ehind the tidy huts, on the outskirts of the village, lays a place so mysterious only seemingly otherworldly beings like the tribe shaman dare to stay there. This is where she goes to negotiate between the weirdness of the wild and the comfort of culture. From here, you can stare into the darkness of the entangled woods, and feel the icy fear for what unruly beasts that might be lurking back at you from the shades. As your imagination gets the better of you, the urge to rush back into the familiar village might finally overtake your trembling body. But one day it’s different. You know there is only one way to go: forward. Through the thorny branches and thick walls of spiky pines, right into all that is unknown, strange — and full of adventurous possibility.
4
You can never fully prepare for such a journey, yet Team 19 feels that their time has come. The village they are leaving behind has raised them welll. It has
allowed them to climb the trees, follow the rugged paths that runs close to the border, and it has encouraged them to stay out long after dark. They have learned from the wanderers that went before them: the fearless people with a certain glow in their eyes, who can share many a story about the beauties of the uncharted land. Their hearts beat fast, as they stand here, but not from fear. It is the exciting anticipation that comes from having wilderness running in your blood. They are ready. Ready to meet the beasts, and befriend them. Ready to find a clearing where they can plant the wild plant they have been nurturing for the last year. Where they can let it grow into a wondrous tree that can nurture their life, and allow the roots to entangle themselves into the roots of others. Ready to become part of the wilderness. We invite you to experience their wonderful vegetations. Come and smell, taste and touch the new wild flora, and send Team 19 on their way. Who knows, you may even know of a place just right for sprouting such untamed beauty?

earest Reader, Welcome to the 2015 Kaospilot Graduation Catalogue! With these pages we are proud to offer you a peek into the creations, learning and journeys undertaken by the 37 members of Team 19, during their final year at the school. It is a peek not only into their projects, but also into who they are as people. As characters.
It is also a peek into the intense, varied and (let’s face it) sometimes opaque world of the Kaospilot school and community. As a school, we are met with many questions, mostly out of curiosity: “So what is the school about?”; “What is it the students learn?”; “What is a graduated Kaospilot actually capable of doing?” As a team leader and curriculum designer, I love nothing more than listing tools, methods and learning outcomes and citing obscure pedagogical theories. In this vein, the first section of the book offers the beginnings of an answer to the above questions. You will see a brief conceptual and “official” overview of what the education is about: the vision and aims of the schools, and an overview of the three years. That might take care of some of the facts, and begin to set the tone, but to truly answer these vexing questions, there is no substitute for sharing the stories

about the students and their work. They comprise the bulk of the book. Here you will encounter a diverse array of projects and concepts, from efforts to green the deserts of Jordan, to cracking the code of making a living as a wonder-based performance artist, to providing robust platforms that support female urban artists, in Stockholm. The 30 plus projects and the processes that brought the students to graduation, are as diverse as the students themselves. We invite you to pour over the pages and meet the characters that have thrown themselves into a myriad of fields in order to offer something of value to the World and to test their mettle. Within this diversity, there are some common traits and qualities that I have seen the students exhibit in this their work: perseverance, generosity, and courage to name a few.
Pete Sims Team Leader for Team 19, Head of Research and Development Aarhus May 25th, 2015
The students and their projects have been supported by a huge and diverse community of teachers, guides, mentors, partners: a true village. Of the over 70 wise and capable teachers, that have taught and guided the team, we have invited a small group, along with some staff members, to contribute to this edition. This stellar group of guides hail from four continents and span across five decades, and have shared essayes, full of reflections, inquries and advice to the team, and broader community, as well as some reflections on the theme of this year’s book and exhibition. And what a theme! Conceived and penned by my colleague and dear friend, Morten Nottelmann, you are invited to join Team 19 and the rest of the KP community, “At the Brink of the Wilderness.” I could not think of a more appropriate image, as the team prepares to graduate and enter a new and “less domesticated” stretch in the path. It is not not only an apt image for the students, but also for the school as whole. Just like new Kaospilot students on the first day of school, it was almost 25 years ago that Kaospilot school arrived into this World with a wild and raw energy. Without this audacious spirit, the idea to offer a new way working, creating and learning and would have remained just that: an idea. Through the countless experiments and discoveries along the way, we have learned a lot and even gained a few threads of wisdom (along with the scars to prove it). The chaos has turned more into complexity, and there is much to be said for that. It’s the space which has allowed us to harvest the fruits of all of those experiments and expeditions and refine the quality of the education. While that is true, the risk of settling into comfortable and known routines, seeking to meet external expectations, and is always present. These words remind us of the risk of stagnating and letting that fiery spirit extinguish, and dare us to embrace the wildness past the edge of what where we are most comfortable!
Sincerely, Pete Sims
7
So dear reader, I invite you to heed Morten’s words and join Team 19 and the rest of the Kaospilot community as we stand “At the Brink of of the Wilderness.”

Y
Dearest reader,
ou are now about to embark on a journey through the work of our graduate students from the class of 2015, Team 19. This is a presentation of their projects that have been envisioned and pursued during their final year, 2014 and 2015, however many of them stretching into the life after graduation. I hope you will find inspiration and comfort, not only in the fruit of their work, but certainly also that a new cohort of Kaospilots will bring their knowledge, competencies and attitudes into our societies. Kaospilots certainly need the world in all its diversity, with all its challenges and opportunities. In my mind, the world also needs Kaospilots: people comfortable with change, people who can navigate with grit and compassion, seeking new ways to learn, keen to explore and contribute. Whereas our worlds have always been changing, it seems that the speed of change and the lack of grand visions generates upheaval where many people can’t find their way and where some challenges seem too massive to find solutions to. Another side to this is that in our societies there is also an abundance of opportunities available for resourceful people, where others have few. So where we may find it hard to choose, to commit though and find solace in our choices, other desperately seek more possibilities. In such a world there is a need for people who can share stories and spread ideas, people who can collaborate and help people come together, people who can combine ideas and resources from different areas towards new solutions. This requires people who can step into the “wilderness”. Wilderness offers a notion of something untouched, a space where new stories may be written. To leave the beaten track is to grant oneself a chance to discover the new. Wilderness come from the word “wildness” and suggests something that is untamed, not controlled by humans. Wildness is not just out there; it is also something that is in here, in our blood. That wildness fuels our excitement; when it overflows it make us do the unexpected. To go where no man have gone before may seem a bit pretentious, but to go and see the world with new eyes and offer fresh approaches seems to me very needed. That goes not only for Team 19, but for all of us. Happy reading.

AT THE BRINK OF THE WILDERNESS
THE AIMS OF THE KAOSPILOT E DU C AT I O N by Pete Sims The Pilot Project, carried out throughout the entire third year, is truly the culmination and the entire three-year Kaospilot education. In essence the intention of the third year is the same as the entire education. The students come into the schools with their own dreams and aspirations. So do the staff and the teachers. What binds everyone together is that we are all radically in service of the following four aims:
AIM 1:
CREATE DEEP VALUE FOR OTHERS
A core aim of the third year, and the education overall, is to train and support the students in creating, developing and testing out concepts and project that are original, relevant and needed in the World. The particulars surrounding the project, such as the field and idea are mostly left up to the student to decide so that it is aligned with their passions and interest, but should strive to create deep value and be of quality. What does deep value mean, exactly? It is a tricky, and somewhat elusive notion, as it will mean different things for different projects and contexts. Many questions are always raised as the students dive in the complexity of trying to create something of value. Some questions that guide the students and staff in their projects and investigations include: Who is this project serving? How can this idea create multiple benefits and opportunities for those involved? How does it fit with the context and culture? How is it meaningful and to whom? What is the story? Is it beautiful? It is original? Is it functional? How is this strengthening relationships and community? Is it simple and clear? Is it delightful? Who would pay for it? What kind of money can it generate and for who? How is this contributing to the sustainability of natural systems that’s embedded in? What kinds of negative impacts and unforeseen consequences could result from this? Can you stand by this? Is it meaningful to you? Does it shine? 11
These questions seek to encourage the students to
dig deeper and explore even more, in order to create something truly special and valuable. They train to not only make sense of this complexity, but also to realize their concepts, within the real world, where the ideal meet reality. Every assignment at the school is a realworld training space in creating deep value and learning to deliver qualities results. This is what makes it possible to move from dreams and intentions to reality.
AIM 2:
CULTIVATE THEIR CRAFT AS KAOSPILOTS
At the heart of the third year and the education is the aim of becoming skilled. A key thought that drove the founders was the “Passion is not enough.” Without a focus on learning, development and cultivating their craft, all that passion, energy an those wonderful ideas may be squandered as the students are not able to realize their ideas, or at least not without using too much energy and suffering unnecessarily, in the process. The idea of the craft is appealing for a few reasons. It points to the need to look to the past and learn from mentors and masters. It also calls for practice, patience, being humble, and a dedication to learning that spans well beyond graduation. It’s a lifelong journey. To be clear, we don’t train carpenters, chefs or blacksmiths. The craft of the Kaospilot is called Enterprising Leadership. It combines the methods, tools and theories from our four disciplines Project Design and Management, Creative Business Design, Creative Process Design and Leadership. The disciplines are applied in various combinations based on the specific
FIN A L P R OJ EC TS 20 15
A SUCCESSFUL AND POSSIBLY TRANSFORMATIVE EXPERIENCE AT KAOSPILOT RESULTS FROM STRIVING TOWARDS ALL FOUR AIMS SIMULTANEOUSLY.
Along with all of the professional qualifications that these disciplines entail, we are also very focused on the idea of more general leadership competences. We have thrown ourselves in thousands of projects and endeavours, over the years (many successful, many less so), and we keep returning to some competences that have proven key to the success of a project: • • • •
Action Competene: the ability to act, implement and deliver. Subject Competence: the ability to effectively locate and apply the necessary knowledge and expertise in the project. Relationship Competence: the ability to relate to others, form collaborations and work with conflicts. Change Competence: The ability to effectively respond to change, surprise and the unknown.
A key aim of this year to give the students the opportunity to develop the confidence and sense of possibility that comes from developing and deepening these key skills and competences. By doing so, their dreams and ideas are more likely to be realised.
AIM 3:
CULTIVATE THEIR CHARACTER
A key element to developing enterprising leadership is the cultivation of character. It lies beyond competence,
skill or method. It’s the meaty stuff, where the students really grow. We used to call it the “the Inner Pilot”. It includes virtues such as courage, toughness, generosity, humor, honesty, lightness, openness and grit. And of course balance. It’s about striving to be not only a skilled leader, but a leader and person with integrity. It is best demonstrated in how well one responds to challenges, frustration, conflicts and uncertainty. Does one coil away form discomfort or step in with openness and a willingness to take the challenge head on? The third year and the education, overall, are ripe terrain for cultivating character.
AIM 4:
CONNECT WITH COMMUNITY
A key aim of this year is to offer the students with the opportunity to connect with inspiring, generous, creative and supportive people wiith the Kaospilot community, and beyond. The community is wide-ranging, spanning across many continents, consisting of project partners, clients, collaborators, mentors and advisors, teachers, allies, activists, entrepreneurs, artists, community members and institutions within the public, private, civil and cultural sectors. All of our learning and work, takes places within various communities and they are therefore our lifeline. Increasing the gency of the community members and the strength of the relationships in our broader community are two of the most vital aims of the education. A key learning objective for our students is learn to cultivate healthy relationships and build community.

context of the project. Please see our curriculum for a detailed description of the specific skills, methods and theories that the students are trained in.

I am working within the field of analog mediation in the arts and cultural industry. Throughout this year I have been collaborating with ARoS Aarhus Art Museum participating in the very beginning of a far-flung mediation project called ‘ARoS Museion’ in which I have designed a concept for a physical space at the museum. A space to be called ‘ARoS Salon’. ARoS Salon will be a frame for both immersion and debate represented through the daily operations being an art library and work space plus through a series of weekly and monthly events experimenting with new mediation formats such as live-journalism and interactive artist talks. ‘Inclusion’ and ‘participatory design’ are two highlighted words within the current reality of the arts and cultural industry. We are witnessing a move from a one-way communication from the cultural institutions to the users to a two-way communication between the institutions and the user segments. The user is today seen as a co-creator rather than a consumer and this perspective has now spread to the Danish museum industry as well.
22
My concept is therefore created on the foundation of usercentered innovation, which in reality means that the concept is designed in collaboration with the future users of the space: ARoS Art Museum’s guests of a diverse age range and backgrounds. The purpose of creating a concept together with the users ensures the concept to meet an actual need and I do believe that meeting this need will result in a higher sense of ownership across the user segments of ARoS Art Museum. As Erlend Høyersten (CEO
of ARoS) says: “Art can create the frames for new relations among the museum and the user and in-between the users. New meetings will arise in this process of understanding our past, our present and our future through art”.
DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS
How to boil down one year – well, actually three years - of intense learning, frustration, unlimited joy, love and other greasy stories? Throughout the first four semesters we spent quite an amount of time “out there” among real clients, ditto needs and projects. At a point you get close to used to applying theory and methods directly into a real context. However, one of my biggest learnings is still how surprising the real world is - that reality is ever changing and that two tasks seemingly identical on paper never look the same in real life. I have definitely learned that I still have much to learn. I will bring this humble perspective with me into my future works as this humbleness lights my curiosity and reminds me that there is no such thing as a recipe for the perfect project.
WHAT’S NEXT?
I want to get better at what I have started. Hopefully by moving on straight into a masters program, but nothing is set in stone yet. No matter what, I feel confident in the future by the foundation I have created for myself having attended Kaospilot. I have seen and felt that what we learn at this school is needed in the world – both now and in the future.

Moa: The context - or lets call it stage - of our 3rd year project is the performing arts, namely dance and theatre. We both grew up in the world of performing arts and each have more than ten years of experience especially within commercial Hiphop and contemporary dance. With Biography and this project we not only get to close a circle using what we know best from both of our educational backgrounds, it is furthermore an opportunity for us to give back to an art form we truly care for, and to artists we deeply sympathize with. Sasja: The project (and company) of Biography is about two core purposes - first and foremost it is for the people within the performing arts. Yet, it is also about the art itself. It is about addressing the role of performing arts in our societies today and ask; what stories do we tell and how? Moa and I ventured on a journey to explore how to best offer comprehensive support in the context of being a professional within the performing arts today, however we also dream of being able to influence the impact and potential this particular sector holds in our society now and in the future. We raise the question; how can the performing arts - it’s stories and people - contribute to our understanding of the complex world we are living in.
22
Due to globalization and other macro technological and socioeconomic trends, the performing arts sector, like many others, struggles to navigate in a turmoil of change. Further, industryspecific structures, trends and ideals are calling for new and innovative ways of working and thinking and this is where we come
in. With our background and knowledge from the sector, as well as the skills and competencies we have gained from our three years at Kaospilot, we believe that we have the opportunity to re-enter the sector with fresh eyes and new knowledge within leadership, learning facilitation and body/mind practices.
DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS
Moa: The first essential and natural step for us was to create a strong foundation for our team and for the structures we wished to work within. We were especially thorough when making our overall plan for the pilot year and when setting goals and success criteria for both ourselves and the project. We have shaped our team with a third non-kaospilot member and collaborated with Corpus at the Royal Danish Ballet, as well as with various performing artists and practitioners in both Denmark and London. Through immense research, prototypes, interviews and finally our workshops, Biography has - and is still - taking its shape. It has been a challenge for us to leave our own biases and assumptions behind and it has been a profound and exciting surprise to experience how far we have come, both personally and professionally, not just within this pilot project, but throughout all three years at the school. Moa: My greatest learnings this year is the value of taking ideas into action, practicing courage by daring to start conversations that matter and an embodied learn-by-doing approach which has given me experience, and thereby confidence in my work. Furthermore this year has given me a deeper understanding of how transformational experiences can be when designed and

Sasja: My greatest learning is the delicate balance and relationship between humbleness and courage. ‘From revolution to empowerment’ was a headliner in our exam, and it describes in short the process and change we have experienced this year. Besides tremendous learning and insight into both personal and professional leadership and development, what this education has truly given me, is courage. The courage to believe in my own capabilities, competences and skills and not least the courage to put them into action in the ‘real world’. Finally the courage to be idealistic and to act from one’s own beliefs and values.
WHAT’S NEXT?
Moa & Sasja: Biography and the movement around it continues after the ending of this three year journey. We have established great and important relations within the Performing arts world, we are starting up our own office space in Nørrebro in Copenhagen and we’re kicking off outside the school’s frames, which indeed will be the real test to see if the concept stands in the long run. That itself is both intriguing, terrifying and incredibly exciting. Our dream is that we will continue the inspiring conversations that Biography has sparked this year and that our work will foster outcomes that will shape and change both the course of the people’s lives and of the art itself.

J o h anne s B j ö r k man Leading Complexity
MY STORY
Organization, leadership and individuals in uncertain, changing and/or complex environments was the subject I wanted to explore stepping into my third year. As my stage for this exploration I worked with the consultancy Hornstrup and Partners (now Joint Action) and facilitated an organizational development process at Albertslund Municipality. So what have I learned? There is an immense danger in leadership- and organizational theory becoming self centered and detached. It happens to students studying it and it happens to consultants working with it. It goes back to Cartesian philosophy and Taylor; that you can talk about ‘organization’ without being in an actual organization, that ‘organization’ as an abstract can be separated from ‘reality’ and examined and designed like a blueprint for a machine. When I started my third year project I believed that I had come a long way since Taylor. Trust me, on the Outpost in Cape Town our organizational diagram was literally nothing but circles. I now realize that the real curse introduced by Weber was not the scientific organization as such but the idea of organization as an abstract. Because; we love playing with Lego and every new organizational theory is like a new box of Lego, complete with a manual and a pretty picture on the box promising us the future. But it doesn’t matter how many circles, how flat, how connected or holistic our construction is if we design it in the abstract. It becomes almost impossible to avoid that the pretty picture on the box, or the one we drew ourselves on a flip chart, becomes the standard that we as leaders or consultants set out to make reality conform to. Its own scale by which we measure our success. I now believe, to paraphrase Einstein, that you should never measure your achievements by the ‘theory’ that guided them.
22
I now know that being concerned with organizational development is to be concerned with organizational results. That thing a group of people set out to do that one person couldn’t do alone. How do we succeed with that? And how do we get better? How do we innovate? Then maybe the answer is not organizational
development. Maybe the answer is leadership. Maybe the answer is dialogue. Or peace. I realize that we benefit from conceptualizing how we organize ourselves. Buddhists talk about ultimate and relative truth, and we live in a world of relative truth that needs navigating. We just have to be aware. Aware of how easily we mistake our mental theater, our theories, for an external reality, separate from ourselves. The organization as an abstract. This mechanistic, dualistic paradigm shows in our language. We say we build an organization. Then we restructure it. And we always have an organizational model. By now, I don’t believe that there will ever be a new organizational or management model for the future. And that is because the whole idea of ‘building a model’ is a thing of the past. What is the alternative then? I’m not sure, but I think it is leadership. Better, deeper and more leadership. By everybody. How that is going to work I don’t know. Yet. But ending off at a bigger question than where I started is probably a good thing.

“ It is easy to tell others what to do and then when it comes to ourselves we have a tendency to act very differently.” When I was eighteen I started my first volunteer engagement. After that, I was hooked and it developed into being my biggest hobby. Then I got tired of it. So I decided to do something else: the Kaospilot education.
”The situation today is that the volunteers are there for the organizations, it is time to switch that. Tillbakakaka! It is time for the organizations to be there for the volunteers.” - Melina Bergström, volunteer coordinator
Funny though, is that the volunteer engagement has followed me through the education. In my first project at the school the client my group was working with was an organization called Intermundo. They support volunteer organizations and associations. During the second year I did my process exam with the Swedish initiative FATTA, I supported them in organizing their volunteers.
I chose the name Tillbakakaka to point out one of the most important findings of my research, that the organizations want to become better at giving back to the volunteers. Tillbakakaka is a Swedish saying meaning “payback cookie”. You give your friend a tillbakakaka when you have received something from her or him that meant something to you, and you want to give something back that will mean something to your friend.
Still, when the third year came and I decided to work to empower volunteers it surprised me. In some way I thought I was done with volunteer engagement. However, when I could implement so much of my learning from the school to all the knowledge that I had from being a volunteer the spark and love was there again. The energy, enthusiasm, fun and eagerness of creating drew me back and I wanted to use my new glasses to look at it.
22
My project Tillbakakaka ended up being a process supporting organizations to focus and scope their work to create structures for sustainable volunteer engagement. Tillbakakaka is to offer organizations a ground floor to consciously start thinking about how to create conditions of sustainability for their volunteers. Tillbakakaka also questions organizations’ and societies’ view of volunteer work. Last but not least we investigate what role the organization and the volunteer play in creating and sustaining sustainable volunteer engagement.
”Volunteer engagement is the air in democracy” -Gudrun Schyman, Swedish feminist and politician. In early October 2013 I was standing on a field in Switzerland close to the boarder to France with my Kaospilot team. With us we had our team leader Sascha Faxe. She told us that ”something that is very important is to walk your talk”. It is easy to tell others what to do and then when it comes to ourselves we have a tendency to act very differently. I guess she hit a nail there. I started thinking and since then it has grown on me. Example: When I notice somebody being ill I always recommend them to go home and rest, even if it is close to deadline or if they have an important meeting coming up. But when I get ill, these meetings I have and the deadlines I have to meet are just SO important. This realisation has also made me self reflect; is it that I think that
FIN A L P R OJ EC TS 20 15
the work I do is just more important than the work of the people I recommend to take care of themselves? Is it that the people’s time that I take up in meetings are just more important than the time of the people other people have meetings with? It is not!
I can’t stop... thinking about what I might be doing next year.
While being in a school it is a safe space to explore thoughts like this. This year I faced the challenge of also adapting it into how I approach my future. When I have recommended my cokaospilots to do something or approach a problem differently, I have considered if what I am asking from them is actually reasonable and if I would be able to do what I asked them to do. I have also listened in a new way to them based on the way I want them to listen to me when facing similar situations. This strategy has been my key strategy for finding and handling balance during this year.
I have the perfect... feet for walking in flip flops.
Now I am exploring the opportunities of becoming an intrapreneur within an organization that works with volunteers. I am curious to learn more about how things work on the inside of an organization working with volunteers. I am also running the company Tillbakakaka that offers workshops targeting volunteers and volunteer coordinators. Tillbakakaka also offers coaching, concept development and facilitating processes targeting volunteers or organizations working with volunteers.
I dream about... being part of creating a fair and equal world.
I thought I was... never to become 30 but it is getting very close now. Whales ...inspires me. I value... motivation, leadership and balance.

W
hat I have come to understand about myself in these three years of my life is that I am a calm and empathic person with a strong sense for understanding people and supporting them through personal change – small or large, private or corporate. Going into my third year I knew that I wanted to connect to my roots in my final project – working with health, esoteric philosophy and the power of the mind. The manifestation of this dream came in the form of my concept, Re-You. Re-You is both individual coaching and process work for organizations. It is built around the language of Appreciative Inquiry (AI) with a self-assessment framework of questions within five major categories of human thriving; Physical-, mental-, emotional- and social-health, as well as one’s sense of purpose. Depending on which category was brought up as a topic to be worked with I would supplement AI with knowledge and tools from my background as a Kaospilot – leadership, project planning and goal setting – from my training as a Mindfulness instructor and from extensive research on what makes people happy. One of the strongest tools I have come to rely on as a support to AI is my intuition and curiosity; sensing when to challenge an opinion, inquire into a belief or when to simply listen and acknowledge. I have done personal coaching for over a dozen individuals, hosted mindfulness training for several groups, taught concept development for 30 aspiring event managers, facilitated workshops on well-being for a local coffee roastery and another at a big biking event in Aarhus called Op På Cyklen.
My Process
33
The concept sprung from years of interest in overcoming personal adversity and limiting beliefs. Although I did not know what I was going to create when I set out on my journey these past years, I knew that I wanted to become the best I could at
helping people overcoming their personal challenges and going beyond the limitations of personal belief systems. I trained myself through praxis – coaching and doing process work – as well as doing research in the fields of Positive Psychology and Personal Development. It has been a journey of big ups and downs; facing my own worst demons during a depression over Christmas and meeting like-minded souls bent on helping others step into the courage to change their lives. Many tough lessons on how to start a business were necessary for me to learn that I had to take my own medicine; no one can take big steps like this without surrounding oneself with a good supportive network. And you have to understand the importance of exercise, personal reflections, healthy food, that friends are keys to your health, and that you cannot be good at everything in a business. I learned the hard way that I am not as great a salesman as I initially thought I could be, struggling with phone calls and networking. But when something does not work, you try something else. Success came in the form of allying myself with the right people to help me reach my target groups; a partnership with Move-Ment (a sports coaching company on Lanzarote), the Kaospilot network and my private network.
What’s next?
I know that I want to continue developing and honing my skills to help people discover new aspects of themselves and grow their self-compassion towards flaws and limiting beliefs. I also know that in order for me to learn in the best possible way I need to surround myself with more experienced people that I can learn from and work together with. Therefore I hope that when I finish my education I will be able to find like-minded souls in an organization that will take me in and where I can put my knowledge and skills to good use.

One year ago when travelling in Cape Town, South Africa, a special way of having plants fascinated me. In cafés, in shops and hostels there were plants hanging in strings attached to the ceiling. The fascinating detail was that the container of the plant was not a pot but a layer of moss that was wrapped around the soil and thereby created an organic container for the plant. This is what I later on figured out is called a “Kokedama”. I got to make some in South Africa and when arriving back to Denmark it continued. The idea of wrapping plants into moss origins from a Japanese bonsai tradition. A Dutch designer later got the idea of letting them hang and people around the world have been experimenting doing kokedamas as a Do It Yourself culture. There are many ways of producing kokedamas and I have found and developed a design that is beautiful, simple and quality minded. I see a need for integrating plants in indoor environments and I see a need of people being aware of the effect plants have on our wellbeing.
33
When choosing a pilot project there was a high demand and curiosity about my plant design and I decided my 3rd year project to be: To make a start-up selling kokedamas and introduce Denmark to this new way of having plants. My intention for the 3rd year project was to test out how it would be for me to be an entrepreneur, having a one-man company, creating things with my hands and investigate if this little project could be turned into a viable business. - It is a passionate, value driven project with a lot of possibilities.
I now have a design and a company called PLUKK. The demand for the design is overwhelming and I am taking in a partner to help me meet the demand and develop the company further than the Pilot Project period.
DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS
In reality it takes few minutes to register a company. But registering a company and building up a foundation for a viable business are two very different things. Since project start I have worked on and tested out various aspects of having a startup. I have tested and created my design and I have tested my sales channels and customer segment. I have been working on branding and identity and built up network and relationships. I have decorated apartments and workspaces, sold units at markets and in shops. The far biggest challenge in this project has been changing mindset from creating an extended hobby project to enter a business world. I quite early figured out that I wouldn’t be able to produce all the units myself and have been working on finding solutions for production. Now I am in negotiations with a nursery on Fyn to take over the main production. Creating PLUKK has given me the courage to create based on my own personal standards, passions and intuitions and has proven that it is possible. It has been an extremely confirming process.
WHAT’S NEXT?
PLUKK will continue after the final project ends. I’m at the moment taking in my first partner and PLUKK is developing fast. The journey has just begun!

def_anorak In British slang an anorak /’anǝrak/ is a person who has a very strong interest, perhaps obsessive, in niche subjects. This interest may be unacknowledged or not understood by the general public. We want to be known as Anoraks, geeking out on Design Thinking, and we want to make products with other Anoraks from a range of different fields. We are fascinated with the speed at which new technology in all spheres of society is emerging and evolving. This can be a very frightening thought but it also opens a completely new world of opportunities. We want to be part of this change as we are passionate about ingenious solutions and design, but also because we want to help shape a better world and this is most effectively done by playing the game, rather than commenting on it. During the pilot project our guiding star has been our continuous quest to explore how we can create value through good design. Through a very action oriented approach to both our projects and the concept behind this quest we have found what we believe to be a part of the answer. The establishment of a value based design firm called Anorak, creating products with partners and clients in need of new and better solutions. Anorak works as a platform that in collaboration with a network of subject specific experts, people we call Anoraks, create products within and between the physical and digital fields. The core of Anorak’s method is co-creation through a user-centric design process where the end product aims to deliver triple bottom line value.

The visionaries behind Anorak consists of three guys named Anders, Christian and Morten. We share an ambition and desire to create products that are worthwhile and create value for our clients and the end users. Initially we didn’t have an idea or a concept we wanted to execute, only a shared assumption that we are better and smarter together than we are individually. Inside Anorak we have heightened and sharpened one another. Together we have been able to dream more and enlarge our individual capacities. We have used our four client projects as prototypes on our own internal concept. A place where we could test our hypothesis and assumptions on what approach or direction would benefit us the most, making every project a new learning loop for us to continue developing on our own Design Process and Anorak as a concept. The projects range from creating an online learning platform on community led change for grassroots leaders around the world to the development of a web platform for big multinational corporations and business travelers, designed to equip them in doing business globally. We have worked on smaller local projects as well as big projects in New York and Chicago and have learned much about different business cultures. We have both been challenged and inspired in both camps.
WHAT’S NEXT?
Anorak is now an established design firm and we will continue to work within the field of product design. We hope to land some of the leads on assignments in Japan, new projects in the US but most of all more projects in Denmark, and more specifically in Aarhus. We hope to be able to create great products that create value here in our hometown, partner with locals and act locally. That is oddly enough new terrain for us but hopefully soon more familiar. We set out to discover how good design can create value and how we can support this process and that is something we will continue to explore.

J o h anne Holm Poetic Activism
Story
What is it? I have created a webcomic in 12 episodes. It is inspired from the brilliant economist and philosopher Lene Andersen. I wanted to test out: Will the comic format make Lene Andersen’s complex ideas accessible in another way? To a different audience than today? The style of the comic is naive and colorful. The storyline is odyssey-like. And hopefully the manuscript invites to both laughter and reflection. Why did I choose this project? I wanted to develop a craftsmanship of my own that could compliment the more general kaospilot competencies. I wanted to develop my professionalism with solid work routines and a methodology for how to work with big creative/conceptual assignments. It was important that my project was visible, hands on and could afterwards help explain what I do to future collaborators. What’s more, the project had to be in service of the transition to the ecologically and socially sustainable world that I wish to see. Storytelling as my change agency Storytelling is my change agency. This comic is the first of many stories. I call what I do poetic activism. From the words ‘political activism’ and ‘poetry’. It means, to use poetry to help create cultural and political changes. Poetic activism doesn’t punch people in the face with aggressive statements, guilt and fear. Poetic activism is soft power and white magic. It gently offers its universe to the listener. The bigger picture… Solar panels and hydrogen cars cannot do the job alone. To deal with the current and coming social, economic and ecological conflicts we need a new cultural paradigm. We need new stories and narratives and new dreams. New ideas of what a Hero looks like, what Success looks like, what the Good Life looks like. Poetic activism works to create these new ideas, stories and narratives.
Process
I collaborated with economist and philosopher Lene Andersen to interpret her work into a webcomic and release it the indie-way on social media and on our own home pages. She is a very busy lady but I am very grateful for the relation we have now - it is honest, action-oriented and full of new ideas for future projects. My third year project is very much a ‘coming of age’ story about me. I wanted to define my craft, my work routine and build portfolio. It was a very personal project and I was working alone the majority of the time. I use to love the energy and flow of good team work. Creating something together just feels more meaningful. I missed that feeling of being on a mission - together! What I got on the other hand, was a bigger confidence in my own ability to take decisions and act from my own judgement. I think this experience has made me a better team player and I look forward to seeing this in my future collaborations. The process of making the comic was in short: 1. Understand Lene Andersen’s material 2. Make it my own 3. Convert my understanding into a storyline 4. Draw, draw, draw! 5. Release on social media It was a lot of youtube tutorials (how to …. in photoshop cs6) A lot of brainstorming, sketching and doodling A lot of wrinkles in my forehead from heavy speculation A lot of R&B and Hip Hop during late night work rushes A lot of skyping with Lene Andersen And a lot of Adventure Time, just because it is awesome!

L eon i e M eye r A journey towards sustainable fashion
T
he fashion industry has been part of my professional life for more than ten years. Dissatisfied with its current state I turned my back on the industry when starting at Kaospilot. The fashion industry is running on a need for consumption with fast fashion dominating the market, feeding customers new trends on a weekly basis. The competition on low price encourages us to exchange our wardrobe at a rapid speed, resulting in more than 65% of all produced fibre ending up in landfill. When confronted with choosing my final project I had a strong desire to return to the fashion industry and use my newly acquired skills and strengthened values to explore how I can become part of creating a more sustainable fashion industry.
To do so I joined forces with Kasper and Morten, an experienced business leader and a creative entrepreneur. Together we created AMOV Apparel, a sustainable fashion brand on a quest for balance. We are a social business, raising one dollar for every dollar earned that will go to social projects within our value chain. We hope to inspire other companies to find a balance between getting and giving as well, starting a movement that uses the power of cooperation to do social good.
44
Our products are timeless classics that offer our customers a much-needed ethical choice in the market. Our garments are of high quality, their design is meant to last and be liked for a long time. So far we provide sweatshirts, jogging pants, t-shirts, tank tops, dresses and shorts - all in 100 % organic cotton. Each garment is equipped with a small ‘heart’ and a small
‘dollar’ print, symbolizing our dedication to do social good and encouraging the customers to do the same. We are passionate about changing the way we treat our garments and want to prolong their lifetime. Therefore all of our products have a ‘generation’ label that shows how many owners a garment has had. We sell it with the ‘1st generation label‘ but encourage our customers to add a ‘2nd generation’ label when they are done with it and resell it or hand it back to us. Storytelling online and collaborations with artists increase the value of the reused items - find out more on www.amovapparel. com Creating this concept from scratch has been a humbling learning experience as I have grasped the complexity of the fashion industry and how it is connected to other systems like agriculture and economics. There are a lot of initiatives with the aim of making this industry more sustainable, yet they are scattered and not effectively connected. After this project I am sitting with other possible answers to the question “What needs to be done in the fashion industry to ensure a sustainable future for all of us?” I have a lot of hypothesis of what the answer to this question might be and am looking forward to exploring them in the future. My next steps will include moving back to Berlin. After being in Aarhus and many other places I have a deep desire to come home. Bringing back a deep passion for sustainability and responsible business I can’t wait to connect to the community there and find out what my professional future will look like!

C h r i s t i an J u u l W en d ell Building Community Food Systems
SHARE THE STORY OF YOUR PROJECT
I have a love for foods, how it forms an integral part of our cultural identity and plays an important role in the economy. Growing up on a farm I’m happy for my connection to the land, seeing food as an essential part of life. We are aware that food has wide implications but we need to know more and do more about the impact that producing and consuming food has on the world’s resources. That’s why I started looking closer at food systems and the communities around it. I quickly found a central mismatch; every fifth organic farmer is insolvent and potentially threatened by bankrupcy, at the same time Denmark seeks to double the organic farming areas by 2020. My project looks at how community-based food systems support local farmers and eventually the goal is for the community to support itself through farming. I’ve created a roadside vegetable stand in the centre of the city and looked at the opportunity to reintroduce our agrarian traditions into our communities. The design question of this project is: ‘How can I create a pilot project that contributes as one solution towards a sustainable food system?’ Trough the project ByBoden local citizens have been able to buy vegetables directly from farmers in the unattended stand at Godsbanen, Aarhus C. It is run as an association of farmers that administer and operate this alternative sales channel while engaging in community-based development around local food stories.
DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS
44
My fieldwork is guided from passion, acting on value, seeking synergy and opportunities in my network. Using Experience Design and Prototyping is an expanding process of exploration. The process of completing different versions of ByBoden was inspired by IDEO; building to think, learning faster by failing early, and giving opportunity to explore new behavior. I learned to keep a flexible adaptation around the concept through
experience of reality. I learned openness towards inputs from all levels, be it a farmer or a professor. I am now better able to engage in complex processes and make sense of these. Building trusting relations was the focus in the collaboration around ByBoden. The design itself has showed me that to get trust you need to give trust. The stand is thus unattended and relies on the users being honest and trust that people do not exploit the concept. Feedback from users has showed how people even put extra money; they enjoy the transparency and the trustworthy design. Surprisingly ByBoden had a turnover of just over DKK 6000 in the five weeks it has been running and made a small profit. On Facebook it now has over 1000 likes. There has been an increased focus on local food systems in a series of press releases in Aarhus Onsdag, Lokalavisen, AltomAarhus and Aarhus Panorama. Two teams from Aarhus University have used ByBoden as a case for assignments on Consumer Behaviour and Sustainability. All in all I have valued collaboration over contract negotiation, I’ve learned to work with the social value that projects create by measuring responses and engaging in dialogues with stakeholders. As such I’ve come closer to understanding, not only economic parameters, but also social and environmental impacts that drive innovation.
WHAT’S NEXT?
Den Grønne Kile is a new city park that is being developed in collaboration between the municipality of Aarhus and Institut for (X) as a part of 2017 Cultural Capital. ByBoden is a micro project within this city park for green initiatives. I am currently the project coordinator and as such facilitate collaboration and keep track of the more than 30 stakeholders. What are you eager to do in our city, what do you dream about? This is the question that we ask citizens when collaborating to create this new recreational urban park.
FIN A L P R OJ EC TS 20 15
There is no detailed construction plan for the park on the contrary it is developed through experimentation and involvement of citizens and the surrounding neighbourhood. It is a new strategy in urban planning and social architecture we call ‘innovation through temporary use’. The park seeks to create even more life and identity that support the development towards a future creative urban centre in Aarhus K. The School of Architecture in Aarhus and Aarhus Produktionsskole are among future residents, moving in between 2020-22, and will be co-creators of the park. The strategy is also called ‘the tailored city’ because the park involves present, future and possible users, working with existing entrepreneurs. The content will be a mix of green projects like edible gardens, urban sport, art, architecture and creative micro businesses. In Aarhus we will become even better at interdisciplinary collaboration. In the future we will facilitate broad cooperation across demographic boundaries to open up the city for its dwellers to take ownership and joint responsibility with cohesion as its goal. One example is another 2017 project, Space Makers, here we map abandoned municipal buildings and work with Aarhus Municipality to rent spaces cheaply to entrepreneurs.
I can’t stop... looking for synergy. I am looking forward to... developing a new city park. I have the perfect... position between government and citizens. I thought I was... a farmer. People’s passion ...inspires me. I value... individuals, interaction and action I dream about... creating the best Aarhus for everyone.

I almost can’t sleep as ideas pop up incessantly.“ This was the feedback I received from one of the participants of “Pop up Creative class” I facilitated in Tokyo. My project is about creating a more creative learning environment in the Japanese education system. As the world gets more uncertain and complicated, our education needs to be more self-directed to help students find their passion to make a positive impact on society. The “Pop up creative class” is an experimental approach I came up with to build a foundation for self-directed education in Japan. Students learn about creative leadership, entrepreneurship, and design thinking from inspiring lecturers and engage in dialogue with other peers to imagine how they can implement their learning in everyday life. I am deeply inspired by Kaospilots Denmark and hope to create such learning environments in Japan as well.

T
he gender distribution in the Scandinavian music industry is 80 / 20, men versus women in all areas. My pilot year has been about exploring that gender bias and the structures that are maintaining it. For this I have joined forces with Femtastic, a collective for women in the urban scene, and we have told a different story. The story of active, creative women creating art.
44
In Femtastic we work for structural change in a maledominated music and culture industry. The collective is built on the belief that women need to organize and create space for themselves and each other in a world of patriarchal structures - quantity creates strength. The organization has two clear purposes: • To create stage and space for established female artists. • To inspire and empower young girls to express their art form. For these two purposes the organization has two legs: Femtastic Productions and The national organization Femtastic. Other than being a part of the daily work of the organization I have been project leader for Femtastic Queensize Festival, a three day festival in Stockholm on
the 6-8th of March. The objective of the project was to create an international, intersectional and including three-day program that highlighted and celebrated female artists. I am an incurable feminist, meaning that I advocate and support the rights and equality of women. Finding feminism was an awakening and a pair of glasses that has been simply impossible to take off. Just to make sure there are no misunderstandings - Feminism is a collection of movements that share a common goal: to define, establish and achieve equal political, economic, cultural, personal and social rights for women. What the future holds I do not know. The coming months I will slow down the pace of life since the past three years have been the most intense, beautiful and transforming years of my life so far. I need some space and some time to conserve all the experiences. I need to let my thoughts catch up. That said I do have lots of possible paths and options that I look forward to exploring and testing out. I just need to get some sleep first.

S u s anne W e x el s Hol s t- L a r s en P3’s Trainee Project SHARE THE STORY OF YOUR PROJECT
I have worked in the field of media, broadcasting, talent development, humour and entertainment. I have developed and executed my pilot project in NRK, Norway’s National Broadcasting Channel. More specifically, I have been placed in NRK’s P3 in the department of humour and entertainment. The working title for my project is P3’s Trainee Project. The project was initiated due to a need for developing a more structured recruitment process for new talents at P3. P3 are looking for new, young, inspiring talents to train in P3, and have the potential to become established and famous Radio and TV profiles for NRK in the future. The media industry is facing financial cuts. They are introduced to new laws and regulations that give NRK more restricted room to act and less room to think innovatively around human resources and talent development. One of NRK strategic goals is to increase the diversity among their talents so that they will be better at representing the entire Norwegian population. P3’s Trainee project was envisioned as an initiative that could help NRK to meet and respond to these challenges. The main goal for the project was to create an attractive trainee program for everyone in Norway who has a dream and desire to work as a Radio or TV host in Norway’s biggest broadcasting house. The purposes of the project were to develop a better system and process to discover and follow up unknown talents. The program aim is to provide undiscovered talents opportunities in NRK, without remaining limited to recruitment from the traditional education systems. My personal motivation has been that I wanted to help people to shine, develop their personality and make them perform at their best. I wanted to enable them to explore their unique talent and competences within the field of entertainment and humour. I wanted to show the talents
new possibilities and perspectives, within the media industry. I believe true talent is discovered when being pushed and challenged.
DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS
My role during this year has been by practicing intrapreneurship and my Kaospilot competences. I have worked with innovation within talent recruitment and talent development in NRK. I have worked towards creating change in their existing systems and making them feel empowered and ready to think new and differently around their traditional recruitment processes and according to what is happening in the industry. I have designed a new innovative concept framed as a trainee program, which is validated in NRK. I have introduced it to many levels in NRK and implemented it in P3. The challenge has been to push innovation within a large linear system. It has been challenging to work in uncertain circumstances and not being sure when the execution of your project will occur. I have learned to read and adapt to systems quickly, and looked for value creation in more aspects of the project than only the final result. I have learned the importance of believing in my own competences, be true to my values and what I believe in.
WHAT’S NEXT?
Now I am looking forward to continue my learning journey in real life as an educated Kaospilot. I want to explore my professional carrier, within leadership, talent development and the media industry. I want to continue being curious towards myself and what I can achieve and experience in life. I want to continue nurturing friendships and the people I care about. I want to have fun and be out in the nature. I want to move back to Oslo, and connect with my hometown. I want to inspire Norway to think innovatively, challenge our existing systems and strive towards a more warm and open culture.

J e s pe r Reval d Do r p h J en s en Conversations
The Project and the offering
In my Pilot Project I have worked in close collaboration with the Copenhagen-based social laboratory, Borgerlyst and its founders Nadja Pass and Andreas Lloyd. The essence of the project has been to learn, develop, and create human-to-human conversation formats/events with the aim of generating better conversations between the Danes. In my work with Borgerlyst we have worked with the development, testing and execution of the following conversation formats: 1. Conversation Salons – Tightly facilitated and hosted conversations for up to one hundred people around a pre-determined theme with a societal relevance. Participants are taken through a variety of conversation exercises in small groups as well as oneto-one conversations. 2. Conversation Dinners – Loosely or un-facilitated conversations over dinner for 4-8 people around a pre-determined theme. A conversation menu guides the conversations with open and curious questions divided into three courses. A variety of themes and menus are available for print online on our platforms, but dinner hosts can also create their own. 3. Conversation Day – Short un-facilitated conversations on the go. Again, the theme is predetermined and conversation menus are available online. These conversations can take place anywhere – for example during a walk in the park or in a café, wherever you can talk.
55
The different formats are intended for conversations between people who do not know each other. However, they can also work to strengthen, challenge, and deepen already existing relations. Participation in any of the events is completely free of charge in order to limit exclusivity – this is for everyone. The different formats, including all material such as ‘how-to’ guides, conversation menus, questions etc. are
completely open-sourced and made available publicly on the web under a Creative Commons Licence. The collective main offering is painfully simple. It is spaces and occasions in which good conversations can take place, unhindered and without the constraints of our regular social contexts. In other words, we offer an arena specifically designed to enhance the experience of conversing. Through the participants we offer an opportunity to come to a better understanding of our differences and the challenges we are facing together, individually and as a society. Our aim is to crosspollinate our understanding of each other and our society across social layers, status, occupations, culture and heritage. In our events participants will meet and talk to people they do not know in a safe atmosphere. As participants has made an active choice to be present at the events and agreed to the premise that they are about to engage in deep conversations with strangers, they do not have to worry about breaking any social rules or evaluate their own performance. Over the course of this project I have experienced that by changing the frames and the context, we were able change the nature of our conversations.
The Process
It was a conscious choice that this project should be rooted in a collaborative process. The collaboration and the fact that we have approached the conceptual development in a co-creational process have provided a great foundation for learning. Being three committed individuals directly involved in the creation of the concepts meant that they turned out a lot stronger than they would have, if I had done this work individually. I entered the project period with a lot of thoughts and no concrete conceptual idea to be an enterprising leader for. Therefore I made the choice to find a collaborator with an already existing concept that I identified myself with and was passionate about. Providing myself with that entry point and position I enabled myself to drive a

The Future
The conversations will continue regardless of whether I am a part of arranging them or not and Borgerlyst will continue to host more events. I have already heard several heart-warming stories of how people and organisations are beginning to host their own conversation dinners and salons, and engaging in conversations with people they do not know. My hope is that we have managed to create something that generate enough value, yet is simple enough in its design to grow organically, like spores through our society. In fact, the biggest achievement I can personally think of would be to look at the conversation formats a year from now and honestly say that we have made ourselves redundant. This project also marks the end of an incredible journey over three years at the Kaospilots. As surreal as that realization is, it is also a relief. In August I will continue my educational adventure at Blekinge Institute of Technology in Karlskrona, Sweden, where I have been accepted to study their Master’s Programme in Strategic Leadership towards Sustainability – A new chapter that I look very much forward to.

have worked in the field of art. Discovering how the future of curation can look like. It has been a research project, looking into the possibilities for curating art through new technology, without compromising with artistic expression. And without neglecting the increase of technology in our lives, and therefore also in our artistic lives. The platform for researching this field was a concept named Dandelion. Situational determined artistic experiences connected to the city you walk in, but curated through your cell phone. The concept is built upon different components. First of them; conversation. Can conversation be the format, for creating art? Conversation is normally connected to language but a second or third language could be dance, music or fine art. Therefore the art created to Dandelion was put in the format of a conversation with limited time to react and response, and very far from being perfect. In less than 12 hours, two artists with their identity secret to one another create a shared piece, a conversation, sprouting from an area in the city that they both have a connection to. This conversation is to be put in an app, and can only be experienced when walking in the area of the city that the conversation sprouted from.
55
Conversation has been a big part of my final year as it has not only been my main pillar in the concept, but also my main source of information, feedback and insights throughout the entire period. I have always learned the most by listening to people and their stories, and I wanted to test out how far I could stretch that ability, and if I could turn it into a tool for me to learn. Mixing tools from Art of Hosting, dialogue tools and pure interest I made a casual format for me to learn, and I am in the midst of creating a tool
from that for others to use. Another component of the project has been the curiosity into how a technology experience, such as a cell phone application, could be connected to something tactile? My fear of technology sprouts from a fear of isolating myself and being unable to connect with my surroundings and the people around me. I wanted to explore the possibilities of breaking down that assumption and connecting to a world that I have been dragging myself away from: Technology. In that research journey I stumbled upon some initiatives, none of them complete, but I am no longer afraid of what technology can do to art, now I am rather intrigued by the possibilities a healthy collaboration between art and technology can lead to. This Pilot Project has been a look into how I can continue to learn and become smarter, without being seated to a chair facing a book. It has been a rough ride into defining an area that is almost non-existing. It has been a sneak peak into new worlds for me and hopefully my future from now will reflect that. It has been a goal from the beginning of the semester to have a conversation with a stranger once a week. I will continue that mission as I experienced that listening to new stories gives me more insights to the world than any book or newspaper could ever give me. If you by any chance want to be that stranger my information is below. Let’s grab that cup of coffee and explore what this world can offer us! Oh, and one last thing: A teammate predicted that I will be working somewhere in Rumania a year from now. Let me know if you have an interesting project in Rumania looking for a kaospilot. What if genders were actually awesome and the problem oriented gender debate in the medias was only a symptom of the need of a debate on respect, human differences and on how we support the development of each individual?
How these collaborations look depend on the shared interests. The aim is to create new knowledge, new words and new pictures to throw into the debate through internal processes and perhaps public events and to communicate the findings as part of the magazine.
Being Matter is a magazine aiming to provide you with a new language for this discussion. We believe that heavy matters must be treated lightly and will therefore through images, words, comics, and questions offer new perspectives on what it means to be a human and why we need to keep discovering who we are, the objects we use and the situations we are in - the three sections of the magazine.
Being Matter is still a fairly young project. It was first put into words in February 2015 in a conversation between Bonnie who is a digital designer, and Nanna who is soon to become a graduated kaospilot. Since then more people have jumped on board as creative contributors. At this point the development of the first magazine prototype as well as the first collaboration has been partly funded. Currently we are looking at how to create a business model of a magazine in connection to an action driven agency.
In the current debate around gender issues there is often a rough distinguishing between two types of human beings: The evil power craving super manly man and the sort-of-aggressive, slightly scary, feministic female. We believe there are quite a few people in between these two categories - in fact, everyone we know differ from these two stereotypes - and we think it’s about time we pass on the microphone to these people. But in order to speak one must first have a language. This is the language we wish to create. Giving new language to the discussion on what it means to be an ever-transforming matter will create a healthy platform for discussing gender differences and human development. Luckily, the team behind Being Matter knows very little of classic communication and therefore we still believe in the beauty and the bright future of the analog magazine. We are not experts in communication yet passionate about paper, words and unfolding language. What we are experts in is design thinking. We design user experiences, facilitate dialogues and see new paths. The 4th section of the magazine therefore is dedicated to inspire through action. This is where we collaborate with organizations, who also see the need of a new language and who want to contribute to the future dialogue.
The project was initiated as a platform for using play and pragmatism as a method for collaborative development. This as well as working from a place of rehearsal rather than a place of performing still is the very core of the project. Internally we have found a shared language in the language of design thinking and pragmatism. Externally, we use the objects of basic grammar, as it was taught in primary school (X, O, Δ, ~ and ⊗) as our framework for the four sections of the magazine. Understanding how deeply rooted my relationship with words is and allowing myself to use this as a creative tool for designing and creating a platform for healthy discussions has so far been my biggest learning of the project.
55
At this point, the dream scenarios of Being Matter is to release the first issue in the early autumn, have the first 1000 numbered copies sold out in 15 minutes, have potential partners such as Reden, Sex og Samfund and other organizations lined up for future collaborations at our release event and finally to have the project funded for at least another half year. Should this for some reason not be the case when autumn comes it must mean that something better has shown up by the time.

A n d r ea B u c h A a s h olm Innovating Health Care in Complexity SHARE THE STORY OF YOUR PROJECT
The Danish welfare is under great pressure and it needs radical rethinking and innovation if we want to maintain and improve the social security system we currently have. It is a complex challenge but I believe that it is possible to redesign welfare services that solve our needs in new, better and cheaper ways. I wish to equip people in organizations to identify and work constructively with complex problems and to develop competences for innovation within the public sector. I find it particularly interesting and effective to unleash the potential of frontline professionals and promote employee driven innovation. I have worked within the field of welfare innovation and action learning as a project leader for a pilot project at Aarhus University Hospital. Specifically I have done action research around how to support junior doctors (yngre læger) in becoming in-house innovators that use their skills and experience from the frontline to create better and cheaper solutions for the hospital. That led me to design a solution model for competence development within innovation that is closely linked to the daily operations and the challenges in the local clinic. As an adopted Kaospilot philosophy my approach to innovation is that you learn from experience and that the motivation comes from improving something that is close to you. The major problems we face in the world today are complex. That goes for health care as it goes for climate change or the growing inequality. When a problem is complex to work with or solve it means that there are no closed entities or stable outsets for problem-solving or innovation. When we deal with complex cases we need to ignore and leave some aspects out to establish the problem we want to work with. A problem that will be in constant flux which requires new and rather emerging ways of thinking and behaving. There will be no right solutions but only varying levels of success. In contexts of uncertainty and high unpredictability we do not need rigid innovation processes to follow. We need competencies to respond to emerging needs and people with intrapreneurial spirit to lead the changes. During my final year I have investigated how that is nurtured and how I as a Kaospilot can support others in navigating in complexity and create meaningful actions.
DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS
66
The project with Aarhus University Hospital turned out to be the perfect training ground for what I intended to learn this year as well as it came with a lot of unexpected challenges. What I have
invested and given I have gotten tenfold in return for which I am very grateful. In health care you do not have to look for meaning. What I take with me is a nuanced understanding of the field and its challenges and some of the ways I can make myself relevant in that. I have been curious and met with a lot of people and I now stand with a large network that I wish to deepen and widen in the coming years. I have definitely realized the importance of play mates and alliances across projects, systems and institutions which I will keep nurturing. During the project I have taken a number of different roles upon me: Project leader, process consultant, researcher, networker and concept developer. I have found that it is a quality to be a generalist - one that can mediate, build connections and relations, create synthesis and mobilize stakeholders around a project. My experience with being an intrapreneur in a big organization is that you progress by finding the paths where the energy is. What I have also learned is that the pragmatic way is not always the prettiest or smoothest - but for me it is definitely the most fulfilling. I have pushed myself to learn fast in a completely new environment. I have realized that I have a skill for unleashing the potential among others. By probing a field I can design valuable solutions in complex settings. At this point I feel I have confidence in my professionalism and at the same time I am humbled by how much I would like to learn. To me that feels like a good take-off position.
WHAT’S NEXT?
In the best of all worlds I will keep pioneering within health care or other welfare services. There is so much exciting work to be done that I wish to be a part of. I am seeking collaborators or partners who work with innovating services and processes within welfare. If you could be one of them I would love to hear from you. I am highly motivated to get involved in new projects or settings where I can build on the knowledge, skill and passion I have gained from working in health care. I am still connected to Aarhus University Hospital and I will work to maintain a lasting relationship with them and the Kaospilot institution as there is so much that we can learn from each other. On a more general level I plan to keep educating myself either within the formal educational system or through an apprenticeship. My path out of the Kaospilot school is a path of motivation to go out and make the common in society the best and most beautiful we have.

During the project a partnership with the betting company Danske Spil arose. The partnership is going to develop further as a game changer for the canoe sport. The betting company is going to offer the possibility to gamble on races during the World Cup. This is not seen before in Denmark and is a major step in making the Canoe World Cup more than a race. Gambling adds more value (both capital and social value) to the sport. Gambling will most likely foster professionalism of the sport further. This has a potential to change the canoe sport from amateur sports into the entertainment business. The introduction of gambling will probably meet resistance from parts of the canoe environment by the arguments of keeping the sport on an amateur level. Most likely the gambling will provide more opportunities to the sport and broaden the interest of the sport.

My work has been within the field of gender equality and youth empowerment. I have worked in collaboration with Add Gender, which is a creative advisory company that focuses on equality and diversity as ways of improving organizations. I have during this project investigated, developed and produced a concrete solution to create a more including and equal spare time for youth; the concept Samspel. Samspel is developed, tested, and produced in collaboration with the test case of all youth clubs in Järfälla municipality, Stockholm, Sweden. A youth club is a centre for young people at the age of 13-17 years and the official aim of youth clubs is to “work proactively to promote a healthy environment that is available for everyone regardless of gender, ethnicity and disabilities. The concept of Samspel is divided into two main services. The first one being a customized method called Samspel Method, which aims to work with inclusion and gender equality in a fun and practical way. The method will lead to a tangible and concrete end product. I call this the Samspel Calender, which is a toolbox that provides youth pedagogues with concrete advices, tips and exercises that will support them in implementing equality in their organization.
DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS
66
In my research I have talked to the staff in youth clubs, teenagers and municipality officials, and I have noted the amazing motivation, engagement and willingness to work on creating an including environment for all teenagers among the staff. They have time to engage in conversation and to create a safe environment for the teenagers. Still, the youth pedagogues experience that they lack competences and tools to create a more equal and including environment, which creates uncertainty in their work, which affect the teenagers. Gender equality is a knowledge area and the maturity process with regards to gender equality has gone
rather far in Sweden. To me it was essential to understand the context and trends and to gain expertise in the field in order to be able to challenge and be innovative. It was therefore also vital for me to collaborate with a skilled team of experts that could support my learning and ensure high quality of the concept I was to develop. That is why I decided to collaborate with Add Gender. The research has been based on a norm critical perspective, which focuses on visualizing and changing limiting structures and norms, instead of trying to make individuals fit into those norms. According to this perspective, these unwritten rules should be seen in relation to privilege. Some groups in society have the privilege to be considered as “normal”. These norm groups have more power and resources and are released from being questioned or discriminated against (Grinder, 2006). The norm critical approach has in this project been used as a tool at the youth clubs to create conditions for structural change. This has been done by looking at the relationship between power and norms and to gain understanding of people’s different possibilities. It has also been the foundation for all the text, exercises and advices that are presented in the Samspel Calender. This approach has guided the project and it has been used as a tool to question the current way of working at the youth clubs. Furthermore, my methodology has been based on the perception that effective work with equality includes individuals that don’t define themselves as boy or girl (Ambjornsson, 2004). I have also used an intersectional perspective that examines how various power orders are interwoven and how various identities come about as a result of race ethnicity, sex, sexuality, class, age, etc. An example of this is the focus on heteronormativity and how to create better possibilities for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) (Grinder, 2006). This has been an important part in discussionexercises and dialogues where we have challenged the identity that is connected to sexuality.

WHAT’S NEXT?
I started this year with the motivation to create a method that would contribute to a more including society. I was also determined to use this year to expand my professional network within the fields of gender equality and youth empowerment. I wanted to end this year with an opportunity to either turn my pilot project into a payed job opportunity or have other interesting job opportunities within the field. After hard work and determination this is now reality. I’m ending this pilot project with the possibility to continue as a freelancer within Add Gender. I believe this could be a great possibility to continue to develop my skills in method development, gender equality and process design. I will focus on marketing Samspel and further investigate how we can sell the project to new clients. Järfalla municipality will hire me to do evaluation on the project this fall. I have also arranged meetings with other people in my network to investigate other job opportunities. These are all exiting opportunities that I will continue to explore after graduating at Kaospilot.

y final project period has been a wide variety of things. It has included a big vision, new meaningful relations, exploration, personal and professional development, different projects, practical experience within Red Cross and much more. Most important the final project period has been a learning platform and an important stepping-stone all with the intention of getting one step closer to creating a school for economically and socially disadvantaged kids in India.
Background
66
Today, education remains an inaccessible right for millions of children around the world. More than 72 million children of primary education age are not in school and 759 million adults are illiterate and do not have the awareness necessary to improve both their living conditions and those of their children. India has by far the world’s largest population of illiterate adults at 287 million, amounting to 37% of the global total. It is a country where only about 32% of the children of primary school age have reached grade 4 and actually learned the basics. Also, the richest young women in India have already achieved universal literacy but the poorest are projected to only do so in 2080. The consequences of lacking education are vast and have proven to have noticeable negative effects on health, tolerance, economy and other vital issues. While this is the case current trends are that India is also a nation that has recently gone from being a developing country to becoming an emerging economy. There are obviously huge challenges related to social, economical and educational issues in India. The need for quality education for all has likely never been bigger. However, as I have recently learned this big, inspiring and complex country also represents a vast amount of possibility and a hope for the future that I would like to be an active part of.
My personal motivation for entering this project and field:
There are two particular subjects in life that I am truly passionate about. One is football and the other is education. I have played football since the age of five and for a long time I had a dream of becoming a professional football player. At a fairly young age I managed to become a semi-professional football player for the club in my hometown, Brøndby. In my early twenties my dreams and priorities changed but my fascination and appreciation for football as a tool grew. As I travelled around the world I realized that football can be used as a tool for things that are much more great and valuable than a professional football career. It can be used to communicate, educate and establish relations all around the world. As I have found out this is not only true for football but for sports and creative outlets in general. My passion for education was sparked when I had the joy of working as a substitute teacher at my old primary school. This was around the same time my dreams about a football career began to fade away. As a substitute teacher I experienced how all the kids contained a tremendous amount of potential. However, I also witnessed how this potential needed to be carefully nurtured in order for the kid and student to flourish. The aim is to create a school where the primary focus of education is combined and supported with sport and creativity. This is based on the conviction that combining these positive disciplines creates a whole that is larger than the sum of its parts. Finally, it is my inherent belief that every person in this world is resourceful and capable of inspiring and contributing to his or her community. In order to do so basic education of the individual is of high importance. A lack of resources should not prevent the most disadvantaged children from going to school because of where they live. It is my determination to play an active role in re-writing the narratives of disadvantaged kids.

P e r n i lle A lbe r g P e d e r s en Digital Nomads in Tour, Meet a Nomad, Coworkation
I
am working within the field of location independent living. Digital nomads, people, who take advantage of their location independence and travel around in the world with income from online sources.
The projects Digital Nomads on Tour, Meet a Nomad App and Coworkation are my responses to the current paradigm shift of work in the future. I have investigated the movement of location independent living while cultivating myself to become a location independent entrepreneur. Following my vision of building up an impactful business and lifestyle from my core value, freedom, my research has brought me to both, North and South-America. The location independent movement is currently mostly integrated by freelancers and business owners. They create their own small business in order to exercise their freedom to travel wherever and whenever they want. My research has shown that the millennials are the first generation to question the current narrative of what the concept of a workplace is. They do not want to work like their parents used to do and they do not value economical safety at work as highly as freedom. As a result, location-based company workplaces will become obsolete quickly. Big corporations are forced into adapt to this paradigm shift and meet the demand of a more flexible and free workplace in the future. During my research and cultivation of becoming a location independent entrepreneur, I have discovered the need to meet other location independent “colleagues” offline. Based on that need I created Digital Nomads on Tour, Meet a Nomad App and Coworkation. The three products are co-created with my location independent colleagues and user segment, and the result is tested in Colombia.
77
Digital Nomads on Tour, DNOT, is a collaboration with the digital nomad conference; DNX Global conference in Berlin. The tour begins directly after the conference on August 1st. The individually designed promotion bus takes 25 digital nomads, or people who want to become
that, on a 40-day trip around six different countries in Europe. The bus will be decorated with the tour schedule, logos and names of sponsors, while functioning as a co-working space on wheels for the participants. The 25 handpicked participants, are chosen to cover 17 different disciplines: Event manager, accountant, filmmaker, editor, photographer, community manager, leader, lawyer, project manager, front end developer, backend developer, graphic designer, journalist, copywriter, business developer, app developer and marketing & PR. The participants, are going to work as a small organisation during the tour. They are going to create a Meet a Nomad App from scratch, that will benefit our digital nomad community in the future. On a showcase, their product created during the tour will be shared with the world. Besides working on their own projects, they also get team assignments from local NGO’s who need support in increasing their impact. The participants live together in provided housing and work side by side with local entrepreneurs, in permanent local co-working spaces. Meet a Nomad App is a project in the pipeline. It will be used as a showcase on the DNOT and be developed, created, defined, prototyped and promoted during the tour. It is a location sensitive app that can bring nomads together, instantly. Through the app you can search for nomadic romance, nomadic friendships or nomadic professionals, match, chat and meet in real life all over the world. Coworkation stands for ‘collaborative work vacation’ and brings people together in different locations around the world. We aim to have 15 participants per Coworkation for 7-14 days. The focus is to create a space for peer-topeer feedback on ideas, sharing of skills, individual work and workshops to share and expand knowledge. Yoga practice will nurture your body and soul and vacation will contribute fun, friendships and creating good memories. Besides that, it is crucial for us to contribute to the

local communities and share skills, culture and experiences with the locals. The value within the ecosystem is that the three brands feed into each other and have the same overarching aim: To create offline space for nomads and locals to meet, collaborate and create future business opportunities.
DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS
My initial plan when I starting my project in October 2014 was to create an education to become a location independent entrepreneur. The concept still holds my vision for the future, which is why I have used it as my guiding star and as an inspiration for the concept that I am working on today.
It is still a challenge for many people to validate traveling as a lifestyle and not a very long holiday. It has required courage to follow my own passion of creating a sustainable lifestyle with freedom as the core.
WHAT’S NEXT?
Digital Nomads on Tour will take place August 1st starting in Berlin. So, that is where my focus is right now. The first Coworkation took place in the beginning of April 2015 in Cartagena, Colombia. The next big event for the DNOT and network created on the tour, will be held in southern Spain in September. Beside that, we will have a Coworkation in California in October and one on a cruise ship from Spain to Brazil in November. There is still a lot of work to be done and the exciting journey of this project has only just begun.

S i g r i d C ec i l i e M o s e s -J acob s en Becoming Siggy Smaug - Hatching the Dragon Egg
I
create poetic sensorial experiences for human beings. I work solo under the artistic alias SIGGY SMAUG and in collaboration with the Australian theatre director and maker Sarah John in the company MERMER.
Through poetic games, experiments, rituals, installations and interactive performances woven out of rejuvenated myths and stories, tactile objects, space, time, light, darkness, sound, smells – a space unfolds over time enveloping the participants. Hopefully it allows them to wonder about the world in all its mysteriousness, to experience themselves and others in a new light, and somehow ”rewrite” them self back into the world. These living works of art are never the same, always altering, listening to the participants. My hope is that these poetic sensorial experiences, can cultivate another sensitivity and way of being, that brings us closer to our selves, each other and nature. I seek to elegantly offer another way - the poetic way, perhaps… But I also understand that I live in a world of economy. One in which one needs to “make a living” - essentially sell ones work to get fed. Business has always been puzzling to me. Just the very fact that the word derives from “being busy” has made me uninterested. I love slowness. To reach the depths that can only be reached by taken a journey carefully, and the time consuming attention to the smallest of details...
So on my third year I set out to do two things:
77
First of all to further develop my artistic work: Birds is a new MERMER project, which underwent a development phase in collaboration with the artistic research center Laboratoriet, based in Aarhus. Birds is a poetic performance game for up to 30 people that aims to create the conditions for playful, poetic and intimate meetings to occur between humans. The work is inspired by The Conference of the Birds by Persian
poet Farid ud-Din Attar, an epic poem that explores the notion of a connected whole by telling the story of a disparate group of birds who journey together into the unknown in search of greater meaning. Approximately 70 people participated in a series of experiments.
And secondly to explore: How can I make a living doing what I love? This latter part has been the more ephemeral strange one. The one i haven’t been able to explain properly to people when they curiously asked.. I wanted to create a company – but found out i had to start somewhere else. During my third year i have therefore done my own wonder-based investigation into the roots and nature of business. One can compare my beginning of this journey with a scene from the old epic poem Beowulf, written sometime between the 8th and 11th century in England by an anonymous poet. The story takes place in a small Kingdom in Scandinavia that is terrorised by the monster Grendel. The king commands Beowulf, one of his finest warriors, to kill Grendel that lives in the lake. There is this moment, where Beowuld sits at the lakeside and stares down into the dark turbid water. His warrior courage almost fails him. His chest full of fear.. Because he knows that he needs to go down there, down to the beast that awaits him at the bottom.. I sat by that lake, too. Staring into the muddy business water, thinking – this beast is going to kill me! I dived in – and to my surprise I found something quite unexpected at the bottom: A beast, yes, complicated of course, misunderstood, dressed in borrowed gowns, but beautiful and with its own logic. I put the sword aside – and placed a soft hand at its chest.

“I sat by that lake too. Staring into the muddy business water, thinking – this beast is going to kill me!”
We simply MUST build our own sense of meaning - crack open the paradigms we are immersed in– to be able to consciously build the world we want to bring into being. So where am i heading now? I am heading OUT! Into the wide-open fields! I am excited about what might await me. I am open for surprises! The future seems bright. And at last, If you read these words and get curious – don’t be afraid to get in touch and strike up a conversation! All the best, Sigrid.
I cant stop... thinking about how I almost decided not to start at Kaospilot back then. I am now looking forward to... celebrate the ride! I have the perfect... dress for the graduation party. I thought I was... not getting all dressed up. But my musical star of a sister ...inspired me. So I now value some well chosen glamour! And dream about kisses.

So, what did I find out? I found out, that there is absolutely nothing wrong with exchanging with the world. With offering and receiving. But one can exchange in super un-charming ways – and very charming ways. If doing business simply means relating to and participating in the world, attempting to create something valuable, then it offers us the important and beautiful question: What do we value? How do we want to be in relation to the world? How do we want to participate? With what quality of touch?

a stronger and more whole concept. It gave us the opportunity to learn from each other and develop our personal leadership.
Challenges Ahead
Johan: It’s been wonderful to create a place where our dreams and thoughts can materialize and see that our collaborators have been so happy to play along. I believe Signe is the best partner I could commit this “crime” with and she’s right when she says that we couldn’t have created a concept as strong as Artoteket without each others thoughts, skills and competencies.
Artoteket is a shared art collection that enables you to bring original art into your home. Through recurring salons it connects you with the artists and invites you to be a part of a creative community. We create room for the wonderful stories that hide within the art, artists and people and strive to awaken curiosity, wonder and understanding in all of us.
The age of terror is hopefully over but we are still struggling to put a face on the grand challenges of our time. We now have the possibility to deal with the massive climate and migration challenges which are not to be solved by the actions of a few powerful representatives. We need to see, learn and understand what is going on for ourselves in order to take action and be a part of the solution. Therefore, we have to exercise and build empathy and active cultural citizenship across societal divisions.
We Can Be Heroes
We believe that art can create curiosity, wonder and understanding and through that become a catalyst for lasting positive change. This is our reason for building a platform for the fine arts that can connect us as cultural and empathetic citizens. With Artoteket we strive to create a room and space for all citizens to experience how art and creativity can influence, change and expand our perception of the world, the people living in it and ourselves.
Signe & Johan
We started this collaboration from a strong shared belief that culture and the experiences it offers, is key to cultivating character and building empathy. We also agreed that this does not happen when culture becomes exclusive - allowing only a few people to speak and have an opinion about it.
77
Signe: I think that our collaboration has had a very significant impact on the development of our concept. We have quite different skills and approaches as individuals, however, our differences have created
We’re Live!
The unique opportunity to focus work and school towards creating something that we truly care about for 8 months has been a great journey. We have come far and are both proud and happy that we have created a solid fundament to continue our work with Artoteket in the future. Artoteket opened with a grand vernissage, performances, workshops and 150 people enjoying the arts and each other on the 18th of April 2015. The other day we had a meeting with one of the leading art galleries in Denmark about how to collaborate. We are lucky enough to have a great advisory board that is very keen on helping the concept grow – in short we are already to make it out there in the real world.
Next Stop Iceland
In near future we are traveling to Iceland to co-create and participate in the new arts festival in Breiðholt, Reykjavik. We are super excited to bring our salons to Iceland with four of Artoteket’s artists who work with a variety of mediums like video, photography, sculpture, drawing and painting. In autumn we are planning a pop-up tour across the Copenhagen art scene, institutions and designer markets and we are looking forward to getting to know the Copenhagen crowd even better. If you can’t wait till autumn you are more than welcome at Artotekets Salon #2 the 25th of June. Best wishes, Signe & Johan.

Robe r t Senftleben Creating the Research, Training and Innovation Center for Ecological Restoration in Jordan
THE STORY OF THE PROJECT
I am working with ecological restoration - that is restoring degraded landscapes. It also includes working with community engagement; support and facilitate communities coming together for a cause. And storytelling and narratives; the art of telling stories and creating narratives. I am working on a project with this in Jordan.
What is your concept? To create Rhizo Camps - Research, Training and Innovation Centers for ecological restoration. It is multi-stakeholder and cross sector engagement spinning around ecological restoration. Who is it for and what value are you hoping to create with it? It is for enhancing and increasing diversity of all life forms, believing that all life is sacred. What is your motivation for creating your concept? I have learned that one third of our land in the whole world is degraded and unable to host vegetation (food also), and the phase of this state of our soils is ever increasing while the population is ever increasing. I love nature and I love to be outside. I hate big city life. I hate the rhythm of working 9pm - 4pm. I do not enjoy going to supermarkets. And I do not wish to work for any cause that ruins our world. I believe the infrastructures of big cities and their relation to the nature needs improvement because the values that uphold capitalism and materialism as we know it today is destructive, not only for nature, plants, animals and many native cultures, but also for ourselves.
77
What is happening in your fields that you find interesting? What the ecologist John D. Liu does and the Research, Training and Innovation Centers for Ecological Restoration that are created.
THE PROCESS
How did you go about creating the project? Honestly. Ask question when you do not know. Be Transparent. Be crazy. Enjoy and have fun. Describe your collaborations? Joyful, honest, diplomatic, common struggle, magical, blasting my own imagination. What has been surprising and/or challenging? Many things. Take a look at my blog www.greendeserts.wordpress. com What did you learn about your project and yourself? That life is as flexible as your imagination and belief. Imagination only becomes true if you yourself believe it 100%, 99% is not enough and 101% is too much.I learned that the project resonates with this time of our history.
WHAT’S NEXT?
The same. I am moving to Jordan in August to continue where I left when I had to come to Denmark to finish my exam. I am going to close my apartment and spend beautiful time with my family, because I will return to Jordan. I will take part in leading the Rhizo Camp - the Research, Training and Innovation Centers for Ecological Restoration. And the Ecosystem Restoration Alliance. I have found my boon, the path I want to walk on AND I have met many people here and in Jordan who I want to hold hands with while doing this work.

Steps towards the future of Danish High Schools
SHARE THE STORY OF YOUR PROJECT
Steps towards the future of Danish high schools I have set out to create a better world through education. We can do better. That is my belief and motivation for working with the educational system. Specifically Danish high schools. Why do we educate? High schools are challenged today as they face several contradicting agendas: they must both ensure a mastery of individual subjects, cross-disciplinary competencies and prepare the students to take active part in society. To succeed we need to understand what we have to succeed with. The burning questions to address are: What is the purpose of high schools? What is the core of their work? Whom does it benefit? A framework to do better My concept is a framework that supports high schools in doing better than today. It helps students, teachers and leaders work together to develop their high school. The concept is a framework consisting of four basic steps that high schools can use collectively and systematically to support themselves to refocus their collective attention, rediscover the people around them, redefine why they are here, and redesign their high school for the future. The steps are unfolded in a handbook.
88
Local platform – Go’Proces The concept has been developed in collaboration with the process consultancy Go’Proces, where I have been practicing my process competencies throughout the project period. Go’Proces and I are now offering process consultation for high schools, and other educational institutions, based on the framework. Read more at www.goproces.dk.

Grito Rock Malmö / Gemensamma Påsen
This project has been about creating a collaborative platform (Gemensamma Påsen) for the production of a cultural event (Grito Rock Malmö). As a foundation of our work we have used an analysis of the situation of the freelancing cultural worker within the field of “freeculture”. Through cooperative models of organisation we gain independence and efficiency. Grito Rock Mundo is an integrated cultural festival, that takes place in hundreds of cities within a couple of months time, organized by the Brazilian network Fora do Eixo. It is a web of local events, which are tied together through social media. The majority of the events are concentrated in the southern hemisphere, including many cities in Brazil, all countries of South America and several in Africa. This is the first year it is held in Scandinavia. The purpose of the festival is to promote collaborative production, create communication channels between independent artists & producers and support the creation of local platforms. Exchange between these platforms results in increased circulation of artists and cultural workers, as well as information and knowledge. Fora do Eixo is a network of collectives working with cultural production, culture- & media activism and collaborative economy among other things.
88
Gemensamma Påsen (transl. ‘the Common Bag’) is the platform that was formed by the participants of the process of forming Grito Rock Malmö. It’s a network of cultural producers, designers and artists who have decided to engage in informal modes of exchange and co-operation. The idea is simple: We can do a lot more if we do it together. We do it faster and better if each and everyone focuses on what they are good at. Collectively, we cover a wide range of competencies needed for any type of cultural production. Two main challenges were defined that all participants could relate to: access to space for production & monetary investments.
By trading with services and time rather than with money, we enhance efficiency for all of us. Besides the professional benefits of clustering together, it provides an important social context for the members, the majority of which is relatively new to Malmö.
DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS
While researching on informal currencies and cooperatives within the cultural sector I came across articles about Fora do Eixo. I happened to meet one of their representatives in Stockholm by chance in mid November and got invited to visit them in Rio de Janeiro. After a two-week visit I was offered to arrange a local edition of Grito Rock. Two other members of Gemensamma Påsen visited Fora do Eixo at the same time and the three of us formed the core team. The content of Grito Rock Malmö was created around the needs and dreams of the participants of the process. The aim was to offer a public event for free, produced through resource based-/collaborative economy. We wanted to see how far we could get by using the resources that exists within and around us - mainly time and skills. 1000+ hours were collectively invested in the production and as a result we were able to host a free event in Rosengård, Malmö. There were 90+ participants in the event from 10+ cities, 200+ guests through the door, free food for everyone and several established and up and coming artists performing for free. The return of our investment is manifested in a more solid foundation of Gemensamma Påsen and a tremendous momentum for new initiatives. Personally, I am amazed by the synergetic effects of bringing creative people together, with the process playing a part in many new relations, groupings and formations. I have had the pleasure to witness some of my oldest friends engaging with some of my newest. This process has taught me a great deal about what motivates people to engage in non-monetary exchange

and visualising the gains that spring from it. I’ve found out that motivation is often found in either the individual needs or in the grand narratives of positive world change. By monitoring the use and exchange of time we were able to estimate the return of our investments. None of us are in doubt of the tremendous potential in collaborative economy and organised investments of human capital in a time of economic scarcity and high unemployment rates. WHAT’S NEXT? Gemensamma Påsen has continued to produce events and media since the Grito. Among these new initiatives, there’s a more extensive project in Brazil under construction, securing facilities for production and numerous new productions/events. Currently we are planning to enter a network, which would give us access to music studios, film studio, wood workshops, dance studio, event venue and much more. It could be the perfect home for Gemensamma Påsen.
I can’t stop... I won’t stop. I am looking forward to... Brazil round 2. I have the perfect... beats. I thought I was... in a dream. Fora do Eixo ...inspires me. I value... experiences. I dream about... creating a eco-farm.

oncrete Lab is a music producing company that has a systemic approach to creating and releasing music in Denmark. We have a five step approach to creating and releasing music in the collaboration with an artist, but are not limited by having to go through every step to create revenue in our business. Each step of our value chain can be offered to a collaborator depending on the need of the artist, and each step is creating revenue for our company. The first step of our value chain is to assess how to work with the music of an artist. Then we produce, mix and master the music and after this we can assess if we want to go further into releasing and managing the music. This we only do if it’s beneficial for us and for the artist we are working with. Our goal is to be able to sustain ourselves fully - financially and artistically - and we work towards creating an environment of more quality and diversity in the Danish music scene.
88
Our model cannot easily be applied to other businesses in the industry but is a promising model for a company our size. We have created a sustainable business model in a rapidly changing market where many are looking for new ways of creating business.
We believe that you can make your passion into a profession through hard work and a constant drive. In our case music is our passion and Concrete Lab is the vehicle we have chosen to help us reach the point where working with music will be our profession. Concrete Lab is a company that works with a systemic approach to music. By working with artists, their music, and the thoughts around their music we are able to make the music better. It is very important that all music, even pop music, meet high standards of quality and diversity. These are two key elements in our sound. We strive towards becoming one of Copenhagen’s 10 leading creative businesses. We are a young company, but we like the thought of building something from scratch and we believe that naivety is an expression for having drive.

T
his final year has been a learning and inquiry into entrepreneurship and responsible business design within the current state and need of our food system. I have investigated this by supporting a farm in the south of Sweden in their development of a more supportive business model, and I have together with a friend put the insides and ideas into a potential enterprise that we have developed and tested for Stockholm. My core insights and concept design is focusing on Sweden, however the needs show to be shared more or less everywhere.
Today the producers get a very small amount of the food price for the hard and important work they do. They have difficulties surviving and big corporations take over and dominate the market. On the other end, the eater is very distanced from the food, with little or no insight to the process behind and what they actually vote for with their food purchase. The concept created aims to contribute to a more fair and generative food system that benefits all stakeholders. The concept is inspired by the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) model. CSA is a direct-to-consumer business model in which consumers buy a ”share” of a local farm’s projected harvest. In this way the consumer and producer share risks and benefits with agriculture. The model has been around for a long time and is growing worldwide. It is still fairly new in Scandinavia and requires a new consumer mindset and producer-business model.
88
The concept created is a step towards CSA, a lighter version that makes it easy and possible for both producers and consumers to protect and access local pure food. In practical sense the concept is a middleman, an intermediary, without dimmed suppliers. The producer and customer are first and foremost the ones who should be brought in contact with each other, the concept is an enabler.
This concept serves the needs of: The producer; who gets a more personal and committed customer base and channel. The customer; who gets direct access and insight to local, fresh and clean food. The nature and climate change; that is less affected by shorter transportation, clean production and less packaging of the food.
LEARNINGS field
What makes a responsible and generative business is the focus on all stakeholders. Stakeholders are those who have an interest or stake in the production of the value. There are typically five stakeholders: customers, co-creators, earth, communities and investors. Business language often separates the product-creation flow into two parts, supply chain and market chain. Supply as the cost and market the revenue. This destroys the understanding of the co-relation and creation of all stakeholders. The concept created is an example of taking responsibility and generate value for all stakeholders. Looking at the current state of our food system, the challenges would not have been there if this was part of the business culture. This is not only relevant for the food system; this is relevant for all businesses.
WHAT’S NEXT?
The concept is not ready for launch at the moment. We are in the second loop of improving the concept and working further with the feedback and reality we faced for it to become a generating business. The potential concept launch is moved to fall 2016. Until then we will further investigate and refine some essential elements of the concept to make it possible. This will be part of my entrepreneurial hobby. Besides that I am looking forward to join an already established business or start up to contribute to increase meaning and value, for evolution and all stakeholders involved.

he Swedish school system is under heavy fire at the moment, and for good reasons. According to the 2015 OECD report no other country has ever seen a similar decline in the PISA rankings, and Sweden is now ranked in the bottom 25% of the 34 member countries. Simultaneously, depression and suicides amongst students and young adults are on the highest levels ever and the rate of increase is the most dramatic ever. This tragic situation is often and not incorrectly called ”the Swedish school crisis”.

In my project I have acted as the Executive manager of Better Schools on the mission to create a strategy for upscaling our solution to this challenge, and start putting the strategy to work. A challenge well worthy of a KP project, but also questionably a good fit for the project frames. Instead of a clear and ”testable” concept, I have been on a challenging route to establish the right connections between investors, science institutions and schools, in order to create the
right foundation for implementing our three year strategy. At the same time, I have led three people internally in the development of that strategy and in the daily operations of Better Schools. Our core service is to bring modern science in psychology and biology into the development of teachers. We aim to shift perspectives and introduce new methods of learning that teaches the students to be entrepreneurially skilled and internally motivated with a high level of well-being.. Working in this field has helped me integrate some of our program into my own leadership. This enabled me to lead more from a perspective of the follower’s experience, rather than my own perspective. As I leave this school, I will continue ahead as the Executive manager of Better Schools, now with a little more experience. My intention is to be a part of the change that I see as one of the most important changes we need to make in order to create a thriving future. The change towards wellbeing, individual sustainability and human flourishing.

SHARE THE STORY OF YOUR PROJECT
The field of food innovation is evolving quickly. Every day technology allows for new projects to aid us combating hunger, malnutrition, obesity. Governments pour immense resources into new ideas but how do we make sure it’s the right ideas? How do we achieve long term sustainable solutions that will benefit us and the generations to come? For my Pilot Project I have developed the ESE Analysis to benefit decision makers by highlighting a project’s full value chain. Through dialogue and facilitated context mapping it benchmarks on three bottom lines; Economic, Social and Environmental to allow for better judgement and aligned goals. The model itself received a very warm welcome and Region Midt hired me as an external consultant as a continuation of my pilot project. I hope to spark their imagination and stir up some Kaos in the public sector surrounding our food.

Hello everyone, Pete asked if I would like to share an essay for the book that celebrates all of you moving out into the wilderness (I love that image). When asked, the initial response was “Yes – what an honour!” and then that was followed by “But what to share?” There was an initial thought to share something already written (a past article or blog post that was connected with starting new journeys and explorations) but that did not seem right. And then the thought came to share what has my attention right now; the thought / idea / concept with which I am wrestling and trying to understand. The wild place I am presently occupying. The problem is that the idea is still unfinished and a little messy. But of all the people I know, you are a group willing to get a little dirty in the effort to explore and understand. So please accept this rough and unfinished idea (my ramblings and questions) as you begin your journey out into the wild places of your work:
Design for relationship first. Have every other aspect of your work serve the relational quality that is developing. When faced with a choice, always choose the relationship. What does this mean? It asks us to put “quality of relationship” as the criteria for every decision and action. It asks us to develop relationship before any other consideration and to never engage in actions that jeopardize the quality of relationship that is developing. It also means being very clear about what are the most generative qualities to develop. Which will entail us making a stand; declaring publicly what we believe are the most important aspects to develop in relationship. It also means we will have to become quite skilled at creating and nurturing those qualities within the relationships into which we invite people. It also means that we will need to address the challenge of feeling good and doing good. When putting relationship first people can get lost in the idea of making everyone feel good, feel comforted, feel “safe”. And yet the relationships we are going to create need to also meet fierce challenges where feeling good, comforted and safe are not an option. Where we will need to risk, be challenged, and sit in discomfort. Can we create relationships that are robust enough to hold all of that and grow by those conditions? What are the qualities needed for that type of relationship? It will also mean facing the pressure to focus on “what we will do together?” rather than “whom will we be together as we do this?” (this is part of the feel good / do good challenge). The idea that at a certain point we need to focus on the work we must accomplish rather than on the relationship. That we need to organize tasks, get people on track, define outcomes, and create accountability. And all of those things are important in meeting a challenge; yet if they are placed in the primary position it means we will let the relationship be determined by those actions and we give up responsibility for the qualities created. In those situations when we have to get things done (since placing relationship first does not exempt you from achieving the goal) will we be ready to hold fast and declare that who we become as we accomplish any task will have a direct impact on what is created. That we will meet the challenge at hand through the robust relationship we have developed; that the relationship is the source for answering this challenge in a unique way. Which makes me think of the Antoine St. Exubery quote: “If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up people to collect wood and don’t assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea.” These are my thoughts / questions / musings as I continue to work in the wild places. They are a direct extension of the work I have been exploring (and have shared with all of you) around ensemble, the process of creation and craft. And yet they lead me into new places. Areas unknown to me before and they fuel a desire to experiment and discover. I hope they are of use as you begin your own journeys outward. I look forward to meeting you in the wild places.

AT THE BRINK OF THE WILDERNESS
Ah Wilderness! By Bliss W. Browne
A
lithograph in the entryway of my home shows windows which open out onto the Judean desert but reflect the city of Jerusalem. The dance between city and wilderness, retreat and engagement, orients my life. Placing oneself inside the vastness and complexity of the natural order awakens wonder and attention and brings needed clarities and perspective. Wilderness is a complex of natural relationships and subtle interdependencies. Our brains have been hard wired by wilderness for millennia. There we learned to survive, to perceive multiple dimensions and to relate to one another and to other species in a variety of ways. The staggering diversity of wilderness relationships ignited and expanded our intelligence and made us capable of bringing divergent perceptions into imaginative new combinations.
The Kaospilot education attracts wilderness lovers who thrive on adaptive challenges. Joining them in their adventuring is a highlight of my every year. Team 19 and I first met the year after I moved from Chicago to a forest home in Florida. Shortly after my arrival there, I opened my front door to find a panther staring back at me from the boardwalk. Being welcomed by a notoriously elusive big cat inspired awe and wonder. What was a panther doing in “my” front yard? What was I doing in his? Would he find nearby rabbits more appealing for dinner or me? Could I live lightly enough that his wildness would not to be routed by my ‘civilized’ ways? In 2012, Team 19 heard my panther story before we ever discussed anything else. With that mystery in view, we explored their visions, hopes and curiosities. We talked about frameworks for inspiring change and how words create worlds. They were open and on fire.
111
A year later, we worked together again, just before they began process consulting assignments. They were eager to bring their now considerable knowledge to bear on the organizational challenges they were about to encounter. They (mostly) had contracts in place but were full of questions about what would really happen ‘out there’. We ventured again imaginatively into the unknown, using their current questions as the frame. We explored assumptions about what it meant to be a consultant, what value they expected to bring. We wrestled with their unsettlements. How does one stay alert and open, and learn to trust intuition as much as the authority of knowledge? How does one stay brave and curious, resourceful and engaging? How could they formulate strategic questions to generate useful new knowledge and connections? By Day 2, they were sharing their hopes, doubts and strategies, drawing courage and wisdom from the diversity of knowledge and perspective in the room.

Wilderness and KP education are both complex learning systems in which many elements are integrated, over long periods of time, to form a whole. New organisms find their place when appropriate niches and necessary resources converge so their added presence adds to the vitality rather than to chaos. At Kaospilot, students and teachers see mistakes and surprises as clues to new ways of thriving. Reflecting alone and together on context and how the world works, learning systematic cooperation through experimentation, students become creative, self-aware participants in a wondrous complexity. Complexity mostly defies planning, resilience developing mostly from adaptations in response to newness. Not surprisingly, openness to change and diversity contributes more to wilderness and wisdom, its human counterpart, than rigid structures and rules. Last October, Team 19 and I reconnected again as they were beginning to design their own projects. Questions abounded‌how to start, involve other people, and build collaborations? How to sustain oneself, stay open and connected, do appropriate research, bring experience and strengths to bear on the challenges at hand? Soon we were discussing pregnancy and birth in relationship to sports, arts, health, environment, food, youth development, entrepreneurship and design, noting that giving birth is thrilling, messy and painful. Skilled midwives greatly improve survival odds.
It is stunning to me that a KP education, planned and executed in a Danish urban hub, with computers and coffee machines omnipresent, can lead to the complex understandings and creativity that characterize wilderness resilience and wisdom. Congratulations and thanks to the Kaospilot leaders and to Team 19! May wilderness wisdom continue to guide you! As Gerard Manley Hopkins said so eloquently, “Nature is never spent; there lives the dearest freshness deep down things.

Three students spoke that day of developing together a process to support design thinking and product development. They needed a product on which to experiment. I approached them about a project on which I was working, a new app on community led change. One week later, after several thoughtful, lively scoping meetings at odd hours, Anders, Christian and Morten were winging their way to pantherland. No words can adequately describe their three weeks of staggeringly creative, productive research and design. They were respectful, constructive and enthusiastic, and worked seamlessly as a team. I was humbled, thrilled and awed by their process and results. My horizons were stretched by their genius, imagination and discipline. A trip to Chicago with them followed several months later. And we continue to work together.

Dear Team 19 Greetings from autumn South Africa! It is now just over a year when I had a glimpse of your willingness to participate in this complex and beautiful wilderness country of ours in the outpost in Cape Town. A wild place that welcomed you both in the joy and the grief, the hope and the despair. Thank you so much for the gift of coming and giving yourselves to the unknown and to the people of the places you dared to enter. Thank you also for the gift of engaging with total strangers on the streets of Cape Town by harvesting stories of hope and freedom on the wood for the table that was built. It was an honour to listen to the stories in the return, of people that shifted and were moved and touched because you cared to listen, pause and see them anew. You were the “strangers” that beckoned a renewed welcome for some of the citizens of this land. I wish you many blessings as you now cross the threshold beyond the Kaospilot School and the team who has been a community for you over the past three years. Enjoy the journey into the wilderness where many stories beckon to be enriched, seen and call you to move them beyond subordinate storylines into full sight and magnificence. This wilderness is curious to see the difference and uniqueness that you bring to our world as the primary authors of your life. The wilderness is also a story that is waiting for you to come and write with it, re-author it and dare to challenge all that has been told, this is “normal” for the wilderness, this is just the way things are in the wilderness and all those that would profess that they know that the wilderness has always been like this. And as you cross into the wilderness, you are not alone, you have a community of fellow Kaospilot journeyers that come alongside you as co-authors of the stories of identity and participation in the reauthoring of the wilderness. You go with a pen and the ability to make news stories and make meaning if the wilderness in a new way, to even dare to challenge how the story of the wilderness have always been told and accepted as the only way the wilderness can be. May the glow in your eyes in this adventure spark some curiosity for those you will find on the way and may they be inspired to join you as you live boldly into what your heart calls you to bring to our world in this time and this season. I am eagerly awaiting news form all the wildernesses you will encounter and know that there will be tidings that will fill me with hope and will inspire me to continue on the path of re-authoring our world, one narrative at a time! Much love and blessings to all you wonderful souls

Bringing Fire to Fire People
By Andrew Taggart
‘What we want is a bigger life. What we want is to be more human by becoming more god-like.’ Roberto Unger, Brazilian philosopher
Invocation
Is there fire roiling in your belly? Cull it! Have you met your Fire People? Call them! Have you found your Big Thing? Summon it!
Culling Your Fire
O let my heart-fire loose! Let my heart-fire breathe freely, let it burst out, let it burn into who-knows-what. Only do not let me shrink or quell it, stymie or squash it but let it come forth in complete power! I myself must become a power, a living force like the wind, the sun, the sea, a power that gets poured, concentrated, cultivated into clear thinking, right speech, right conduct. I must make my fire breathe in the evening and on past daybreak. 11 1

For whom is a life of intensity glorious, necessary, beastial? Who wants to be defeated by any challenger willing to show him that he is wrong? Whose soul races, thrills at the thought of overcoming the Great Fear? Who looks hard for allies, recruiting one by one by one? Whose brow connotes earnestness and proper pride? Who welcomes calamity from every corner of the globe? Who deigns to risk it all in exchange–no guarantee, my friends!–for earthly salvation? Whose sweet toughness, carried forward in speech and action, can be an example for us all?
Summoning The Big Thing
There are grander terms than challenges and projects, and my friends we must come to these. These are mountain terms, these are seafaring terms, they’re acrobatic terms, martial terms, venomous terms. What they point to is The Big Thing, this unnamable something that calls us to explode with graceful power. Until The Big Thing comes, we wait like a lion gnawing at its cage, like a warrior sharpening his weapons, like a sailor watching for the sea winds to miraculously pick
up, like a great athlete dressing for the arrival of his fiercest opponent. The Big Thing has the force to turn us upside down, rip us apart, outstrip us, outdo us. Perhaps it will show us how very wrong we’ve been--and with the delight of heathen! Perhaps it will call us big fools and loutish bums, and we will listen while biting our mad, bleeding lips. Maybe it will savage us before it saves us. One thing is for sure: The Big Thing requires nothing less than our risking it all. (An Arab Proverb: ‘A man who has never risked everything is a poor man.’) Another thing is equally for sure: The Big Thing is that which demands that we become tough enough to meet and endure it. Let The Big Thing stand in for the flight from ordinariness into the expansiveness of the extraordinary. Let it be what calls us to greatness, only to break us. Let it be what barks orders at us, screams and demeans us, that which raises us beyond our lazinesses, our complacencies, our we’re-doing-just-fine-as-is lives. Let it be what makes us feel fed up with the lethargy and general slackness of niceness and easiness. Be more!, it cries to us. Yes, more!, we cry back to it. In the past, The Big Thing was glory in warfare (Homer), was the call to the divine (Christianity), the call to the revolution (Marxism). Now our Big Thing--what will it be? I don’t know, and I doubt you do either, but let it come our way already! For our powers, after long practice and steadfast preparation, are here and ready to be recruited and expressed in wise, aching grace.
Finale
All hail The Big Thing! Come you my bigger life, come too my dangerous fire, come all my Fire People! 111
Calling Your Fire People
Who among you has fire in his belly? Who here is a hunter, sly in his approach? Who has thought not once of dragging his heels or of playing it safe? Who hears ‘shrink back, O soul,’ and laughs hard in his belly? Who wakes up in the middle of the night blazing to begin? Who pushes at steel, pushing with steeliness and stealth? Who keeps setting the bar higher for himself to outdo and overmatch himself?

Dear team 19., Congratulations. Your three years at the Kaospilots are coming to an end. Now you are ready for take off and the wide wild world world awaits you. Soon you will have to find your function in the big machinery that make up the world. This is quite a scary place - I tell you. But also a place filled with opportunities for fun, creation, learning and meaning. It is impossible to understand it completely, with all its rules, standards, culture and hierarchy. The system you are about to enter is complex and consists of more opinions, interests and trends than you can imagine. Every industry has its own set of rules, culture and groups that set the rules and the pace. And you are going to get in there and create positive change. Luckily you are trained in breaking the rules and managing in chaos ! This is an event you have been preparing for during your journey becoming a Kaospilot, but until you are in it, it is difficult to imagine. You no longer have the comforting crowd care of the school or the natural progress in the program to keep you going when things get tough. When the last person has left the dance floor and there is no more champagne left, your journey into the new world begins. And for this you need motivations of your own. I’ll share with you my personal motivations - They might inspire you.
1.Remember you are going to die
Thinking of my own death is a surprisingly good motivator. Life consists of hours and days, so you better get the most out of it. And the right things out of it. The time to start doing what you really want to do is now - not later.
2. Better do something than nothing
Finding yourself in the real world with lots of opportunities can leave one paralysed with fear-of-action. For what if the step you are considering taking is wrong? The truth is; the are no wrong steps, all steps can lead you to more and better opportunities. And if you regret a step, you can always quit what you are doing and re-navigate.
3.Serve needs
If you do work that serve important needs and you fail, it will still feel meaningful to have tried. If you don’t serve any need and you fail, you will without a doubt feel hopeless. As long as your intentions of serving needs are in check, you will never fail completely.
4. Collect good stories
Sometime, the best results come from taking risks. This can feel horribly terrifying and difficult when you are alone in the wild world. But if you shift focus from performing well to collecting great stories, then you win even if your risky attempt might fail. I am planning on having good stories to tell my grandkids.
This part of your journey is coming to and end - but a new big journey awaits. I wish you all the best of luck.
11 1
These are my personal motivations - I hope you figure out how you can keep going and find your space to flourish in the wide wild world.

Team 19 Enters the Wilderness with Wisdom, Vision and Power. Manuel Manga O’Byrne
O
ur modern world is facing an evolutionary crisis that is systemic in nature, and almost invisible to the average citizen who goes about doing their work and living their lives. From time to time, people watch the news, read the newspaper, and are exposed to the crisis with issues such as climate change, wars, poverty, and other global breakdowns. Then people go back to their normal lives, and forget about the crisis, hoping that the leaders of our institutions will take responsibility and transform the crisis and build a better world. It is becoming more evident that this hope may not be realistic. Our leaders also go about their work in a manner that tends to focus on the micro management of issues. They focus on symptoms, and not on the underlying structures. The have a short term focus, and often ignore the macro issues. The result of our leaders’ shortcomings is a World that continues to drift towards an evolutionary crisis and possible collapse. Yet, this same crisis presents humanity with a big opportunity for re-imagining our world, for re designing the human, and for redesigning our relationship with each other and the earth.
1 11
One big reason the world needs the Kaospilot education, is that we need citizens and evolutionary leaders that are educated to see the systemic nature of our world,
and are able to see the evolutionary crisis, instead of people going about business-as-usual or living a so-called normal life. We need citizens who make it their business, their work, even their life purpose, to become a force for impacting and changing our world from its current unsustainable path towards a different type of future. Most of our educational institutions are ignoring the evolutionary crisis and, in fact, are producing professionals that are skilled and extremely effective in optimizing our unsustainable economies. They are contributing to the acceleration towards the evolutionary crisis and an unsustainable world. Schools like Kaospilot, are an oasis of hope and innovation for educating leaders and designers that can shape the transformation of the World and contribute toward a just, sustainable and flourishing civilization. In meeting this global challenge, schools like Kaospilot need to step up, even more, and become even more rigorous in their curriculum and purpose. The school needs to declare that its purpose is to produce a new human being and a new civilization by design. One name we can give this new human being is an evolutionary citizen or an evolutionary leader. Also, one vision or name we can give this evolutionary civilization is a planetary era where people live in justice, sustainable
FIN A L P R OJ EC TS 20 15
societies, peace, solidarity, and flourishing. The school should clearly declare its values, such as simplicity, design, innovation, solidarity, ethics, sustainability, diversity, leadership, flourishing, joy. In order to strive towards contributing to such large-scale macro social evolution, the curriculum needs to offer an set of “evolutionary skills and competencies such as systems thinking, generative language, ontological designing, ecology and sustainability, sociological imagination, leadership, design futuring, project management, and designing collaborations that are global in scope. This set of competencies could be woven into three major threads. This first would be designing your own life, taking care of your body, mind and self, as well as the design and evolution of your mind and purpose. The second thread would be designing your projects for social impact and for making a living, learning how to navigate the World. The third thread would be contributing toward a social evolution for a planetary era. Becoming a global citizen. At the same time, the school should continue to be a place for Homo Ludens: the playful animal that we are, where love, play and learning are taken as seriously and creatively as any other discipline. One could call this new human being: Homo Sapiens Ludens Ethicus Evolutivos. Some advice for the students, and maybe faculty. There is no need to reinvent the wheel; the Kaospilots should stand on the shoulders of giants.

The students need to be familiar with some of our greatest visionaries, thinkers, and people that I call evolutionary leaders. Examples include Buckminster Fuller, Jonas Salk, Edgar Morin, Riane Eisler, Tony Fry, Wangari Mathai, The Dalai Lama, Manfred Max Neef, Humberto Maturana, among many others.
My final advice for the students is to take care of your body, well-being, mind, and see yourself as an athlete who is going to run a marathon, so you need to train, to pace yourself, and to be in loving and healthy relationships and community. Take time to be serious and time to play, and never stop learning as you enter the Wilderness.

These leaders presented great visions for a better world, but what has been missing is people who understand these visions, and are able to translate them into practical projects of social innovation.

That’s how I think of the students at KaosPilot, too. You allowed me into your beautiful, warm community, in the midst of your own next jump (not that you hadn’t taken several already by your third year) and listened with rapt attention to new ideas I wanted to explore with you, Always engaged and curious, never blindly, we discussed new territory in defining value, business, experience, and life and you There are many kinds of edges, many kinds of wilderness. All represent the unknown and, as such, the future. We can never predict the future, of course, but there’s a distinct difference between embarking on a future without a clear view of where we’re going and taking a well-worn path we can clearly see from the present. The wilderness is one kind of edge, into the trees or tundra. The leap off of a cliff is another. The boundary between known and unknown, clear and hazy, safe and thrilling, is always a challenging transition. We often don’t know where we’re going until long after we choose a direction—and act. And, we often don’t know where we’re headed or whether it’s in the direction we want until we’ve been on the path for quite a while. But, those who are willing to make the leap at all are a different sort for not everyone—nor even many—are willing to do so. Perhaps, all life is but a series of leaps, from one ledge to the next, but I don’t think most people approach it this way. There is safety and there is playing it safe, smart risks and timidity. You all are taking the next leap, into your lives and careers after KaosPilot—perhaps, the most bold and exciting yet. You’re not leaping wildly or blindly nor without consideration. You may not know where you’ll end-up but you know where you’ve been and you’ve been well-prepared for what you will encounter. You’ve also practiced through hard work so your knowledge is borne of and paired with experience—which
is always the best kind of learning. Few people see what you do, which gives you a valuable edge but you also need to remember to translate what you see for those who are blind to it or don’t know what it means. That’s the mark of a true explorer and pioneer. The world is turning more challenging than ever, from increased competition and participation from all corners, to the addition of more and more knowledge, information, and data generated each millisecond, to the physical challenges of natural resources (many reaching their limits) to the search for meaning that each person on this Earth is groping toward. But, each of these is also your opportunity because you have tools to see each, worth with them, illuminate them for others, and transform them into opportunities. You have models to describe the world, to overlay and interchange until you make sense of it. You also have learned to make your own models when those you’ve learned are ineffective. You will identify and describe many more opportunities in your lives than you’ll ever be able to act upon yourselves. That’s so much more than most who see few or even none. For you all, you can drop opportunities behind you along your trails like trail markers and gifts for others to find. My own journey has been similar and, believe me, I never had a plan for my path. I chose directions as they presented themselves in front of me, using my values and interests as an internal compass. So, you should never fear not knowing where you’re leaping into. As long as you never lose sight of yourselves, you’re always at home wherever you land. You make homes wherever you are. And, the leap itself, you will find, isn’t as scary as it seems when you look down off the edge of wherever you are and have been. There are parts of us that tell us not to jump and others to go ahead. You will know which to listen to when the time comes, as long as you never jump (or hesitate to) out of fear. Whether it’s a true leap or simply a step onto the next path, you’ll find that you aren’t ever falling (though there are times it might feel like you are). That is just the process of flying, up and down, around and through.

hen I started my own program 8 years ago, I came to meet some of the most fantastic people I have ever met. Little did I know at the time that when you invite people into the unknown, the first people who join you are the most fun and fearless folks you could meet. When you stand on the edge of the unknown and ask of those next to you “I’m not sure what’s down there but it looks interesting. Do you want to jump with me?” and then answer “Sure, why not?” you are in for a wondrous flight with like souls.

rass is green. But once in a while a slightly darker and lusher ring of grass appears out of the blue. Like the one in the picture. The phenomenon is called a fairy ring because in the old Nordic folklore people thought it was the remnants of fairies dancing in a ring all night. Actually, it is a completely natural occurring ring of soon-to-be-mushrooms. The mycelium of the mushrooms connect them like roots and can go meters into the soil. The fairy ring reappears, year after year, and is almost impossible to destroy.
And yes, excuse me for being all poetic – but this is beautiful metaphor to bring with you into the wilderness, Team 19! You constitute a strongly rooted immortal circle and at the same time each one of you have your own individual, curly mushroom shape within the circle. (Scientifically mushrooms are classified as a separate kingdom than plants – genetic studies have shown that they are actually more closely related to animals than to plants – How fascinating!) And now before it gets too weird... What I just wanted to say is: Keep dancing in the fairy ring and stay in touch with your inner mushroom regardless if it’s psychedelic, edible or toxic! I will end off with a quote from my favorite fairy Björk: “If travel is searching and home has been found I’m not stopping I’m going hunting. I’m the hunter I’ll bring back the goods but I don’t know when.”

I was in 5th grade the first time I saw that performance, on a VHS-tape. I wasn’t ready. Such a display of wildness was frankly an overload for a nerdy kid from the Danish suburbs. The “voodoo-child” more or less fried my brain, that day, to such an extent that I just couldn’t wrap my head around what it meant. Of course, it didn’t have much to do with my head anyway. This thing was felt in the body: a raw electric energy that carried me right through anything that was bland, boring and unbearable during my teenage-years. It became a silent underlying mantra. An inner wolf-cry for the unexpected and not permitted. Later, I had to go further and further to fan that flame. At conservatory my friend Philipp and I took on the piano — (according to us) the symbol of Western mind control in music. One night the janitor showed up unexpectedly, during one of our late night experiments. I was wobbling around, on my back, on the strings inside the box of a Steinway grand, with contact mics attached to my shirt. Philipp was operating a small city of effect machines ,outside, and swiftly managed to close the lid. I was hidden inside the instrument, and not exposed to the suspicious janitor. We got away with it. It was nothing compared to Jimi’s display of unruliness, but we felt like true rebels that night as we howled, through the streets of sleepy Utrecht.
When I arrived at KAOSPILOT as a student I felt that I was among peers. Here was a new pack of “moonhowlers”, each with their own version of hiding inside a grand-piano, and that electric energy was felt in the walls and among us. We took on whatever we damned well pleased, with the curiosity of a tinkerer. We didn’t know how, and often also not why we would do things, just that we needed to keep moving, trying and testing the limits that was always catching up with us, during our sleep. But over the years, conformity slowly got the better of me. I got schooled. I started to obey the tools and rules. I wanted to conform to an idea of professionalism that could be respected by a wider group of people. I wanted my skills to be understood by all. I wanted a carrier, the sure sign that I had been cultivated. The wild was tamed. Recently I started to think: What would have happened if Jimi had just played nice? If he had just showed his obvious virtuosity by pleasing the crowd with empty tricks? If no guitar had been burned that night in Monterey? If he hadn’t hit a wider audience kicking and screaming? Even Jimi Hendrix got a little formulaic after a while. The smashing of the guitar did indeed become an expected crowd-pleasing way to end a show. It wasn’t spontaneous or unpredictable anymore, just good showmanship. But he continued to push the envelope on so many other levels throughout his short life. Always on to something, never caged. Personally I returned to play. My wounded inner beast jumped with joy when my daughter declared recently: “There are two kinds of adults in the world: the ones who don’t know how to play, and the ones who do. Dad you really know how!”. A humble beginning on my return to the wild. So this is my final cry to myself and especially to you: Stay wild, because I love you! Morten Nottelmann

n 1967, a 24 year-old soft-spoken man, wearing a bright yellow shirt, vest and red bootcut pants is telling the crowd that he is going to sacrifice something that is dear to him. Moments later he is making his guitar sing like a whale, stutter like a machine gun, and roar like a diving jet. He then leads his trio into the brutally simple riff of “Wild Thing”, as he slurs through the lyrics while taking breaks to hump his amp. After a somersault landing on the floor and some more sexually charged guitar-magic, he finally arrives at the highpoint of the ritual: the sacrifice of his beloved axe. He gets a bottle of lighter-fluid, from behind the amp, and starts a fire right on stage. As his guitar goes up in flames, he bends down and rides it like a horse. He then grabs it by the neck and violently swings it around until it breaks, in a sea of ear-bleeding feedback. The camera cuts to the crowd, and shows the frightened faces of young women, and a hand waving a tambourine in excitement. Jimi Hendrix has arrived.
