Forskningen bygger på etablerede paradigmer i den teknisk-naturvidenskabelige forskningstradition, men arkitekturens synspunkter, betragtningsmåder og metoder er grundlaget for beskrivelsen og bearbejdningen af det teknologiske fagområde.

Instituttet består for øjeblikket af følgende fagområder: ’Anvendt byggeteknik’, ’Akustik’, ’Belysning’, ’Bærende konstruktioner’, ’Materiallære’, ’Klima’ samt Instituttets særlige indsatsområde, ’Industriel arkitektur’. Dette område varetages af Center for Industriel Arkitektur (CINARK), hvis formål er at styrke skolens, uddannelsens og fagets forståelse og udnyttelse af det arkitektoniske potentiale, der ligger i det industrialiserede byggeri og i den design- og vidensbaserede byggeindustri. For alle Instituttets områder og fag er målet at maksimere den arkitektoniske oplevelse, at udnytte det tektoniske potentiale og at fremme en bæredygtig bygningskultur. Årets forskningsmæssige fokus og de her viste projekter ligger inden for området tektonik i produktion og konstruktion og i området bæredygtighed i såvel ældre, fredede bygninger som i nybyggeri, og Instituttets forskere samarbejder med talrige eksterne parter fra byggeindustri over tegnestuer til nationale og internationale forskningsinstitutioner.

At the Institute of Architectural Technology, research and teaching relate to construction technology, construction physics, environmental and procedural structural design and production conditions that form the basis for the design of our physical surroundings, and which constitute a continual architectural challenge.

Institute research builds on established paradigms within the technical/scientific research tradition, but architectural views, approaches and methodologies form the basis for the description and processing of the technological subject area.

Currently, the Institute covers the following disciplines: ‘Applied Construction Technology’, ‘Acoustics’, ‘Lighting’, ‘Structures’, ‘Materials Science’, ‘Climate’ and the Institute’s special area of focus, ‘Industrial Architecture’. This area is handled by the Center for Industrial Architecture (CINARK), whose purpose is to strengthen the School’s, the degree programme’s and the profession’s understanding and use of the architectural potential of industrialised construction and the design and knowledge-based construction industry. The object of all the Institute’s fields and subjects is to maximise the architectural experience, to exploit the tectonic potential and to further a sustainable building culture.

This year’s research focus and the projects shown here are within the field of tectonics in production and construction and in the field of sustainability in both old, listed buildings and newbuild. The Institute’s researchers collaborate with numerous external partners ranging from the construction industry, over drawing offices to national and international research institutions.

Projektet udforsker hvilket potentiale, der kan opstå som en konsekvens af indførelsen af livscyklusbaserede, ressourcebevarende principper i byggeriet.

For at undgå, at den energi, der anvendes i byggeriets processer, går tabt ved nedrivningen, er det muligt at anvende to overordnede designstrategier:

The project investigates which potential may occur as a consequence of the introduction of lifecycle-based, resource-saving principles in construction. In order to prevent that the energy used in construction processes is lost at demolition, it is possible to use two overall design strategies:

1. Robusthed, der sigter imod en lang levetid for bygningerne gennem en generelt anvendelig dimensionering og rumlig disponering 2. Demonterbarhed, der sigter imod en lang levetid for bygningens komponenter ved at sikre at de kan genanvendes efter endt brug.

1. Sturdiness aimed at ensuring long life for the buildings through generally applicable dimensioning and spatial layouts.

2. Demountability that aims at long life for the building’s components by making sure that they can be reused once they are no longer to be used for their original purpose.

Den sidstnævnte strategi indebærer, at byggeteknikken er reversibel, og at designet således sigter imod en sideordnet betydning af konstruktion og dekonstruktion.

Begge strategier kan have betydning for bygningens rumlige og konstruktive artikulering, og projektet forsøger at kortlægge de typer af arkitektonisk formgivning og komposition, der knytter sig hertil. Formålet er at stimulere den faglige praksis til at accelerere indførelsen af ressourcebevarende principper i projekteringen og at bringe disse i anvendelse som redskab til at tilføre arkitekturen identitet i form af sanselige og sociale kvaliteter. Projektet diskuterer endvidere, hvilke ændringer af arkitektfagets rolle, der kan forudses som en konsekvens af en reversibel, og dermed transformerbar, byggeteknik.

For at kortlægge de arkitektoniske principper, der knytter sig til de respektive strategier og principper for opnåelse af lang levetid for bygninger og komponenter, analyseres cases ved hjælp af montagediagrammer på såvel bygnings- som detaljeniveau, hvorved den faktiske reversibilitet verificeres. Parallelt registreres de anvendte principper for den designmæssige artikulering af de konstruktive principper (‘tektoniske udsagn’). Ved at undersøge principper for konstruktion og artikulation for et stort antal cases fremkommer der ‘et tektonisk alfabet’, der kan danne udgangspunkt og referenceramme for en ressourcebevarende praksis. Erhvervspartnerens projekteringsopgaver anvendes så vidt muligt som laboratorium for afprøvning af de undersøgte principper.

The latter strategy implies that the construction technique is reversible and that the design aims at a co-ordinated significance of construction and deconstruction. Both strategies may be of importance to the building’s spatial and structural articulation, and the project seeks to map the types of architectural design and composition that are related to this. The objective is to stimulate the professional practice to accelerate the introduction of resource-saving principles in the structural design and to bring these to use as a tool for adding identity to the architecture in the form of material and social qualities. The project also discusses which changes are to be expected for the role of the architectural profession as a consequence of a reversible, and thus transformable, construction technique.

In order to map the architectural principles related to the respective strategies and principles for achieving long life for buildings and components, cases are analysed by means of mounting diagrams at both building and detail level, verifying the actual reversibility. In parallel to this, the applied principles for the design-related articulation of the structural principles (‘tectonic statements’) are registered.

Through the examination of principles for construction and articulation for a large number of cases, ‘a tectonic alphabet’ emerges, which can form the starting point and become a frame of reference for a resource-saving practice. The business partner’s structural design assignments are used wherever possible as a laboratory for testing the principles examined.

Projektet gik ud på at designe og bygge en tensegritetslysekrone til forhallen i det nyligt færdigbyggede Bella Sky Hotel i København. Efter at være blevet kontaktet af innovationsgruppen GXN fra arkitektfirmaet 3 x Nielsen (3xN), indgik konstruktionsgruppen BÆK ved Kunstakademiets Arkitektskole i den designgruppe, der skulle udvikle et koncept for en tensegritetslysekrone til Bella Sky Hotels hovedindgang. BÆK’s rolle var at definere tensegritetens endelige geometri og designe den bærende konstruktion med alle detaljer, inklusive befæstelser, og at bygge tensegritetslysekronen på stedet.

The project was to design and construct a tensegrity chandelier for the main entrance lobby of the recently finished Bella Sky Hotel in Copenhagen. Approached

by Innovation group GXN of Architectural practice 3 x Nielsen (3xN) the Structures group BÆK at KADK became part of the design team developing the idea of a tensegrity chandelier for the Bella Sky hotel entrance lobby. BÆK’s role was in defining the final geometry of the tensegrity, designing the load-bearing structure with all the details, fixings and also, constructing the tensegrity chandelier on site.

Tensegritet er en af de mest effektive bærende konstruktioner, der findes. I denne konstruktion opnås integriteten via spænding (‘integritet i spænd’ (på engelsk ‘tension’) = tensegritet), heraf navnet. Typisk består den af trykstænger, der ikke rører hinanden, frit ophængt ved hjælp af spændekabler. Kablerne er meget spinkle og nærmest ikke-eksisterende, så det ser ud, som om trykstængerne svæver frit.

Tensegrity is a type of a load-bearing structure which is one of the most-efficient structures known. It is a structure where the integrity of the structure is achieved through tension (integrity in tension = tensegrity), thus the name. Typically it consists of compression bars that do not touch, suspended in the air by tension cables. The cables are very slender and almost non-existent so it looks as if the compression bars are floating in thin air.

Den bærende konstruktion i tensegriteten på Bella Sky består af sekskantede kernealuminiumstænger, der er indsat i akrylrør. Hvert akrylrør har et specialfremstillet endestykke i aluminium i hver ende. Endestykkerne er forbundet med glidebeslag, der fastholder spændekablerne. Den sekskantede aluminiumskerne bærer lysdioderne, der beskyttes af tynde lameller, der holdes på plads af specialfremstillede akrylafstandsstykker indsat i akrylrørene.

The Bella Sky tensegrity load-bearing structure consists of hexagonal core aluminum bars inserted into acrylic tubes. Each acrylic tube has on both ends a specially fabricated aluminum end-fixing (cap). The end-caps are connected to gripglider fixings, that hold the tension cables. The aluminum hexagonal core carries the LED (lighting elements) which are defused by lamella strips held into position by purpose made acrylic spacers inserted into the acrylic tubes.

Undersøgelser af design af nye asymmetriske tensegritetskonstruktioner blev gennemført med parallel anvendelse af fysiske og computergenererede modeller. Nogle af undersøgelserne involverede Studieafdeling 8’s kandidat- og bachelorstuderende fra det forskningsbaserede forløb ‘Anvendt udvidet konceptuelt konstruktionsdesign’. Efter forløbets afslutning blev yderligere udviklingsarbejde udført for at definere detaljer og befæstelser og for at bygge selve konstruktionen.

Explorations into design of novel asymmetrical tensegrity structures were carried out using in parallel physical and computer models. Some of the explorations involved Study Department 8 Masters and BA students on the Applied Advanced Conceptual Structural Design research led course. After the course was finished, further development work was carried out to define the details and fixings and to construct the structure.

Evalueringen har set på følgende forhold i udvalgte eksempler på de senere års nyopførte ’billige boliger’: • Den arkitektoniske og designmæssige kvalitet • Boligernes tekniske kvalitet og produktionsteknologien bag • Bolig- og brugskvaliteten bedømt af beboerne

At the request of the KAB Foundation and the Boligfonden Kuben foundation, the newly built ‘inexpensive homes’ of the recent years have been evaluated. The evaluation examined the following conditions in selected examples of recent years’ newly built ‘inexpensive homes’: • Architectural and design-related quality • The technical quality of the homes and the underlying production technology • The housing and utility quality as assessed by the occupants

Inden for det seneste tiår er der opført en række bebyggelser i Danmark, som eksplicit tilstræber at være ’billige boliger’. De konkrete udspil har i forskellig udstrækning taget afsæt i udenlandske erfaringer med udviklingen af ’affordable housing’. Disse boligprojekter benytter sig på forskellig vis af præfabrikation og standardisering. De repræsenterer således en tilbagevenden til dele af filosofien bag de store planer i 1960’erne og 1970’erne, om end under nye produktionstekniske vilkår. I nogle af projekterne indgår også en finansiel komponent, der tilstræber lave ydelser, enten via offentlig subsidiering eller gennem privat krydssubsidiering.

Evalueringen forsøger at give et svar på, om de ’billige boliger’ reelt blev billige, set i lyset af deres kvalitet. Den henvender sig primært til de professionelle aktører på bygge- og boligmarkedet, såsom arkitekter og ingeniører, og til de almene boligorganisationer, private bygherrer og ejendomsinvestorer. Resultaterne fra evalueringen kan også være af interesse for nuværende og kommende beboere i billige boliger, hvad angår oplevelsen af bolig- og brugskvalitet. Endelig har de stiftende parter bag Fonden for Billige Boliger været interesseret i at få en uafhængig vurdering af initiativets foreløbige resultater. I forbindelse med evalueringen har der været afholdt et internt seminar med de involverede bygherrer, arkitekter og producenter med henblik på at kvalitetssikre resultaterne.

Over the last decade, a number of residential developments have been constructed in Denmark, which explicitly aim to be ‘inexpensive homes’. The concrete initiatives have taken their starting point in foreign experience with development of ‘affordable housing’ to varying degrees. These housing projects make use of prefabrication and standardisation in various ways. They represent a return to parts of the philosophy behind the great plans from the 1960s and 1970s, albeit under new production engineering conditions. Some of the projects also include a financial component, which aims to achieve low payments, either via public subsidies or via private cross-subsidisation.

The evaluation seeks to clarify whether the ‘inexpensive homes’ really were inexpensive, seen in the light of their quality. It is primarily addressed at professional players in the construction and housing market, such as architects and engineers, and at the non-profit housing associations , private clients and property investors. The results of the evaluation may also be of interest to current and future occupants of inexpensive homes, as regards the experience of the housing and utility quality. Finally, the founding partners behind the Foundation for Inexpensive Housing have been interested in getting an independent assessment of the preliminary results of the initiative. In connection with the evaluation, an internal seminar has been held with the involved clients, architects and manufacturers with a view to assuring the quality of the results.

‘Effektiv energi til EU’s kulturarv’ er et EU-finansieret projekt, hvor 22 tværfaglige samarbejdspartnere skal undersøge og implementere energieffektive løsninger i otte af Europas kulturhistoriske bygninger.

Efficient Energy for EU Cultural Heritage is an EU-funded project, where 22 interdisciplinary partners will investigate and implement energy efficient solutions for eight of Europe’s culture-historical buildings.

Projektet har til formål at bygge bro mellem bevaring af historiske bygninger og klimabeskyttelse, hvilket ikke er helt så antagonistisk, som det kunne lyde: historiske bygninger vil kun overleve, hvis de bliver vedligeholdt som levende rum.

Energieffektiv modernisering er nødvendig både for at beskytte konstruktioner og af hensyn til komfort.

The project goal is to bridge the gap between conservation of historic buildings and climate protection, which is not an antagonism at all: historic buildings will only survive if maintained as living space. Energy efficient retrofitting is useful for structural protection as well as for comfort reasons.

De væsentligste mål er at udvikle passive og aktive løsninger vedrørende bevaring og energieffektiv modernisering med brug af både disponible og nyudviklede produkter ved at inddrage SMVer (små og mellemstore virksomheder). En af opgaverne ligger i København, nemlig Fæstningens Materialgård. Realdania Byg er entreprenør på dette projekt og har påbegyndt implementering af energieffektive løsninger.

The main objectives are the development of passive and active solutions for conservation and energy efficient retrofitting including available products as well as new developments by involved SMEs (Small and Medium-sized Enterprises). One of the cases is located in Copenhagen and, i.e. ‘Fæstningens Materialgård’, the former place for materials and repair work of the fortress. Realdania Byg is the developer of this project and have started the implementation of energy efficient solutions.

How do we become better at designing sustainably – particularly by exploiting the light and heat of the Sun as an architectural potential for reducing buildings’ energy consumption?

Dagslyset er en af de vigtigste ressourcer i udviklingen af energioptimeret, bæredygtig arkitektur. Når man taler om energi er det oftest som et teknisk parameter, men frem for alt handler energi om liv og livskvalitet. Solens stråler er på samme tid både varme og lys, og menneskets biologi er tæt knyttet til energien herfra. Dagslyset er afgørende for menneskers helbred og velbefindende, og har siden vores kulturs begyndelse været afgørende for vores måde at opleve og skabe rum på. Dagslys og solvarme er rumlige og sanselige arkitektoniske oplevelseskvaliteter som er afgørende for bygningers energiforbrug.

Studiets omdrejningspunkt er forholdet mellem bygningers kontekst, form og disposition og deres energiforbrug som funktion af belysningsbehov og varmetilskud fra sollyset. Udviklingsstrategier undersøges for bæredygtig arkitektur med dagslys som fokus. 3D-simuleringsværktøjer anvendes til at formulere og støtte kvalitative og kvantitative bedømmelseskriterier.

Undersøgelsen omfatter skalaerne bebyggelse, bygningskrop og klimaskærm, for at etablere dybde i den metodiske tilgang. Målet er at kvalificere de tidlige faser i den arkitektoniske formgivningsproces, hvor de mest vidtrækkende beslutninger tages for bygningers fremtidige energiforbrug og miljø.

Daylight is one of the most important resources in the development of energyoptimised, sustainable architecture. When energy is mentioned it is often as a technical parameter; however, energy is first of all about life and quality of life. The rays of the Sun are both heat and light, and man’s biology is closely related to the energy from the Sun. Daylight is essential for man’s health and well-being, and from the beginning of our culture, it has been decisive for our way of experiencing and creating spaces. Daylight and solar heating are spatial and sensory architectural experience qualities that are crucial to buildings’ energy consumption.

This study’s pivotal point is the relation between buildings’ context, form and layout and their energy consumption as a function of lighting requirement and heat supply from sunlight. Development strategies are studied for sustainable architecture with daylight as a focus. 3D simulation tools are used to phrase and support qualitative and quantitative assessment criteria. The study includes the scales of built-up area, building body and climate screen in order to establish depth in the methodological approach. The objective is to raise the quality of the early stages in the architectural design process where the most far-reaching decisions are made for the buildings’ future energy consumption and environment.

Architectural Potentials in the Use of Industrial Robots in the Production of Concrete Buildings

Forskningsprojektets mål er at afdække arkitektoniske muligheder ved indførsel af industrirobotter i betonbyggeri. Først belyses hvorledes robotten kan aktivere og udnytte betons ekstreme formpotentiale, samt interagere med den arkitektoniske designproces. Dernæst eksemplificeres hvor og hvordan robotten kan indgå i betonindustriernes praksis, således at en designproces også i fremtiden kan gennemføres i et samspil imellem arkitektens vision, betonen som byggemateriale og byggeriets fabrikation. Forskningsprojektets eksperimenter, der udføres på Det Højteknologiske Betonværksted, DTI, viser at udfordringer som terrænspring, overflade-finish og adaptive bygningskomponenter kan imødegås ved hjælp af digitale teknikker. Da eksperimenterne tager afsæt i arkitektpraksis og fabrikationen er udført med en standardindustrirobot og et fuldautomatisk blandeanlæg, skal resultaterne være mulige at overføre til byggepraksis.

Fabrikationsteknikkerne skal bruges i samspil med og forlængelse af kendte digitale formgivningsteknikker, og ses som et digitalt tilskud til betonbyggeriet.

Derved kan robotfabrikation bidrage til en nyindustriel bygningskultur, ved at tilføje meningsfulde lag til arkitekturens funktionalitet og æstetik.

The research project’s objective is to identify architectural options related to the introduction of industrial robots in concrete construction. First, the project discusses how the robot can activate and exploit the extreme form potential of concrete and interact with the architectural design process. Then examples are given of where and how the robot can form part of the concrete industries’ practice, so that also in future, a design process can be completed in interplay between the architect’s vision, concrete as a construction material and the production of the building. The research project’s experiments, which are conducted at The High-Tech Concrete Workshop at the Danish Technological Institute, show that challenges such as terrain variations, surface finish and adaptive building components can be met by means of digital techniques. As the experiments are based on architectural practice, and the production is carried out using a standard industrial robot and a fully automatic mixing system, it should be possible to transfer the results to construction practice. The production techniques are to be used in interplay with and as an extension of known digital design techniques, and they should be considered a digital addition to concrete construction. In this way, robot production can contribute to a new industrial construction culture by adding meaningful layers to architecture’s functionality and aesthetics.

Tectonics in building culture: Concrete

‘Tektonik i bygningskultur’ er et forskningsområde, hvor et udvalgt materiales tektoniske aspekter undersøges i forhold til lokal bygningskultur og innovation. Fire bygningsmaterialer er blevet undersøgt: ‘Træ’ i Norge i 2007, ‘Teglsten’ i Nederlandene i 2008, ‘Tekstilblokke’ (natursten) i Irland i 2009, og senest ‘Concretum’ (beton) i Danmark i 2010. Disse Erasmus-workshops organiseres i samarbejde mellem værtsuniversiteterne og Liechtensteins Universitet som koordinator med støtte fra EU. Tektoniske undersøgelser og materialeeksperimenter er baseret på en række teoretiske og praktiske gruppearbejder. De forskellige workshops konfronterer i praksis studerende og undervisere med fysikkens love for et tilsyneladende velkendt materiale, og indledende studier og udflugter udgør den relaterede kulturelle baggrund for stoflighed og tektonik. Med de forskellige workshops får studerende og undervisere en intensiv, faglig, tværkulturel oplevelse, der nedbryder barrierer mellem idé, tanke og fremstilling. Erasmus IP 2010-workshoppen ‘Concretum’ fandt sted i Nexø på Bornholm. Programmets formål var at undersøge betons uforløste potentialer ved at anvende tekstil som et meget fleksibelt formgivningsmateriale. 45 meget engagerede studerende og undervisere fra otte europæiske arkitektskoler deltog og udførte fire projekter i fuld skala på stedet: en bro, en væg, siddende skulpturer og opbevaringssteder for brænde.

‘Tectonics in building culture’ is a field of research, where tectonic aspects of a selected material related to local building culture and innovation is studied. Four building materials have been studied: ‘Wood’ in Norway 2007, ‘Brickwork’ in the Netherlands 2008, ‘Textile Blocks’ in Ireland 2009 and last ‘Concretum’, in Denmark 2010. The Erasmus workshops are organized in collaboration between the hosting universities and the coordinating University of Liechtenstein and are supported by the European Community.

Tectonic studies and material experiments are based on a succession of theoretical and practical group works. The workshops confront students and teachers with physical laws of a seemingly well-known material, and preliminary studies and excursions provide the related cultural background for materiality and tectonics.

The workshops give an intensive, academic, cross-cultural experience that breaks down barriers between idea, thinking and making. The Erasmus IP 2010 workshop “Concretum” took place in Nexø, Bornholm. The program aimed to study concrete’s unseen potentials by the use of textile as a most flexible form material. 45 very dedicated students and teachers from eight European Architect schools took part and realized four full-scale projects on site; a bridge, a wall, sitting sculptures and store places for firewood.
