EDITOR’S NOTE In this issue’s Living Arabia section is an archaeological site in Iraq where excavations back in the 20s and 30s have yielded the remains of an ancient city with its burial grounds and the tomb of a queen. Diggings at the site—the Sumerian city-state of Ur in the present-day Tell el-Muqayyar in Iraq’s Dhi Qar Governorate—have resumed albeit at a slow pace. Efforts are underway to muster financial and logistical support so that a fullscale excavation can be done to develop the place into a major tourist attraction. Judging from studies conducted, and the extent of the finds unearthed so far, archaeologists believe Ur can be as big as, if not bigger than, Egypt’s Giza pyramids. Also in this edition’s Living Arabia is a feature on the souks as they are called, referring to what people in other parts of the world would call a public market. Souks take its roots to the yonder days where people had to content themselves with having their weekend shopping done at a small open space, the counterpart of what we now call garage sales or flea markets—and this because they could not go to the malls as there was none. Today’s souks have evolved such that some are right inside the malls—mashallah! Who’s on OUR FACEBOOK ? The fashionista founder and designer of the Al Mayyasa label herself, Fatma bin Fahad who tells us what turns her into a bundle of nerves when travelling. Ms. Ayesha Attique, one of Travel Arabia’s regular and prolific contributors, is back and this time with a feature on falconry in this edition’s Arabian Experience. Falconry in the Middle East has been considered an Arabian mystique for who else could tame a predatory bird and make it obey the call of its master with almost just a breath’s blow?

Dear editor, I have been hearing about Shillong, India for some time now. I have even searched the place in the Net and yes, it really looks like a nice spot to loosen up and unwind. Not much of a literati myself but hey, everyone knows Tagore and if they say he had stayed there, then yes, one can’t go wrong visiting Shillong. Deepthy Swapnali Dubai, UAE Dear Miss Swapnali I plan to go there for my annual break myself Editor

hailand, a country where nature and beauty can be appreciated at its best, has been developing a selection of enhanced tourism offerings to include health and wellness, weddings and honeymoons, green tourism and golfing. Available to visitors in some of the world’s most stunning locations, these four niche products can also be enjoyed at excellent value-formoney prices.

Health and wellness

In recent years, Thailand has become popular with visitors seeking medical or health and wellness holidays. For centuries, the country has been renowned for providing traditional holistic healing which is deeply entrenched within the Thai Buddhist beliefs. By combining local and traditional practises with modern techniques, Thailand offers visitors the very best in natural health treatments and medical care. From world-class day spas and international spa resorts to smaller massage outlets, Thailand’s range of health resorts can vary to match both requirement and budget. The all–inclusive spa packages offered by many of the main resorts which often include accommodation and treatments are affordable, and are very popular. Thailand can also provide a full range of medical treatments. Whether seeking aftercare for major surgery, a minor operation, cosmetics or dental care, visitors can be assured of only the very best in treatment and service. Due to a massive investment in the country’s private medical sector, most of Thailand’s top hospitals offer state-of-the-art equipment together with highly qualified doctors. Health and wellness and medical tourism in Thailand is growing as visitors select the combination of location, expert treatment with exceptional service to provide premium post-operative care as well as long term health and wellbeing.

For couples planning a truly memorable wedding or honeymoon, Thailand offers a wide range of stunning and exceptional locations to get married which goes with a myriad of romantic experiences. From the exotic islands and white sandy beaches in the south of the country to the fertile regions of Chiang Mai in the north, Thailand is a dream destination for the celebration of love. Offering superior accommodation and excellent leisure facilities, Thailand’s selection of fivestar hotels and small, boutique island resorts provides newly-weds with superb choice of where to stay to begin their new life in a perfect honeymoon retreat.

Luxury retreat

Dear editor, Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara, which recently featured in your magazine’s Luxury Retreat section (Travel Arabia, June-July 2012) indeed sounds like a luxurious retreat by all indications. A 24/7 butler service with villas that look more like private pal-

aces; “gastronomic adventures,” as your magazine’s article described the food and beverage outlets; and a lasting experience in the Arabian outback altogether make for an exciting stay. My family and I will be travelling to Abu Dhabi and will surely have the resort in our itinerary. Allen McCalmin Texas, USA Dear Mr. McCalmin People coming out of the resort usually have good stories to share. Editor

Global centre

Dear editor, I totally agree with Madam Ayesha Attique’s article that came out in your May 2012 edition about Dubai being the “global centre” of tourism. I’d like to stress too that more to the point, Dubai is also the global centre of commerce, owing likewise to its strategic location. It’s an amazing international city which somewhat differs from most other global cities in that a big chunk of the number of people living in Dubai are strangers from elsewhere around the world who have come to the city for work. I think that in itself is another Dubai

attraction. Heinz Becker Berlin, Gemany Dear Mr. Becker It’s really amazing how different people from different places come together, eat their own meal, practice their own beliefs and celebrate their own festivals—all in peaceful co-existence. Editor

Land of Smiles

Dear editor, It’s good to know that the Thai government has embarked on various ways to enhance tourism activities (Travel Arabia, Aug. 2012). I have been to some places in Thailand and I can say is that the country is a different world. Wishing the Thai government success in this endeavor. The falcon hunter hides in a deep hole in the sand, covered with branches. A string some hundred yards long, is run out through steel loops set in the sand. One end of this string goes to the catcher in his hole, and the other is fastened to a pigeon by a leg. At the corner a net is set across the sand in such a way that when the string is pulled, it swings upwards. When the catcher sees a falcon, he lets the pigeon go a little way and it flies trailing the string. The falcon takes a good look and if the catcher is well concealed, will stoop at the pigeon, which the catcher pulls back to the hoop. As the falcon seizes the pigeon and digs his beak into it, the catcher pulls it home to the ring and releases the net, which springs up and over the falcon and pigeon together. The catcher then comes up out of the hole and walks across to sort it all out.

The Training

alconry is an integral part of desert life and has been practiced for centuries. It is one of the unifying symbols of UAE. The majesty of the birds, the connection to traditional ways of life, the ritual and poetry of falconry are all close to the heart of every Emirati. Arising as a way of hunting in the desert, Falconry today is practiced as a sport in which the skill of the falconer is highly esteemed and the power and beauty of the falcon greatly treasured. The thrill of the chase, the trapping, training and hunting, followed by the celebrations, are all part of this exquisite experience. Apart from the potential danger involved, trapping and training of falcons requires skill, patience and a considerable amount of bravery. But, in order to have a close-up view of the power, grace and beauty of a falcon in flight all

such dangers become part of the attraction.

History Before the discovery of oil, in the Gulf, when there were no roads and communication systems, hunting expeditions were frequently used as a way for the tribal sheikhs to “tour” their territory and keep in touch with the latest developments in areas which were otherwise incommunicado. The sheikh would hunt during the day, then a desert majlis would be held around the campfire in the evenings, when the Bedouin would come to pay their respects and raise with him any matters of concern. These days falcons are more commonly bought than captured, but the fascinating art of acquiring a new falcon by the traditional methods is still used by those who want to satisfy their urge for a more direct and unadulterated

Once a falcon is acquired, the falconer sets about taming and training it. A leather hood is used to cover the falcon’s eyes and the bird is deprived of food in order to make it easier to tame. This little cap is made of decorated leather which covers the falcon’s eyes. This is because falcons have very sharp vision and the cap helps the falcon to slowly adjust to new environments. In the first few weeks, the falconer remains with the falcon all the time to establish as close a relationship as possible with the bird. The bird is restrained by tethers around its ankles. During the day the bird perches on the falconer’s leather sleeve while the falconer holds the tethers, and is always kept near the lure – a bundle of feathers. By night, the tethers are attached by a shorter cord to a swivel on a small mushroom-shaped wooden perch on a stake in the sand. This allows the falcon a certain freedom of movement, whilst ensuring that it cannot escape. The falconer names the bird and constantly calls to it so that it comes to recognize his voice from great distances. Initial training consists of removing the hood and allowing the bird to move from the perch to the falconer’s hand, whilst held by its leg restraints. Eventually the bird will begin to make short flights. The falconer will take the lure and some raw meat around 100 yards away from the bird and one of his associates will remove the bird’s hood, whilst the falconer calls the bird’s name and swings the lure. The bird flies over and catches the lure, whereupon the falconer rewards it with some meat. Later still, the training incorporates live prey, such as a tethered pigeon, which the falcon is allowed to swoop at before the falconer lures it away with meat. This part of the training is very important for Islamic hunters as it teaches the falcon not to kill its prey immediately. In order for the hunters to be able to eat the prey

in accordance with their beliefs, it must still be alive when its throat is cut and blood is drawn. Once properly trained, a falcon will hold a captured bustard for quite some time without killing it, although the hunters must reward it immediately with food for doing so.

Falconry conservation

The respect of the Emiraties for their country’s heritage shows that falconry has not only survived the process of modernization, but has prospered by incorporating technological advancements in the field. The Falconry and Conservation Gallery Abu Dhabi, The Nad al Shiba Falcon Centre, Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital, and Sharjah Natural History Museum are to name just a few organizations established for preserving, training and promoting the sport. The Zayed National Museum is planning to provide a linked outdoor arena where visitors would be able to experience live falconry as spectators, participants, and enthusiasts. There is now a very successful captive breeding program in the UAE for houbara, ensuring that this popular sport does not eliminate this species. In modern times, falconry in the UAE has incorporated new technology that benefits birds and owners alike. Falconry is strictly controlled 36 Travel Arabia

sponsible for returning falcons to the wild at the end of the annual hunting season. The project was initiated as a result of Sheikh Zayed’s desire that the falcons he used for hunting every year should not become completely domesticated, but should continue to live in their natural state. The selected birds are placed in isolation at the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital, where they are given full medical check-ups to ensure that only completely healthy birds enter the wild population. Each bird has a microchip inserted beneath its skin as an aid to future identification, and a numbered ring fitted on its leg as part of the Emirates Bird Ringing Scheme. The falcons are then put through a rigorous exercise programme to ensure that they are released in peak condition. They receive extra food to increase their weight and their chances of survival in their first weeks back in the wild. The birds are then transported from the UAE to an area along the migratory routes of other falcons, where they are released. This project also incorporates the latest technology to provide scientists with data regarding migratory patterns. Some of the falcons are fitted with miniature satellite transmitters so that their movements can be tracked.

Check your haggling skills

Try the souks It’s not unusual for a customer to bargain for half the price that the vendor has given and move on to the next shop.

I

n the old days, there were no paved roads to the malls. In fact, there were no malls at all! So what people did was gather together on a particular day and sell their wares—everything from poultry to rugs, silks, clothes, spices and jewellery. The merchants, realizing that the people just come and go after buying one of this and that, thought there should be entertainment to keep the customers around longer to make them buy some more. And so there were poetry reading, story-telling and music. Soon, some of the merchants started traveling in caravans to villages or Bedouin camps where they would sell their merchandise and, as well, buy new items to be sold on their next stop. Thus started the evolution of free-market capitalism in the Arab world that has become to be known as the souk—Arabic for marketplace. Later, due to the importance of the marketplace and the growth of cities, the locations of souks shifted to urban centers. Today, some souks are right inside the malls!

Bargain

Despite the modern hue that souks have taken on, the old ways live.

Back then, vendors dictated the going price for their products and it’s up to the buyer to strike a win-win deal. Today, it’s pretty much the same set-up with souks having remained to be a bargain-hunter’s paradise. In some traditional souks, it’s not unusual for a customer to bargain for half the price that the vendor has given, then walk away to another shop and continue fishing for the best price if the first shopkeeper did not budge. Traders of a given commodity—textiles or gold for instance—all sell in the same souk, thus ensuring a competitive market.

Kinds

Different kinds of souks have developed through the ages, among them the seasonal ones, which are regularly held over a certain period of time. There are annual souks with activities so widely encompassing that to call them a souk is simply an understatement. There also are the weekly souks or what in the West would be the weekend street markets which usually have open spaces specifically designated for them in the cities like parks. In contrast to the seasonals, “permanent” souks has become more common and involve tenancy as stalls and shops are rented out. These permanent souks eventually caused the demise of caravan souks and the old-fashioned gardenTravel Arabia 39

variety weekend souks. In Arabic cities, almost each neighbourhood has a local souk; the main souk however is a central marketplace where textiles, jewellery, spices, wooden sculptures and other valuable goods as well as money changers were arranged in a line. A variation of this has become to be known as “city centers” where brand names and fast food chains have taken over instead. The souk is divided into small units, each usually located in a few narrow streets and named after the product it specialized in, thus the term gold souk, the fabric souk, the spice souk, and so on.

Abu Dhabi souks

When in the UAE capital, Abu Dhabi, visit the fish souk at Mina Zayed, near Abu Dhabi’s main port area, and experience the way traditional business is done where fishermen load their catch on to the quayside. Nearby is the Al Mina Fruit & Vegetable Souk where one can have a wide range of options and buy by the kilo or the box. Also near the main port area is the carpet souk where Yemeni mattresses and machine made carpets are but bargains can be found if one knows what he or she is looking for. Known as the Central or Old Souk, the Al Ain Souk is a great place to explore, savour the 40 Travel Arabia

local atmosphere and practice bargaining skills. There are also two outdoor markets—the Souk Al Bawadi, which offers traditional items, and Souk Al Qaws which has banks, money exchange outlets and travel offices among others. The two souks are attached to the huge Bawadi Mall in Al Ain. Souk Al Qaws features shops of a practical nature set among unique architecture, with over 40 service outlets including banks, money exchanges and travel agents, while Souk Al Bawadi has more of a heritage feel, with over 50 shops selling traditional items and souvenirs. Also in Al Ain is Souk Al Zafarana which has everything from traditional garments, incense or spices, henna or oud, or dallah (Arabian coffee pots). Dubai souks originated ages ago when boats or dhows from the neighboring countries as well as across the seas—India, China and those in the Far East—unloaded their cargoes at the Creek to sell them. Remnants of this economic activity can be see throughout Old Dubai which still has a number of souks scattered all over.

Dubai souks

One of Old Dubai’s attractions are the gold souks. There are just one too many so much so that it has been known that some tourists actu-

ally travel to Dubai to see the shops and buy one or two gold danglers or necklaces. There is also an abundance of textile souks which feature radiant silks and a host of other fabrics on Al Fahidi Street in Bur Dubai. Spices? They are all across from Bur Dubai’s gold souks where one can purchase fresh spices and have them packed in quaint little pouches. Perfume souks are located along Sikkat Al Khail Street in Dubai. More modern—and some times, pricey— souks are Souk Madinat Jumeirah, Souk Al Bahar, Khan Murjan, Meena Bazaar, Naif Souk, which have a vibrant mix of past and present.

Sharjah souks

Sharjah, the cultural capital of the UAE, has its share of exciting souks as well, among them the famous Central Souk which opened in 1979 and has over 600 shops that offers everything from precious gems to Arabic perfumes, Afghani embroideries, embroidered Syrian table cloths, antiques, copper trays and carpets from Afghanistan, Turkey, Iran, Kashmir, Pakistan and anywhere between Central Asia and China. Other souks include Souk Al Arsah, probably the oldest market place in the UAE, designed with solid wooden doors, beautiful coral brick walls and hanging lanterns; Souk Al Bahar an authentic old bazaar also known as

In the yonder days when people did not have malls or online stores, there were open-air marketplaces where anyone with something to sell or buy comes. And there were music, poetry and food— like a weekend village fiesta, indeed. Souk Mohamed Bin Saqr which runs parallel to the Sharjah Creek; and Souk Al Ghuwair in Rolla which is divided into markets selling an odd mix of products.

Moroccan souks In Morocco, souks have taken up entire city blocks and have developed such that narrow alleyways make up for a maze of interconnected paths with shops next to each other. This makes one’s high chances of getting lost too much of a tempt, actually, to give up the thought just getting in without worrying where to get out from the middle of a frenzied chaos. The stalls have on display everything from traditional Moroccan carpets and scarves, to sacks of exotic herbs and spices, fresh fruits and slaughtered meat from local farmers. Moroccan souks are also places for sociocultural functions like settling disputes and debts, even drawing up a wedding plan or simply gossiping. Like in most other souks, Morocco’s are also segregated according to specialties such that meat souks are in one alley, and antiques are in another, and so on.

Beirut and Cairo Beirut’s souks are in a major commercial district in the city’s central district. It has more than 200 shops and is considered Beirut’s largest shopping area. The souks have been rebuilt following years of conflict. Nevertheless landmarks were maintained in the course of reconstruction. In Cairo is Khan el-Khalili, which dates back to the 14th century and is now considered a major attraction in the Islamic district of the city. The souk was built on the site of the Za’afram Tomb, burial grounds of the city’s founders—the Fatimid Caliphs. Also in the vicinity are the Al-Hussein Mosque and the Al-Azhar University. 42 Travel Arabia

Ur

Discover the ‘native land of the civilised lords’

Efforts are underway to fully excavate this ‘Mecca of tourism,’ as one Italian diplomat has described the site, and develop it into a destination in the likes of Egypt’s Giza. 44 Travel Arabia

Around 3800 BC, in what is now Iraq, was a thriving metropolis with paved roads, schools, tree-lined avenues to the style of Haussmanian Paris, and a three-tiered temple at the center from which public administration was conducted—a textbook theocratic socialist society in what was then Mesopotamia, where people didn’t own anything because everything was owned by the gods. That temple, called ziggurat or a terraced pyramid of successively receding stories, is the most visible remains of what once was the Sumerian city-state of Ur in the present-day Tell el-Muqayyar in Iraq’s Dhi Qar Governorate. Ur was excavated from the 1920s to the 1930s by

British archaeologist Charles Leonard Woolley. A large portion has remained buried. The Sumerian population, rootword: Sumer, which approximately translates to “native land of the civilized lords,” prospered in the region. According to historians, Ur was a great urban centre of the Sumerian civilisation and had remained an important city until its conquest by Alexander the Great a few centuries before Christ. It started to decline around 550 BC and became totally uninhabited after about 500 BC. Efforts are underway from several quarters, including historians and preservation societies, to fund a huge excavation project and develop

the site into a tourist attraction. They contend that the buried ancient city is so big a discovery it could easily overshadow Egypt’s pyramids.

Treasures

Researchers believe Woolley, who painstakingly dug the tombs with the help of his wife Katherine and one other assistant, was only able to scratch the surface. It’s been also noted that hardly 20 percent of the site has been excavated, mainly by American and British archaeologists working at the site when the diggings finally resumed in 2005. “Much remains to be done, and an endeav-

our must be authorised together with the central government if Iraq wants to benefit from its enormous potential as a Mecca of tourism,” Anna Prouse, an Italian diplomat in charge of a regional rebuilding team in the Iraqi province of Dhi Qar, told British media. In addition to Ur, the province has 47 other sites “of great archaeological value,” she said. Prouse said authorities do not have the budget to start large-scale archaeological excavations as the priority is on rebuilding public infrastructure in war-ravaged Iraq. In May 2009, the United States Army, which seized Ur during the war, handed it back to Iraqi

authorities.

Discoveries

Woolley’s discoveries at Ur from 1922 to 1934, which happened at around the same time King Tut’s tomb in Egypt was found, brought more attention to scientific archaeology. At one point, news of the discoveries caused popular British writer Agatha Christie to visit the excavation where she eventually met one of Woolley’s assistants, archaeologist Max Mallowan, who later became her husband. Woolley’s finds, encapsulated in the theme, “The Royal Tombs of Ur,” went on a successful Travel Arabia 45

traveling exhibition throughout the US in 2000. It involved 150 objects from the permanent collection of the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, which, with the British Museum, sponsored his excavations. Woolley’s finds were divided between the British Museum, the University of Pennsylvania Museum, and the National Museum in Baghdad. Those in Baghdad were reportedly looted during the 2003 Gulf War. Included in the exhibit were the famous Great Lyre from the so-called King’s Grave, its gold-and-lapis bull’s head and inlaid shell plaque attached to a re-created wooden frame, and the famous Ram-in-the-Thicket, a statuette of a goat standing and nibbling leaves of a tree or bush. According to Ellen Herscher, contributing editor to ARCHAEOLOGY, a publication of the Archaeological Institute of America, Woolley opened more than 2,000 tombs at Ur, and conducted extensive excavations of the ziggurat and other large-scale buildings. “Systematic exploration of the so-called Royal Cemetery, dating mainly to the Early Dynastic IIIA period (ca. 2600-2500 B.C.), began during the 1926-1927 season,” Herscher said, adding that of the 660 tombs dug by Woolley,

Of the 660 tombs dug, 16 were that of royalties. 16 were of such wealth and complexity that he considered them to be the final resting places of the city’s royalty.

Queen Pu-abi’s burial

An artist’s rendition of the ancient city 46 Travel Arabia

According to Herscher, many objects in the exhibition came from the tomb of Queen Pu-abi, one of the richest burials. “Jewelry predominates; a vast quantity of beads and ornaments made of gold, silver, carnelian, lapis lazuli, and shell were found,” she said. Many other people were buried with her, in a form of human sacrifice—52. Around the ziggurat were four other structures and temples; many houses have also been found outside the perimeter. At the time of her death, which was around 2550 BC, burials of royalties included human sacrifices meant to provide a royal retinue to accompany the deceased into the Afterlife. By Woolley’s account, Queen Pua-bi’s tomb was one of the most elaborate of these royal graves, noting that her underground complex started with a sloping passage that led into a large pit, with the vaulted stone burial chamber at one end. Through his careful excavation, Woolley was able to reconstruct the course of the grand funeral which painted a grim scene from something out of a Stephen King movie: It starts with the queen’s lavishly dressed body in her

spectacular golden headdress, being carried upon an open wooden bier down into the tomb and placed in the burial chamber. Food, drink, and lavish personal items were placed with her— “grave goods,” as they were called. Three attendants then came with her into the burial chamber, two crouched by the bier and one lying a little apart. They were drugged or killed before the tomb chamber was sealed up. The tomb’s chamber door was then blocked even as a grand procession of courtiers, including soldiers and male and female servants, went down into the open pit outside the burial chamber. Driven or backed down the slope, chariots drawn by oxen joined everyone in the pit. Lastly, a guard of soldiers form up at the entrance. Each person had a little cup of clay, dipped it into great copper pot, and drank poison or a strong sedative. One musician was found still having her hands on her instrument. All told, scholars believe Ur will certainly make for a major tourist attraction at par with Egypt’s Giza, especially considering that the treasures found have been compared to the riches from the tomb of the Egyptian boy-king Tut, and, more to the point, 1,000 years older. Lost City

48 Travel Arabia

Just when you thought you’ve done it all Somewhere in the Golden Triangle, in an island that disappeared when the Mekong River changed its course, lies what remains of an ancient civilization. And Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle can take you there.

B

een there, done that? Think again. At Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle in Chiang Rai, Thailand, the “great outdoors” takes on a new twist as guests stay at jungle tents reminiscent of 19thcentury adventure expeditions with handcrafted furniture, hardwood floors and traditional thatched roofs. Activities include visits to a hill tribe, “foraging” expeditions, a three-countries-one-day excursion, and—hold your breath—a trip to a lost city. Might say this one’s something out of an Indiana Jones or Lara Croft Tom Raider movie but seriously, it’s for real—and it’s waiting for you: The Lost City of Souvannakhomkham. Souvannakhomkham is located on a former island which disappeared when the Mekong Travel Arabia 49

River changed its course. It is in the Bokei province of Laos and involves a drive along the Mekong to the town of Chiang Kong from where a wooden boat crosses the river to the Lao border town of Huayxai.

Ancient

It is an ancient site with vestiges of the historical city. According to initial surveys, in an area of 10,000 hectares, there are 44 archaeological vestiges and brick constructions such as temples, stupas, Buddha images, water reservoirs and other constructions. After clearing immigration, a bouncy, dusty drive of around one hour leads to the place, apparently lost in maize fields. Crumbling Buddha statues and chedis (temples) from the 16th century await explorers who venture this far, although sadly, extensive looting over the years has left the place in a state of disrepair. The only vestige left from the looting by Lao and Thai bandits, which attests to the high level of artistry and craftsmanship of epoch, is the Buddha image seated in the meditation posture, made of bricks and plaster, the statue is 7.22 metres high, not including the ushnisha, the three dimensional oval at the top of the Buddha’s head. Officials said the statue can be considered one of the largest Buddha images in Southeast Asia. There is little in the way of explanation and this area is firmly off the tourist trail, but those with a deep interest in ancient Buddhist sites will find this a rewarding adventure—and those who do venture this far will likely imagine themselves as a modern-day Indiana Jones as they have the whole site to themselves to explore.

Mystery

The Golden Triangle, the meeting point of Thailand, Burma (Myanmar) and Laos, has long been a place of mystery and intrigue for adventurous travellers. With the Mekong River and misty mountains providing a backdrop to this area rich in fascinating culture and natural beauty, Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle, 15 air-conditioned tends with heating and fast wifi, is the perfect place to let loose one’s inner explorer. After a rendezvous at Chiang Rai airport or another meeting point, Four Seasons transports guests via Land Rover to the fabled Mekong River. The final leg of the journey is by boat along the Ruak River, which today may only be traversed during daylight hours given its strategic border position. Once at the camp, everything is taken care of: a full schedule of mahout training, a taste of the signature dish—Pla Kra Bok, fish curry cooked in green bamboo—and group activities, it is the only completely all-inclusive Four Seasons in the world. Other unique dining experiences include sunrise breakfast on the Camp’s peak, jungle and riverside picnics, cocktails on a bamboo raft and a private candlelit dinner at the Elephant Camp. 50 Travel Arabia

Insider tips 1. Stamp Collecting, Four Seasons Style – There’s always something exciting about a new passport stamp, but getting three in one day? Not often easily done. Here in the Golden Triangle, Four Seasons Tented Camp lets guests collect stamps, Four Seasons style, with the “Three Countries, One Day” excursion. Starting with a private long-tail boat ride from the Tented Camp to the Golden Triangle – the actual point where the three countries meet in the Mekong River - the boat will then zoom across the waters to Don Xao, an island on the Lao side, where guests can take a walk around the village, perhaps stopping to purchase traditional Lao handicrafts and maybe also trying the local tipple, Beer Lao. Next, head back across the river into Thailand and the historical town of Chiang Saen. Formerly the centre of power of the Lanna Kingdom, Chiang Saen is home to ancient temples, chedis, and a bustling market. Finally, drive through the surrounding countryside to the northernmost point of Thailand, the border town of Mae Sai, and walk across the border into Burma and the town of Tachilek. 2. Making Merit – Key to the Buddhist way of life, making merit, or tamboon, means doing good to achieve happiness and a peaceful life, and is believed to be a way to attain nirvana. A trip to the temple of Wat Pra That Chom Kitti, where a sacred relic of the Lord Buddha’s forehead is contained in a golden pagoda, is the ideal place to make merit. The temple, part of an ancient monastery built around the 10th century, is a favourite of Thais from all over the country. There are many different ways to tamboon, but a popular way is to offer food, fruit, drinks and flowers to the monks, who will in turn offer a blessing and tie cotton yarn around the merit-maker’s wrist to symbolize the removal of sin. 3. A Short Walk in the Golden Triangle – The mountains of the Golden Triangle region offer great opportunities for hiking, whether it’s a challenging uphill climb or a more leisurely stroll. One trail offering insights into the local hill tribe way of life – and practically no tourists - is through the Houi Mak Leim National Park. The first part of the hike heads uphill through beautiful natural surroundings to visit Ban Ja Jor, a Lahu hill tribe village - the Lahu women are known for being highly skilled in embroidery, while the men are known to be skilled hunters. Next, hike for an hour through the countryside to Ban A Pae, an Akha hill tribe village, enter through the spirit gate revered by the tribe, and pass by the Akha giant swing used for New Year celebrations, harvest festivals and other ceremonies. Akha women traditionally 52 Travel Arabia

wear distinctive colourful costume, including a heavy headdress decorated with silver beads. Next, a short hike through the village leads to the Huay Keaw waterfall and on through groves of towering bamboo and tea plantations to a Chinese village for a short rest at a tea terrace to try the local brew. And after all that exertion, a soothing dip in the natural hot spring waters close to the banks of the Kok river beckons, before a private long-tail boat can be chartered for the return journey down the river back to the city of Chiang Rai.

4. Crafty Business – Northern Thailand has long been famous for its local crafts, including textiles, weaving, wood-carving, silverwork and paper-making, as well as more contemporary ceramics and art works. Four Seasons Tented Camp offers guests the chance to embark on a Craft Route tour, including visits to the Doi Tung Cottage Industries Centre, a handicrafts training and job creation centre that is part of the Princess Mother’s Royal Project sustainable alternative livelihood development initiative. Topped off with a stop at a local shop renowned

for the high quality of its antique textiles, hill tribe artifacts, beadwork and carvings, all in all the Craft Route usually leads to a rather successful day’s shopping. 5. Becoming an Elephant Researcher – See what it’s like to do someone else’s job for a morning by joining the new Elephant Researcher Program alongside the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation and Think Elephants International. The studies are aimed at gaining a better understanding of how elephants use their senses to navigate their natural world, how they work together to obtain food, how they communicate with each other to solve problems, and how they understand their social relationships with each other. 6. Anyone for Polo? – Each year, to celebrate National Thai Elephant Day on March 13, Four Seasons Tented Camp in conjunction with the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation offers guests the chance to learn the basics of the “sport of kings” and to take part in a real live polo tournament. After completing basic elephant training, newly-certified mahouts will have the chance to take their training one step further by learning the basics and swinging their mallets in an elephant polo match. Once guests 54 Travel Arabia

have learned the golden rules of safety for interacting with elephants, and can tell their pai (go straight) from their baen (turn), and their how (stop) from their map lung (sit down), elephant polo training can begin in earnest. 7. Chartering a Helicopter – There are many ways to discover the region, whether it’s bouncing along in the back of a tuk-tuk or gliding over the waters of the river in a long-tail boat, but nothing really compares to seeing the Golden Triangle from the air onboard a private helicopter. Views of hills and mountains covered with thick forests of majestic trees, the Mekong and its tributaries snaking into the distance, and hillside golden temples glittering in the sun are just some of the treasures awaiting those who explore the region by air. Four Seasons Tented Camp can arrange sightseeing charters, helicopter airport pick-ups, or helicopter transfers to Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai. 8. Foraging for Lunch - A stay at Four Seasons doesn’t usually involve foraging for food, but at the Tented Camp there’s a program that lets guests do just that - with delicious results. Accompanied by staff well-versed in the botany of the region, guests will discover that the natural surroundings of the Camp are not only full of

natural beauty, but also full of tasty, healthy plants that can feed and heal. Depending on the season, discoveries on these herbal walks may include young fern shoots (perfect when stir-fried, and also good for lowering blood pressure), bai bua bok (a rich green leaf with antibacterial, anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties that is also delicious served as a side to phad thai noodles), and wild torch ginger flower or dok dhara (effective in aiding skin diseases, and delicious when served in a salad with peanuts and shallots), among many, many others. 9. Floating Down the River on a Bamboo Raft - After all of those adventures, why not enjoy a relaxing, leisurely float down the river on a bamboo raft, a glass of bubbles in hand, with electric blue kingfishers flitting in and out of view? One of the most peaceful ways to experience the Ruak River, which forms the border between Burma and Thailand, is by lazing on the Tented Camp’s bamboo raft, which will take guests on a journey between two countries and two different time zones. The perfect start to the day for a Champagne breakfast as the mists rise from the water, or a spectacular way to enjoy sunset, when the white egrets make their journey home to roost in the trees, following the path of the river. A truly unforgettable sight.

Chedi means a temple where symbolic artifacts and secrets are kept. The Chedi Chiang Mai is what would then be your sanctum sanctorum in a city built by a river whose churning waves still evoke silhouettes and echoes of the men and women who had lived by its banks.

T

he Chedi Chiang Mai. Chiang Mai is the “Northern Capital of Thailand.” The 569-kilometer long Mai Ping River is the province’s lifeline springing forth from the Suthep. Chedi is Thai for “temple,” a place of solemn serenity. The Chedi Chiang Mai is what would then be your sanctum sanctorum in a city built by a river whose churning waves still evoke silhouettes and echoes of the men and women who had lived by its banks, and worked together and rejoiced on the bounties it has been providing through the ages. Now, how even more exhilarating would it be to be viewing a modern-day film on a modern-day gizmo in a modern-day lodging with ageless Mai Ping and Suthep smiling? The Chedi Chiang Mai is an elegant retreat for an 84-room deluxe resort with a spa and restaurant located in the centre of Chiang Mai, the site of which was a compound of the former British Consulate in the province. 58 Travel Arabia

The Consulate building, a colonial wooden structure constructed in circa 1913, now houses the hotel’s restaurant, which offers a choice of Thai, Indian and international cuisines; and the Terrace Bar & Cigar Lounge, which exudes a relaxed atmosphere with casual day bed seating and panoramic views of the Mae Ping. Rooms and suites at The Chedi feature muted tones, teak flooring and private courtyards or balconies. Flat-screen cable TVs, free Wi-Fi and a coffee machine are provided. En suite bathrooms offer rainshowers. The Club Suites at this luxury Chiang Mai resort, are twice the size of the Deluxe Rooms with large sitting areas and spacious open balconies. For Northern Thai specialties, innovative Pacific Rim and other dishes, head to The Restaurant in a colonial-style house. The charming Terrace Bar and Lounge serves a steady stream of refreshments, tea, cocktails and snacks. Suite guests at this luxury Thailand resort can kick back at the Chedi Club Lounge,

serving breakfast, afternoon tea, cocktails and canapés. The Spa at The Chedi is a perfect sanctuary. Other facilities include a swimming pool, fitness club and boutique. The hotel’s two meeting rooms have high-tech equipment and wireless Internet is available Another nice thing about the resort hotel is that it’s a mere 15 minutes ride from the airport and a brisk walk to the popular night markets that offer anything from “I Love Chiang Mai” shirts to batik pants, wall decors and all. It is also just around 30 minutes away from the Mae Rim – Samuang Road which is lined with activities like ATV rides, bungee jumps, and an elephant farm among others. The deluxe resort also offers car rental services that can come with a driver for a guided tour of so requested. The Chedi Chiang Mai is on 123 Charoenprathet Road T. Changklan A. Maung. From left, Kareem Ashmawy from Egypt, Chef Mohamad Ammouri from Lebanon and Chef Moatesm Al Aasmi from Syria in their kitchen at The Address Dubai Marina.

Food and Ramadan tradition Three Arabic chefs of The Address Dubai Marina take us on a trip to their countries, sharing their insights about breaking fast. Ramadan in Cairo is always special in its very traditional way. People, as in anywhere else, wait for the Lunar confirmation to begin first day of Ramadan, then you hear the Taraweeh Prayer calls in all mosques for the recitation of the Qur’an. A few hours later, the first Sohour begins, with a special guy (we call him “Messaharati”) banging on a drum in the streets calling for Sohour to each and every person in his neighborhood, especially kids. 60 Travel Arabia

Small confession: I used to make him call me by my nickname. Just imagine, it’s 3:00 am and a man is drumming your name, one of the coolest things ever! Ramadan in Cairo means the very special Egyptian Ramadan lantern called “Fanous” in all forms: big glassy ones hanging on big buildings, restaurants, entertainment ventures; numerous plastic ones of all shapes, and thousands of paper lantern hanging over threads on the streets. Houses and mosques are also decorated with

many small colorful lamps. Ramadan in Cairo also means “Konafa” and “Atayef,” which means there is almost no fridge that does not have plenty of yogurt cups and buttermilk bottles! Taraweeh prayer is an occasion where extended families can meet, if they live close to each other, to pray in the same mosque; neighbors socialize, children play, and friends can be made. Inviting people over for Iftar is a very popular custom in Egypt. True, it ends up as a competition between women of the family for who cooks better, but it still is usually a good chance to meet cousins you hardly see, nephews and nieces you know nothing about, and old family members. Iftar, the evening meal after a day of fasting, is often done as a community, with people gathering to break their fast together. Iftar is done right after Maghrib (sunset time). Many Muslims believe that giving someone food for Iftar as a form of charity is very rewarding and that it was practiced by Prophet Muhammad. During Iftar drinks are also served popular of which are jallab, date juice, kamaralbeen, tamarind , and yogart made with ice and dry mint.. Lentil soup and harira soup usually starts the meal, followed by salads like mezzeh fattouch, taboula vine leaves, houmms, moutable, kibbeh nayeh and much more. There are so many different Arabic dishes served for the main course. There are also some very popular warm mezzeh dishes, kebbeh, fattayer sambousik, chesse rokakat, and makanik lamb or sujuk; and from the oven, manakish mix zattar, chesse, fatayer. The main course should have one kind of rice, usually saffron, and lamb ouzi (this is a whole lamb slow cooked until the meat almost falls off the bone), lamb freekeh, fish harrah, chiken with potato, beef khalaya and fateh. For dessert, we have a lot of famous um ali kounafa, katayef, koalaj, znoud alset, shaybyaat. Souhor, for its part, is a light meal taken before the fasting start. It’s like an early breakfast that starts from 12 am till 3:45 am. Muslims eat at this time to be able to fast. Souhor meals dishes are manakaesh, zattar chesse, manakish, turkey ham, lamb bajeen assorted chesse akawi, shanklish, labnah ball, labnah plain sahlab, and a hot milk or some Ramadan juice drinks. Dubai being a cultural hub is known for its diverse cuisine altitudes and what better way to have the most of it than by bringing Egypt, Syria and Lebanon together in one kitchen? The three seasoned chefs work in harmony with their skills to promote Arabic offerings at The Address Dubai Marina, providing guests with an experience to remember.

TRANQUIL MOMENTS

The Jasmine Spa at the Grand Millennium

As I step out of the elevator on the 18th floor of the Grand Millennium, I am greeted by some of the friendliest employees in Dubai immediately endearing me to the Jasmine Spa. It smells heavenly with flickering candles lighting the silent corridors and warm cosy rooms. My treatment is the Back to Nature package which is a well-thought out combination of body scrub, hot stone massage and express facial. But before I start, I have time to enjoy the sauna and steam room which are located conveniently close to the changing rooms along with an ice fountain spitting out crushed ice. After ten minutes in the pine clad sauna, I bravely approach the ice fountain rubbing the ice slivers all over to stimulate circulation and tighten the skin before stepping into the pristine white steam room. The real gem of the spa though is the separate Jacuzzi that is located in its own area looking out over the Sheikh Zayed Road and beyond to the Palm Jumeirah. There is no need for window coverings this high up so the view 72 Travel Arabia

is uninterrupted and the bubbling water set at just the right temperature to make this a truly unique experience. After drying off, my therapist for the afternoon appears to lead me to one of the six treatment rooms, the delightfully named lemongrass room, to begin my treatment. I start with the pomegranate salt scrub which not only smells divinely fruity but is just fine enough not to scratch my very delicate skin, and, after a quick shower to wash it off, my skin already feels baby smooth. The scrub is followed by a hot stone massage with potent almond oil where heated basalt stones are placed on key points of the body and used for massaging muscles. Hot stone massages are highly effective at promoting deep muscle relaxation improving circulation and alleviating stress. But quite apart from the therapeutic effects of the hot stone massage the sheer pleasure of lying supine with warm stones resting gently on my body is unbelievably relaxing. The final part of the package is the facial

which uses Maria Galland products. After a thorough cleansing with ultra-light cleansing fluid and a gentle exfoliating scrub the deep penetrating mask is followed by a serum which is thoroughly massaged in using gentle strokes before being finished with a light and nongreasy moisturiser. I am escorted then to the relaxation room with its three loungers positioned in front of floor to ceiling windows with views out over the ocean to enjoy a green tea and a few more minutes of relaxation before reluctantly leaving the warm embrace of the Jasmine Spa. Named after the delicately scented flower the Jasmine Spa is a well-thought out facility with everything grouped closely together so there is no traversing long distances to go between changing room, treatment rooms and relaxation rooms. Good for: when you have time to linger. This is a spa that encourages you to stay a while.

OUR FACEBOOK MEET THE travelling fashionista sure that I have a good book to read during my travels as well for those moments when I’m relaxing. Name three places in the world that you’re really raving to see. Turkey – the Ottoman Empire has fascinated me for years and this is one country I would love to travel to. Zanzibar is another destination I would love to explore – the spice island has a lot of Arab connection, with history that links it to the early Muslim settlements; so this would certainly be a place to see. I would also love to visit San Diego, USA.

Fatma bin Fahad Who’s on OUR FACEBOOK ? The fashionista founder and designer of the Al Mayyasa label in person.

Some would immediately hit the pool or the spa or bar. Others would jump off the road with their videocams and digicams. How about you? My first exploration is usually the area where I’m staying at –just to get a feel of the place—to discover what’s where because it’s important to know your immediate vicinity. I tend to look for the basics, making sure there’s a grocery and a restaurant nearby for those late food purchases. I usually go towards one direction to find out what’s that area has to offer and then change directions to find out what’s on the other side. Accordingly, I plan my city experience. The next thing is obviously to find out about the tours as well as the shopping arcades. What excites you when traveling? Each new destination brings its own excitement. I usually do a bit of research to find out what the country has to offer. The culture and history usually takes my breath away – the architecture, the buzzing streets and food. So, I usually make sure I have a camera handy to capture the little things that others take for granted. Being a woman, shopping is also another addiction, so when trav-

‘I tend to get paranoid and unsure if everything is packed so I always double check the list just before I head out.’ eling I’m constantly looking for places to shop. What is your dream destination? My dream travel experience is a cruise on the Caribbean from the Bahamas to the Gulf of Mexico and also Hawai’i. Everything’s already packed except for five important items. Having only enough room for three, which will you leave behind? The five important thing items are medication for emergency, sewing kit, wet wipes, hand sanitizer, cables and Cords, etc., and camera. I will leave behind the wet wipes and cables. When was the last time you travelled? Where? Six months ago, I travelled to Qatar. It was a short trip but it was mostly a business trip, not a holiday. I’m looking forward to an Italian holiday later this summer where I’m hoping to explore the different cities that I haven’t been to yet. I’m still planning the trip which will be for over two weeks. Italy has a lot to offer--fashion, food and culture. So there’s plenty to see and experience. I’m looking forward to that. What drives you to travel—food? Shopping? Sightseeing? Shopping and Sightseeing… and some times food. It’s really the complete experience not just one element – a combination of the offerings make the total experience memorable.

Do you prefer travelling alone or with group? Traveling alone allows you to explore the destination in your own time at your own pace without the stress of a group. Traveling in a group means there are multiple decisions to be made as well as constant distraction because you are obliged to agree with the majority. You got everything ready—bags, travel papers and all. What is the last thing you’d do before heading out? I tend to get paranoid and unsure if everything is packed so I always double check the list just before I head out. Camera is something I often miss and I have now made a point to pack it at the very beginning just in case. I always make 74 Travel Arabia
