Kompendiet ‘Om bebyggelse og landskab’ er udgivet. ‘Den globale have’ blev vist på Dansk Arkitektur Center. I Center for Byrumsforskning fik Birgitte Bundesen Svarre ph.d.-graden for ’Det urbane suburbane - forstadsbyrum i Vangede og Silicon Valley’. Udstillingen ’Uitwaaien’ blev vist som afslutning på Annelies de Smets arbejde.

Byplanlægning omfatter regioners og byers struktur og dynamik.

Center for Byplanlægning arbejder bl.a. med ’Transformation af forstaden’. Masteruddannelsen i strategisk byplanlægning er blevet videreudviklet, og der er indsamlet materiale om byomdannelse i Europa og i danske provinsbyhavne.

Department of Human Settlements har samarbejdet med arkitektskolen i Maputo om et kursus med deltagelse af danske studerende. Ph.d.-projektet ‘World Heritage and Architectural Practise in Poor Urban Settings’ er blevet indledt.

Bygningsplanlægning forsker i boligens bæredygtighed, idé og funktion. Seminaret Land-ArchitecturePeople er afholdt og samarbejdet i Center for Boligforskning er indledt med et symposium. I Interreg IVprojektet ’Sound Settlements’ er der blevet gennemført seminarer i Lund, Malmø og København.

Center for Idræt og Arkitektur har tilrettelagt udstillingen ’Genfødt til kultur og bevægelse’ og færdiggjort ph.d.-projektet ’Arkitekturens evne til at fremme fysisk aktivitet’.

Research at the Institute of Planning deals with the development of sustainability and architectural quality in the planning of landscapes, towns, urban spaces and settlements.

Landscape planning ranges from renovation of historic facilities to development of parks, infrastructure and urban spaces as well as new settlements.

The compendium ‘Om bebyggelse og landskab’ (Construction and Landscape) has been published. ‘The Global Garden‘ was shown at the Danish Architecture Centre. At the Center for Public Space Research, Birgitte Bundesen Svarre was awarded the PhD degree for her dissertation, ‘The Urban Suburban – Suburban Urban Spaces in Vangede and Silicon Valley’. The exhibition ‘Uitwaaien’ was shown to mark the conclusion of Annelies de Smet’s work.

Urban planning covers the structure and dynamics of regions, towns and cities.

The Center for Urban Planning works with ‘Transformation of the Suburb’, among other things. The Master’s programme in strategic urban planning has been further developed, and material has been collected on urban transformation in Europe and Danish market town harbours.

The Department of Human Settlements has collaborated with the school of architecture in Maputo about a course with the participation of Danish students. The PhD project ‘World Heritage and Architectural Practice in Poor Urban Settings’ has been launched.

Building Planning conducts research into the sustainability, idea and function of the dwelling. The seminar ‘Land – Architecture – People’ has been held, and collaboration at the Centre for Urban Research has been initiated by means of a symposium. In the Interreg IV project ‘Sound Settlements’, seminars have been held in Lund, Malmø and Copenhagen.

The Centre for Sports and Architecture has organised the exhibition ‘Reborn for Culture and Movement’ and completed the PhD project ‘Architecture’s Ability to Promote Physical Activity’.

Udstillingen Genfødt – til kultur og bevægelse havde fokus på genanvendelse af eksisterende arkitektur til nye funktioner indenfor kultur og idræt. Den pegede på, hvordan en lang række bygningstyper fra kirker, fabrikker og biblioteker til fængsler, rådhuse og kraftværker i disse år bliver omdannet til nye rammer for kulturlivet.

Udstillingen viste ca. 35 forskellige bygninger, byrum, landskaber og bydele, der alle har det til fælles, at de enten er blevet eller vil blive ‘genfødt’ med nye funktioner og brugere.

Dette blev illustreret i form af en række danske eksempler på genanvendelse af arkitektur i udført form, samt udvalgte afgangsprojekter fra landets arkitekturog designskoler, som på forskellig vis tager stilling til transformation til kulturelle eller idrætslige forhold i bred forstand. Projekterne blev suppleret af fire tematiske film. I disse specialproducerede film diskuterede eksperter og lægfolk, hvad de ville med rum, der ikke længere tjener deres oprindelige funktion. Ydermere blev årets vinder af Idrættens Arkitektpris og Årets Talentpris præsenteret i udstillingen, en pris, som sætter særlig fokus på en positiv udvikling af idrættens arkitektur. Det er planlagt at udstillingen i 2012 skal vises hos en række udvalgte institutioner og udstillingssteder i Danmark og Sverige.

The exhibition Reborn – for Culture and Movement focused on reuse of existing architecture for new functions within culture and sports. It indicated how a whole string of building types ranging from churches, factories and libraries to prisons, town halls and power plants are currently being converted to new settings for cultural life. The exhibition showed about 35 different buildings, urban spaces, landscapes and neighbourhoods that all have one thing in common – they either have been or will be ‘reborn’ with new functions and users.

This was illustrated in the form of a number of Danish examples of reuse of architecture in completed form, and selected graduation projects from Danish schools of architecture and design, which each in their own way consider transformation to cultural and sports conditions in a wide sense. The projects were supplemented by four thematic films. In these specially produced films, experts and laymen discuss what they want with the rooms that no longer serve their original purpose.

Furthermore, this year’s winner of the Architecture in Sports Award and the Annual Talent Award was presented at the exhibition, which focuses particularly on a positive development of architecture in sports. The plan is that the exhibition will be shown in 2012 at a number of selected institutions and exhibition places in Denmark and Sweden.

Ph.d.-afhandlingen ’Det urbane suburbane – forstadsbyrum i Vangede og Silicon Valley’, undersøger om man kan tale om byrum i forstæder, og hvordan de i givet fald kommer til udtryk. Det gøres gennem analyser af otte eksempler på potentielle forstadsbyrum fra henholdsvis Vangede og Silicon Valley. Eksemplerne spænder fra traditionelle pladser og gaderum over indendørs rum som biblioteket til garager, der i Silicon Valley udgør både symbolske og fysiske rum.

The PhD dissertation ‘Urban Suburbian Spaces in Vangede and Silicon Valley’ examines whether it is possible to talk about urban spaces in suburbs and if so, how these are manifested. This is done via analyses of eight examples of potential urban suburbian spaces from Vangede and Silicon Valley, respectively. The examples range from traditional squares and street spaces over indoor spaces, such as libraries, to garages, which constitute both symbolic and physical spaces in Silicon Valley.

Selv om det kan lyde nærmest paradoksalt, giver det mening at tale om forstadsbyrum.

Ved at tage fat i velkendte, traditionelle definitioner og anvende dem på både mere og mindre kendte eksempler udfordres de konventionelle begreber. Karakteristisk for forstadsbyrum er netop en sammensat karakter: mellem urbant og suburbant, offentlig og privat, inde og ude, monumental og hverdagspræget, globalt og lokalt.

Although it may sound almost paradoxical, it does make sense to talk about urban suburbian spaces. Conventional concepts are challenged by taking well-known, traditional definitions and applying them to both well-known and less well-known examples. It is characteristic of urban suburbian spaces that they have a composite character: between urban and suburban, public and private, indoors and outdoors, monumental and ordinary, global and local.

Forstadsbyrum kan ved første øjekast fremstå som banale, men ser man efter, viser de sig at rumme adskillige lag af betydning. For at undersøge disse usynlige betydningslag inddrages skønlitteratur, blandt andet Dan Turèlls ’Vangede Billeder’ fra 1975. Det bliver en central nøgle til at forstå Vangedes ellers ganske ordinære og dog sammensatte forstadsvirkelighed - både i fysisk og symbolsk forstand.

Afhandlingen giver en forståelse for det væld af kvaliteter, der findes i de ellers ofte udskældte forstæder. Forstæder der står over for omfattende renoveringer i de kommende år.

At first sight, urban suburbian spaces may appear trivial, but at closer inspection it turns out that they contain several layers of meaning. In order to examine these invisible layers of meaning, fiction is included, e.g. Dan Turèll’s ‘Vangede Billeder’ (Images of Vangede) from 1975. This becomes a central key to understanding Vangede’s otherwise quite plain and yet composite suburban reality – both in a physical and in a symbolic sense.

The dissertation provides insight into the abundance of qualities that are found in the suburbs, which are so often criticised. Suburbs that face extensive renovation in coming years.

Projektet og udstillingen ’Uitwaaien’ er udført ved Center for Byrumsforskning, Realdania Forskning/Kunstakademiets Arkitektskole. Projektet knytter dels an til centrets indsatsområde ’Teori og Metode’, dels til instituttets forskningsplan for landskabsplanlægning, hvortil byrumsforskningen hører.

The project and exhibition ‘Uitwaaien’ has been conducted and held by Center for Public Space Research, Realdania Research / Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture. The project partly relates to the Centre’s focus area ‘Theory and Method’, partly to the Institute’s research plan for landscape planning, which includes urban space research.

I projektet undersøges temaer og fænomener vedrørende lokalitet, mobilitet og perception af byens rum og liv i en række byrum i henholdsvis København og Bruxelles. Der anvendes en kortlægningsteknik (mapping), som søger at bygge bro mellem det distancerede blik og den fysiske, sansende væren i og oplevelse af byens rum og liv. Man kan tale om, at der i projektet er installeret og anvendt en menneskelig skala - ikke som en metrisk størrelse, men via sansemæssige oplevelser og fortolkninger i mapping-processen.

Projektet bidrager således til aktuelle diskussioner om teoridannelse og metodeudvikling og -refleksion i såvel byrumsforskningen ved Kunstakademiets Arkitektskole, som internationalt.

Det flamske begreb ’uitwaaien’ betegner en formålsbestemt bevægelse fra en tilstand til en anden. Den forandring som indtræder kan være fysisk eller mental, og kan være ordnende og perspektiverende. Der kan også være tale om et brud eller en udvikling. ’Uitwaaien’ involverer ofte en vindmæssig, atmosfærisk påvirkning, noget udefrakommende, som påvirker forandringsprocessen.

The project examines themes and phenomena concerning locality, mobility and perception of the city’s spaces and life in a number of urban spaces in Copenhagen and Brussels, respectively. A mapping technique is used that aims to bridge the gap between the dissociated view and the physical, sensory being in and experiencing the city’s spaces and life. You might say that a human scale has been installed and applied in the project – not as a metric dimension, but via sensory experiences and interpretations in the mapping process.

The project contributes to current discussions on theory formation and methodology development and reflection, both in the urban space research at the School of Architecture and internationally.

The Flemish concept ‘uitwaaien’ describes a purposeful movement from one condition to another. The change that occurs may be physical or mental, and it may suggest order and perspective. It may also be a case of rupture or development.

‘Uitwaaien’ often involves a wind-related, atmospheric impact, something external that affects the change process.

Projektet blev afsluttet med en udstilling og en tilhørende publikation.

The project was concluded with an exhibition and a related publication.

Harbour Transformations in Danish Provincial Towns

Center for Byplanlægning har siden 2010 gennemført et studie af havneomdannelser i danske provinsbyer. Som afgrænsning er valgt havnekøbstæderne med fravalg af de fem største byer, fordi problemstillingerne i de store byer er væsentlig anderledes end i de mellemstore byer.

Since 2010, the Centre for Urban Planning has been carrying out a study of harbour transformations in Danish provincial towns. As delimitation, the harbour market towns were chosen, disregarding the five largest cities as the issues in the cities vary significantly in relation to issues in the medium-sized towns.

Studiet interesserer sig for hvorledes relationen mellem byen og havnen har udviklet og ændret sig over tid, og hvorledes de sidste 20 års havneprojekter har påvirket denne relation strukturelt, funktionelt og arkitektonisk, hvilken betydning havnen har fået for byens dagligliv efter omdannelsen og hvilke arkitektoniske og strukturelle principper, der har været styrende for omdannelsen.

The study’s focus of interest is how the relationship between the town and the harbour has developed and changed over time, and how harbour projects in the last 20 years have influenced this relationship structurally, functionally and architecturally. The study also looks at which significance the harbour has had in the everyday life of the town after the transformation, and which architectural and structural principles have governed the transformation.

Forventningen er at materialet bliver udgivet i det kommende år og det vil bestå af to dele: en netbaseret udgivelse, som omfatter data samt en lille artikel om hver af de 30 undersøgte havnebyer og en lille trykt publikation som indeholder de tværgående analyser, kategoriseringer, vurderinger og anbefalinger som undersøgelsen har frembragt.

The expectation is that the material will be published in the coming year and that it will consist of two parts: a web-based publication that will include data and a short article about each of the 30 harbour towns that have been studied, and a printed publication containing the interdisciplinary analyses, categorisations, assessments and recommendations that have resulted from the study.

Architecture’s Ability to Promote Physical Activity

I de seneste år har arkitekturen været optaget af at udvikle nye funktionaliteter, hvor den bevidst søger at påvirke til bestemte former for adfærd, herunder øget fysisk aktivitet i hverdagen. Arkitekturen er blevet en intervention i forhold til at fremme befolkningens valg af sund livsstil. Byens rum skal understøtte hverdagsaktiviteter som indkøb og transport og samtidig skabe sunde aktiviteter, sunde transportformer, sund fritid og sunde rammer om arbejde og skole. Rummene skal forme eksisterende hverdagsaktiviteter i en sundere retning og appellere til alle aldersgrupper i samfundet. Et centralt område i byplanlægningen er samspillet mellem arkitektur og sundhedsfremme – og arkitekturens bidrag er ikke længere begrænset til sunde materialer, lys, luft og kloakering.

In recent years, architecture has been preoccupied with the development of new functionalities, deliberately seeking to influence specific forms of behaviour, including increased physical activity in everyday life. Architecture has become an intervention in relation to promoting people’s choice of a healthy lifestyle. Urban spaces are to support everyday activities such as shopping and transport and at the same time create healthy activities, healthy transport forms, healthy leisure activities and healthy settings for work and school. The spaces are to shape existing everyday activities in a healthier direction, appealing to all age groups in society.

One central area in urban planning is the interplay between architecture and health promotion – and architecture’s contribution is no longer limited to healthy materials, light, air and sewerage systems.

Med så store krav til arkitekturen følger et ønske om at kunne undersøge, hvilke elementer i arkitekturen og i samspillet mellem rum og borgere, der skaber sundhed ved mødet og bevægelsen. Studiet tager udgangspunkt i case-studier af tre eksisterende byrum i København som alle er designet ud fra ønsket om at motivere til ophold og bevægelse. De tre udvalgte byrum er Charlotte Ammundsens Plads i Indre By, Multipladsen på Indre Nørrebro og Prags Boulevard på Amager.

Case-studierne er delt i to: en kvantitativ beskrivelse fra brugerne, ud fra aktivitetsmønstre, køn, alder og tilhørsforhold og en kvalitativ beskrivelse af forskellige interessenters oplevelse af arbejdet med pladserne fra planlægning, over realisering til aktuel hverdagsbrug.

Med udgangspunkt i værdibegreberne tryghed, synlighed, tilgængelighed, læ, æstetik, publikum, oplevelse, målgruppe, nærmiljø og identitet, analyseres de tre byrum ud fra observationer og interviews med brugere og nøglepersoner. Denne metode - at beskrive byrum kvantitativt og kvalitativt - har ført til udviklingen af et nyt analyseredskab som har fået navnet STOMB, System til Observation af Møde og Bevægelse. Redskabet er en videreudvikling af de eksisterende analyseredskaber, som i høj grad er koncentreret omkring den kvantitative del, i form af spørgeskemaer og målinger ved hjælp af accelerometre og GPS.

With such extensive requirements on architecture comes a desire to investigate which elements in architecture and the interplay between space and citizens create health in the encounter and through the movement. The study takes its starting point in case studies from three existing urban spaces in Copenhagen, which were all designed based on the desire to motivate people to spend time and move about in these spaces. The three selected urban spaces are Charlotte Amundsen Square in the inner city, Multipladsen square in the Inner Nørrebro district and Prags Boulevard on the island of Amager. The case studies are divided in two: a quantitative description from the users based on activity patterns, gender, age and affiliation, and a qualitative description of various stakeholders’ experience from working with the squares from planning, via realisation to current everyday use.

The three urban spaces are analysed on the basis of observations and interviews with users and key people, focusing on the value concepts of safety, visibility, accessibility, shelter, aesthetics, audience, experience, target group, immediate environment and identity. This method – describing urban spaces quantitatively and qualitatively – has led to the development of a new analysis tool, which has been named STOMB, System til Observation af Møde og Bevægelse (System for Observation of Meeting and Movement). The tool is a further development of the existing analysis tools, which are concentrated, to an extensive degree, around the quantitative part, in the form of questionnaires and measurements by means of accelerometers and GPS. Center for Byplanlægning har gennem en årrække indsamlet og analyseret eksempler på rumlig strategisk byplanlægning – det vil sige eksempler på omdannelsesstrategier i byer eller bydele, hvor der har været en tæt og innovativ integrering mellem den overordnede politisk-strategiske tænkning og de projekter der skal realisere strategierne. Materialet har været kommunikeret gennem forelæsninger og konferenceoplæg, og er nu under bearbejdning til en publikationsserie. Den første udgivelse, som forventes udgivet i foråret 2012, gennemgår fem franske eksempler fra Bordeaux, Lyon, Nancy, Nantes og La Pleine Saint Denis i Paris-regionen. Senere følger publikationer med eksempler på rumlig strategisk byplanlægning i Spanien, Holland, England, Italien og Finland.

Publikationerne henvender sig specifikt til masteruddannelsen i strategisk byplanlægning, og mere generelt til planlæggerfaget på Kunstakademiets Arkitektskole.

Over a number of years, the Center for Urban Planning has collected and analysed examples of spatial strategic urban planning – i.e. examples of transformation strategies in cities or city districts where there has been a dense and innovative integration between the overall political strategic mindset and the projects that are to realise the strategies. The material has been communicated through lectures and conference presentations, and it is now being processed into a series of publications.

The first publication, which will be released in the spring of 2012, examines five French examples from Bordeaux, Lyon, Nancy, Nantes and La Pleine Saint Denis in the Paris region. This will be followed by publications with examples of spatial strategic urban planning in Spain, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Italy and Finland. The publications are specifically aimed at the Master’s programme in strategic urban planning, and more generally at the planning subject as a whole at the School of Architecture.

Exploring the Informal City

75 % af byboere i den del af Afrika, der ligger syd for Sahara, bor i uformelle bosættelser af varierende størrelse, organisering og standard. Størstedelen af de uformelle bosættelser har dårlig vandforsyning og dårlige sanitetsforhold; de mangler åbne rum, har dårlige veje og er ikke anerkendt af deres regeringer. Mange huse er af meget dårlig standard. Og alligevel betragter millioner af beboere disse nabolag som deres hjem. Forskningen i DHS søger at dokumentere denne form for uformel urbanisering på baggrund af intensivt feltarbejde i 102 boliger i Maputo, Mozambique.

75 % of the urban population in Sub-Saharan Africa lives in informal settlements varying in size, organisation and standards. Most informal settlements have poor water and sanitation provision, a lack of open spaces, poor access roads and no recognition from governments. Many houses are substandard. However, millions of residents consider these neighbourhoods their home. The Department of Human Settlements Home Space research is attempting to document this kind of informal urbanisation based on intensive fieldwork in 102 houses in Maputo, Mozambique.

Som en del af dette forskningsprojekt fik 10 arkitektstuderende indblik i hverdagen, da de tilbragte fem uger hos familier i Maxaquene, et fattigt kvarter i Maputo. Der blev udarbejdet arkitekturopgaver med henblik på at konceptualisere denne form for urbanisering.

For en udenforstående har uformelle bosættelser kun meget lidt, hvis noget overhovedet, at byde på, hvad angår arkitektur, og bygningerne betegnes ofte blot som ‘shacks’ – skure. Dette forskningsprojekt forsøger at udfordre dette synspunkt, og ambitionen er at fremhæve det potentiale, der ligger i disse bosættelser som laboratorier for en forståelse af arkitektur uden arkitekter.

As part of this research project, 10 architecture students gained insight into everyday life when they lived five weeks with families in Maxaquene, a poor neighbourhood in Maputo. Architectural programmes were elaborated aimed at conceptualising this mode of urbanisation.

For an outsider, informal settlements have little, if anything, to offer in terms of architecture, as the buildings are often referred to simply as ‘shacks’. This research project attempts to challenge this viewpoint and the ambition is to highlight the potential built into these settlements as laboratories for understanding architecture without architects.
