The upcoming opening of NickelodeonTM Resort Punta Cana and Sensatori Resort Punta Cana has been our company’s hottest news. We made a commitment to our stakeholders to have the Grand Opening in May, so we are exerting ourselves strenuously to accomplish that goal. This innovative concept will undoubtedly be the talk of the industry and will surely become a standard for other properties in the Caribbean. Our alliance with NickelodeonTM has already given Karisma Hotels & Resorts great media visibility. We have added to that impetus by stepping up our work with tour operators and travel agents, offering them better tools to promote our hotels. In December, during the 8th Sales and Marketing Forum & Gourmet Inclusive® Vacations Consultant Awards, we rewarded our key players, offering them greater incentives, and they were quite excited to hear about our new wedding packages. In the forum we also held the Corazón (Heart) Awards to acknowledge collaborators who delivered the best experience to our agents’ clients. Another great achievement this year was the release of television spots on the East Coast and the Midwest of the United States. As a deserved reward, these TV ads one for Azul Hotels and one for El Dorado Spa & Resorts - received the Travel Weekly Gold Magellan Award for “Best TV Commercial” in the Hospitality category. Even in the fast-moving communication environment in which we live, our Sales and Marketing team’s heroic efforts succeeded in making us stand out from the competition. So, we, the Operations team, want to support the Marketing group’s success by bringing to fruition the dream that led our guests to decide to put their vacations into our caring hands. It is a huge commitment, but we are confident that the Karisma Hotels & Resorts team is up to the challenge.

Karisma Hotels Adriatic

KARISMA HOTELS ADRIATIC

COUNTING OUR RI BY: ALEKSANDRA NENADIC

P

earls, Sapphires, Emeralds and Diamonds – A necklace of preserved nature, love for our natural surroundings, sustainable development for a sustainable life and a special kind of approach to hospitality. This is how we see Karisma Adriatic. The value of precious stones and gems is dependent on their condition - but if the conditions are worthy and noble – the order of value is recognizable immediately. For instance, a good sized pearl could take centuries to grow. There are many that are forced, and many get damaged, but still, immediately to a knowing eye the beauty, the rarity and the uniqueness is easily recognizable.

Such is the beauty of Dubrovnik – The Pearl of the Adriatic. And here we start to weave our very own precious necklace, with this most fairest of the European cities. But do not let the dazzle of the UNESCO World Heritage city take you away from the gemstones we are yet to cover. It is quite easy to bead this necklace further when you take the clearest and cleanest waters of Europe – the Adriatic Sea, specially protected and cared for amongst the miles of Croatian coastline and with over a dozen hundred islands! Croatia is one of the richest countries in Europe in terms of biodiversity. The crystal-clear sapphire waters of the Adriatic remain protected from the meandering pipelines of our modern age, and the proof is the dolphins which are found in abundance along the coast.

But even in these most amazing blue and turquoise waters there are those special sapphires that are most prized and with clearest transparency. Such are the waters of the carfree island of Kolocep, of the Elaphite Archipelago where our Kalamota Island Resort is located – with centuries’ old woods of pine and olive groves, and the location of best diving spots of the Adriatic. This prized royal blue sapphire brings us to the amazing color changing sapphire, the Makarska Riviera, a prized gem due to its purity and ability to change color from navy nearly black blue, to royal blue to turquoise – and you might have guessed it, that is the location of our Sensimar Adriatic Beach Resort and Sensimar Makarska. And while Kolocep Island across Dubrovnik has untouched nature and olive groves, our Makarska region is crowned with the Biokovo mountains, the majority of which is protected as a nature park – with hundreds of plant and animal species, some of which are endemic. Thus we come to the emerald, the protected and preserved nature, and the green and sustainable life Karisma promotes. Emerald is classified as generally poor with regards to toughness due to its resistance to breakage – such is our nature, and Karisma remains dedicated to our nature and the preservation of our surroundings.

Karisma Hotels Adriatic

ICHES

From the pearls - our settings, through to our emeralds which we vow to carefully protect, through to the second hardest gem of them all, sapphires-our waters, we come to our necklace’s crowning gem - the Diamond. Imagine this marvelous necklace without the diamond – such was hospitality in the region without Karisma Adriatic. Karisma Hotels Adriatic brought innovation, the first ever swim-up suites in the region, Karisma Adriatic brought biocosmetics to its guests, dedication to surroundings, betterment to the settlements and society, preservation of historical grounds

such as those where Kalamota Island Resort is located, and so much more – it brought the dazzle of the diamond and the touch that will make this necklace the most dazzling in all of Europe. All the while fairy dusted with gold sparkles from current and future awards and accolades. It is not by chance that we like to use a diamond, for it is a rare gem of rarity and comes from the Greek word ‘Adamas’ meaning invincible, which parallels to its quality – a perfect combination of criteria that distinguishes the stone above all others.

THE FLAVORS OF

KARISMA ADRIATIC

A

ngry Orange might sound as something fit for Nickelodeon Hotels and Resorts, and while we all remain ever excited over our progress in Punta Cana, it is the orange grandeur of another kind that spices our couples’ stays in Croatia. Bitter Orange, or as locals call it, “Angry Orange” has always adorned the gardens of Dubrovnik as an almost essential detail against the stone walls of the beautiful city and gloriettes of its summer residences. Its juicy fruit and leaves have continued to play a major role in the gastronomy of the region. Even to this day, people enjoy the bitter orange made according to the traditional recipes. Jam made of bitter orange combines tradition and the present time as an indigenous gastronomic consumption which contains the aroma and the taste of the Dubrovnik region. Our Food & Beverage teams do not stop there however, as promoting local tradition and cuisine is integral to the Karisma’s style. The olive oil squeezed from old olive trees along the coasts and on islands’ hills takes a special place on our resorts’ displays. Each spinach and cheese pie, forest mushroom risotto, grilled bass, Dalmatian prosciutto and Pag cheese platter mix, and majority of the local ingredients are carefully chosen for our menu dishes in all our restaurants – and they transcend across the abundance of produce Croatian mainland and waters bring us. These are carefully incorporated in the international and dedicated cuisines Karisma Adriatic offers. Our F&B Manager Dejan will probably jump into his car, put the volume up to a klapa song (klapa is a form of traditional a capella singing in Dalmatia that translates as ‘group of friends’ and whose

Karisma Hotels Adriatic

motifs celebrate love, wine, country and the sea) and search for the best ‘angry’ recipe in the Dubrovnik region. He will go on to negotiate with the neighbor who has kept the recipe a secret for generations to make homemade jam in quantities that can cater to our hotels, and will at the same time send his chef to hand-pick the freshest octopus the local fishermen brought to the market that morning. And what does a perfect dish ask for, but a carefully selected wine? It is no surprise that our wine menu had 11 drafts before final approval, as we wanted to make sure wines such as autochthonous Malvazija (from the very best wine cellar) was there as well. And then our F&B Assistant will come over with his 40 years’ experience of

working for the best in the region and display his knowledge of spices used and where you can buy the best to take home with you. If our guests are lucky, and it is a good sunny day, our chef will explain how lamb cutlets are cooked and point out to our guest the grasslands amongst pine-tree hills where the lamb grazed. But it is not only the taste and flavor we are after. It is the natural ingredient, promotion of local cuisine and small businesses that Karisma Adriatic is after. With a smile. Is that not a perfect recipe for success?

THE GRILL

OPENS ITS DOORS AT

ALLURE AROMA MOCAWA HOTEL, BY KARISMA

O

n February 18th, we opened the The Grill - Parilla de Sabores (Flavor Grill) restaurant to guests and the general public at Allure Aroma Mocawa Hotel, by Karisma. This is actually the first international restaurant in all of Armenia, Colombia. Carlos Andrés Plata, General Manager of Allure Aroma Mocawa described the cuisine they offer in the online journal Crónica del Quindío (Quindío Chronicle): “The grill is our main feature, hence the restaurant’s name. We offer a variety of dishes whose magnificent flavors will utterly delight diners. The menu was created as a joint effort between the chefs at Karisma Mexico and the Quindío cuisine experts, aiming at highlighting the richness of the Colombian dining experience, that is, melding international dishes with those typical of the region.” The Grill – Parrilla de Sabores, offers up a succulent salmon in passion fruit sauce and a variety of local aged meats, with subtle, yet robust flavors. And you won’t want to pass up the lovely local paisa tray or the traditional mondongo (tripe dish). Mr. Plata highlighted the social benefit of opening this restaurant here, noting that employees are all from this Quindío region. “They are people who are already very skilled so all we have to do is train them in our own standards of world class hotel practices.” He also indicated that their suppliers are small and medium entrepreneurs from that same area, so the company makes an important contribution to the development of the Quindío region while still maintaining a sustainable management style, which is a key factor for all of Karisma’s Hotels & Resorts.

EL DORADO ROYALE GUINNESS WORLD RECORD FOR THE LARGEST GINGERBREAD VILLAGE

E

l Dorado Royale, a Spa Resort, by Karisma broke the Guinness World record for the largest Gingerbread Village in the world! The author of this project was Chef Pascal Demory, who has over 30 years of experience, and is celebrated for his dedication and passion for pastries.

The gingerbread village was inspired by the architectural and urban history of the Yucatan peninsula region of Mexico, covering the periods of the Spanish Conquest, the Porfiriato and the Mexican Revolution, and reaching down through to our own modern times.

The 82m2 (882 ft 2) mock-up was made up of 113 buildings, divided into 27 blocks and is organized hierarchically throughout, with schools, houses, a market, a church, plazas, a city hall, a train station, a grocery store and a cemetery. There is even a section devoted to the Chichen Itzá archeological site. The award was presented by a Guinness World Records judge to Chef Demory, as well as to Mr. Beat Müller, General Manager of El Dorado Royale, and Mr. Jeroen Hanlo, Vice President of Food and Beverages of Karisma Hotels & Resorts. This record could only have been achieved through the incredibly hard work of Chef Pascal Demory and his team, who dedicated not only their time, but mind and heart to the project, overcoming all possible obstacles in achieving this majestic gingerbread village, exhibited in the lobby of El Dorado Royale. The village was later donated to the community action group “Fundación Ciudad de la Alegría” (City of Joy Foundation) in Cancún.

THE CHALLENGE OF INTEGRATING TWO EXACTING BRANDS BY: MARIO MATHIEU

K

arisma Hotels & Resorts is building two complexes in a new destination, Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. This new project represents a major challenge for the company because it integrates two brands with a focus on customers of different ages and tastes. One of these brands is Nickelodeon™ Hotels & Resorts Punta Cana, which is the first international hotel for NickelodeonTM, and also Karisma’s first thematic property. This association and the development of this fun and dynamic concept has launched us into another level of creativity and challenges which will raise the standard for family vacations. The Gourmet Village or ‘Pueblito Gourmet’ will combine various restaurants, bars and recreational areas into one spot, and this idea will represent a new business model we intend to replicate in the future. We are sure it will be a great attraction not only for international visitors but also for Dominican travelers who are looking for something different in the region to enjoy fun-filled days with their families, and they will discover that in every corner of this property. This project has already caught the attention of our future guests, as well as the interest of those involved in the company, as it has been quite a novel and challenging development. Then we have Sensatori Resort Punta Cana, which is the result of the excellent relationship with German tour operator TUI and Karisma Hotels & Resorts’ experience.

This is an important alliance that seeks to accommodate the discerning traveler of all ages with our well-known high standards of service, quality, comfort and luxury. The entire project is a 92 million U.S. dollar investment that will generate about 1,500 jobs in the construction phase and then approximately 1,200 direct and 700 indirect jobs once inaugurated. It has only been possible to bring this all to fruition thanks to Karisma’s wealth of experience and because of the talented people we have working for our company, while shoring that up with the Dominican history and roots that our company brings to the table. We will open this complex in May; it will be a genuine pioneer, a leader in this destination, turning out to be one of the many successes our chain will have in the Dominican Republic.

RIBBON-CUTTING CEREMONY AT THE BRAND NEW

isualize the scene: The sales team rushing up and down the stairs, in and out of the rooms, vividly describing every detail of the décor, infrastructure, style and services of this building that will house 192 suites, 5 pools, 10 restaurants and the largest Spa in the Riviera Maya. Sales agents looking around curiously, asking questions, taking pictures, some taking notes: “... all rooms are Ocean Front, two categories: Infinity Pool and Swim Up suites ...”

Mexican Dance show that took place just before the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony.

Outside, Mr. Martínez, protected from the bright sun by his cap, directs guests to their golf carts and then guides golf carts back in their way to the lobby, orchestrating some pretty complex maneuvers, without running over those who were still in line for their tour.

Mr. Martinez expressed his pleasure in being able to offer this new creation to delight our guests, and a priest offered a blessing upon this beautiful property afterwards. Scissors cut the emblematic ribbon, which then fluttered in the gentle wind, opening the way into the extraordinary premises. After all the hugging and joyousness, everyone went on to enjoy dinner in one of the new restaurants: Klay Talay, Chef Market or Mia Italia. It was a very tough choice, as they all stood, dazzled by the beauty, the originality and the intimate ambiance of each of these locations.

Meanwhile, in the lobby, dozens of expectant smiling faces, raised a glass and toasted their friends. The travel agents, who were participating in the 8th Sales and Marketing Forum & Gourmet Inclusive Vacations Consultant Awards, rated the beauty of this new building, and thoroughly enjoyed the

BENEFITS OF

AYURVEDA THERAPY BY: GRECIA LÓPEZ

T

raditional medicine has played an important role in different cultures throughout the world. This comes from a collection of healing practices that combine knowledge and skill, but rely on an ancestral theory of belief that aids in diagnosing, preventing, and treating diseases, both mental and physical. The use of these medical alternatives has increased in the past 20 years in Latin America and in the rest of the world, being a potential alternative in understanding and treating health. One of these many examples of traditional medicine is found in the “Ayurveda”, an ancient Sanskrit term meaning “lifeknowledge”. It is based on the theory that the five elements of the workings of the universe: water, fire, air, earth and space, are related to the elements of the human body: plasma, blood, flesh, fat, bone, bone marrow and other fluids. Ayurvedic therapy has been considered a form of medicine in India, the rest of Asia and the Western world, where several of its techniques, such as the use of herbs, massage and yoga postures are common. This therapy plays a significant role in the purification and maintenance of bodily health. The process, which helps produce inspiration and enjoyment, goes on to aid the stimulation of the body’s internal organs to process protein, generate chemical enzymes and convert sugar into glucose. At Vassa Spa we offer massages inspired by this powerful ancestral technique that keeps health tuned up by helping the body to circulate nutrients effectively and eliminate toxins. If this type of massage is adopted as a daily practice it can even help rejuvenate the body.

OUR ALLIANCES GROW

T O P R E S E R V E O U R D E S T I N AT I O N S BY: DAVID ORTEGÓN

E

arly on in 2012, Karisma Hotels & Resorts entered into a strategic alliance with Flora, Fauna y Cultura de México (Flora, Fauna and Culture of Mexico) and The Travel Foundation to develop a program for Sea Turtle Protection in our Riviera Maya properties. As a result of this program, we have managed to protect a total of 1,324 White and Loggerhead turtle nests, equivalent to a total of 59,713 baby turtles released at our properties over the past 4 years. In 2015 alone we achieved the successful release of 15,428 small hatchlings! This contributed directly to the conservation of these iconic species of the Mexican Caribbean, and thus to the preservation of Meso-American Reef, one of the foremost natural attractions of the Mayan Riviera. Beginning in 2015, we strengthened this program by including a new strategic partner, the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana (Bogotá, Colombia). They support us by sending us students from their Faculty of Environmental & Rural Studies (Facultad de Estudios Ambientales y Rurales) to work with us. This will allow our Conservation program to also become a formal training ground for research and academic studies, thereby allowing us to learn even more about the ecosystem of these species in our own state of Quintana Roo, Mexico as well as throughout the Caribbean. We can then pass this knowledge on to other regions of Latin America. Adoptions and donations save lives Our effort in the conservation of these species is not limited to establishing camps to protect nests on our own hotel properties. We have also created a sea turtle adoption program for guests and employees, so that, through donations, we can support the conservation of sea turtles on the beaches in Flora and Fauna Sanctuaries in Xcacel and Xcacelito in Quintana Roo. For every 25 Mexican Pesos donated in this program, we save one more baby turtle and we help sponsor the work of Flora, Fauna and Culture of Mexico at the most important beaches in the state of Quintana Roo.

Sustainability

Please share this information with your family, your colleagues and our guests! Invite them to join our campaign for the Conservation of Sea Turtles, by abiding by the following guidelines:

Turtle-Tips for Our Sea Turtle Conservation Do not eat turtle eggs or buy anything made with their body parts, remember that they are a species protected by the Mexican Federal Government. Turtles and other marine animals easily mistake trash for food. “Do not throw garbage into the ocean or on the beach.” Please avoid lights and campfires on the beach, they frighten sea turtles, and “Do not use a flash when taking pictures of them”. Beach chairs, kayaks and other objects on the beach limit space for nesting turtles “Remove them at night so that the turtles can get by.” Turtles are easily frightened, so if you find one, don’t touch it, just turn around and leave it alone. When leaving their nest, hatchlings are guided to the sea by natural light, if you see a lost one, notify your Security Department, so that they can lead it safely to the water. If you are playing any beach sports, “Please watch your step and avoid nesting areas so you don’t destroy them”. Participate in beach cleanup campaigns hosted by your hotel or your community. Take part in our turtle adoption program or make a donation in one of our collection boxes. To learn more about our program, or if you have any new ideas that you would like to contribute in protecting marine life, please get in touch with the Sustainability Coordinator in your hotel, and attend one of our training sessions.

Information technology

WHAT ARE “BEACONS”?

N

ow our guests can enjoy the Karisma Gourmet Inclusive ® Experience more fully, thanks to the latest technological trend in hospitality: BEACONS.

These small beetle-shaped devices send Bluetooth signals to our guests’ mobile devices, informing them of our products and services, promotions or preferential prices. They are placed at specific points in our properties such as the lobby, spas, restaurants, common areas, bars and gazebos. For our guests to enjoy this service, all they have to do is download the Karisma Mobile app and activate the Bluetooth service on their mobile devices. Then, messages and additional information can be push-transferred when a BEACON detects it.

The messages vary, depending on the location of each BEACON, and can range from 2 for 1 drink promotions, discounts on massages and treatments, specials on bottles of wine and reduced prices on dining packages. SENSIMAR Seaside Suites and the Hidden Beach Resort, Au Naturel Club, by Karisma were the first hotels to implement the use of these devices during the month of December 2015. Due to the success of the program in its very first month, and the tremendous response from our guests, we now have 75 BEACONS active in three hotels: there are 40 in El Dorado Seaside Suites, 20 in El Dorado Royale and El Dorado Casitas Royale, and 15 more at Azul Beach Hotel, by Karisma.

Human Resources

“EPIC

FOR A CULTURE OF

GROWTH AND RECOGNITION

What is EPIC? EPIC is the acronym for Employee Perceived Image of the Company. It is a tool that will allow you to allow you to express your personal view of the company, your supervisors, co-workers and everyone you interact with daily. There are five qualifying factors: Credibility, Respect, Equality, Identity and Camaraderie.

Benefits Every week you participate you can win badges and earn points that can be redeemed for prizes and perks, but more importantly, each week you have the opportunity to acknowledge others, and be acknowledged by your peers at work.

WE WANT TO NURTURE A CULTURE OF GROWTH AND RECOGNITION WHERE WE ALL COME HAPPY TO WORK! What is it for? On a personal basis, EPIC will allow you to understand how others view you and how you can improve on that perception, as it provides useful tips in each category. On a team level it allows you to recognize the work done by others by giving them badges and trophies. On an organizational level, it allows the Human Resources department to anonymously measure the overall perception we have of our company or hotel, so that we can identify what measures and actions to implement in order to become one of the best places to work in the hospitality industry. How does it work? Since it is an on-line software program, it is designed to be reached from a link that you will receive by e-mail every week. You only have to answer seven simple questions each week, and evaluate and/or acknowledge people with whom you interact daily.

Life at Karisma

LIFE AT KARISMA

THE STORY OF ALEJANDRO CASARRUBIAS MOCTEZUMA Waiter at El Dorado Casitas Royale

I

’m originally from Acapulco. I arrived in Cancún 14 years ago, looking for work. I wasn’t able to find a job at the airport or in the Hotel Zone, and I knocked on many doors without finding my niche. I had never worked in the hospitality industry. After three failed attempts, I was finally accepted by Fiesta Americana Grand Coral Beach and stayed there for 6 years, starting off as a Security Guard. In 2009 I landed at Gran Velas Riviera Maya and then, in 2010 I discovered Karisma when I started to work at Azul Beach, and there, I became part of the family. I learned about El Dorado Royale through a friend, she was working as ‘order taker’. I still recall her name, Abraxa Pérez. She was the one who told me all about the resort, and what it really means to be part of a company like Karisma. It was time for a change, and I was ready to move to a larger resort.

It was a huge challenge, but not unfamiliar to me, and I am very thankful for the years of growth at this company. My philosophy is very easy and simple: For me, every day is a different one, and there is always something new to learn and improve upon. I am focused on what I do, and I try not to get distracted. It is a wonderful environment to work in, being surrounded by nature as I am. My greatest satisfaction is to get a ‘Hello’ or a smile from guests who recognize me. El Dorado Royale has given me a lot, so I give all I have in everything I do. Engaging myself on the job is more satisfying even than picking up my paycheck and I am sure my paycheck and I am sure you all know how I feel…Doing my best without expecting anything in return, that’s my real passion! Cheers!
