Celebrating words, stories and imagination

Our programme showcases fun, family-friendly, innovative events over three days, in a range of venues across the city. Children will have a chance to meet their favourite authors and illustrators, experience beautiful music, take part in craft workshops, develop new skills and have their imaginations sparked left, right and centre. Humdinger! will inspire a love of reading for years to come and is sure to be a must-attend event for the babies, children and parents in 2013.

Dog Ears is an award-winning children’s media company based in Derry, making books, apps, tv and events for children. Dog Ears is about to start production on an animated TV series IHDWXULQJ 0LVV 5RVLH 5HG LWV ˉUVW FKLOGUHQČ V character, created by local writer and author, Trisha Deery. Since setting up in 2010 Dog Ears has proven that there is a huge appetite in Derry-Londonderry for children’s events which celebrate books and offer children and parents quality experiences. We’re committed to bringing the best writers Fionnuala, Laura, Jackie, John + Trisha and illustrators to meet local children and we Dog Ears Ltd. wanted to do something amazing for UK City of Culture 2013. Roddy Doyle A special treat for World Book Day, and a chance to be read to by one of our literary greats When? Thursday 7th March, 10am Where? The Theatre in The Playhouse Booking: derryplayhouse.co.uk / 02871 268027 Price: £2 Age range: 8-12 years Roddy Doyle will be reading from his extensive catalogue of books in the beautiful surroundings of The Playhouse followed by a question and answer session. Roddy Doyle is the author of nine novels, two collections of stories, and Rory & Ita, a memoir of his parents. He has written six books for children and has contributed to a variety of publications including The New Yorker, McSweeney’s, Metro Eireann and several anthologies. He won the Booker Prize in 1993, for Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha. Roddy has written for the stage and his plays include Brownbread and Guess Who’s Coming for the Dinner. He co-adapted with Joe O’Byrne his novel The Woman who Walked into Doors and he co-wrote with Bisi Adigun a new version of The Playboy of the Western World. He also wrote the screenplays for The Snapper, The Van, Family, When Brendan Met Trudy and he co-wrote the screenplay for The Commitments. Meet the man himself after the performance, buy a book and get it signed at the festival bookshop in the Playhouse Plaza.

Meg Rosoff A session with school groups talking about her ZULWLQJ LQVSLUDWLRQ DQG ˉQGLQJ D YRLFH When? Friday 8th 1.30pm Where? The Assembly Hall in St. Cecilia’s College Booking: Catherine Currie at St. Cecilia’s College / 02871 281800 Price: Free and open to all school groups Age range: 14-16 years Meg Rosoff was born in Boston, educated at Harvard and St Martin’s College of Art in London, and worked in New York City for ten years before moving to England permanently in 1989. She is best known for the novel How I Live Now 3XIˉQ ZKLFK ZRQ WKH Guardian Prize, Printz Award, and Branford Boase Award and made the Whitbread Awards shortlist. Her second novel, Just In Case (Penguin, 2006) won the annual Carnegie Medal in Literature from the British librarians recognising the year’s best children’s book published in the U.K. She worked in publishing, journalism, politics and advertising before writing How I Live Now (which is due to be released in 2013 as a IHDWXUH ˉOP GLUHFWHG E\ .HYLQ 0DF'RQDOG and starring Saoirse Ronan). Her books have won or been shortlisted for 18 international book prizes, including the &DUQHJLH PHGDO DQG WKH 2UDQJH ˉUVW novel prize. Meg’s most recent book is There Is No Dog. Picture Me Gone, her sixth novel, will be published this month. After the performance in St. Cecilia’s, Meg will be available to sign her books. Quercus Ensemble Roald Dahl’s Little Red Riding Hood – a musical story telling event for all the family. When? Thursday 7th and Friday 8th at 1.30pm Where? The Gallery in The Playhouse Booking: derryplayhouse.co.uk / 02871 268027 Price: £2 Age range: 4+ years Come along and experience this fantastic musical adaptation by the composer Paul Patterson of Roald Dahl’s dark and funny take on the traditional fairy tale. BEWARE! Prepare for a few of Roald Dahl’s twists and turns along the way – this is not the story quite as you know it! The performance will be accompanied by projected images of Quentin Blake’s original illustrations. 4XHUFXV (QVHPEOH GUDZV RQ VRPH RI ,UHODQGȠV ˉQHVW internationally renowned musicians, and aspires to breathe new life into classical music with its fresh and dynamic performances. This production for chamber ensemble and narrator offers a wonderful opportunity for children to experience live music and meet the performers and their instruments. This production is supported by the Roald Dahl Foundation.

Pictiúr Contemporary Book Illustration from Ireland 2013 When? Monday 25th February until March 11th, 9am to 5pm Where? The Plaza area of The Playhouse Price: Free Pictiúr is a brand new touring exhibition of Irish Children’s Book Illustration, which will coincide with the Irish Presidency of the Council of The European Union. As a way of highlighting Ireland during its EU Presidency in 2013, Children’s Books Ireland, under the auspices of Laureate na nÓg, the exhibition will bring the work of twenty Irish children’s books illustrators to international audiences in Austria, Italy and Belgium in 2013. He will be reading from his books, and focussing mainly on his picture books. Derek Keilty Fantasy meets Wild West! When? Saturday 9th March, 4pm Where? The Gallery in The Playhouse Booking: derryplayhouse.co.uk / 02871 268027 Price: £2 Age range: 8-12 years Derek Keilty began writing in 2000 as a new millennium resolution and hasn’t looked back. His debut series, Will Gallows, features elves, snake-bellied trolls and the sky cavalry cowboys! He currently has a thriving schools programme, storytelling and taking creative writing workshops around local schools. Derek lives in Northern Ireland with his wife, Elaine, who is Canadian, and has twin daughters, Sarah-Jane and Rebekah.

Series of Scary Stories! When? Friday 8th, 11am Where? The Central Library, Foyle Street Booking: None, free public event Age range: 0-3 years 'RJ (DUV DUH GHOLJKWHG WR KRVW WKH RIˉFLDO launch of the beautiful board book Baby’s Day Out at the Rhyme Time session in the Central Library. Every child born in 2013 will be gifted a specially commissioned book to encourage parents and children to embrace books and reading together from day one. The board books are a lovely keepsake and create a lasting legacy for all the 2013 babies. Come along and enjoy the celebration. Anita Robinson will read the book aloud and from a selection of other favourites to suit the young audience. Live music and refreshments will be served for all to enjoy. This project has been supported by:

David Maybury and Deirdre Sullivan will be telling scary stories from the Annie Graves collection throughout the afternoon in the Plaza area of The Playhouse.

Clive McFarland Live Mural Drawing Clive McFarland created the beautiful Humdinger! Logo and artwork and will be at The Playhouse on Saturday afternoon creating a large mural on the spot! Since he was little he only wanted to draw things and avoid papercuts. He grew up in Northern Ireland but took a boat to Liverpool to study animation and illustration at Liverpool School of Art and Design. Surviving endless paper cuts, KH SDVVHG KLV GHJUHH ZLWK ˊ\LQJ FRORXUV DQG DIWHU D IHZ RWKHU less exciting jobs) became an illustrator. Indoor Picnic It might be Spring, but we thought it might be wiser to have our Humdinger! Picnic with a roof over our heads. Our festival sponsor, Tesco, will host an Indoor Picnic at the Playhouse on Saturday 9th March, to coincide with the various craft workshop and reading events taking place there throughout the day.

The Little Festival of Books as part of the Humdinger! The festival runs from 7th to 9th March and will feature a series of Irish language storytelling and reading events for children alongside an Irish language book-fair featuring the very best in Irish language publishing. Make Your Own Book-ends Fab Lab, Nerve Centre A Fab Lab (fabrication laboratory) is a fully kitted fabrication workshop which gives everyone in the community from small children through to entrepreneurs and businesses, the capability to turn their ideas and concepts into reality. Using 2d and 3d design software, coupled with 3d printers, laser cutters, vinyl cutters and routers, users can design and make almost anything. For this workshop participants will design and manufacture custom personalised book-ends.

Aileen McDaid was the head of Art in St. Mary’s College for over twenty years and taught there for almost thirty-six years. She has inspired local children to develop their artistic talents and passed on her passion for collage, fabric, Art Noveau and ‘drawing what you see.’ Along with former pupil, Kerry McWilliams, who’s now an Art Teacher too, Aileen will explore how children can tell their own stories through colours, symbols and shapes they see in their home-town.
