transmission modes (Drive, Sport and Manual) allow the driver to take full advantage of the powerful 500 bhp V8 engine. A sophisticated electronic management system provides fast yet smooth gearshifts regardless of how the car is being driven. Another important feature of the latest Azure T is the separation of the sports suspension and

Dynamic handling The Azure’s double wishbone front and rear suspension is carried over to the Azure T unaltered. Set-up and fine-tuned to give a

refined ride that best suits the character of this convertible Bentley, the system features coil springs with computer-controlled, adaptive electro-hydraulic dampers and automatic ride-height control with auto-load compensation. The Azure T’s suspension delivers impressive body control in all driving conditions, while the new five-spoke, twopiece 8.5J x 20-inch Sports alloy wheels with 255/40 ZR20 Pirelli P Zero tyres further improve handling and road holding. As an option, Azure T owners may specify an upgraded braking system with carbon/silicon carbide, cross-drilled brake ventilated discs. Measuring 420 x 40 mm (front) and 356 x 28 mm (rear), these discs are the largest fitted to any production car on sale today. With eight-piston callipers, the brakes provide impressive deceleration and also give an 8 kg reduction in unsprung weight, benefiting steering response, ride suppleness and acceleration. This lightweight braking system ensures virtually fade-free use, time after time, and superb resistance to disc distortion under high thermal conditions. Under normal use, the brake discs will last the lifetime of the car and pad life is doubled compare to the standard system. For Azure T and its Bentley stable mates, the Traction Control system is calibrated with the aim of avoiding all unnecessary reductions in engine torque. This reduces the amount of

intervention required and restores power earlier and more progressively, allowing the power of the Azure T’s V8 engine to be fully exploited. The Bentley Azure T enjoys an 11 per cent power and 14 per cent torque increase compared with Azure and the strength and stiffness of the original chassis are such that no changes were deemed necessary, as Brian Gush, Director of Powertrain and Chassis, explains.

Exquisite craftsmanship Befitting its role as a new Bentley flagship convertible, the Azure T embodies a range of standard features that were previously unavailable or only available as cost options on the Azure. The seats and door panels have Diamond Quilting, the fascia features an ‘engine-turned’ aluminium finish (reminiscent of 1920s racing Bentleys), and the instrument faces are finished in Black rather than Parchment. Bentley emblems are embroidered on the front seat backs and the rear seat centre, an iPod/USB interface is provided, while the full range of Bentley’s premium veneers is available, a knurled finish is applied to several handles and switches and a knurled, chrome gear knob is fitted. Inside, the Azure T is everything customers would expect of a bespoke Bentley, offering the highest levels of hand-craftsmanship to a small, discerning audience. The interior offers a spacious, luxurious cabin to provide the ultimate in first-class, open-top travel for four

adults. As in every Bentley, craftsmanship and bespoke finishing are to the fore. Every item of trim, be it veneer, hide or chromed bezel, uses authentic materials. Of course, the nature of a convertible means that its interior is often on display as much as its exterior and Bentley’s design team knew that the Azure T’s spacious cabin should make a strong a statement. Consequently, warm and inviting leather hide extend past the seats and onto the parcel shelf and this emphasises the dimensions of the rear compartment. A new audio head unit with larger display screen and an SD (secure digital) memory card slot instead of the single CD slot is fitted. At the rear, a new hide-covered boot rail with coordinated leather trim and a chrome strip along the top edge gives the load area a tidier, premium appearance. All Azure T models come with an iPod Interface linked to the Infotainment system, enabling customers to play their favourite music through the car’s audio system. The system is supplied with connectors for iPod, USB, Mini USB and a 3.5 mm AUX jack and includes a 12 volt power outlet for charging. As an option, Azure T buyers can specify the Naim for Bentley premium audio system. Created in partnership with Bentley by Naim Audio, a UK-based high end hi-fi manufacturer, this system features 10 speakers, a dual-channel sub-woofer and an 1100 Watt amplifier, plus eight individual DSP modes to reproduce true emotions and a ‘live’ concert-like experience. In Azure T the sub-woofers are located in the rear passenger footwells and contained within a special enclosure to ensure the sound of this pure music remains within the open cabin.

The development of the Veyron 16.4 is one of the key milestones of 21st-century automotive engineering. Volkswagen CEO Ferdinand Piëch made high demands: the designers were to revive the heritage of Ettore Bugatti with this new super sports car. Equally challenging were the impressive technical requirements the exceptional serial production vehicle had to be met: a top speed above 400 km/h and more than 1,000 HP. A truly formidable challenge. Yet the Veyron 16.4 unites the dichotomy of elegant form and high-tech function; of grace and power; and of aesthetics and safety in perfect harmony.

The Veyron’s exterior styling unobtrusively yet unmistakably quotes classic Bugatti design elements while defining its very own, modern style. Innovations for top performance, high acceleration capacity, and an extensive security system are signature elements of this super sports car. Ettore Bugatti occasionally made technical compromises for the sake of aesthetic integrity. This is the only tradition that was broken in the development of the Veyron 16.4.

Most sophisticated With its 16-cylinder four-wheel drive, the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 may well be the most

sophisticated production vehicle of all times. Most of the components tucked beneath its hood are ingenious innovations that were formerly only deemed possible by visionaries like Ferdinand Piëch. Boasting a maximum speed of more than 400 km per hour, the Veyron is unmatched in the super sports category. It offers a total of 1,001 HP, and its ample power reserves even at high speeds are the fabric of dreams for luxury-class limousines: for a constant speed of 250 km/h, the Veyron only needs 270-280 HP. This means that the seven-gear clutch transmission works with a torque of up to 1,250 Newton


meters. The Electronic Stability Program (ESP) ensures the necessary flexibility and maneuverability at any speed. The Veyron reaches velocities that would literally lift the car off the ground – if it weren’t for its ingenious aerodynamics, which keeps it firmly on the road even at full speed. Adjusting the back spoiler, reducing ground clearance, opening and closing the lids – it all adds to the perfect balance between propulsion and downforce. Such a super sports car may not seem to be brought to a halt easily, but the Veyron’s ceramic brakes slow it down faster than it can accelerate. While it takes this exceptional car only 2.5 seconds to go from 0

to 100 km/h, it needs even less time – a mere 2.3 seconds – to come to a standstill from 100 (reference point). To reduce the risk of injuries in accidents, Bugatti had a Formula 1 safety concept adapted for the Veyron. All these technical details combine to make the Veyron a truly exceptional super sports car.

Pure delight Acceleration with the Veyron means pure delight without involuntarily nodding heads. The automobile uses the same launch control technology as Formula 1 racing cars to reach maximum traction force from first to seventh gear and up to 400 km/h

maximum speed. The Veyron’s electronically controlled acceleration takes the car from standstill position beyond the 400 km/h threshold in less than one minute. Just activate launch control, engage gear, control the steering wheel, place your left foot on the brake, and keep your right foot on full throttle. If you release the brakes swiftly, you will accelerate on a par with veritable Formula 1 cars. The mighty, 1,001-horsepower sixteencylinder four-wheel drive can be felt and driven through a wide spectrum of revolutions per minute. Constant 250 km/h require only 270-280 of the Veyron’s

horsepower. More than 700 HP are continuously “on standby” for quick and fast interludes. In other words: at 1,000 rpm, only slightly above idling, the Veyron has 730 Newton meter torque available. Between 2,200 and 5,500 r.p.m., 1,250 Newton meter torque are permanently accessible. No other production vehicle has ever offered comparable torques. With this kind of power and pull, the Veyron manages racecourses as easily and competently as lonely mountain passes or rushhour traffic in Tokyo. Fastest production vehicle of all times The car documents state a maximum velocity of 407 km/h, but that’s an understatement. On April 19, 2005, inspection officials recorded a top speed average of 408.47 km/h. For years, the Bugatti engineers had worked diligently in order to push the 400 km/h boundary. No wind tunnel can simulate this velocity, which is why after each of a long series of improvements, the different ground clearance levels and the modifications of the rear fenders, spoiler and underbody were tested separately on high-speed test ranges. This ambition and diligence paid off, as the official speed measurement proves. The Veyron’s high velocity is due to the perfect combination of engine technology, consistent lightweight construction, specially developed tires, and the complex balance of propulsion and downforce. For not only the aerodynamic drag is a crucial factor at very high speeds, but also the precise adjustment of the downforce that holds the car to the road surface. And in addition to all this, the Veyron production vehicle meets the highest safety, reliability and maneuverability standards of even the most discerning drivers. To create the optimum aerodynamics, the Bugatti engineers developed three configuration modes. In standard mode, used for speeds up to 220 km/h, the rear spoiler system is completely retracted. In handling mode, used at higher velocities, the vehicles nose is pulled down and the monumental rear spoiler deployed. This produces an additional 350 kg of downforce without compromising the Veyron’s exceptional turn dynamics. And then there is the top speed mode for velocities beyond 375 km/h, which is activated before the engine is started. forming a tearing edge – thus, the Veyron is perfectly adapted for top velocities. The downforce is reduced to minimize the strain on the tires, which is already considerable. The car is held down on the road by its own weight and the downforce. The Veyron starts immediately at top speed mode, allowing only for a limited turn of the steering wheel. As soon as the driver brakes, the Veyron automatically switches to handling mode. But those who dare to accelerate consistently on a long, straight road will experience the power of the fastest production vehicle of all times.

Honda’s FC Sport is a hydrogen-powered, zero-emmission, three-seat sports car that demonstrates the design potential and flexibility of the car company’s fuel cell technology, already used in the FCX Clarity. The FC Sport, which was unveiled at the LA Auto Show in late November last year, offers a glimpse at how super cars of the future may look. The concept shows how Honda could re-invent car design rules with its fuel cell powertrain that negates the need for bulky car components like an internal combustion engine and gearbox. The FC Sport concept is a lightweight, fuel cell sports car with zero-emissions and supercar performance levels generated through a powerful electric motor and ultralow centre of gravity. Inspired by and built for people who love sports cars, it explores how to satisfy performance enthusiasts in a world beyond petrol and diesel engines. “This stunning concept is a great example of how the development of fuel cells could revolutionise car design,” said John Kingston, Government Affairs and Environment Manager, Honda (UK). “The FC Stack is smaller than your average powerplant and without the restrictions of having to accommodate a big engine and transmission, designers are free to explore much more radical styling directions to

reflect the performance of the car.” The high-powered Honda fuel cell powertrain and sleek, aerodynamic body contribute to the vehicle’s overall performance potential. Modular packaging of fuel cell components and the electric drivetrain allow for the FC Sport’s low centre of gravity, with the majority of vehicle mass distributed between the axles, creating the balanced weight distribution sought after in sports cars. The ideal placement of the Honda V-Flow fuel cell stack and related components demonstrates the benefits of a platform-specific, hydrogen-powered fuel cell powertrain. The FC Sport is designed to accommodate a custom-formed, high-power fuel cell stack, located between the rear seats, and a battery pack placed low in the middle of the vehicle. The electric motor sits just forward of the rear axle. Two fuel storage tanks, visible from above, are located above the rear axle. The location of the fuel cell components not only allows for enhanced performance but also for a large cabin by conventional supercar standards, with enough space for three people. The interior layout focuses on the driver with a racecar-like centre driving position. The enclosed canopy opens upward from the rear to allow for entry and exit. Two rear passenger seats flank the driver’s seat.

The sleek, low-profile body is designed to convey a high-tech appearance with sculpting that combines angular shapes in the front of the vehicle, tapering into geometric shapes at the rear. These hexagonal forms house cooling radiators for the fuel cell. Formula 1-style barge boards behind the front wheels enhance high speed aerodynamics and showcase the vehicle’s racing pedigree as do the hydrogen storage tanks, visible from the rear deck. The Glacier White body colour illustrates the FC Sport’s clean environmental credentials while the contrasting dark wheels and deeply tinted glass symbolise the vehicle’s unique combination of clean power and high performance. Green construction techniques further contribute to a reduced carbon footprint. An organic, bio-structure theme is carried through to the body construction where exterior panels are intended to use plantderived bio-plastics. At present, the Honda FC Sport is a design study model, and there are no plans for it to enter production. Honda has no plans to replace the FCX Clarity – the world’s first fuel cell production car already on sale in the US – but is exploring what could happen in years to come. The FC Sport concept was developed at the Advanced Design Studio of Honda R&D Americas, in Pasadena, California.

Chrysler eco Voyager gives a travel experience at par with a private jet, but without a lot of fancy gadgetry

Chrysler’s concept for 2008 – the ecoVoyager – marries an elegant American design with fuel cell Range-extended Electric Vehicle technology. “The 2008 Chrysler ecoVoyager concept vehicle celebrates the romance of automobile travel embodied in a four-door, four-passenger, distinctively American automobile of spirited design,” said Greg Howell, principal ecoVoyager concept exterior designer. “While the ecoVoyager’s supple, flowing one-box shape is purposely designed to achieve aerodynamic efficiencies, it also pushes the Chrysler brand language in a new direction of ‘elegant simplicity,’ by taking full advantage of the space normally occupied by a bulky conventional powertrain setup to drastically reduce the front overhang.” Featuring crisscrossing forms defined by hard lines with fluid intersections, the style vocabulary of the ecoVoyager embodies Chrysler’s harmonisation of functional technology with beautifully-styled exteriors and interiors. The Chrysler ecoVoyager concept was developed for customers wanting a travel experience on par with a private jet, but without a lot of fancy gadgetry. These customers seek three critical attributes: elegance, simplicity and serenity.

Technology The all-new Chrysler ecoVoyager’s wheels are driven by an electric motor, with power primarily supplied by a lithium-ion battery pack capable of satisfying a consumer’s typical daily commute of less than 40 miles. The electric motor develops 200 kilowatts (268

horsepower), enabling acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in less than eight seconds. A regenerative braking system captures energy that would normally be lost and returns it to the battery, making the Chrysler ecoVoyager concept a very efficient and spacious vehicle. The ecoVoyager takes advantage of a range extender – in this case, a small, advanced hydrogen fuel cell -- for occasional long trips. With this advanced technology, the Chrysler ecoVoyager’s total range is greater than 300 miles, while no emissions – besides water vapour -- come from the tailpipe along the way. With the entire propulsion system located below the ecoVoyager’s floor, space is maximized for utility of passenger and cargo.

Exterior Expressive details of the Chrysler ecoVoyager concept include panoramic roof glass bisected by a centre spine, tight body overhangs and a dramatic boat-tail back end. The sinuous shapes of the window graphics, headlamps, tail lamps and grille openings are inspired by Chrysler’s storied winged badge. The curving trapezoidal shape of the ecoVoyager’s grille is echoed by the clear lens-covered shadow box that houses the rear license plate. The sloping backlight features a similar shape, emphasizing the repeating harmony of the ecoVoyager’s design elements. Other exterior touches on the Chrysler ecoVoyager concept include the elongated, flaring “light catchers” on the lower doors and the front and rear fascias, enhanced by the Polar Ice exterior colour. Finally, side doors open a wide 90 degrees. Since the rear doors are hinged at the rear and there is no centre B-pillar, entrance into the ecoVoyager is virtually unimpeded.

Interior By placing the front wheels of the Chrysler ecoVoyager concept farther forward than usual, designers were able to create greater interior roominess and increased legroom, especially in the rear seats. In the ecoVoyager’s spacious interior, the size, design and location of all controls have been rethought to provide its four pampered passengers the luxury of having every feature within effortless reach. “In some ways, true luxury is in not having to reach or search around for controls,” said Ty Stump, principal interior designer of the Chrysler ecoVoyager concept. “With the new ecoVoyager concept, we carefully placed the gauges and controls in order to reduce head and eye movement. We also achieved simplicity in the interior forms, both for visual elegance and to avoid distracting surfaces.” The ecoVoyager’s windshield defroster and cabin airconditioning outlets in the instrument panels and doors, for example, are invisible beneath a recessed perforated mesh. This avoids visually-disruptive array sliding vanes and protruding knobs. Even the colour of the interior -- soft Dove Gray with warm cherry wood accents — is designed to promote a relaxed ambiance. The Chrysler ecoVoyager’s unconventional instrument panel features a broad, leathercovered angled surface, slightly V-shaped in plan view and fronted by a full-width display screen set just below the windshield. The left and right outer ends of this non-glare screen contain the side-view mirror image, while a third camera image in front of the driver serves as the rear-view mirror. Unlike most instrument clusters, only currently-needed information is displayed,

designed to be viewed above the steering wheel rim rather than through it (and requiring less up-down eye movement and refocusing). The front-seat passenger can view a movie without its moving images disturbing the driver. A slick, slide-out/ retractable centre console – fitted with hot-key buttons and a mouse pad – replaces the functions contained in a conventional vertical centre stack. The ecoVoyager’s four individual chairs are contoured for personalised comfort. The seat framing is exposed, with underseat storage drawers. Front seats have individual cantilevered, adjustable armrests containing the window controls and heat/

massage switches, while individual rearseat armrests fold into the cabin back panel. With the ability to store six 20-ounce bottles, the floor console dividing the rear seats accommodates hot or cold beverages. A recessed area in the headliner between the two longitudinal skylights contains the “Direct Sound” function. With this feature, the musical entertainment choice of each individual occupant can be directed to him or her without the use of headphones, and without disturbing others in the car. Sleek, refined, efficient and superbly comfortable, the Chrysler ecoVoyager concept vehicle offers a new experience in stress-free travel.

control by preventing the wheels locking up, as well as (in most cases) reducing overall stopping distances. The system uses the same sensors as the ECC control unit to measure the rotation speed of each wheel and, when the ABS control unit activates the system, it adjusts the hydraulic pressure at each wheel, allowing them to rotate, but not to lock up, ensuring the driver can always steer. Also standard on all models is a version of the ABS system designed specifically for off-road use. This takes advantage of the fact that, on loose surfaces such as gravel, sand and mud, braking distances are shorter if a car’s wheels lock up, ploughing through the surface and building up a ‘wedge’ in front of the wheels, which helps to slow the car. With conventional ABS, the wheels would not lock up, so the wedge could not form, and stopping distances would be longer. To activate this system, the driver needs to take no direct action. The wheel sensors include a rough road sensor, and when they recognise the kind of oscillation that can only result from being off-road, the system is automatically triggered. Likewise, when the driver selects the 4WD off-road mode by flicking the switch on the centre console, the system is automatically triggered, allowing more sustained lock-up on these ‘ploughable’ surfaces.

Electronic Roll Mitigation The vehicles’ ESP system which is likewise a standard feature, helps prevent the car from rolling over by limiting violent manoeuvres; the ERM, on the other hand, goes one stage further by aiming to prevent the wheels from lifting from the road in an even more extreme situation. When a car turns suddenly, most of the cornering loads go onto the outside front wheel, and this weight is increased further because of the body roll that naturally occurs at the same time. In an extreme situation, because of the position of the car’s centre of gravity, the two inside wheels can lift off the ground, causing the car to roll as it ‘trips’ over the front wheel. To counteract this, ERM brakes the outside wheel – nearly to the point of locking up, but not quite – to cause it to slip, because a tyre in slip cannot support such high cornering loads. As a result, the car’s path becomes straighter, reducing the cornering loads and preventing a rollover.

Valve Timing (VVT), which helps optimise the torque curve at all speeds. The 2.0-litre engine is a state-of-the-art, direct-injection turbo diesel power plant with high-pressure fuel injection, a variable geometry turbocharger and four valves per cylinder. The injectors are electronically controlled, leading to high power and torque and optimal fuel efficiency. The turbo diesel engine positions the Jeep Patriot competitively in its class for power, torque, top speed, acceleration, towing capacity and fuel economy. Maximum power is 138 bhp, and peak torque is 310 Nm (229 lb.-ft.).

Engineering When developing Jeep® Patriot, engineers used high-strength, lightweight and soundabsorbent materials to create a safe, quiet body structure that is designed to both meet impact performance criteria and be durable enough to be a Jeep. Jeep Patriot’s unitised body includes a structural safety cage to provide excellent occupant protection. While the Patriot underbody architecture is shared with Dodge Caliber for platform compatibility, the Patriot has been modified to make it uniquely Jeep. Engineers validated the durability of the Jeep Patriot’s body structure through stateof-the-art computer simulation, an extensive battery of laboratory fatigue tests, road-test simulation and real-time Proving Ground tests. This extensive testing ensures that the Patriot’s body structure is durable enough to withstand the wear and tear that comes with a minimum of 100,000 miles of driving and at least 10 years of salt-belt corrosion.

AL ATTIYAH RETAINS DUBAI RALLY TITLE

Qatar’s Nasser Al Attiyah won the Dubai International Rally for the second year in succession to round off another triumphant FIA Middle East Championship campaign. Partnered by British co-driver Chris Patterson in a Subaru Impreza, Al Attiyah emerged from a fascinating battle with the UAE’s Sheikh Khalid Al Qassimi to take victory by a margin of 3 mins. 42 secs. in the seventh and final round of the regional series. It would have been much closer but for a puncture which destroyed Sheikh Khalid’s challenge on the final special stage of the event this afternoon after he had closed to within 17 seconds Al Attiyah to potentially set up a dramatic finish. Sheikh Abdullah Al Qassimi, brother of Sheikh Khalid, took third place ahead of Oman’s Nizar Al Shanfari. Lebanon’s Roger Feghali in a Mitsubishi Evo 9 and the UAE’s Sheikh Suheil Al Maktoum in a City of Arabia Subaru Impreza completed the top six. Despite going out of the rally on the final leg with mechanical problems, Qatar’s Misfer Al Marri claimed runner’s up spot in the Middle East Championship, just edging out Lebanese driver Nick Georgiou, who retired on the penultimate stage, and Al Shanfari. Al Attiyah, who had clinched his fourth successive Middle East title in Cyprus earlier in the month, had to be at his best to see off the challenge of Sheikh Khalid who had returned from World Rally Championship duty with Team Abu Dhabi.
