First year The beginning of the architectural programme at the department is based on the experiences associated with the origins and nature of architecture. All architectural experience originates in the human body. We experience, sense and feel the world around us with our body, and architecture is therefore perceived as art surrounding the body. At the beginning of the programme, the instruction therefore discusses the ability of our senses to confirm and support a cultural content with a time frame that goes beyond the present. The programme gradually builds up competences in the understanding of space, scale, movement and materials in different contexts. These competences are based on artistic studies of architecture, combined to form a continuous process and divided by theme between the two semesters, corresponding to the theme for the study year in question. 2. 56

Second year The department adds greater complexity to the second-year studies, which still use the human body as the point of departure, as inspiration for the experiences associated with architectural activities. These activities are extended to include artistic investigations of architectural statements that are experienced as a whole, divided in accordance with the themes for the study year. The greater degree of complexity of the programme promotes the breadth of the studies and the insight into the development and mastery of the subjective abstraction as a catalyst for concretisations leading to an architectural whole that develops theories about the building’s combination of structure and materiality in contextual relations such as the relationship between space and object, space and building and between building and landscape. 3. 58

Third year The final bachelor project at the department concludes the knowledge of subject-related tools and the personal skills associated with analogue drawing, digital media and the construction of models. The personal understanding of the perceptions of architecture is strengthened and emphasised in the abstractions of the assignment towards the controlled, sensed space. And the studies strengthen the development of the personal field of action through a growing understanding of the methodological decoding of opposites that serve as an inspiration in the field between the abstraction and its concretisation. A field of action that is created gradually throughout the degree programme and is based on the department’s field of expertise as a department of building design working with the combination of context, tectonics and technology and directed towards an innovative architectural whole. House and culture - background Making the cultural aspect a way of developing architecture is one of the themes on the architectural scene of the 21st century, when not only aesthetical considerations but also ethical and environmental considerations, amongst others, are relevant in the process of generating the architectural project. The realisation of a common project with the participation of three universities: The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture in Copenhagen, Denmark, the University of Sassari in Italy and the University of Santiago de Chile that try, by first-hand experience, to study the importance of these ‘cultural’ considerations by comparing results. In this way, they will get an idea of which cultural aspects are specific for each place and which are common in the architectural project. 112

House and culture - introduction In this programme, we will study the importance of the cultural aspects in the development of the architectural project. These aspects are many: some are of global dimensions and others are more local. Even individual aspects are important. At this point in time when globalisation is an everyday issue, it is quite interesting to study whether architecture is discussing global matters or whether the opposite applies and regional matters are more important. In this case study, we will concentrate on the aspects that characterise Copenhagen. We propose to do so by studying not only factual and physical aspects in general such as climate and topography, but also economical and sociological aspects, that are characteristic of Scandinavian and European society. House and culture - education and research The first phase represents the educational environment with students’ projects as the result; those results and the conclusion as part of the research environment will be included in the publication. The differences between the three locations are: Copenhagen: a North European city, at the peak of an economically and socially successful period – a period of great expansion. Alghero: a small village by the Mediterranean Sea with little and late economic development and where the last modern work of architecture was built in the middle of the 20th century. And finally Santiago de Chile, a South American city with considerable social and economic inequality and interesting new architecture. 114

House and culture - reflections Proponents of new trends seem to forget that each person has individual needs, that not everybody thinks as the average person and in this case, what is the average person? Let us forget generalities for one moment and look at individuality: a person, a family (or similar), a working situation, a specific interest, etc. Let us work in scale but not as we used to with a city, building or detail. Instead, let us work with people, collectivity (in a family or similar) and society.

Communicative infrastructure in Genoa To visit a museum is a conscious choice; time specifically set aside from your daily life. The communicative infrastructure of the project examines the communication/exhibition as something that comes about suddenly without being planned in the pulsating maze of the city. The project describes a route through the harbour town of Genoa in northern Italy. The route spans a difference in altitude of 80 m between the large sports stadium in the city and a small mountain railway station. By creating a new contact point in the city, the project not only plays a role as a piece of infrastructure but also becomes a platform for the existing cultural life in Genoa for the benefit of the population at large; a place where people can come into direct contact in an informal manner.
