Motormouth So, will she or won’t she? Hold your breath. This year’s exclusive Ferrari Leggenda e Passione auction in Maranello, Italy has the motoring world kicking with excitement. To be held on May 17th, the event will highlight the 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa, the most significant and desirable Ferrari, which is expected to set a new world record for a vintage motor car sold at an auction. The current world record is held by RM Auctions, in association with Sotheby’s, for a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyder (s/n 2377GT), which sold for US$10.89 million (€7.04 million; £5.60 million). This current world record was set also at the famed Ferrari Leggenda e Passione, in Maranello on May 18, 2008. Considered one of the most alluring, competitive and iconic of all Ferrari racing cars, the beautiful and immediately recognizable Scaglietti-designed, “pontoon-fender” 250 TR was produced from 1957 to 1958 during which only 22 were constructed. Know more about the 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa in this edition’s Classic Car section. **** Car Xpress got word that talks were ongoing to open a Middle East dealership for the stunning Aspid. Boy oh boy! This supercar, which can take off from 0 to 160kph in 5.6 seconds and return to a standstill in just 3.1 seconds, is every car lover’s dream. Much of this performance results from the installation of a supercharged 2-litre engine delivering 400bhp into a vehicle with a kerb weight of just 740kg, resulting in a very high powerto-weight ratio. (More about the Aspid in this edition’s Special Car section.) And she’s coming here? Hold your breath. **** Check this out. Citroën’s concept car, which was presented in last year’s Paris Motor Show, is really something—it broke the barrier; it crossed over from the realm of imagination to a snarling mean machine raring for the road, from the digital world to the real world. The car is the result of a partnership between Citroën and Polyphony, designer of the driving simulation game Gran Turismo 5 on Playstation 3. In the game, GTbyCITROËN, the concept car, features an electric drive train powered by a fuel cell with no pollutant emissions. It is a car designed to square up to the strongest competition. Kazanori Yamauchi, president of Polyphony Digital Inc. and creator of Gran Turismo, could not have put it more aptly when he said GTbyCITROËN shows how the worlds of virtual and real-life motoring can join together to create a truly innovative partnership. To see the car take shape in a digital game then for real has been a truly unique experience, he says. See more of this mindblower in this edition’s Concept Car section.

At the launching were Simon Frith, managing director, Al-Futtaim Motors; Hugh Dickerson, general manager, Sales and marketing; and Motoharu Araya, chief engineer from the Toyota Vehicle Development Centre in Japan, who led the team that developed the new Sequoia. “Whilst the global economic downturn has had a significant impact on the automotive sector in the UAE, there is still consumer demand for new vehicles,” Frith said. He added, “Although the last 3 months have been challenging, I am very pleased to report that our Toyota sales in 2008 were 23% higher than in 2007. This…mirrors the Toyota Motor Corporation’s recent success in becoming the world’s top selling auto manufacturer. The introduction of the new Sequoia will enable us to provide even more choices to UAE motorists, and further strengthen our market leadership of the large SUV segment. It is the first of several new vehicles that we will launch this year, evidence of Toyota’s commitment to continued investment in product research
and development and meeting the changing needs of motorists.” Araya, for his part, explained that he and his team had conducted extensive research in the large US and Middle East markets on the needs of SUV owners, prior to developing the new Sequoia. The Sequoia has a newly-developed 5.7 litre V8 engine, with a smooth new 6-speed Sequential Shiftmatic transmission, and a new platform. The Sequoia’s responsive 5.7 litre V8 Dual VVT-i engine is the largest and most powerful in it’s class, effortlessly delivering a maximum output of 381HP at 5600 rpms, and a maximum torque off 55.5kg-m. It delivers class-leading standing-start and passing acceleration, excellent fuel efficiency and low emissions. A new platform was specifically designed for the Sequoia to ensure class-leading handling stability and ride comfort and to reliably transmit the massive torque of the large engine to the road, and was tuned to meet the road conditions in the Middle East. The Sequoia is available in three models the SR5, Limited and Platinum, with 8 and 7 seat models, with prices ranging from AED 149,000 to AED 215,000. New Porsche 911 GT3 to debut in Geneva
The new Porsche 911 GT3, which will make its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show on March 3, 2009, is the latest evolution of an iconic sports car. Embodying the essence of more than 23,000 Porsche racing victories, the 911 GT3 is the ultimate integration of driver and car and arrives in the UK this autumn. In developing the second generation of the Type 997 911 GT3 into the most sporting and dynamic road-going 911 ever with a naturally-aspirated power unit, Porsche has applied a wide range of know-how gained in motor sport. Indeed, this is precisely why the new GT3 is truly impressive not only on the road, but also on the race track. The 911 GT3 offers an even higher standard above all in two key areas: performance and driving dynamics. The proven six-cylinder naturally aspirated power unit now develops a maximum output of 435 hp (320 kW), up 20 hp over its predecessor. This results first and foremost from an increase in engine capacity by 200 cc to 3.8-litres and from improved cylinder head gas flow: now not only the intake, but for the first time also the exhaust camshafts, are adjusted by VarioCam. A further important point is that, through its upgraded power and performance, the flat six boxer engine also offers a significant increase in torque at medium engine speeds, a benefit of particular significance in everyday motoring. Clearly, this also means a further improvement in performance; the new GT3 accelerates from a standstill to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 4.1 seconds and reaches 99 mph (160 km/h) in 8.2 seconds. Top speed is 194 mph. 18 March 2009 Car Xpress
Citroën DS voted most beautiful car
What’s the most beautiful car of all time? A multi-million pound Ferrari or the curvy Jaguar E-type perhaps? No, it is now officially Citroën’s humble DS, the car most famous for saving President De Gaulle from assassination. That was the verdict when Classic & Sports Car magazine polled a jury of the world’s leading car designers to nominate the most gorgeous cars ever. The 20-strong panel ranged from Car designer of the century, Giorgetto Giugiaro—the man behind the Maserati Bora, VW Golf, Fiat Panda and Lotus Esprit—to current Jaguar director of design Ian Callum, and each picked their top three beauties. Although Ferrari secured the most votes as a marque, they were spread across nine different models, leaving the Citroën to scoop the honours as the single most beautiful classic. With its name derived from Déesse (French for Goddess), this innovative design was styled by Italian sculptor Flaminio Bertoni and launched in 1955. The futuristic shape was an instant design classic and over the next 20 years more than 1.5 million cars were sold in a range of specifications. But it wasn’t just the shape that revolutionised automotive design: the complex self-levelling suspension, plus powered steering, clutch and brakes were otherwordly compared to rival cars of the era. While regarded today as a technical masterpiece – and a potential nightmare for the home mechanic – it was of pioneering construction for its day with unitary ‘tub’, bolt on panels and a plastic roof. But the appeal of the DS is as much as a cultural icon as a car with a long list of celebrity owners and fans (Alec Guinness, Peter Cook and Will Self among them), plus regular appearances on film and in design museums and art galleries.
Skoda Octavia turns 50 The Škoda Octavia is celebrating its 50th birthday this year. The Octavia replaced the Škoda 440, also known as ‘Spartak’. The Octavia was the first model to be developed internally in 1989 after Škoda became part of VW Group. The first concept car was made in 1992. The vehicle was launched in 1996; its Octavia estate version was introduced two years later, followed by the Octavia 4x4. In 2000 a new, modernised Octavia was introduced that is still manufactured in Mlada Boleslav today - the Octavia Tour. In February 2004 the company launched the secondgeneration Škoda Octavia, which was then facelifted in 2008. Škoda, the Czech Republic’s biggest car manufacturer has sold over 2 million Škoda Octavias worldwide and currently offers a vast range of trims, including the sporty Škoda Octavia RS and the Octavia Scout.
Cashback deal from Vauxhall Consumers seem to be in a no-win situation in today’s chaotic economy: if we borrow money, interest is punitive, yet if we have cash to invest the rates we’re sold are derisory. But from today, Vauxhall is offering new car buyers a fresh and innovative solution to both these woes with its new ‘You Pay, We Pay’ deal, giving customers a wholesome five per cent cashback on new models purchased with its already generous zero per cent finance schemes. ‘You Pay, We Pay’ means that buyers of most new Astras, Zafiras, Merivas and Tigras can walk into their nearest Vauxhall dealership, choose either a two, three or four-year nought per cent interest package through GMAC and receive a big fat cheque equivalent to five per cent of the sum financed when they take delivery of their new car. Better still, buyers who are keen to part with none of their hard-earned cash up front can do so, since no deposit is required on the interest-free two year deal. And even for those buyers who’d like to spread the cost over three or four years, only 10 or 30 per cent deposits respectively are required. “In a new car market flooded with the same old deals, ‘You Pay, We Pay’ is a genuinely fresh approach,” said Andy Dunstan, Vauxhall’s retail sales director. “With many new car buyers unsure of what the future holds, we felt that Vauxhall needed to raise the bar in the market and offer something extra. The beauty of the deal is not only its simplicity, but the fact that it genuinely puts money back in the pockets of hard-hit consumers.” Of course, buyers can choose to spend the money how they wish, but for canny investors there’s never been a better deal. Compared with buying a car with cash – or worse still with a deal that attracts interest – ‘You Pay, We Pay’ means buyers keep their money in the bank to earn interest, along with a five per cent cashback payment, which in itself would earn three per cent interest at today’s average rates. “Liquidity, a healthy cash-flow and getting the best deals are buyers’ key priorities in today’s climate,” said Dunstan. “‘You Pay, We Pay’ addresses these concerns and gets them into great value, award winning cars at the same time.”

How three brothers made national history for traveling 1,000 kilometers across UAE on two quad bikes. “The open desert touches you in the heart… it’s so big that it makes you feel you’re nothing,” Paolo Rossetti, student development coordinator at UAE University, and leader of the group. EDITOR’S NOTE: Paolo Rossetti—40, a nine-year resident of UAE, and counting— along with his brothers Andrea and Marco, took turns on board two quad bikes from Sila to Khor Kelba for an adventure of a lifetime. They passed through the northern part of Liwa, the largest sand dune desert in the world, and then on to Arada, Hameem, Um Al Zamool, Al Qua’a’, Al Wagan, Al Ain, Shweib, and Fili. They spent six hours riding the quads each day in seven days from Jan. 16, 2009. They fed on cold, canned beans, other canned foods, and noodles soaked in hot water; camped out in the cold at night where temperature sometimes dropped to 9 Celsius; and were even attacked by a pack of wild dogs during one of their day trips. 20 March 2009 Car Xpress
The Rossetti brothers had originally planned to travel 1,200 kilometers for an attempt to land on the Guinness World Records. But a restricted military area near the border of Saudi Arabia south of Sila cut it short to 1,000 kilometers because they were kindly turned away by border police. Despite this, the Rossettis were still hopeful Guinness would consider. The Rossettis—two of whom were born in the Middle East: Andrea, 38, in Kuwait; Marco, 32, in Saudi Arabia; and both of whom flew in from Italy for the expedition—nonetheless made national history for their feat, and welcome any other group to try and break the record they have etched on the UAE desert. The following is Paolo Rossetti’s account of their adventure, made during a press conference called in the evening of Jan. 24, 2009 at Le Meridien Al Aqah Beach Resort in Fujairah, shortly after the last leg of their expedition.
CX: So, how was it? Paolo Rossetti: It was the most thrilling off-road trip ever in my life. It was the most intense. I have never had anything quite like it. We covered all the terrains of the UAE. (Along our way), we met a lot of people. They couldn’t believe us, they looked at us like we were aliens. They came to us, asked us what we were doing there. Around the second day, we were in Liwa where the dunes were fantastic. The dunes of Liwa were about two- thirds the height of this hotel—the second level of this hotel, that’s the height of the dunes and we climbed them up. We also saw wild gazelles. We were attacked by a pack of wild dogs. Two came from behind. They were fast. We thought there was no problem, we were on quad bikes. But these dogs were very smart. There were, in all, five or six of them. They had team work. They hunted us. They pushed us against the dune. We ran. We got lost. We were able to find our way back, but that was a little bit scary. We had three compasses, three Global Positioning System (GPS) equipments. We had laptops connected to GPS with a live satellite match, but the two GPS on the quad bikes, because of the vibration, we think, would switch off. When we finally reached Fili, where the mountains start to come into view, it was cold and difficult. The night before, when we went to sleep, we had a decision to make: The mountains were different—in the desert, if you cannot go this way, you go that way, no problem; but in the mountains, once you’re
22 March 2009 Car Xpress
inside, you cannot go out the path you’ve already taken. So, we were worried, but we decided, we’ve done 900 kilometers already, we could not stop. Luckily we were okay.
CX: What else happened? PR: We were stopped four times by the UAE border patrol. They found us by radar. In the first three, there was no problem. They took our names and asked us what we were doing in the middle of the desert. The fourth time they stopped us, they said we couldn’t proceed because it was a restricted military area. So, we had to change our plan and go around. Because the border police stopped us, our adventure became bigger but the Guinness… no more. We are not sure. We have no control over this. We have to collect the evidence to show what we did so they will see if this is worthy of the Guinness or not. We have complete DVD-quality tapes and we will send it.
CX: What are your plans now? PR: We want to collect the evidence and submit it to the UAE government, as well, to tell them this is what we did, this the proof of it and if they enter it in public record, then anybody in the UAE can try to beat this record. This off-road trip on quad bikes has not been done before. We have the evidence to prove that we did not just stay at home.
CX: How was your schedule? What time did you start? What time did you call it a day? Food, what did you eat? PR: We started early in the beginning. We were getting up at 4:30 am, but we had to
wait for the sun so we would normally start at 7:00 am and finish at 3:00 pm or 3:30 pm because we still had to pitch tents. We approximately had five hours of actual driving time and finished up to about 200 kms. a day depending on the terrain. We had canned food and noodles. We ate cold beans, too.
CX: What do you think were the qualities that this adventure brought out in all three of you? PR: It would be the flexibility of the mind. The open desert touches you in the heart… it’s so big that it makes you feel you’re nothing. When a person does a very difficult thing…far away, there are many small things that have to go together. When one thing changes, everything changes. For seven days, we were in full concentration. Full power of our the mind—change the equipment; change the way we go. Mentally, it was very tiring, and, of course physically also to be on the quad bike.
CX: When did it all start? PR: For three years, I have been thinking about this. Preparations started last December—that was when we decided to do it. We have been talking about this for a long time. Everybody’s holding their breath. On May 17 this year, RM Auctions will hold it’s exclusive Ferrari Leggenda e Passione in Maranello, Italy with the 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa, the most significant and desirable Ferrari, taking centerstage and expected to set a new world record for a vintage motor car sold at an auction The current world record is held by RM Auctions, in association with Sotheby’s, for a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyder (s/n 2377GT), which sold for $10,894,400 USD (€7,040,000, £5,598,208 GBP). This current world record was set also at famed Ferrari Leggenda e Passione, in Maranello on May 18, 2008. Considered as one of the most alluring, competitive and iconic of all Ferrari racing cars, the beautiful and immediately recognizable Scaglietti-designed, “pontoonfender” 250 TR was produced from 1957 to 1958 during which only 22 were constructed. The Ferrari 250 TRs entered 19 international championship races from 1958 through 1961 emerging with 10 victories and earning them legendary status among discerning collectors, as well as the honor of being one of the most desirable and competitive racing Ferraris ever built. “This legendary 250 TR is one of the most exciting motor cars ever to be presented in auction history,” says Max Girardo, managing director of RM Europe. “The Ferrari Leggenda e Passione event, now in its third year, is firmly established as the place to sell important road and race going Ferraris, and we are delighted to present this stunning 250 TR at its Maranello birthplace,” he adds. The1957 Ferrari 250 TR (chassis no. 0714TR) was extensively campaigned in its day with significant finishes at the world’s most important racing events, and is now being offered at auction for the first time. The car is resplendent in its period racecorrect black livery and red nose. In December 1957, this car was delivered to its first owner, racing driver and future coachbuilder, Piero Drogo in Modena, Italy. Drogo debuted the car as a privateer in the
celebrated 1000 km Buenos Aires in January 1958 with a respectable fourth place finish, competing with such legendary drivers as Phil Hill, Peter Collins, Wolfgang von Trips and Olivier Gendebien. Following entries in the Grand Prix of Cuba and Portugal, the car was sold by American Ferrari agent Luigi Chinetti to Texas rancher and entrepreneur Alan Connell whose competitive driving skills and affluence afforded him several wins on the 1959 North American racing circuit. 0714TR continued its prowess on the track with subsequent owners, and competed in its last professional race in June 1963 at the Elkhart Lake 500. The Ferrari 250 TR has become an enduring and exceedingly valuable classic whose soaring lines and sculptural elegance give it a sense of speed even when standing still. The legendary s/n 0714TR is by far the most campaigned of the 250 TR cliente series cars with a fascinating ownership and racing history, establishing its rarified place in the collector world as one of the most beautiful and valuable Ferraris ever offered in auction history. All cars presented at the Ferrari Leggenda e Passione event will be certified by Ferrari Classiche. Celebrating 30 years in the collector car industry, RM Auctions and its associated companies are responsible for acquisitions, restorations and sales of the world’s rarest and most valuable vintage automobiles, including record-breaking sales in Maranello, Italy and London, England. It's a concept - a work in progress. But it could just be out on the road, considering that the car manufacturer's sister company, Audi, already has a class of its kind. Volkswagen took the North American International Auto Show in Detroit by storm this year with the world debut of an allnew mid-engine, rearwheel drive roadster. Named Concept BlueSport
32 March 2009 Car Xpress
to define its environmental and sporting aspirations, this chic, mean-looking, twoseat roadster, combines a highly efficient, mid-mounted common rail diesel engine with a lightweight chassis structure to put the emphasis on simplicity and sharp dynamics. “The BlueSport proves to be a compact and passionate car with a clear Volkswagen signature. The car offers pure dynamics with a powerful 180hp Clean Diesel engine that is combined with the characteristic Volkswagen philosophy of efficiency,” says Volkswagen’s Chairman of the Board, Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn. The Concept BlueSport made its appearance at the car show in Detroit with a flex silver exterior and orange fabric convertible top. Volkswagen chief designer, Walter de Silva says the car is the “symbiosis of outstanding technology and timeless Volkswagen design that makes (it) an exceptional sports automobile. “Its styling is clear and is reduced to the essentials; the car body itself has a lean and linear structure.” The interior shows finesse in details and conveys a high level of technological fascination. Immediately visible to the eye is the intuitive and easy to operate touchscreen. Perfectly adapted to the interior are the leather upholstered seats in lightweight construction with their single-piece seatbacks. Behind the two sport seats, a 132 kW / 180hp strong Clean Diesel (TDI) with common rail injection and downstream NOx storage catalytic converter delivers dynamic performance. A 6-speed DSG dual clutch transmission—the most economical and agile transmission system in the world—transfers power to the rear wheels. In just 6.6 seconds the sports car is moving at 100 km/h; its top speed is 226 km/h. Also having a positive impact on the car’s low fuel consumption of just 4.3 l/100 km and reduced emissions are two technologies that are part of the so-called Eco mode: an automatic start- stops system and energy regeneration. Together they propel the Concept BlueSport to an additional fuel savings of up to 0.2 litre per 100 kilometres
in city driving. The Concept BlueSport is fitted with a four-cylinder 2.0-litre TDI engine which produces 180 PS and 258 lbs ft of torque from 1,750 rpm. Despite its sporting focus, the adoption of lightweight materials, coupled with a 45:55 weight distribution and multi-link rear suspension allows Concept BlueSport to strike a balance between agility and economy—BlueSport emits just 113 g/ km of CO2, while returning 65 mpg on the combined cycle. To improve fuel economy and emissions further, the ‘Eco’ mode function can be engaged to activate an automatic Stop-Start system and braking energy regeneration. Styled by a team led by Director of Design for Volkswagen, Klaus Bischoff and Director of the Design Centre in Potsdam, Thomas Ingenlath, Concept BlueSport combines an elegant profile with a purposeful stance, clean surfaces and innovative design details. Finished in metallic flex silver with a contrasting orange retractable fabric roof, Concept BlueSport marks an evolution of Volkswagen design with short front and rear overhangs complemented by a set of unique multi-spoke 19-inch alloy wheels. The rear features distinctive high-intensity LED light clusters above an aerodynamic diffuser which incorporates twin tailpipes. Measuring 3,990 mm in length, 1,260 mm high and 1,745 mm wide the Concept BlueSport is shorter than a Golf yet almost as wide. Despite the modest proportions the Concept BlueSport retains practical features such as a 112-litre load space under the bonnet and an additional 70-litres in the rear boot. The colour of the Concept BlueSport’s orange roof continues inside, with subtle styling and cabin lighting accents. The stylish lightweight sports seats are upholstered in black leather, while the dashmounted touchscreen gives access to all information and entertainment functions. The Concept BlueSport is a design study with no immediate plans for production. While it draws inspiration from the past it serves to reinterpret the concept of a midengined Volkswagen sports car.

All said, now where’s the beef? It’s in City Safety—a unique feature that can help the driver avoid or reduce the effects of the type of low-speed impacts that are common in city traffic and traffic tailbacks. If the car is about to drive into the vehicle in front and the driver does not react, the car brakes itself. “We are the first manufacturer in the world to offer this type of feature as standard. City Safety clearly advertises that the new XC60 is the safest car Volvo has ever produced. The car is packed with our accumulated safety know-how and technology, both when it comes to preventing accidents and protecting all

the occupants in a collision,” says Tomas Ernberg, managing director, Volvo Cars Middle East. On Jan. 27th, 2009, Volvo stepped boldly into what is currently the automotive world’s fastest-growing segment, with the launch of the stunning Volvo XC60 at the Four Seasons Golf Club, DFC. Hundreds of car enthusiasts, distributors and Volvo consumers attended the event to witness the unveiling of the crossover. “This is not only the safest Volvo ever. If you ask me, it’s also the most stunning. Not a bad combination is it?” says Lex Kerssemakers, president, Volvo Cars Overseas Corporation (VCOC), and former
vice president, Product and Strategy. “We are delighted to introduce the new XC60 to the GCC market. The XC60 crossover had its premiere showing at the international car show in Geneva in March 2008, with the first cars reaching dealers in Europe in autumn 2008. Now the Middle East has been introduced to this vehicle and we are very much looking forward to the feedback. ” The Volvo XC60 offers a very high level of active safety. Apart from Volvo’s All Wheel Drive with Instant TractionTM, there is a further developed stability-enhancement function, DSTC, which is fitted as standard. In addition there is a wide range of optional functions, including the all-new
Cars are driven by people. Therefore the guiding principle behind everything we make at Volvo is - and must remain - safety. Volvo founders, Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larson.
Trailer Stability Assist (TSA) which offers unbeatable control when towing a trailer. The braking system in the Volvo XC60 is based on the system used in the Volvo XC90. The powerful brakes in combination with the lower weight of the smaller car means that braking performance is very good indeed. Engine performance too is of the highest level. At introduction, the Volvo XC60 will be available with a turbocharged 3-litre highefficiency in-line six producing 285 hp/400 Nm.
Target group The XC60 project has its sights set on a target group that imposes high demands on design, brand integrity and high-tech content in its choice of lifestyle products. Tongue in cheek, one might say that it’s all about consumers who’ve grown up with the microchip as a natural supplement to their breakfast cereal. They’re used to the immensely fast pace of development in the world of electronics – and every succeeding birthday has brought with it increased capacity in ever-shrinking gift packages. When it comes to the choice of car, these consumers adopt the same view as they do for other lifecycle products, that is to say all the properties should preferably be integrated into one single attractive and intelligent package. “One might say that this could be the C30 owner’s next car. It’s as sporty and exciting, but way more capable. An all-round car for the person who lives single in the city and for the young family taking the kids for a weekend of fun and adventure,” says Roula Beiruty, marketing manager, Volvo Cars Middle East. Being the pioneers of technologies such as dual-stage airbags, seat-belt pretension and the innovative BLIS (Blind Spot Information System) has enhances the brands own vision to “be the world’s most desired and successful premium car brand”, aiming to “create the safest and most exciting car experience for modern families”.
The driver is central Volvo Cars’ development of safety solutions is based on three main approaches: the car, the traffic environment and the human being. The driver needs to be alert and have the ability to take quick decisions in stressful situations, which is often easier said than done. “We focus on technologies that help Car Xpress March 2009 39
the driver observe critical situations and avoid collisions. Traffic accidents should not be regarded as unavoidable. With the right technology, we can give the driver the support needed to help avoid accidents,” says Ernberg.
Perfect grip The Volvo XC60 is equipped as standard with Volvo’s All Wheel Drive with Instant TractionTM to guarantee the best possible road grip whatever the situation. With the help of an electronically controlled clutch, the AWD system automatically distributes drive between the front and rear wheels. The Instant Traction function shifts power from the front to the rear wheels at lightning speed, for instance when starting from standstill on slippery or loose surfaces. 40 March 2009 Car Xpress
Further developed
Improved control
Volvo’s DSTC (Dynamic Stability and Traction Control) function has been further developed in the new Volvo XC60 in order to help providing even more stable driving. DSTC registers deviations between the driver’s intended direction and the car’s actual direction. As a complement, the further developed DSTC function registers the car’s roll rate as well, giving the opportunity to detect slowly builtup skids. This may occur if the driver suddenly releases the accelerator pedal while steering, for instance when leaving a highway slightly too late. By measuring the roll rate, the DSTC function is able to start the regulation at an earlier stage – and with greater precision. This is highly noticeable in dynamic driving where the car is exposed to high lateral forces.
The purpose of the new Trailer Stability Assist (TSA) function is to dampen the oscillation tendencies that can arise when towing a trailer or caravan. In certain conditions, the rig runs the risk of swaying from side to side or “snaking” and it can be difficult for the driver to control this movement. TSA steps in and together with the further developed DSTC function helps stabilise the car and trailer by braking one or more wheels as necessary while at the same time reducing the engine’s torque. TSA operates on all road surfaces and can be specified as a separate active-safety option when purchasing a tow-bar.
Roll-over prevention The XC60 is also equipped with Roll Stability Control (RSC) as standard. RSC
is an active stability-enhancement system. If the system assesses that there is a considerable risk of a roll-over, the engine’s torque is reduced and some braking power is directed to one or more wheels to help counter any tendency to roll over.
Downhill control Hill Descent Control (HDC) is Volvo’s sophisticated technology for assisting slow progress in first gear when driving on steep gradients, and it is available as an option on the new Volvo XC60. Using the car’s braking system and engine torque, HDC controls the car’s speed and maintains a steady crawling speed. This leaves the driver free to focus solely on steering safely. HDC is activated via a button on the instrument panel. The driver can at any time take over by pressing either the accelerator or brake pedal. Once another gear is selected, HDC is
automatically disengaged. All changes take place smoothly and gently.
Active chassis The Four-C option makes the Volvo XC60 extra comfortable, especially on somewhat poorer roads. Volvo’s Four-C is an advanced, self-regulating chassis system that uses a number of sensors to continuously monitor the car’s behaviour. The dampers are adjusted to suit the current driving conditions in mere fractions of a second. The three chassis settings, Comfort, Advanced and Sport, allow the driver to adapt the chassis to suit road conditions at the touch of a button.
Power steering Speed-dependent power steering is an option on the new Volvo XC60. The system allocates more servo assistance at lower
speeds, for instance to make steering easier when parking. Servo assistance is reduced as speed rises in order to give the driver the most optimal road feel. The level of servo assistance can be adjusted via a menu in the car’s information system to comply with the individual wishes of the customer. There are three levels to choose between.
Top performance The T6 petrol engine that is available in all Volvo’s large cars as of model year 2008 is based on Volvo’s compact 3.2-litre in-line six, an all-aluminium engine that was introduced in the new Volvo S80 in 2006. The turbo version, with a displacement of 3.0 litres, delivers 210 kW (285 hp) with torque of no less than 400 Nm. Maximum torque is available from just 1500 rpm and remains on tap throughout the rev range. Car Xpress March 2009 41
The result is swift acceleration and smooth driving properties. The turbo version has a somewhat smaller displacement owing to its slightly smaller bore and shorter stroke. However, this is compensated by the turbocharger which in this engine takes in exhaust gases in two phases. The inlet side has been divided into two sections of three cylinders each using what is known as twin-scroll technology. The twin-scroll approach makes for a simpler, more compact turbocharger that provides very fast response, fully on a par with the power delivered by twin turbochargers. The T6 engine is perfect for sporty driving. At the same time it has been programmed to provide the highest possible power with the lowest possible fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. With four-wheel drive – AWD – the engine is used most optimally since maximum power is transmitted onto the road surface. Like all other Volvo models, the new Volvo XC60 has a transverse driveline. Transverse installation gives the engine more space under the bonnet and helps reduce the risk of penetration into the passenger compartment in the event of a frontal collision.
Six-speed Geartronic The engines in the new Volvo XC60 are mated to a six-speed gearbox, either manual or automatic with Geartronic. The transmission has been dimensioned to handle the immense output of the T6 and Volvo’s powerful diesel engines. Sixth gear is a pure overdrive ratio and offers relaxed, economical cruising. The T6 version also has a sport mode. Geartronic makes it possible to change gears manually should the driver prefer a sportier driving style or if he or she wants to hold on to a specific gear
Five phases With the aim of creating as sound a basis as possible for the continuous development of safety technology from a human perspective, Volvo Cars is involved in far-reaching research based on real-life traffic situations. The Volvo Cars model and methodology for accident analysis means an extension of the traditional approach to traffic accident research by focusing on the 42 March 2009 Car Xpress
entire sequence, divided into five phases – from non-conflict to post-crash. Based on these phases, the company develops and enhances its safety solutions – all of which are now gathered together in the new Volvo XC60.
Safety Centre In order to offer cars with a worldclass safety level, Volvo Cars regards it as essential to ensure that the safety systems used cover every size of occupant, across a wide range of speeds and a broad spectrum of collision scenarios. For this reason 100– 120 crash tests are performed with each new car model at the Volvo Cars Safety Centre and, before the car even exists as a prototype, it has been crashed several thousands of times in virtual simulators. This unique facility in Göteborg opened in 2000 and is among the most advanced centres of its kind. The tests form a highly effective complement to the experiences gained from accident research in the field.
Origins The Volvo Group has its origin in 1927 when the first Volvo car rolled off the production line at the factory in Göteborg, Sweden. The brand Volvo has come a long way since then, covering about 100 countries, comprising some 2400 sales outlets and service workshops around the world, including about 1500 in Europe and 400 in North America. The brand Volvo exudes road safety, quality, excitement and environmental control.

Car Xpress March 2009 47
The stunning Aspid. Ever dreamt of having one? Car Xpress got word that talks were ongoing to open a Middle East dealership. We’ll hold off on the details for now till arrangements have been finalized. Meantime, hang on to that dream—it just might make your day. The Aspid demonstrates an impressive ability to accelerate to 100mph (160km/h) in 5.9 seconds and return to a standstill in just 3.1 seconds (0-60mph takes a mere 2.8 seconds). And with 1.6g of lateral acceleration, its cornering grip is arguably even more remarkable. Much of this performance results from the installation of a supercharged 2-litre engine delivering 400bhp into a vehicle with a kerb weight of just 740kg, resulting in a very high power-to-weight ratio. The light weight also ensures excellent fuel economy, with an estimated consumption in normal driving conditions of just 59mpg (4.8 l/100km). CO2 emissions have yet to be officially measured but are estimated at 197gm/km, which is significantly less than cars of comparable or even lesser performance. Yet far from being an open-to-theelements track day special normally associated with such light weight, the Aspid actually comes better equipped than many significantly heavier super cars.
48 March 2009 Car Xpress
Inside the fully enclosed climate controlled cabin, which adds a further touch of luxury with its leather trimming, is a sophisticated electronic system featuring two highly intuitive touch screens that control everything from the sensitivity of the power steering to the integral data-logging facility. The system is highly interactive and the driver can change many parameters such as the rev limit, valve timing, power output, steering assistance, ABS, noise valve, brake balance, traction control, stability control, pitch, roll, yaw and ride height as well as damping characteristics. And with a touch of the screen, it’s simplicity itself to restore the factory settings. With a design brief intended to maximise active and passive safety, it’s also believed to be the only car in the world to meet FIA safety requirements as standard, without any additional modifications, as well as European road car homologation requirements. This makes the car as easy to use on the race track as simply donning a safety helmet. And immediately following an exhilarating run on the track it can be easily driven in a relaxed fashion through the town or on a long distance grand tour. Ignacio Fernández, who put together the team of automotive engineers that created the car, says the Aspid “proves you can design an exclusive sports car with
the ultimate dynamic performance without compromising fuel economy and everyday driveability.” Fernandez, also heads IFR Automotove, the Cataluña-based company he founded five years ago to help develop green automotive technologies based on light weight designs increasingly required for the mainstream car market. “A vehicle engineering consultancy has to be able to demonstrate its ability to develop new technology and that means designing a car incorporating that technology,” says Fernandez. “So we decided to build a super sports car fit for the 21st century, using new lightweight designs to create a vehicle with exceptional acceleration, cornering and braking ability. Much of the dynamic performance we’ve achieved can be attributed to the technology we’ve incorporated into the chassis, suspension and braking systems.” The Aspid is also very compact—with a wheelbase smaller than a city car—and cleverly packaged to accommodate even the tallest driver and passenger. Despite its size, the fully enclosed two-seater is comprehensively equipped and as far removed from being a ‘stripped down to the bare essentials’ track-day special that you could possibly imagine, which its performance figures would also suggest. It is first and
foremost a premium sports car designed for the road. “The whole point of the Aspid is that it is small and lightning fast, just like its namesake,” says Fernández. “But we also believe it’s the first genuine attempt at producing an unusually compact luxury sportscar, not just with impeccable road holding and handling, but also with the highest possible quality for a car of its size.” “Our market research confirms the importance of a supercar having strong emotional appeal. But it also has to be totally unique. Combine these two factors with the need for robust environmental credentials and the result is what we’ve endeavoured to achieve with the Aspid.” Looking at the bigger picture, Fernández believes all the technical innovations the company has developed for the Aspid could be applied to a wide range of vehicles including mass produced cars, thereby making a relevant contribution to sustainable personal mobility. The most noticeable change for the driver is the elimination of traditional instrumentation replaced by one or more interactive touch screens. These allow the driver to change many parameters such as the rev limit, valve timing, power output, steering assistance, ABS, noise valve, brake balance, ride height, traction and stability controls, as well as influencing the pitch, roll and yaw of the car by adjusting its damping characteristics. For motorsport enthusiasts the system offers an in-built and extendable data logging capability, readily configured for all OBD (onboard diagnostics) and CAN (control area network) sensors with 24 analogue channels available and upwards. For the road this is complemented by GPS satellite navigation, GPRS/GSM mobile communications, motion sensing accelerometers, Wi Fi wireless technology, Ethernet interface connections, as well as touch screens for both driver and co-driver. The system can help reconfigure the car to suit different drivers and different driving conditions and can ensure the Aspid is set-up correctly for the road or track. It can even direct the driver through a series of tests and operations that will enable it to calculate engine torque and power. “The result of all these technical innovations, careful choice of materials and volumetric efficiency is a high level of performance without compromising the ease with which the car can be driven on normal roads,” says Fernández. With GTbyCITROËN, a show-car presented at the 2008 Paris Motor Show, Citroën became the first vehicle manufacturer to cross over to the virtual world: An original take on a road car, GTbyCITROËN is a style replica of a vehicle from the digital world. The car is the result of a partnership between Citroën and Polyphony, designer of the driving simulation game Gran Turismo 5 on Playstation 3. Already shipped in more than 50 million units worldwide, Gran Turismo is renowned for its quality, design and realism. In the game, GTbyCITROËN features an electric drive train powered by a fuel cell with no pollutant emissions. It is a car designed to square up to the strongest competition.
56 March 2009 Car Xpress
“GTbyCITROËN shows how the worlds of virtual and real-life motoring can join together to create a truly innovative partnership. We were delighted that Citroën approached us and gave us the opportunity to combine our creative strengths to build this very special concept car. To see the car take shape in game and then for real has been a truly unique experience as our work normally stays in the digital world. I just hope I can get behind the wheel of GTbyCITROËN and drive it on a real race track!” says Kazanori Yamauchi, president of Polyphony Digital Inc. and creator of Gran Turismo. GTbyCITROËN is geared to the world of motor racing, with its dynamic styling,
sculpted lines and sharp graphics. The rear end is oversized, made exaggeratedly long in order to create an effect of retinal persistence. The idea is to make the concept car even faster visually. The white-to-grey gradation on the body side further underlines this impression of continuous movement. The cabin of GTbyCITROËN, designed to seat two adults, expresses the grand touring vision behind this show-car. The on-board ambience allies premium, extensively worked materials with a more high-tech effect for the driving position. The layout of the low driving position was dictated by driving pleasure. The aim is for the driver to be able to concentrate on the
road, assisted by a head-up display clearly displaying driving information.
Power The design of GTbyCITROËN reflects a quest for optimal aerodynamic design. The show-car is a vehicle of flowing, taut lines, stretched to the extreme. The cleanly drawn sides, ribbed at the top, and the pearlescent shade of the bodywork enhance the vehicle’s sleekly muscled looks. The determined look of the front end is enhanced by wide air intakes and clear-cut horizontal headlamps. The headlamps feature penetrating blue LEDs in order to light the road effectively and keep rivals at a respectful
distance! The chrome chevrons on the smooth bonnet express the Marque’s identity. The carbon rearview mirrors on their finely profiled supports appear to be suspended as if to cleave the air, giving GTbyCITROËN an excellent on-road stance. The large wraparound windscreen flows seamlessly into the roof and on into the rear mobile airfoil with its exaggeratedly long shape. The fast-flowing lines create the impression of a car in perpetual movement. The whole body expresses performance and continuous movement. GTbyCITROËN also expresses strength and power through generous volumes, (length: 4.960m, 2.080m and height: 1.090m)
underlined by strongly marked wheel arches. The diamond-effect 21-inch aluminium wheels enhance the car’s sporty personality.
Exceptional handling The interior design confirms the vehicle’s dynamic and powerful style. The interior of GTbyCITROËN, designed to seat a driver and co-driver, expresses the racing spirit of this concept. The on-board ambience allies rich, premium, extensively worked materials with a more high-tech effect for the driving position, inspired by the world of motorsports. Looking beyond the spectacular visual effect, the gullwing opening of the two doors
Car Xpress March 2009 57
gives GTbyCITROËN a level of accessibility rarely seen on this type of vehicle. The driver and co-driver can therefore slip into their seats and get out on the track as quickly as possible. The dark interior of this showcar is a surprise, compared with the light bodywork. Upholstered in black leather with subtle touches of rare materials such as copper and steel, the cabin of GTbyCITROËN is distinctly sporty. Two padded racing seats upholstered in dark leather, each fitted with a four-point harness, enfold the driver and passenger for exceptional driving sensations. Placed low down to highlight the impression of speed, the elegant seats are a perfect fit with the rest of the interior. The top-stitched leather of the door panels and floor adds to the opulence of the interior. The driving position expresses the spirit of competition. The design was objectively guided by the motivation to win. The dashboard, with its clean uncluttered design, flows into the receding lines of an imposing copper sculpture. The thrusting modern lines of the sculpture become the central tunnel of the vehicle, illustrating the power of GTbyCITROËN and appearing to catalyse its strength. Created in a twist of this same copper sculpture, the leather-and-steel steering wheel also reflects the sporting spirit of the cabin. To promote maximum concentration, the driver of GTbyCITROËN has a headup display for driving information. Using red LEDs, this system projects key driving information – such as speed and navigation data – onto the windscreen in the driver’s direct line of vision. The head-up display makes a significant contribution to safety with its direct readout. Drivers assimilate data more quickly and do not have to look away from the road.
Optimized aerodynamics Special emphasis was placed on the aerodynamics and flowing design of GTbyCITROËN, these being key Citroën values. The objective was to enhance the vehicle’s dynamics and to create exceptional driving sensations. Looking beyond its taut, dynamic lines, this racing car features innovative equipment such as enlarged air intakes at the front, a flat underside, and a mobile spoiler and air diffuser at the rear. All these features play an active role in reducing lift and – above all – drag, to pin the car to the ground.

S is for special, and there’s so much about the new Maybach 57 S that makes it even more extraordinarily special, indeed. With its enhanced performance and additional individualisation features, this variant of the Maybach 57 meets the exclusive wishes of demanding customers for even greater engine output and agility. To match the increased power, the suspension of the Maybach 57 S is set up for a somewhat firmer response – making it the ideal high-end luxury saloon for owner-drivers who appreciate an engaging experience at the wheel. The extra 45 hp output compared with the Maybach 57 is provided by an enhanced version of the 6-litre V12 bi-turbo engine developed in cooperation with Mercedes-AMG. This powerplant delivers breathtaking acceleration, propelling the Maybach 57 S from 0 to 62.5 mph in just 5 seconds. The 57 S extends the Maybach model range with a car whose combination of contemporary luxury, the ultimate in comfort and state-of-the-art high-performance technology embodies the perfection which is characteristic of the brand.
Power plant The new, even more powerful 12-cylinder powerplant in the Maybach 57 S has a displacement of six litres and—thanks to bi-turbo technology and an air/water intercooler—a maximum output of 612 hp. The impressive maximum torque of 1000 Nm (electronically limited) is available across a broad engine speed range (between 2000 and 4000 rpm). As a result, Maybach drivers who favour a sporty driving style can always call on prodigious reserves of power. Every 12-cylinder engine features a redesigned cover with a plate bearing the serial number of the unit and the signature of the Mercedes-AMG specialist who built the entire engine by hand in accordance with AMG’s traditional “one man, one engine” philosophy. The modified, firmer suspension set-up which the Maybach development team has created for the 57 S perfectly reconciles differing requirements. It ensures that the engine’s impressive performance and particularly high dynamic potential can be put down on the road safely and reliably at all times. But it is also able to maintain the extremely high level of ride comfort which is offered by all Maybach luxury saloons and which is characteristic of the brand.
Breathtaking
Maybach has created a study, based on the Maybach 57, which reflects a very special customer demand: all chrome trim parts in the vehicle interior are gold-plated, a wafer-thin layer of genuine 24-carat gold being applied to each one. The gleam of the gold adds a heightened touch of refinement to the interior of the Maybach Saloon, and harmonises perfectly with the high-quality wood and the Maybach leathers used for the study. A carefully coordinated gold paint was selected for the wheels and applied using a special, newly developed process. The expertise which the Maybach specialists have build up over the course of this project will allow them to take the most exclusive of customer requests in their stride in the future.
from the front to the rear of the vehicle in a continuous line. Narrow, diamond-studded strips in 18-carat yellow or white gold can be added to the centre console too, along with an optional coat of arms. The selector lever can also be decorated with the owner’s monogram or coat of arms as an option. In the rear of the Maybach 62 the optional partition provides the ideal place for a prominently positioned coat of arms, which can be set off to perfection with 18-carat white or yellow gold strips and discreet diamonds. Combining the ornamented partition with the optional trim strips for the rear centre console creates an elegant and harmonious look and lends the interior a highly individual feel.
Interior refinement
Masterly skill
“Wellendorff Individualisation” offers particularly discerning Maybach owners the opportunity to elevate the on-board refinement of their high-end luxury saloon to new levels with exquisite gold inlays and precious stones. This latest development in Maybach’s successful individualisation strategy is based on close collaboration with the German jewellery Manufaktur Wellendorff, who meticulously produced the unique decorative inlays by hand. The new options range from exquisite decorative trim strips, embedded in the interior wood trim, to monograms and individual coats of arms, picked out in gold and diamonds. Maybach recently extended the range of optional equipment available ex-factory yet again, adding tailor-made business packages, for example, and vehicles specially configured for use in the luxury hotel sector. Maybach also has something of a tradition of realising virtually any customer request, no matter how unusual.
Wellendorff Individualisation is carried out with consummate skill at Wellendorff’s Manufaktur production facility in Pforzheim. The finest of contours are precisionmodelled by hand, allowing the delicate details of a personal coat of arms to be replicated perfectly. In terms of clarity and colour, the inlaid diamonds are categorised as IF/G (internally flawless/rare white). Setting the precious trim elements requires the utmost care and a great deal of experience. The required recesses have to be cut out of the Maybach’s high-quality wood appointments before the goldsmiths skilfully set each element, working to a tolerance of up to five thousandths of a millimetre. The refined gold trim strips are attached using specially developed retention pins, which are anchored in the wood and have a diamond head to fix the individual decorative elements in place.
Gold and diamonds The standard fine wood trim on the Maybach doors harmonises perfectly with the skilllfully crafted trim strips from Wellendorff, available in 18-carat yellow or white gold. The trim strips help accentuate the honed craftsmanship behind the Maybach interior appointments. The garland motif, typical of Wellendorff, and the handcut diamonds in the trim strips add a further level of sophistication to the Maybach interior. For the ultimate in individuality, the owner’s monogram can be added to the long, elegant decorative strips. The trim strips can be fitted on all four doors, extending
Sheer dynamism The new, uprated V12 engine which the Maybach engineers have enhanced in cooperation with the experts from Mercedes AMG gives the Maybach 57 S high-performance luxury saloon breathtaking acceleration and outstanding driving dynamics. Thanks to bi-turbo technology and an air/water intercooler, the 5980 cc V12 engine develops a maximum output of 450 kW/612 hp which it is able to maintain from 4800 to 5100 rpm, while the impressive maximum torque of 1000 Nm is available from 2000 to 4000 rpm. As the engine data indicates, the Maybach 57 S offers a whole new dimension of performance: acceleration from standstill to 62.5 mph takes 5.0 seconds.
Innovative technology Car Xpress March 2009 65
A combination of cutting-edge technology and a whole host of well-thought-out details developed by the Mercedes-AMG specialists forms the basis for the outstanding performance of the Maybach 57 S. The forged pistons, for example, which are made from a special material which is extremely resistant to temperature and pressure, have an oil-spray cooling system with a separate individual nozzle for each piston. A particularly powerful oil pump and a large oil cooler ensure that all lubrication points are supplied with oil – even in highly demanding conditions. The housings of the compressor and turbine in both turbochargers as well as the turbine and compressor wheels are designed for a maximum charge pressure of 1.5 bar.
conditions and regardless of the outside temperature.
Hand-assembled In keeping with the Maybach “Manufaktur” concept, the twelve-cylinder bi-turbo engine is assembled by hand at the Mercedes-AMG engine manufacturing facility. Nothing symbolises the “one man, one engine” philosophy more clearly than the characteristic engine plate which is attached to the cover of the V12 bi-turbo in the Maybach 57 S and which bears the signature of the specialist who assembled the unit – a signature which vouches for the care lavished on the engine and the quality of the workmanship.
High power output
Modified suspension
The highly efficient intercooler in the Maybach 57 S uses the principle of the air/water heat exchanger for particularly effective cooling of the intake air (which has been compressed by the turbochargers) before it enters the combustion chambers. The large surface of the low-temperature radiator ensures that sufficient cooling power is available, even when the engine is operating at full load. As a result, the driver of the Maybach 57 S can count on high power and torque output under all operating
The Maybach engineers have taken numerous measures to optimise the suspension of the 57 S in line with its enhanced performance in order to ensure that the impressive power output can be put down on the road smoothly and safely at all times. Modified front and rear stabiliser bars are used to reduce roll when the saloon corners at speed. Furthermore, the vehicle’s handling dynamics have been enhanced by lowering the suspension by 15 mm. The Adaptive Damping System ADS II

and the semi-active air suspension have been adjusted accordingly for a somewhat sportier response.
Specially developed The Michelin Pilot Sport tyres (size: 275/45 R 20) are matched perfectly to the revised suspension. These highperformance tyres are fitted on 8.5 J x 20 11-spoke light-alloy wheels which were specially developed for them, permitting higher maximum levels of longitudinal and lateral acceleration while also enhancing the handling characteristics even further. The Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and the acceleration skid control (ASR) system have been reconfigured and optimised to take account of the higher forces involved. Enhanced ventilation of the brake system improves braking performance and resistance to fading even further under all operating conditions. These measures ensure that the Maybach 57 S always offers the optimum degree of active safety.
Dynamic elegance The designers of the newly developed Maybach 57 S have used additional visual cues to reflect the car’s outstanding dynamic capabilities. Even when the vehicle is stationary, the exclusive monochrome
colour scheme and the striking, yet discreet and tasteful modifications provide unmistakable hints of the performance which the 57 S is capable of delivering. A look into the redesigned interior reveals an exquisite mix of materials, an aesthetically rewarding combination of colours and the characteristically perfect fit and finish which epitomise the highly quality-conscious outlook and unique craftsmanship of the Maybach “Manufaktur”.
Sheer dynamism Numerous modifications and new styling features add visual highlights which meet the high design standards of the Maybach brand. The special position which the 57 S occupies in the product range of the Sindelfingen-based luxury automaker is signalled by the exclusive monochrome colour scheme used for the exterior. The two special paint finishes, available in silver or black, add to the dynamic presence of the new high-performance saloon. This aspect of the new model’s character is reinforced further when a side view of the car reveals its 20-inch 11-spoke light-alloy wheels, which were specially developed for the Maybach 57 S, and the dark tinted glass of the rear side windows and rear window (not in US market).
New face The view of the front is dominated by the redesigned radiator grille. Although it is deliberately designed to echo closely the familiar Maybach design, the combination of the twin louvres and the use of a bodycolour headlamp background gives the 57 S a distinctive face of its own. Fog lamps with a new chrome surround complete the brilliant and aesthetically convincing impression created by the front of the vehicle. A redesigned rear apron is the dominant feature at the rear. It displays the two clearly visible chromed exhaust tailpipes at left and right to their best advantage by integrating them into the vehicle’s lines. Furthermore, the boot lid features the legends “Maybach” and “57 S” – the latter model designation also appearing on the front wings below the A-pillar. The overall image projected by the dynamically styled Maybach 57 S is a harmonious one – that of an exclusive luxury saloon which combines the highest quality and technical perfection with a particularly lively character and impressive performance.
Top comfort, high speed The interior of the rear passenger compartment of the Maybach 57 S has also been thoroughly reworked: the styling of the head restraints has been matched to the contemporary interior design concept while their ergonomic shape ensures that occupants can relax completely and enjoy typically high standards of Maybach comfort even on long journeys at high speeds. A nontransparent curtain which is available for the large, dark-tinted rear window offers additional privacy and provides a pleasantly subdued lighting effect even in daylight. The seat bases are trimmed in leather all round, underlining the dynamic character of the high-performance saloon. The Maybach designers have paid particular attention to redesigning the roof lining and the side interior trim in the 57 S. Finished in anthracite-coloured Alcantara in order to match the interior colour scheme, these elements add further emphasis to the dynamic and elegant atmosphere while bringing out the ceiling instruments with their black piano lacquer surround to great effect. Impressive in their own right, the choice leather, the particularly high-quality materials and the perfect craftsmanship which characterise the interior of the Maybach 57 S also testify to the Maybach Manufaktur’s refusal to compromise where the high standards associated with the brand name are concerned. 2009 hUMmER H3 This rock climber has an aura of its own
70 March 2009 Car Xpress
The H3 was engineered for off-road leadership among midsized SUVs and it does this with consummate ease. Befitting its iconic personality and in true HUMMER style, the 2009 H3 brings with it the performance oriented line-up of SUVs and SUTs, which will ensure it continues to command the top slot in the segment while maintaining the evergreen HUMMER legacy.
Powertrain The H3 is propelled by a normally aspirated Vortec 3.7-litre inline-5-cylinder engine with dual overhead cams and variable valve timing. This engine offers an excellent combination of power and efficiency, delivering 255 horsepower at 5600 rpm and 337 Nm of torque at 4800 rpm and is mated to a four-speed automatic transmission.
Design The H3’s bold looks make it readily
identifiable as a HUMMER. The most distinguishable features include its wide track width, short overhangs and huge tyres that provide stability, outstanding ground clearance and quick rock-climbing capability in off-road driving. The H3’s flat, chiseled surfaces, upright windshield and windows, signature seven-slot louvered grille, round headlamps housed inside square openings, and pronounced fender flares are all pure HUMMER. Power and strength emanate from its cubelike metal billet form. A new Steel Blue metallic exterior colour does justice to the character lines and bulges of the H3 while complementing the silver coloured lower front bumper. The H3’s interior is inviting and modern, blending premium cues with world-class
craftsmanship. Upscale touches include a perforated, leather-wrapped and stitched steering wheel and automatic transmission shift handle; bright-accented instrumentation; brushed, machinefinished trim plates; chrome door release handles; chrome bezel for the automatic transmission shifter; and chrome H3 emblem in the centre of the steering wheel. The H3 also provides the refinement, comfort and convenience required for enjoyable on-road driving as well. It offers premium options such as leather seats, a large electric express open/close sliding sunroof, a DVD-based navigation radio and numerous customized accessories. For 2009, there’s a rearview camera system with display on demand available as standard on all models and can be ordered

on the base H3 also. Innovative technology has allowed the camera to be placed in the rear view mirror while the images appear on the mirror aiding the driver’s line of sight during the reversing maneuver.
Unparalleled capability Compared to the H2, the H3 is 429 mm shorter in length, 152 mm shorter in height and 165 mm narrower. Roughly the same length as a midsize family sedan, the H3 comfortably navigates city traffic without daunting its driver and fits nicely in parking garages, while creating an aura of its own when on the move. Like all HUMMERs, the H3 delivers
37 degrees. These approach and departure angles permit the H3 to drive into a hole and back out again, without getting hung up either at the front or rear.
Safety and security The H3 incorporates structural enhancements and advanced safety systems to assist in crash avoidance and protection, including a reinforced passenger compartment safety cage that helps provide protection in the event of
72 March 2009 Car Xpress
exceptional rock crawling and climbing performance. The H3 was engineered for off-road leadership among midsize SUVs and it does this with consummate ease. The heart of this capability is its electronically controlled four-wheel drive system. The system features traction control, underbody shielding, an optional rear locking differential and StabiliTrak stability control. Among its off-road credentials, the H3 can ford 407 mm of water at 32 km/h or 610 mm streams at an 8 km/h pace, climb 407 mm vertical steps and rocks, make its way through deep sand and race easily over sandy surfaces. What is more significant for Hummer enthusiasts
in 2009 is that the H3 gets a driverselectable full-locking front differential, which means that drivers will have more control of the vehicle. The H3’s more maneuverable size provides other advantages, such as a 11.3 m turning circle, about the same as a typical compact car, making easy work of parking lot maneuvers and tight turns when offroading. The 231 mm ground clearance and maximum break-over angle of 25 degrees (with 33-inch tyres) both make it possible to clear large obstacles in off-road driving. Serious off-road performance is also aided by the maximum approach angle of 40 degrees and maximum departure angle of
side and frontal impacts. The strong, rigid steel structure surrounds the passenger compartment, runs from the A-pillars to the roof rail, back to the D-pillars and includes the bottom rocker panels, underfloor longitudinals and frame. The all-steel body panels and exceptionally strong frame further help protect occupants in a collision. The fully welded, ladder-type frame optimises crash performance, in addition to standing up to rigorous offroad requirements.
Additional crash protection is provided by a standard frontal dualstage air bag system. The H3 has GM’s Passenger Sensing System, which uses weight-sensing technology to turn the front passenger air bag on or off as appropriate. If the sensor system detects an unoccupied front passenger seat or the presence of a smaller occupant, the front passenger air bag is designed to automatically turn off so it would not deploy in the event of a frontal collision.

76 March 2009 Car Xpress
This US$650,000 exotic, super sports car can blow you away at 97kph in 3.8 seconds Car Xpress March 2009 77
Definitely a car collector’s musthave:The 2009 Spyker C12 Zagato. Losers can’t have them. Those mollycoddled milksops would most probably be whining once again in some dark corners with Sharon Stone on their mind, thinking how the sultry, racy American actress drove the C8 in Basic Instinct 2, and how the C12 could up the ante in the world of automobile cognoscentis. Introduced at the 2007 Geneva International Auto Show, the Spyker C12 Zagato is one of the first truly new super cars from Dutch automaker Spyker. It 78 March 2009 Car Xpress
maintains the airplane-themed styling cues of the C8 but in a more modern and considerably faster design crafted with help from the Milan-based design and engineering house Zagato. The company describes the C12 as an ultra-exclusive vehicle and isn’t very far from the truth—with production having started last year as a 2009 model-year car, only 24 examples of the Zagato variant will ever be made. The C12 Zagato has few extras beyond colors—its F1-style automatic transmission, and the supercharged
engine. The roof and side air intakes also recall design cues from Spyker’s F8-VII Formula 1 race car, while the gull-wing doors recall the Mercedes-Benz McLaren SLR. The engine represents a dramatic leap from the 400 hp Audi V8 of the C8. Instead, Spyker uses Volkswagen’s unique 6.0-liter W12 engine, which mates two VR6 engines together to produce a full 500 hp. The extra power accelerates the car at the same level as the lighter, race-only C8 GT2R—97kph in a searing 3.8 seconds— but also affords a slightly higher top
speed of 311kph. A special supercharger option can boost the engine to 641 hp, though Spyker hasn’t yet posted official testing results for this even faster version. Unlike the C8, this exotic C12 variant draws on Zagato’s expertise to add a six-speed automatic gearbox with paddle shifting; Spyker’s more familiar six-speed manual also remains available. The C12’s more predatory front end is one of many F1-derived design details that Spyker incorporated into the C12 Zagato’s swoopy body. Others include the air-scoop “chimneys,” the mirrors, the fuel
flap, and the diffuser. Among the more whimsical conceits are the scissors doors, with a window-in-a-window treatment that reminds us of old De Loreans and Lamborghinis. The new Zagato body becomes even more unique, aggressive and sensual at the same time. It features a new double bubble panoramic roof, F1 influenced nose and air intakes, chimney and a “coda tronca”, the typical Zagato cut off tail end. Maintaining Spyker’s styling philosophy, Zagato design put all these elements together and created an extremely stimulating example
of contemporary exotic high performance sports car by using typical modern Zagato lines which started from the Raptor Zagato in 1996.” The world première of this ultraexclusive version of the C12 range celebrated Spyker’s entry into the world of Formula One and marked the first integration of design elements and styling cues from the Spyker F8-VII Formula One car into the Spyker road car range. This point was underlined by the unveiling of the car being performed by Spyker’s Formula One race driver, Adrian Sutil.
