Dear Colleagues, We started off another year in the midst of an ongoing adventure and 2017 has already proven to be impressive! We have reaped the rewards of our dedication, effort and passion for service by receiving many prizes and acknowledgements from renowned organizations such as TripAdvisor, Travvy Awards, and Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards, to mention just a few. These past few months also witnessed our first experience with the “Great Place to Work” (GPTW) project, which was intense and exciting for all of us. We are proud to share how successful this process was: we had 87% staff participation, and four countries received GPTW certification! We are delighted with this result which is an indicator that we are on the right path. It also gives us a guideline to work with in order to continue to evolve our corporate culture and make our locations a special place in which employees feel satisfied, happy and proud to be a part of our Karisma Family. In previous editions of this magazine we have shared our ambitious plans for expansion goals into 2020, and in this issue we introduce you to our “New Projects” team which is in charge of coordinating the development of our new hotels. Karisma is a solid and successful organization with ongoing growth plans and a great group of professionals to support our innovative products; because of that we have been able to establish important strategic alliances with world class institutions such as Nickelodeon™, MTV, JFW, Canada Beef and TUI; now we are adding Margaritaville to our portfolio. We proudly announce that Karisma Hotels & Resorts will develop the “Margaritaville, an All-Inclusive Experience by Karisma,” chain of resorts in Mexico and the Caribbean. There are many challenges and opportunities ahead for all of us. To successfully achieve all the objectives for 2017, let’s keep up the Passion that characterizes us in all of our actions!

WELCOME TO THE KARISMA FAMILY

These are the new talents that have recently joined our team, bringing with them vast experience to help grow our organization. We are also proud to announce some internal promotions: MARIEL HERNÁNDEZ Operations Project Management Coordinator – Hotel Division

On January 23rd, 2017, Mariel Hernández was promoted to the position of Operations Project Management Coordinator – Hotel Division, reporting directly to Mr. Sasa Milojevic. Mariel has grown professionally in our organization; since 2008 she has held several operations and administrative positions prior to her most recent one as e-Commerce Manager. Ms. Hernández received a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and a Bachelor’s Degree in Advertising and Public Relations from the Universidad Veracruzana. Mariel has also attained several certifications and diplomas, including Green Belt and Six Sigma methodology and a Master’s Degree in Revenue Management from Cornell University. Her excellent performance within the framework of the hotel industry, the support and strategic roles she has held, her experience in project management, varied technical skills, along with her fluency in English and Spanish will certainly be an important success factor for her new Operations activities.

INDHIRA FERMIN Inventory Control Manager for the Dominican Republic and Jamaica

On February 1st, 2017, Ms. Indhira Fermín was promoted to Inventory Control Manager for the Dominican Republic and Jamaica properties, reporting directly to Mr. Enrico Lindenhahn, Director of Operations of the Caribbean, and to Mr. Rinaldo Fernández regarding Exotic & Prestige Travelers - PGS. Indhira has grown professionally in our organization, entering the hotel industry in the Decameron chain in the Dominican Republic before joining our organization in 2011 in Inventory Control. There, she progressed to become Senior Manager of Reservations, also taking the Inventory Control for PGS an Travel Club in 2016, duties which she will continue taking responsibilities, under supervision of Mr. Rinaldo Fernández.

EDUARDO JIMÉNEZ E-Commerce Manager

Mr. Eduardo Jiménez became a part of our organization on December 19th, 2016 as our new e-Commerce Manager, reporting directly to Mr. Arturo Nieto, Sales Manager. Eduardo has considerable experience in the hospitality industry at renowned companies such as Bahía Príncipe, Oasis Hotels & Resorts and Grupo Lomas Travel. He began his career in the reception area, and his last employer promoted him to Product Manager. His hotelier knowledge, product strategy and online commerce experience coupled with his fluent English, German and Portuguese are valuable assets to support our company’s growth.

MILAN PAVICEVIC General Manager of Wind Rose Resort by Karisma

Mr. Milan Pavićević became a part of the Karisma Adriatic family on January 20th as General Manager of the Wind Rose Resort by Karisma, in Bar, Montenegro. Mr. Pavićević spent years managing hotels and top notch luxury resorts. He earned his designation at the University of Belgrade, with the Department of Tourism, within the Science and Mathematics Faculty. His native tongue is Serbian, but he is versed in English and Russian as well.

The greenhouse meets the SAN standard for the production of basil, mint, habanero chili pepper, cucumber and tomato. Rainforest Alliance is an institution that works to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods. The ‘green frog’ seal assures consumers that the products come from farms managed under the stringent SAN standard, designed to provide employees and their families dignified safety conditions, and to protect wildlife and bodies of water.

KARISMA HOTELS IN MEXICO RECEIVE “DISTINTIVO S” AWARD RENEWAL

O

ur hotels in Mexico received, in early 2017, the renewal of their “Distintivo S”, awarded by Mexico’s Federal Ministry of Tourism (SECTUR), which acknowledges the hotels’ efforts and achievements regarding sustainability. This recognition enhances the numerous other awards that Karisma hotels have received for the success of its “Passion for Sustainability” Program. According to SECTUR, the “Distintivo ‘S’ “ is recognition of good sustainable practices in the development of tourism projects and the commitment from tourism companies operating in Mexico under the global criteria of sustainability. One of the main objectives of the implementation of this award is to take advantage of Mexico’s tourism potential to cause a greater economic spillover in the country. It is well known that tourism aids in the likelihood of new job creation and helps improve markets that preserve natural and cultural wealth. This is why it is imperative to establish a model of sustainable tourism

A

zul Beach Resort Sensatori Jamaica successfully completed the audit process and obtained the Travelife Gold Certification.

Travelife is an international certification system for sustainability in hotels. This certification acknowledges the commitment of managers and employees in the implementation of measures that protect the environment and the community in which they operate while supporting the cultural and social milieu. Participation of the whole team in good environmental practices was crucial in achieving this distinction.

GET TO KNOW THE DETAILS OF THE 9TH EDITION OF THE GIVC AWARDS AND SALES & MARKETING FORUM

I

n December, El Dorado Royal hosted the 9th annual edition of the Gourmet Inclusive® Vacation Consultant Awards and Sales & Marketing Forum where we recognize the most outstanding travel professionals in the industry.

About 600 travel consultants gathered in meetings, presentations and celebrations in which ongoing projects, news and future releases were announced. During the four days of the event there was a Marketing Forum, tours of Karisma’s properties, a beach party at El Dorado Maroma and other activities. A gala dinner was held to crown the winners of the GIVC Awards, who we recognize and thank the best consultants and travel agents for their excellent performance. A thrilling moment was the delivery of the Corazón (Heart) Awards through which travel consultants recognize the hotel’s staff for their effort, dedication and quality at Karisma’s various properties.

On the agenda for this convention, growth plans were announced for the upcoming years, the 2017 openings of Azul Beach Resort Sensatori in Negril, Jamaica, Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts Riviera Maya and a new property in Huatulco, Mexico. Azul Beach Resort The Fives, by Karisma will feature Club82, the first international Jackson Family Wines tasting room, an expansion project of 60 new suites and the launch of the Nickelodeon Experience. Generations Riviera Maya, by Karisma will incorporate Palafitos - Overwater Bungalows for all ages and a new events hall. El Dorado Maroma will showcase the destination’s largest spa in 2017. Since 2008 the GIVC program has brought together a group of elite travel agents who, by maintaining excellent standards exceed the expectations of clients with their excellent service and advice.

Our GIVCs receive benefits such as marketing tools and additional incentives for their clients. Thanks to this committed and loyal relationship between Karisma and our travel agents, we have managed to grow and position ourselves to better satisfy our guests. We will continue to work hand in hand with our alliances to bring the growth and expansion projects we have at our doorstep to fruition.

D

orota grew up on the shore of the Wroclow River in Poland, Eastern Europe, but her love for travel, bigger islands, bigger shores and perfecting her knowledge brought her to London at the dawn of the new century. Her passion for languages and innovation in her new home, the capital of the ‘old continent’ marked a new chapter in her life through the Edgeware Academy Department for English and Computer Sciences and later at the Chartered Institute of Marketing Hospitality Department while at the same time working in the hospitality services. She traveled whenever possible and this is how she fell in love with Mexico. She joined Karisma through the mix of the enchanting Riviera Maya and her own passion some 13 years ago. It is through the sheer force of the Karisma Family and following her heart and intuition that her Karismatic heritage is written. Dorota’s induction into the World of Karisma started with Hidden Beach Resort and required a palate of situations to get used to as still one of the most unique products in our portfolio. Her position as Concierge and Front Desk Clerk in 2003 soon proved she was a force not to be messed with. Her superior at the time was our current Vice-President of Corporate Affairs and Business Development, Mr. Ruben Becerra, who holds the sharpest eye and an inclination for greatness.

“Since day one, Dorota showed that she was always willing to go the extra mile to get things done, always showed loyalty for Karisma as well as great potential with any and all responsibilities given to her. It was an honor to have worked with Dorota, and is to this day”.

Moving from Hidden Beach operations to the sales department at El Dorado Seaside Suites and then to the corporate Sales office, Dorota first became a Sales Manager for NE USA 10 years ago, then moved on to be the Regional Sales & Marketing Manager for SE USA and when Karisma needed a representative for our relationship with TUI, Dorota was the natural choice. London was her home and the TUI & Karisma relationship her passion. She was crucial to the TUI and Karisma relations and very quickly the team in UK expanded to accommodate her throughout the years. In 2013, when Karisma Adriatic started, Dorota worked on and followed the activities closely, and when the activities expanded in 2015 she was already in charge of her new home to be, the Sales & Marketing Office for Karisma Europe in WMS.

Travelling between London, Croatia and Belgrade throughout the year was not easy, but it was worth it as Karisma Adriatic and Karisma sales in Europe grew - another fort to conquer, another force to strengthen. Our Vice President of Sales & Marketing Mr. Rienk De Jong, Dorota’s mentor and superior now believes and knows “Dorota excels in all the tasks she has taken upon her in Karisma, her smiling package cleverly hides a tough negotiator whose dedication and loyalty is not only seen in her results over the last 13 years, but moreover in her international growth path within our company” And thus, ends our history and heritage lesson in writing. It is a pleasure for both Karisma global and Karisma Adriatic to host such dreamers.

COUNTING

THE REGION DECEMBER 2016 By: Aleksandra Nenadic

N

ew Year’s across the globe includes fun, music, smiles, presents, scents, tastes and all the little things that mark the end of the calendar year. It also includes feedback and reports, individual or collective, personal or professional. The festive season often includes numerous other observances around this time, and if you believe in team work, team love, and team joy, you are blessed with marking day upon day from early December to mid-January. Here are some Diary Excerpts from our regional offices and hotels and the fun of winter in the region. The beginning of December is already a busy time for all of us, from menu planning to travel requests and bookings to present lists and shoe hunting, we spend our free time hunting and searching and our coffee breaks at work are used for Secret Santa organization and office decoration. Our favorite spot for searching for presents is the Christmas Market in Zagreb, which has been nominated two years in a row by Trip Advisor for the Best Christmas Market. Advent in Zagreb started last year from November 26th and lasted until January 8th. You can imagine the joy and fun of searching for presents at one of the best markets in the world!

NAL DIARY FOR 6 & JANUARY 2017 We then went through hectic December making all sorts of lists, including Christmas greetings, picking red ties for those fancy events we have lined up and sparkly thematic outfits for Office Parties. This year, WMS had to accessorize in silver and purple but this task did not stop us from being the most fun and the happiest group in a local Belgrade restaurant.

Even though snow is rare for the Adriatic, look at our amazing Sensimar Kalamota Island Resort in summer and winter!

New Year’s came and went, yet in the region we had another Christmas, and another New Year – yes, by the old Julian calendar Orthodox New Year is celebrated on January 13!

The debut of Margaritaville, an All-Inclusive Experience, by Karisma, will mark a handful of exciting milestones for Margaritaville, including its first all-inclusive resorts, which will be some of the largest properties in its growing hospitality portfolio. n recognition of service quality and high level of customer satisfaction, El Dorado Maroma, a Beachfront Resort, by Karisma, was chosen by Signature Travel Network’s board of directors to join its exclusive program. El Dorado Maroma will appear on the website and publications as a ‘favorite’ hotel and will be recommended by the more than 6000 travel agents that are part of this network. This will let us reach an even larger number of clients and allow us to participate in international promotional events. Signature Travel Network customers will receive special amenities and benefits. This agreement will be in force from January 1st to December 31st, 2017. The passion and commitment of the Karisma team of employees in offering our guests unique experiences makes this type of strategic alliance possible, and it helps consolidate us as leaders in the industry. FOR SEA TURTLES

We have been actively participating in the Sea Turtle Conservation Program, coordinating our efforts with authorities and local associations to protect and monitor Loggerhead and White turtle nests. These are 2016 results:

We undertook various endeavors, initiatives and events in order to raise awareness and promote a sustainable culture among employees, suppliers and the local community. Here are some of the most relevant accomplishments of last year:

Documentation

-22 sustainability policies were revised, created or updated. -Waste Management processes and formats were standardized among all of our hotels. -A Sustainability Policy was completed, using a democratic approach by which it was validated by each General Manager. -A new Environmental Regulatory Compliance Policy was created.

Broadcasting 194 nests in the EDR y EDSS camps, with over 16,000 Loggerhead and White Turtle hatchlings released.

Members of the State and Municipal Committee for the protection of Sea Turtles (Puerto Morelos and Solidaridad municipalities)

WE BEGIN OUR JOURNEY TOWARD WORKPLACE CULTURE TRANSFORMATION

F

rom October to early December all business units of the Karisma Group - except those in Europe participated in the organizational climate survey by the “Great Place To Work® Institute” (GPTW). Each property held activities to inform everyone about this institute and its certification process and encourage participation in the survey.

As a result of these activities our first survey was carried out successfully with over 87% participation among all locations.

“Great Place To Work®” is a workplace culture transformation program that measures the trust and commitment rate among employees through business practices and their leaders.


Great Place To WorkÂŽ

A great place to work is one where objectives of the organization are achieved while their people give their best and work as a team or family in an atmosphere of trust. According to GPTW, a 70% achievement rating shows that there is a good work environment, and this is the minimum rating required to achieve certification as a Great Place to Work. Happily, we can say that four of the countries surveyed received certification as a Great Place to Work! This acknowledgement fills us with pride and satisfaction, since it is our coworkers that expressed their own opinions and said they recognized the efforts that our organization has put forth to create a pleasant, trustworthy work environment in which teamwork and partnership make it possible to attain excellent achievements.

Through its surveys, GPTW measures nearly 60 reagents in 5 strategic dimensions to foster a great atmosphere in which to work: Credibility, Respect, Fairness, Pride and Camaraderie. In addition to the Employee Survey, a Workplace Culture Assessment was taken that reviewed the practices and policies of the organization and its leaders that promote an elevated trust environment. We are sure that the success and growth we have experienced until now has been the result of teamwork and efforts from all members the company. We are proud to have such talented, professional and committed partners.

At Karisma we are proud to be part of this great family and this was reflected in the survey: 87% of the employees said they were proud to belong to this organization.

We believe that as long as our staff is happy, the company will achieve its goals, and this will aid in bringing all the projects and milestones that lay ahead to fruition. We have taken a big step in strengthening our organizational practices in order to be a Great Place to Work, and we will continue to implement these initiatives so that we can all work to build an awesome place where our passion and commitment will lead us to continue growing personally and as a company, like a big family: The Karisma Family.

KARISMA FOUNDATION: A PASSION FOR HELPING

D

uring these past months, we brought many activities and initiatives to the table, to continue doing our part in helping our coworkers, their families and our local communities.

In November and December, our hotels and offices in Mexico put on a Toy-a-thon. Employees all chipped in with ‘gently used’ toys to help Mayan children smile in their communities and Children’s Shelters. Thanks to the participation and good turn-out, more than 1180 ‘smiles’ were distributed to these communities and shelters, channeled through government institutions and associations. Many thanks to all for helping Santa and the Three Kings in their noble work!

W

e are also working on the implementation of a Nutrition Campaign. During these months, we have worked on the development of a healthy, varied and nutritious menu, then training the kitchen staff to implement preparation techniques that will ensure they achieve their goal of providing the most wholesome food available for our staff.

W

e continue to deliver wheelchairs to families of our employees and to charity institutions such as CRIT (Centers of Infant Rehab and Inclusion from the Telethon Foundation, a non-profit NGO). A wheelchair is a big investment that many families cannot afford, and there are special considerations that are exacerbated by the patient’s condition. Through Karisma Foundation, we do our part to improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

The acid test for this project will be carried out in the Azul Beach Resorts Riviera Maya and Azul Beach Resorts Sensatori Mexico. Posters are being placed in the cafeterias, to inform and sensitize employees on the importance of good eating habits. In our next edition we will continue to share the progress of this project that endeavors to benefit all of our employees by promoting a healthy lifestyle.

he Karisma Ambassadors career development program was introduced and implemented successfully. This initiative is central to the company’s development and expansion strategies, whose purpose is to enhance the personal growth of employees who are top performers. The program has a comprehensive training process in which employees increase their knowledge and skills through specialized courses, a life and career plan as well as a coaching program. Our first generation of Karisma Ambassadors has started their training program with the passion that characterizes us and we are sure that this will be an inspiring process for these ambassadors and for the whole organization.

-Savings Trust Fund: In order to promote the habit of saving money, employees can have a certain amount saved off their bi-weekly paychecks and put it in a Trust Fund, to have it dispensed back to them at the end of the year. We held a gathering to celebrate the Trust Fund payments to our employees and commended them for their efforts in saving, and in helping spread the news about the benefits this new tool contributes to the family budget. -Secret Friend: Each Sales Room organized a gift exchange to foster a friendly atmosphere, where we enjoyed spoiling a ‘Secret Friend’ with a gift. -Food Pantry: We provided a food package and apple cider for our staff. We celebrated the traditional ‘Wise Men’s Day’ with a gathering to share a ‘Rosca de Reyes’ (Mexican Traditional King’s Pastry, representing the “Wise Men’s” search for the King of the Jews) in all the Sales Offices and Rooms.

El Dorado Maroma, also festive, celebrated their 9th anniversary with fellowship, food, mariachi, and toasts, remembering that it was in this year that the Palafitos concept was introduced. El Dorado Seaside Suites celebrated their 24th anniversary with a thanksgiving mass and a small get-together to thank all of their employees. The food, the traditional toasts and the recognition of the seniority of so many of our coworkers for their loyalty and years of service marked a very emotional and passionate ceremony.
