A Number is Worth a Thousand Words. In an effort to gain uniformity throughout the country and to reinforce a National Style of Play modeled after the U.S. National Team, Coach Jurgen Klinsmann has instituted the number system shown in the diagram.

Looking beyond the number, the number ‘position’ and who is playing it, can tell a lot about what type of a soccer player (s)he is within a particular system of play. The USA’s formation in previous games have been generally a 1-4-3-3 as shown in the diagram. How does this help me as a coach? It will be a great addition to your learning and your coaching tool kit. As you develop your own coaching style and your players’ playing style, you can now reference the number when talking positions and allow your point to be ‘visualized’ within a known system of play. It also provides a base point of reference for the role and the functions of playing a particular number or position.

“Teach Like a Champion” and “Practice Perfect” Doug Lemov is the author of “Teach Like a Champion: 49 Techniques that Put Students on the Path to College” and co-author of “Practice Perfect: 42 Rules for Getting Better at Getting Better,” a study of the art of practicing. He works with the U.S. Soccer Federation to improve coaching through better teaching. Olympic Development Program (ODP) Kansas Youth Soccer’s Olympic Development Program continues to evolve and change to best serve and meet the needs of our players, clubs, and leagues. The ODP mission statement “to identify and train players for State, Regional, and National Teams” continues to be the driving force to adapt to best reach these goals. CLICK HERE to see the overview and changes to the programming for Kansas ODP in 2014-15. On July 18-20, 2014 Kansas ODP will host its inaugural ODP Club ID Showcase. This showcase is for the ELITE Club Teams within the U12-U17 Boys & Girls Age Groups for the upcoming 2014-15 seasonal year and teams will be “INVITED” to participate.
