PH takes the reins for the 31st ASEAN Summit by Trixia Sharmaine Trayfalgar and Jamelou Bert Solina
In connection with the 31st Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit, the Philippine administration prepared for the event which will transpire on November 10 to 14, 2017 at Metro Manila and Clark, Pampanga, simultaneously. Founded in 1967, ASEAN’s primary aim is to promote economic growth, social progress and cultural development in the Southeast Asian region through multilateral cooperation.
Last October, the ASEAN senior foreign officials gathered at the Philippine International Convention Center and discussed the upcoming ASEAN Summit 2017. During the said conference, they deliberated and finalized the documents which will be needed for the East Asian Summit (EAS) and ASEAN Plus Three (APT). The government of Pampanga also deployed 23,000 cops for security preparations for the

upcoming event. Furthermore, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) announced earlier that classes on November 16 and 17 are suspended, and further recommended to declare November 13 to 15 as non-working holidays to ease the traffic condition. When asked about who are the expected visitors,
Ambassador Marciano Paynor Jr., Director General for Operations, replied, “We will have a total of 21 heads of state, heads of government, plus the Secretary-General of the United Nations.” “Thus far, we have not had any indication of anyone not coming. So as long as they have not indicated that they are not coming, we assume that they are,” he closed.

Assistant Secretary Margaux “Mocha” Uson became the subject of questioning during the Philippine Communications Operations Office (PCOO) budget deliberation last September 20, 2017 at the senate, with Senator Nancy Binay accusing the Undersecretary of spreading fake news and PCOO Secretary Martin Andanar defending her on the said issue. According to Andanar, the senate agreed that Uson’s Facebook page is filled with her own opinions, and
does not necessarily reflect the views of the PCOO. “She really insists ganoon po ang sistema,” Andanar added. Furthermore, he also defended Uson, saying that the Asec is “one of the staunch allies of the President who would fight tooth and nail for him, even to the point of going with him to ‘sensitive places’ such as Marawi city.” An example of Uson’s fake news exploits is the information she provided about the two supposed bank accounts of Senator Antonio
Trillanes, which was proven false as President Duterte himself declared them as mere ‘baits’. Sen. Binay then released the zinger as she forthrightly tells Andanar that his dilemma is on how to mitigate the widespread of fake news rooting from the government itself. Consequently, with over 5 million subscribers on Facebook and 150,000 followers on Twitter, Uson would have many recipients receiving and sharing her posts on different issues including these fake news instigating the widespread.

There were instances where-in they could not be reached, because of signal interruptions, power outages and other external factors that block our communication with them,” Sarapida explained. She expressed that the presence of our local TV stations’ coverage of current news events were still present in Marawi but not via radio, which was comforting for them as they are not totally isolated from their area. “It was horrible and painful; you can’t go to Marawi to help your family. Watching the events from

Reaching them via phone, we could still hear the sound of gun shots and their voices were similar to whispers and low modulated voices because they were hiding from the Maute groups. At first they [my family members] didn’t want to leave their house and take homage to the evacuation center, but my Father convinced them too since it’s not quite safe, risky, and we could never know if they would try to bomb their home, or worse kill them.” “After almost six months, I am happy the war is under control. The culprits flee and the local leaders were killed.” The president declared Marawi liberated and free. “The war is over!”

Agustinian teenager commits suicide by Christian John Camorahan and Zhaina Zanica Zafra
Randon Brayan Aquino, from Colegio San Agustin – Bacolod (CSA-B), took over social media sites as posts about him apparently committing suicide in his house at Fermont Village, Brgy. 7, Victorias City, flooded the internet last October 8, 2017. He was said to be found in his room with a belt around his neck at around 8 to 9 o’clock in the morning. At around 3 o’clock in the morning on the same day of his death, Aquino posted
on Facebook for the last time telling his Facebook friends and acquaintances to take care always and that he loves them with all his heart. However, according to Crystal Purying, a Facebook user close to the victim, the autopsy results showed that Randon did attempt suicide, but his death was actually caused by a cardiac arrest. In addition, Jose Burgos, another Facebook user, replied to Purying that maybe it was because of the hot

temperature and the influence of alcohol that caused the incident. The death of the STEM-A student of CSA-B elicited various reactions from Facebook users, especially from those who were close to him, and garnered different insights about his main reason for attempting suicide. Some believe that it was because of family problems, while others think it was because of depression; however, the real reason remains unanswered.

Bacolod City Councilor and Gen X member Cindy T. Rojas said that the most ubiquitous forms of media during their days were radios, televisions, newspapers, and magazines. In fact, Forrester Research claims 62% of Gen X read newspapers, 48% listen to radios, and 45% regularly watch television. Generation X is the demographic group found between Baby Boomers and Millennials. Members of this generation are considered digital adaptives, due to the mass emergence of technology in the early 1990s. as it is today. “People during our time did not have easy access to computers,” she commented. “Before, we could only use computers in the school computer labs.” These forms of media are still being used today, although not as frequently as before due to the arrival of better alternatives. “They are still popular. But with the addition of social media, they are not considered mainstream anymore,” said Mrs. Rojas. “Not only as a member of Generation X but as a public servant, media and social media are very important to me.” However, despite the changes of media over time, Gen X members have proven their capability to adapt to changes and learn how to use the existing media today.
“One of the disadvantages of getting information from the internet is that sometimes the sources are not credible. People can just post whatever comes to mind, without checking if it is true. The censorship gets lost in the process. Whereas, when it comes to books, the readers are assured that the information they get are accurate and credible,” says Miss Greta. Miss Greta Memoria is a 59-year-old librarian who has been working in the Bacolod City Public Library for 24 years. As a member of the Baby Boomers
generation, she can recall a time where news and information were scarcer, but far more trusted—then, they only had newspapers, radios and television. However, the most credible form of media back then was still books—not only were most authors demanded to fact-check their work, but publishers also rereviewed the literature to ensure validity and accuracy. Miss Greta hopes people online readopt the credibility and authenticity present in media before, and that somehow, books would be able to find a way back into people’s hearts.

Being part of the adjusting and growing youth— eager for attention, communication and freedom—media today serves as an upright medium in connecting the world together. A member of Generation Z, Rench Isaac Soriano—Philippine Dance Cup National Division winner for three consecutive years (both 1st place in Ballet and Contemporary divisions)—also believes that media is not only an outlet for gathering information, but also a venue for selfexpression. “In my career, I use social media to tell and teach the youth the things I know, and just [search] tips and guides to motivate myself,” he explains, after being asked how he uses media. “Social media makes us aware not only of our surroundings, but also of our environment and people. Take the Turn
Millennials have much of today’s world in their hands. But sadly, this includes the lingering judgments of yesterday. It is evident that the past generations do not seem to regard the present one so highly; however, the negative stereotype and dismissive attitude coming from previous generations should be eliminated so that millennials’ full potential may manifest, generation-togeneration degradation may cease, and modern development may take place. Today’s generation is closely tied to the advent of technology— which has led to the speedier completion of vital human objectives. The past generations, though, tend to view this in another light, using their trying experiences from decades back to spell a difference between the
immense work they had to do and the millennials’ fruits of “laziness.” As a result, the things that are supposed to be regarded as achievements today are instead seen as mere shortcuts for what the past endured, thereby cutting their potential to be laudable works or breakthroughs. The generations are comparable to the rice terraces in a storm, with the bottommost layer representing the millennials. Each layer passes the rain down to the one beneath it; each generation passes the negativity on to the one next to it. This pattern of degradation has caused difficulties for every generation, including the current one. If the past generations could find it in them to reduce or even eradicate this discouragement, then a break in the vicious cycle of generation bashing may finally occur. Lastly, forgetting the

Weaponizing Social Media
derogatory impressions towards millennials opens the modern world to positive change. Again, new problems have arisen—and new solutions have to be used. Millennials are the ones most pressured to come up with these solutions, but they are also the ones most capable of doing so. If previous generations just lend their trust instead of their inhibitions, and their support instead of their doubts, then the millennials may be multiple steps closer towards the development needed in this day and age. The millennials are on the road to progress and betterment, and the simplest way for the past generations to contribute is by taking a turn towards the right mindset—accepting the fact that what was not even an option before may just be what today’s generation needs.
Social media: a powerful entity with the capacity to influence and control the minds of masses. Xander Ford: a victim of negligent use of said social media. In today’s society, innovations in technology paired with the carefree mindset of most millennials have led to revolutionary t e c h n o l o g i c a l advances, yet improper management of such advancements—the epitome of this being social media. The inappropriate usage of social media have caused severe drawbacks, and Xander Ford is a living testament of this. Instead, social media should be utilized responsibly in order to prevent cyber bullying, and to become a catalyst for change. Firstly, social media has become an unintentional instrument for online hate and a home for anonymous bashers. When Xander Ford still identified himself as Marlou Arizala, people employed the internet to express their various opinions about him— whether constructive or not. Even after Ford succumbed to society’s overwhelming pressure to conform, people still found ways to criticize him—and this all happened within the channel of social media. Instead of spreading negativity around Ford, people should have just
KAPAWA • THE OFFICIAL ENGLISH PUBLICATION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF ST. LA SALLE — SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
reflected on their own actions—whether they were using social media properly or not. But here is a hint: the answer is no. On the other hand, social media may also be utilized to inform, educate, and motivate people to act. If handled correctly, the internet and other social networking sites have the capability to produce a spark that could potentially blaze into a revolutionary fire. Do note: if handled correctly. If managed erroneously, that spark could very well morph into a dangerous flame— one that would beget change of a negative sort; like going under a knife for plastic surgery to please society. As a result, people need to make sure that they nurture that spark—but that can only be fulfilled through proper usage of social media. So although it is a formidable tool, the true power of social media can only be harnessed when utilized appropriately—it can inhibit cyber bullying, and become a stimulus for transformation. However, using social media comes with a responsibility, and it is indispensable that we uphold it.
Putting “Media” in Mediation We wake up to today’s headlines only a tap away on our smartphones. Access to information about a certain event from halfway around the world, is as instant as morning coffee. If we have something to say about it, we are free to broadcast our opinions to our unending list of online followers. It is no secret that the use of media has evolved from a privilege into a necessity. The development of media broadens the perspective of our generation. It aids in raising awareness of social issues across the globe, and offers a platform for the mass to express their opinions. From traditional newspapers to online websites, the media highlights an array of
ideas, both agreeable and disagreeable, both morally right and wrong. It shows us thoughts from the other side of the spectrum. Through this, our generation is able to think outside of
that they have now. Internet influencers are the new rave and they are a commanding force. Trends now spread like wildfire and the people are more than happy to share what they have to

With the help of media, we have been able to shed light on social issues. It is without a doubt that the media played a great
role in broadcasting these issues worldwide. Without it, mental illness would still be taboo, feminism would still be a laughing stock, and the LGBTQ+ community would still be fighting for the amount of respect
say about it. It is now that we have realized how much of a difference 140 characters can make. Despite these advancements, the media is also susceptible to misuse. Offending someone, or getting
offended, is easier than ever now that the audience is broader and each mindset differs from the other. The circulation of fake news is inevitable and although it is important that we do not fall victim to it, it is more important that we do not start it in the first place. We cannot deny the fact that the influence of media is a force to be reckoned with. Especially considering the many issues that the media has raised awareness for and changed the outlook on. Too much focus on this can backfire and cause the radicalization of some. We should never underestimate the power of the media on the people and its sway over their opinions.
The Last Woman Standing On October 20, 2017 Apo Whang Od, the oldest tattoo artist in the Philippines, also known as the “Huling Mangbabato”, was brought to ManilaFame, a trade event in Manila organized by the Department of Trade and Industry’s Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions, and it stirred up a handful of controversy. The event’s purpose of bringing her to Manila was to endorse her as a nominee for the National Living Treasures Award. By bringing the hundredyear-old tattoo artist to the city and making her tattoo roughly 300 people in two days, it steals the meaning of her art and seemingly exploits Apo Whang Od. Prior to making her appearance in

At first, the young Embahador saw the sport merely as a means of enjoyment but later on he developed a liking for it and

But, the rising star had doubts about his dedication for the sport. “There was a time wherein I would skip trainings because I opted to come with my uncle to cockfighting pits. His team bagged the bronze in the 2017 ASEAN School Games, bearing fruit to his rigorous training and sacrifices. “I am thankful for the talent that God has given
