11 /11 Architecture, Design and Industrial Form Anders Brix/Head of Department

Department 11 works with architecture's smallest scale area: design. We focus on the design-related object as a part of an architectural whole. The classical design disciplines of furniture and room art and graphic and industrial design are integrated with the architectural aspects in the teaching. Teaching is based on the spatial aspect, on the work with the architectural whole on a small scale. Based on studies of the individual space, design proposals are developed into principles, concepts and components. The space may be concrete or a general architectural type or issue.

The teaching makes intensive use of the School's workshop facilities in connection with the production of mock-ups, prototypes and full or large-scale testing. This is supplemented by special courses and workshops focusing on materials, production processes and form possibilities.

The Department collaborates with several other institutions of higher education on study programmes that aim to train the students in interdisciplinary collaboration and development of proposals based on analysis and knowledge. In the Master's programme, we also collaborate with changing external partners, e.g. from the industrial sector or various organisations, as well as with researchers associated with the Danish Centre for Design Research. With these contacts and collaboration interfaces, the Department aims to create realistic and challenging conditions for study projects.

This project focused on the piece of furniture and its specific context: How does furniture meet its physical setting? Based on a study of the body’s different positions the students produced a piece of furniture that was usable in different positions and utility situations and thus provided a physical as well as a mental change from the usual workplace.

The furniture needed to be functional during evaluations and for relaxation, thus, it had to be used standing up, lying down, hovering, floating etc. The students decided which positions the piece of furniture was to support based on their observations and analyses.

Inventar og identitet

Furniture, Fittings and Identity

The concept of health was the common theme for all projects at Study Department 11 during the 2009-10 academic year. In this project, the objective was to strengthen the student's knowledge of architectural foundational concepts and about the human scale – furniture as a space-creating element. The students had to design a spatiality for a specific purpose, in this case, a café for the heart and body and a small counselling centre in a room at Kultorvet 17.

The final part of the project course included a graphic subproject, in which the heart café had to have a graphic identity that included name, signage, menu, pamphlets, campaigns etc.

A Place for Meditation and Silence – A Break in the City

A Place for Meditation and Silence – A Break in the City – was an assignment in which the first phase focused on the concept of acoustics – but also on how to design a setting for an event in an urban context. The assignment was a room in a pavilion in one of the city's parks or on one of the city's squares. The place was to be designed so that it would be easy to dismantle and transport elsewhere.

In the initial phase, the assignment was solved as a group project in collaboration with the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), where the students from DTU served as sparring partners in relation to the acoustic part.

The purpose of the assignment was to develop both the engineering and the architectural students' ability to collaborate and develop the acoustic and designrelated bonds that are linked to an acoustically demanding spatiality.

A Home for a Young Person with a Physical Disability

Health in a wide sense was the common theme at Study Department 11 during 2009-10. The theme was to be included, to as great an extent as possible, at every level of the project, in this case primarily in the choice of subject: A home for a young person with a physical disability, be that a wheelchair user, a blind person or someone else. The challenge was to give the home's rooms identity and form according to function and context. The project was to give the student an elementary knowledge of architectural foundational principles as well as knowledge of the human scale in relation to the home.

Every year, an introductory course in furniture design is held for 3rd year students aimed at exercising and enhancing the sense of form syntax and tectonic considerations relating to furniture scale and at developing design skills.

The material is the same for everybody, and this year, it was pipes that were bent, rolled and welded in the School's model workshop. The project ran across seven weeks.

En bro

A Bridge

With inspiration from the maritime surroundings at Sluseholmen and Teglværksholmen, the objective was to design a light foot and bicycle bridge between the two islets. The ambition was that the bridge should appear as an aesthetic, almost floating addition to the place whilst also playing a role as a landmark. With its six pylons, the bridge creates a graphic pattern that forms a contrast to the solid buildings. The pylons provoke associations of looking into tree trunks in a forest and they have an almost transparent effect, which does not block the view.

Three-dimensional Writing

Script design based on three dogmas: three-dimensional writing, a given material and a given technique. The project takes its starting point in a way-finding project, i.e. signage and marking created for a concrete place. In this project, Vestre Kirkegård (the Western Cemetery) was chosen as framework. Further to its primary way-finding purpose, the signage is to blend into the surroundings harmoniously as an identity-giving and characterful contribution. The script is designed with a view to the character of the place, the reading situation, space economics and material and production technique.
