Car Xpress
Intro Welcome to the Car Xpress Car Buyers’ Annual for 2008 This is our comprehensive guide to all the cars in the region, which are available either now or in the very near future. We haven’t featured every single model variant - there is only so much paper in the Middle East! - but where they exist, we’ve suggested you contact the relevant dealer for more in-depth details. The first thing you will notice about this guide is that we’ve avoided listing the cars by manufacturer. Instead, we’ve presented them within their appropriate class, which is further divided taking into consideration factors like price range, street cred, and desirability and so on. A model’s most popular body style is featured, with the rest mentioned alongside. For instance, the Nissan Tiida and Chevrolet Optra are available in both hatchback and sedan variants, but the former is included in the hatch segment while the latter is featured in the sedan segment. Hatchback Sedan SUV Why have we done this?
We know that whenever we want to buy a car we rarely know exactly which make or model to choose, or indeed, which one we should choose because of its superior qualities or pricing. By presenting the different makes and models side-by-side, you can compare them more easily. And even if you do have a specific model in mind, you can use the index to locate it and then compare it to its competitors which may possibly be more suited to your requirements, and which you may not even have known were available in the region. Where possible, we have presented a short ‘resume’ of each car’s most useful specifications Engine size (cubic capacity) Power (bhp) Torque (lb-ft) Transmission Acceleration (0-100kph) Top speed (kph) Economy (lt/100km) And, as an extra helping hand, whenever there is a vehicle that we have road tested and has proved to be outstanding in some or several aspects, we have given it a ‘Car Xpress Super model’ rating. We have not given prices for any of the vehicles - even though that may have figured in our appraisal of our choice of ‘Super model’ - as these vary a great deal throughout the region from country to country, and from month to month. Dealers also frequently offer purchasing incentives which we can’t take into account. We hope you find this guide a useful introduction to help you with your next car purchase. Safe driving!

Glossary of terms: We have attempted to list the most commonly used acronyms in the industry today. You’ll see that while most are generic terms, a few are brand-specific, like BMW’s SMG and Volkswagen’s DSG. Explaining each one of them is beyond the scope of this guide, but you can always contact your local dealer for further information on any particular technology.

People buy hatchbacks for various reasons: they can’t be bothered lifting stuff over the lip of the trunk, they prefer the aerodynamic shape, they like the fact that the rear window is the back of the car, or they don’t particularly like putting their toy poodle in the trunk. Hatchbacks also tend to be very stable because there is no overhang past the rear wheels. Whatever you reason for looking in this section, you won’t be disappointed by what’s on offer in the region. It has to be said that there are very few American hatchbacks (as opposed to combis) over here, so most models are very European in terms of style, and you don’t get more European than the stunning looks of the Alfa Romeo 147 GTA. At the other end of the scale, and the price range, is the Suzuki Liana, which, even so, is no less versatile and occupant-friendly. For most people, choosing a hatchback is also a matter of economy, with many models being able to return between 4.5 and 8 litres per 100km. Naturally, the hot-hatches like to guzzle a little more, but by sedan standards they are still the supermodels of the car world.

Chery QQ
Looking more or less like Daewoo’s Matiz, the little QQ is Chinese manufacturer Chery’s interpretation of a micro city runabout. Available with a 1.1-litre or an ultra-frugal 800cc 3-cylinder, the QQ lets buyers choose between a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic transmission. The front and rear seats are double track and can be adjusted synchronously in the four directions. The separate back seats are independently reversible.

Interestingly, the Chery website emphasises “The doors and windows can be easily closed and opened to guarantee your safety and give you the most fantastic view during the delightful journey”. Even the rear view mirrors are “delicately designed with a sense of motion bringing you the best rear views”. Interesting touches, there!
Chevrolet Aveo
The Chevrolet Aveo is a surprisingly roomy and refined entry-level car that delivers surprising little extras that make a big difference. Available as a 5-door hatch and compact sedan, the Aveo comes at a rather affordable price. Features for all models include a 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmission, air-conditioning with cabin-air filtration, power steering, AM/FM stereo, six-way adjustable driver seat, rear-window demister, engine immobilizer, remote fuel door and a practical 60/40 split-bench rear seat that folds for more cargo room. 10 Annual Guide

The Spark is Chevrolet’s foray into the mini-car segment, and comes in two variants - 0.8-litre and 1.0-litre. Offering a comparatively large amount of space and feeling of roominess, the new Spark could well be the perfect choice for young first-time owners looking for the greater freedom and fun that having your own car allows. The rear seats can be split 60/40 and the interior offers a number of clever storage locations, with shelves, trays, bottle and canholders. Chevrolet have not skimped on safety features either, with driver, passenger and side airbags, head restraints for all five seats, pretensioners, belt force limiters in the front and the latest generation four-channel ABS brakes from Bosch.

The Citroën C2 is a compact 3-door hatch that can seat four adults. Since its launch in September 2003, the range widened with a sportier C2 VTS with a 1.6-litre 125bhp engine and 5-speed manual transmission. The C2 boasts two sliding, independent rear seats designed to fold down easily, and a tailgate that opens in two sections so that the boot can be accessed in all circumstances even when limited space is available. Successor to the angular Punto is the larger and equally stylish - though in a curvy feminine sort of way – Grande Punto. The chic supermini has received rave reviews from the press and the public since its worldwide launch, and might well be on its way to the Middle East. Two engine options, 1.2 and 1.4-litre, are likely to be mated to 5-speed manual and automated manual transmissions. A decent equipment list is expected, including electric windows, airbags and ABS. Expected to be available in 3 and 5-door versions, the tidy handler should be on the list of those looking for a small hatch with some Italian flair.
Citroen C3
The C3, since its introduction here, has offered major innovation within its segment, in terms of architecture and high-end specifications. The range has been expanded and currently a range of engines, including four petrols and two diesels are available here. Body styles include the SUV-inspired C3 X-TR as well as a sporty 3-door coupe-convertible, the C3 Pluriel. The contribution of efficient electronic management, combined with well-chosen gear ratios has significantly boosted the performance of the range, while maintaining very low fuel consumption. 12 Annual Guide

The funky C4 is available in 3-door and 5-door versions. Besides the new-generation engines and interesting styling, the C4 offers a comprehensive list of equipment as well as modern driving aids. The innovative Lane Departure Warning System warns the driver on motorways and main roads if the car crosses the lane markings, unless he has activated the indicator. Xenon dual-function directional headlamps - a feature usually seen on higherend vehicles - make their appearance on the C4. Driving comfort is further enhanced by the speed limiter and low tyre-pressure warning system, two features rarely seen in this segment.
Dodge Caliber
Dodge enters the hatchback segment with the SUV-inspired Caliber, a bold and muscular five-door with the brand’s trademark crosshair grille. Three engines are offered here, including a 1.8 and 2.0-litre motor, as is a smooth Continuously Variable Transmission. Following the norm with practical hatchbacks, the Caliber features a number of storage areas as well as front and rear seats that can be folded flat. Standard and optional highlights include variable height seating, beverage cooler, Boston Acoustics speakers, leather interiors, front and side airbags, alloy wheels and ABS.

Daihatsu Charade
The entry-level Daihatsu, available only as a five-door hatchback, offers decent equipment and performance for the money. The Charade’s interior gets a seat slide mechanism, tilt steering wheel, driver’s seat height adjustment and adjustable seatbelt anchors. The compact body permits a 157-litre luggage-carrying capacity while the split rear seats fold independently to accommodate a variety of cargo needs.

Attention has been turned to the engine and suspension to provide for a reasonably refined ride, while the 8.4-metre minimum turning circle makes it easy to navigate narrow roads, turn tight corners, and manoeuvre into small parking spaces.
Daihatsu Materia
Daihatsu’s wild-looking Materia reminds us of Toyota’s hip Scion xB, with its boxy looks and sharp edges. Recently introduced in the region, it’s available with 1.3 and 1.5-litre engines, accompanied by 4-speed automatic and 5-speed manual transmissions. The interior is dominated by a centrally-mounted instrument cluster, à la Toyota Yaris, and boasts a number of storage spaces and aesthetic touches like illuminated door speakers and door trim. Comfort features include tiltable steering wheel, seat height adjuster and adjustable seatbelt anchors. Airbags, VSC (Vehicle Stability Control), ABS, EBD and Traction Control are some of the safety features available in the Materia. 14 Annual Guide

Daihatsu’s current Sirion is a lot more sharply styled than the old model and is packed with features like a CD player, electric windows and air conditioning as standard. Thanks to clever computer-aided design, the car’s safety features now include side-impact beams to defend against collisions from all angles. Front disc brakes and rear drums are assisted by ABS. Able to seat five at a push, there is plenty of headroom both front and rear, although legroom is somewhat restricted for longer journeys. The rack and pinion steering is light and a tight turning circle allows for ease of manoeuvrability.

Ford Focus
The Focus has always fulfilled its role in the family car niche perfectly well. The latest models, which include 3-door and 5-door hatchbacks as well as a sedan and 5-door wagon, are the result of Ford’s Global Shared Technologies initiative, and have taken elements from Ford’s partners – namely the Volvo S40/V50, the Mazda 3 and Ford’s own C-Max – to produce a stunning, solid and characterful car with some of the highest Euro NCAP ratings of any vehicle in this or other classes.

For 2007, the Focus has been upgraded with freshened-up interiors and new exterior colours. Three engines are available in the region, along with a choice of manual and auto ‘boxes. An affordable sport-styled family car with a brilliant engine, outstanding balance and handling, the little Ford offers buyers good value for money.
Hafei Lobo
According to the website, the Lobo - meaning ‘treasure on the road’ - is designed by none other than the house of Pininfarina. In case you didn’t know, Hafei goes on to say Pininfarina even does designs for Ferrari and Maserati! The little Chinese hatch looks quite contrived inside and out, and features a tiny motor which the company claims is good enough for 5lt/100km. 16 Annual Guide

With a body shape that dates back to 1994, the Punto has much more modern lines than its forebears and features an angular tailend. It comes in a ‘please all’ selection of 23 derivatives, six levels of interior spec, and a choice of five petrol and diesel engines (including the 1.3 and 1.9 Multijet diesels). The smallest 1.2-litre produces just 60bhp while the 1.8-litre engine pushes out 130bhp. Most models offer a choice of manual and automatic gearboxes (which feature a manual/sequential select mode). Top of the range models also come with electric windows, airbags, cruise control, trip computer, and Fiat’s Dualdrive variable powerassisted steering.
Ford Fiesta
As popular as ever, the Fiesta features a tidy conservative interior, with very good ergonomics for passenger comfort and safety, and a stylish exterior housing a range of willing engines. The taller body shape allows for much more room, with the 5-door being the better choice for tall rear-seat passengers. All models feature two airbags (with side curtain airbags as an option), deadlocks, central locking, CD player, electric front windows and intelligent wipers.

Honda Jazz
There is no doubt about the cleverness of the Jazz, especially in terms of its use of space, with the modern design allowing for remarkably good head and rear legroom (for example, the fuel tank was moved both to permit greater cabin space and to give the tank better protection).

As can be expected, the 1.5-litre Honda motor isn’t thirsty, but nippy and quick of the mark, making it a lot of fun to drive and not too noisy as a result of efficient insulation. Standard features include driver and passenger airbags, anti-lock brakes, CD player and Honda’s own “Magic Seats”.
Hyundai Atos Prime
The Atos Prime is Hyundai’s entry-level offering here. With its tallish stance, the tiny Korean does seem to offer decent room for its size. Available in 1.0 and 1.1-litre guise, with a choice of manual and automatic transmissions, the Atos lays claim to excellent fuel economy. Prices are rock bottom and, unsurprisingly, features and equipment are sparse; you do get air conditioning and a cassette player as standard, while the better-specced variants get power windows and an airbag for the driver. 18 Annual Guide

It also comes with an industry leading warranty.
Hyundai Matrix
The Matrix has a very European look, drafted as it was by the renowned Italian automotive designer, Pininfarina. It is not only stylish on the outside. The interior is spacious, aided by the light from the sunroof, you have very good visibility, and there are no less than 10 separate stowage solutions. The gauge cluster is in the centre of the upper dash. While ABS is standard, traction and directional control systems and dual front and side airbags are optional. Split/fold rear seats, electric front windows and remote locking are other features. The 2.0-litre DOHC engine under the bonnet of the Cerato makes for a lively drive, with top speeds in the region of 200kph.
Kia Rio
Only the Rio name remains from the previous incarnation of this mini (that drives like a supermini). It has stylish looks, 29% more luggage space, a choice of perky diesel and petrol engines and a great standard equipment list including air con, ABS with EBD, twin front airbags, power steering, remote central locking, alarm, front electric windows and a CD player with MP3 compatibility. And there has been no compromise made on safety either. Holding a 4-star EuroNCAP rating for front and side impact crash safety and a 3-star rating for pedestrian safety in a crash, the Rio is a worthy competitor to the Clio and Fiesta at the larger end of the small car market.

Safety features include ABS (with EBD), dual front airbags, seatbelt pretensioners and threepoint seatbelts all round as standard.
Nissan Tiida
Nissan’s Tiida attempts to bridge the gap between buyers seeking Japanese efficiency and those chasing Euro chic, and the company plans to go straight to the top of the small car sales charts in the GCC with the launch of its compact duo that delivers interior roominess, high quality interiors and comfortable stressfree environment. The Tiida hatchback and sedan became instant best-sellers when first introduced in their homeland, proving that automotive rules can be broken by creating a small car that has the spaciousness, the comfort, and the luxury of a full-size upper-end sedan.

The Tiida brings unprecedented style and comfort to a traditionally price-driven market segment where the bare essentials have been the dominant characteristics. Interior fit and finish reflect the Tiida’s Japanese origins and there’s a real sheen of quality to the interior.

Peugeot 206
The diesel and turbodiesel engines of the 206 range – from the frugal 1.4-litre to the zippy-2.0 litre – are some of the best in the class, with the petrol versions delivering the power smoothly and efficiently. The 2.0-litre models come equipped with either manual or auto Tiptronic transmission. Derivatives, which include a 3-door and 5-door hatchback as well as a 2-door coupe-convertible, have a welltuned chassis and the more powerful models are very responsive. Standard features on all models include power steering, electric windows and mirrors, and passenger and driver’s airbag. Side airbags are optional as is ABS. However, the cabin is still of high quality and ergonomically well-designed, and the Corsa features a range of both active and passive safety features, giving it a 4-star EuroNCAP rating. With an improved chassis and transmission, Speed Sensitive Power Steering, four engine choices and one of the lowest servicing and running costs for its class, the little Corsa may well be worth considering.
Peugeot 207
The 207 has been a European staple in the hatchback segment for many years, which in itself says bundles about the popularity and functionality of this model. The 207 is available in 7 variants depending on how racy you want to be. The 207 Urban is the basic model with a 90bhp 1.4-litre engine and 5-speed manual gearbox, while the RC is the boy-racer version (see Hot Hatches section). Also available as a convertible in the guise of the ‘CC’ model, and in either 3-door or 5-door, the 207 certainly has choice, if you are looking for a nippy and stylish little runabout.

The Gen-2 sits on a mostly Malaysiandeveloped platform and employs an engine – named CamPro – co-developed with none other than Lotus, which is owned by Proton. Both the exterior and interior styling is an acquired taste, looking more like a 90’s design rather than anything contemporary. Then again, it’s cheap to buy, cheap to run and gives you decent safety kit as standard.
Proton Savvy
The Savvy’s funky exterior styling reflects Proton’s idea of the ultimate city car. Small on the outside, this perky little thing affords decent space for passengers and their shopping bags. Suzuki Swift
Suzuki’s new global car, the Swift is aimed at the likes of the Peugeot 206 and the Opel Corsa. While some may criticize it for drawing too much from the MINI design book, the Swift does in fact stand out on its own. The blackedout A- and B-pillars, along with what Suzuki refers to as a 1.5 box design, definitely marks the little Swift out in the supermarket parking lot. A sporty 3-spoke steering wheel dominates the sophisticated yet functional cabin, which is well-built and feels nice to the touch. The hightech 1.5-litre motor makes for a spirited drive and well suits the tidy handling characteristics of the Swift.

Volkswagen Golf Twincharger
Worth a mention all on its own is the fact that VW have produced a tidy 1.4-litre dualturbocharged FSI engine that combines the advantages of a turbo diesel with those of a petrol engine and squeezed it into a Golf. Both a mechanical compressor and a turbocharger generate maximum power and torque throughout the rev range while keeping fuel consumption to a minimum. The new Twincharger or GT Sport is an example of how Volkswagen’s FSI technology (direct petrol injection) can be developed to provide driving fun and improve efficiency. The powerful boost provided by the compressor in the low rev ranges is amazing. At higher revs, the turbocharger takes over. The Twincharger achieves the torque development of a large naturally aspirated engine, but with much lower consumption values.

The sedan market in the Middle East has always been very important alongside that of the SUV, and for several reasons. Most sedan buyers want a car that is large enough for the family, comfortable enough for granny, possibly has a choice of luxury options, and that has relatively good economy. All the cars in this category need to be able to seat two adults and three children, they also need to have adequate storage space and be primarily designed for road use. Sedan buyers also want to retain a degree of sophistication when climbing in and out of their means of transport that is often not an option with the elevated floorpan of the SUV. The choice of sedans that are now available to the discerning buyer is immense: in engine capacities, styles, performance, luxury and price. Ranging from the diminutive Suzuki Liana and the budget Chery Eastar, to the Jaguar S Type R and the Rolls Royce Phantom. And that choice is made no less difficult by the Korean invasion in the shape of Hyundai and Kia, who are both producing high quality, spacious and affordable competition to the well-established Toyotas, Hondas, Fords and Chevys. Keep an eye out as well for the Chinese who are coming to the table with some very competitively priced models. With the sedan segment always representing a huge chunk of over-all sales – thus making the competition between manufacturers extremely vigorous – it means that if you shop around, you can really hit upon some great deals – and besides, you’re in the Middle East, so haggle!

Jaguar’s performance version of the flagship S-Type saloon goes about business with a stonking 400bhp motor. OK, so you don’t want just an A to B mode of transport. You want something that offers you that extra bit of functionality that enhances your lifestyle. Whether that is being able to take you into the wilderness at weekends, taxi-ing your extended family from mall to mall or lugging your jet skis to the beach or camel feed to the racecourse, most manufacturers will be able to offer you a vehicle to fulfil your needs. While the MPV market may seem to have stagnated a little as the 7-seater SUV has made its presence felt, there are still a choice of ‘people carriers’ that offer the comfort, space, elegance and economy you don’t get with an SUV. Having said that, with so much opportunity to go off-road in this region – even if it’s only on to the beach – the 4x4 has to be a serious consideration for the adventurous. And just flicking through the pages of our SUV section will show that there is no greater choice than that available in this segment, from the traditional workhorse Nissan Patrol to the funky new Toyota FJ Cruiser, to the sleek Porsche Cayenne Turbo S and bespoke craftsmanship of the Spyker D12.

Dodge Nitro
The Dodge Nitro is a bit of a Kinder egg surprise when it comes to exterior design with large masses of plastic and an uninspiring grille. But on the inside it is a rather versatile space thanks to the fold-flat front passenger seat and the patented ‘Load N Go’ flooring in the rear of the cabin which can be slide through the tailgate opening for ease of loading. It is not really designed for serious off-roading but more for urban utility, especially as it only comes with a 5-speed auto box and no low gear option or four wheel drive. The 60-year heritage of 4x4 leadership is the driving force behind the designers and engineers who developed the new Jeep Cherokee. It is taller than its predecessor yet has lost none of its abilities to tackle the roughest of terrain and the steepest of hills. The Cherokee received a mid-life revision last year, in which it received a new IS 43 suspension system, a choice of two 4-wheel drive systems and two powerful engines.
Jeep Commander
The Commander has often been referred to as a 4x4 hearse because of its large tail and the amount of glass behind the driver’s seat, but this makes for a capacious rear storage area and the ability to seat 7 passengers in three rows, although the last row positioned over the rear axle has no lowered floorpan for your legs. Kia sales executives told us six months ago that demand for this mid-size off-roader is far outstripping supply. We checked last month and the story is still the same. Kia underwent a major transformation in the run up to winning the contract to be FIFA’s automotive partner for the 2006 World Cup Finals in Germany, and the Sportage is one of its models that are reaping the benefits. The Sportage comes either as a full time 4X4 or in 2-wheel drive. Toyota Land Cruiser In this region the major competition among the Japanese full-size SUVs has been between the Land Cruiser and the Nissan Patrol. These are the two that you will still be comparing if you are a serious buyer in this segment. The Land Cruiser began its life as a strong, reliable workhorse and has gradually become a prestigious family 4WD known for its strength, reliability and comfort. The 2007 year model features a series of internal and external improvements and developments. Externally, it is distinguished from the previous generation by a new headlamp design, a new radiator grille, new cladding sticker design, new coloured side step end cover, and new alloy wheels. The models have also been upgraded. The GXR now features full-time 4WD, previously available only in the VXR range. Touch-screen voice navigation with a rear-view camera and Bluetooth capability have been introduced in the top of the range VXR model, and a new keyless entry system is now available in both the GXR and VXR. 140 Annual Guide
