very year, Karisma Hotels & Resorts buys out time to honor and recognize our top professionals in the Gourmet Inclusive® Vacation Consultant Sales and Marketing Forum Award program. This year, El Dorado Royale A Spa Resort, by Karisma was our gracious host and over 550 Gourmet Inclusive® Vacation Consultants from different parts of the world participated. They recounted what the fundamental keys have been to generate the successes they achieved thanks to the loyalty and dedication of our associate travel agents. Anne Rupenstein’s item in Press Today reported that along with spectacular evenings like “Alice in Wonderland”, the new educational program was launched at El Dorado Royale.
In speaking to our friends the travel agents, suppliers, members and clients, Marilyn Cario - Director of Retail Sales North America for Karisma Hotels & Resorts - admonished all present to think of what they can do to excel and leave their personal mark on their work and the people with whom they interact. “The theme of this event is ‘Always Leave your Mark’, as this is the mind focus that we would like all of you to have, because you are our main representatives. You are leaving your mark somewhere” she said, “Folks will never forget how you made them feel.” Donnie Dawson, Deputy Director of Tourism, Sales – USA and Latin America for the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) emphasized that travel agents continue to be very important, especially for destinations where Karisma Hotels & Resorts has a strong presence. “Travel agents will not go anywhere," he said. "They're just becoming bigger and stronger." To show its commitment to this type of economic source, Dawson said that 80% of JTB's annual budget is aimed at engaging travel agents and their collaborators throughout Canada and the United States. With great emotion and a blast of glitter, Karisma introduced their top sellers in the Travel Agency sector at this banquet, in true Karisma form. The company was proud to welcome all these valuable partners at this eleventh annual Gourmet Inclusive® Vacation Consultant Awards event.

XOLUMADO
INSPIRATION VILLAGE, BY KARISMA
IS INAUGURATED
O
n December 4th, 2018, the inauguration of Xolumado, an Inspiration Village by Karisma was held, where a cocktail party and dinner was for our guests and members of the press.
Xolumado is a place where a great diversity of trees, herbs and plants emerge that offer infinite forms, colors and scents to the environment, generating an atmosphere of mysticism and relaxation. These same elements were the source of inspiration for the creation of the menus. The dishes that were prepared were the result of an eclectic mixture of traditional Mexican ingredients such as mole, pipián, huitlacoche and chaya along with avant-garde techniques which resulted in delicious, colorful and lush dishes, just as Xolumado itself is. Using this same concept, the drinks menu presented cocktails based on tequila or mezcal, using smoke mist techniques, emulating the mist that forms among the flora of the gardens. This offering uses other mixology techniques, craft beers and Mexican wines, emphasizing - of course - wines from El Cielo Vineyard.

T
ur RedKnife Restaurant, part of the Allure Chocolat experience, developed a new menu offering. Diminishing the number of offerings, creating an interesting fusion of the Steakhouse concept with local products and preparations, then complementing it all with a fresh dessert offering, has generated a real stir among diners who have been enjoying these wonderful dishes from recipes we are extremely proud of.
he Code is an initiative led by the private sector to promote responsible, regulated and safe tourism. Our hotels in Colombia have decided to assume this code and, in turn, the responsibility to continue fulfilling its requirements. Following an annual audit, Allure Chocolat, Allure Bonbon and Allure Caramel received certification in December, 2018.
For our restaurant San Lázaro -located in the Allure Canela hotela menu was elaborated that would give a Caribbean identity to the ancestral flavors of the area. Toying with these concepts, some typical dishes such as the Colombian cheese soup (mote de queso), the seafood casserole, ceviches, and some other preparations were created with typical yet novel touches.

SUSTAINABILITY
PA SSIO N F OR
SUSTAINABILITY: ACTION TODAY TO PRESERVE TOMORROW We constantly hear the term Sustainability day in and day out and that is because it is one of Karisma’s most important foundation pillars for our development. But ‘what is Sustainability?’ The modern concept that most of the world uses is that Sustainable Development is one that “satisfies the needs of the current generation without compromising the ability for future generations to satisfy their own needs.” In other words, our actions today, in terms of consumption, production and development, must foresee the future repercussions and minimize the impact that our actions can have. In so doing, we will be aware, and our actions can be taken with full consciousness of their effect on the natural resources and ecosystems that guarantee our wellbeing and an adequate quality of life.
Having said all this, it becomes extremely important to contribute to sustainability since our very existence depends on our protecting natural resources and contributing to the development of the community. What is our part at Karisma? Karisma has been one of the pioneers in adopting the Sustainability model and integrating it into the company's philosophy. This means that every development project has as a fundamental pillar, being the vision of optimizing resources with the least possible impact on daily operations.
The concept was coined in 1983 when The United Nations (UN) created the Commission on Environment and Development. The team that made up this commission created a report called "Our Common Future", proposing that society should modify lifestyles and habits in order to avoid a social crisis and the degradation of nature.
Some examples of campaigns that we carry out constantly are the protection of sea turtles, the creation of greenhouses and vegetable gardens, the efficient consumption of water and energy, employee training, and strategic alliances for the benefit of Society in general, Karisma Foundation and its work to improve the quality of life through health care, and many other initiatives - Because when we talk about the environment, we are not only talking about natural resources but we also want to affect the people and the community that surrounds us.
What is Sustainable Tourism, and why is it important? Tourism is a fundamental activity that generates income, jobs and development of the region. Within the Services Activities Economy, the tourism industry is one of the most important sectors in the global economy, one of the most dynamic sectors and one that depends specifically on the conservation in the environment that it is found.
Therefore, in order to live harmoniously and generate positive impacts, Karisma joined this Manifesto of Sustainable Tourism, with the objective of collaborating and working together with the government, the destinations we serve and the communities therein to maintain resources of the tourist destinations in which we operate, in order to be able to maintain them and to be successful in them for many more years.

KARISMA RECYCLATHON, “THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR NOT RECYCLING”
O
ne of the foremost environmental problems on our planet is the excess of garbage we produce. According to UN estimates, by 2030 there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean, so it is crucially urgent to implement aggressive actions that reduce and eliminate this residual waste! That is why Karisma, conscious of the fact that recycling often is complicated, has established a Recyclathon project in Mexico hotels. How can I participate? It is easy: 1. Establish a separation plan for household waste and involve your whole family 2. Separate PET containers, hard plastic, aluminum and tin cans and glass bottles and containers. Wash them and let them dry. Once clean and dry put them in separate bags. 3. Bond paper from magazines and journals, as well as clean and dry cardboard can be tied up with twine. 4. Vegetable oil from your kitchen can be stored in a PET container with a leak-proof, screw-on lid. 5. Collect batteries, and intact light bulbs that are no longer used and store them in a clean and dry container. 6. Collect clothing that is no longer used and that is in good shape, so as to donate to those in need. 7. On the set date, take your recyclables to the hotel, so we can make sure they are sent out to recycle 8. Receive a sustainable price for your participation!

PLANET HOUR Every year, on the last Saturday in March, at 8:30 pm local time, the whole world goes dark for one hour… This simple act of shutting off lights is a global initiative that began in Sidney, Australia in 2007, seeking to generate a awareness of the global environmental crisis. This initiative, promoted by the WWF (World Wildlife Fund), and now, 12 years since inception, and 11 years as a global initiative, it is accepted in 188 countries. In 26 countries, #EarthHour and #Connect2Earth hashtags have become a rallying cry, generating around 2 billion comments, where individuals proclaimed publicly their commitment to the planet and the actions they plan to take. Via the www.EarthHour.org portal, anyone can call on world governments to take actionable and urgent means to reduce climate change and environmental degradation. You can add your own voice and make a difference. We leave you with some suggestions for change in your lifestyles that may seem small but have a significant impact. 1. Change your lifestyle: Eat less meat, lean toward local fresh produce, and choose clean and sustainable operations.
2. Choose renewable energy sources: If you are remodeling your home, invest in solar panels or wind turbines; your savings will help pay for it. If you purchase a car, choose hybrid or electric. 3. Restore nature where you live: Organize family/friends/ neighbor clean-up days where all can participate in cleaning up a public place that has trash strewn about. You can share your photos on #BasuraChallenge. 4. Change your buying patterns: Say NO to any type of single-use plastic (disposables), take your own cloth or reusable grocery bags. Use thermoses, reusable plates, glass, steel or porcelain containers, stainless steel cutlery and reusable stainless steel drinking straws when buying take-out food or on picnics. 5. Use less water: In our hotels, please REPORT LEAKS! At home, reduce shower time by one minute and shut the water off while lathering up, or when brushing your teeth. Maybe you think the impact that you, by yourself, is tiny… but if we are many who take these actions, the result will be significant, and we will be able to enact changes.. You can do it!

IF IT’S ON, AND NO ONE IS USING IT,
‘TURN IT OFF!’ A
ccording to official data, if we continue using electric power as we have been, in a few years we will lose natural resources. We are becoming more and more populous and we are consuming more and more energy, mostly produced with fossil fuels that generate Carbon Dioxide, which contributes to climate change and its devastating effects. We must not forget that we are already facing the impacts of climate change in the form of hurricanes, heat waves, torrential rains and sargassum and other natural disasters. That being said, we invite you to join the "Turn it off!" movement, and look around your work area carefully for energy thieves and get rid of them. Here are some ideas: 1. Turn lights off if not being used, or turn them off during the day, and open window coverings to let in natural light. Even an energy-saving light bulb, left on all day consumes the equivalent of charging 974 cellular phones in a month. 2. Remember that per company policy, office air conditioners are to be set at 24°C (75°F), please ensure this is happening. If no one is in the conditioned zone, “Turn it off!” A small air conditioner left on all day uses as much energy as a car driving 3,600 km (2,237 miles).
3. If you are in the laundry department make sure you fill washers and dryers to their specified capacity, do not waste water, gas and electricity to wash just a few clothes. 4. Turn your computer monitor off when leaving your work station. A single monitor that stays on all day consumes in one month the same electricity as charging 22,723 cell phones. Apply these suggestions in all areas of your hotel but also at your own home! Energy costs money, but wasting it costs us much more!

SARGASSUM IN THE CARIBBEAN
S
argassum is a brown macroalgae that normally grows in open waters, in the form of floating islands in the middle of the sea, which move with the currents. Under normal conditions, sargassum is an oasis for tiny marine animals, as it provides protection against predators, as well as food and shelter. In the Atlantic Ocean there are two large areas of sargassum accumulation, one in the northern Atlantic, of which there are reports that date back centuries; one of recent formations is in the southern part, off the coast of Brazil. This latest island of sargassum, which is presumed to have been created by overuse of fertilizers and agrochemicals that are carried from agricultural lands to the open sea by rivers, and this is what is generating the mass arrivals on our beaches. The arrival of sargassum in such quantities to our beaches has a very high impact on the ecosystem, as, upon arrival decomposes
ISS U U.CO M /K ARIS MA-MX
and releases organic and chemical matter, depleting the oxygen from the water and affecting areas where corals, sea grasses, fish and other animals die asphyxiated. Sargassum on the beaches also affects the sea turtle nesting process, because when it decomposes, this seaweed generates heat, in effect, "cooking" the turtle eggs that are hatching in their nests on these beaches. Additionally, the impact on the tourist industry, one of our main assets, is very high because it generates an ugly image and unpleasant smells. Although this phenomenon is already being addressed by all levels of government, companies, universities and conservation organizations, it is necessary that each of us, as inhabitants of the Caribbean and as part of this company, help in the cleaning work and collection of sargassum, to try and keep our destination as good as possible. It's time for us to act like a united team, like the great family we are.

OBESITY AS A DISEASE I
KARISMA

t's all over the radio, television, newspapers and digital media: The overweight and obese population is of great concern for government agencies. Some may presume that this is a very personal matter or choice; however, it’s the way that most people live that always seems to influence the rest, when living in close community with each other, as we do here in Mexico. Obesity is a chronic multifactorial disorder, stemming from various genetic and environmental determinants, characterized by increased adipose tissue. In Mexico, approximately 72.5% of the population over 20 years of age is overweight or obese1, both in the rural and urban areas of our country. This number is increasing every year, and this is worrisome since obesity is a disease that invariably leads to other chronic degenerative diseases. Obesity and excessive weight are the main risk factor in disabilities and death, not to mention diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and bone and muscle disorders. So, not only is it a personal matter, as some may think, but it is reflected in the mortality rate and the cost of medical treatments and government medical services.
The Mexican Diabetes Federation (Federación Mexicana de Diabetes) provides these nutritional recommendations: • Physical activity at least 30 minutes per day • Reduce sugar and fat consumption • Avoid alcohol consumption • Keep regular meal times • Avoid prolonged fasting and binge eating • Increase plain water consumption • Serve meals on smaller plates, to avoid eating large portions

The Gift of Hearing T
he importance of the five senses may go unnoticed in our daily lives. For many, the lack of any one of them implies losing the opportunity to know others, to make less mistakes, to socialize and to coexist with their loved ones. In other cases it means losing the opportunity to have better professional or academic development. Hearing loss can be attributed to genetics, complications in childbirth, infectious diseases, chronic exposure to noise, the use of certain drugs or it may simply be a matter of the passage of time and aging. This condition causes other psycho-social problems such as depression, isolation and low self-esteem. There are 466 million people in the world who suffer from hearing loss, 34 million of whom are children. Aware of the importance of this sense, we have managed a campaign for three years for the donation of high quality hearing aids. In 2018, in partnership with the company PHONAK, we were able to double the number of donated equipment, thus being able to help them out with 79 hearing devices. Behind each beneficiary lay the most beautiful testimonies, which motivate us to continue with our work and that impel us to continue increasing the scope of our Foundation.
Our passion is‌ to help!
The efforts of each of our campaigns would not be possible without the confidence of each one of you has in us: Thank you!

Karisma Foundation - Giving Day
120 Pantry Packs were delivered to the employees! Each pantry basket included a bottle of cider as a Happy Holiday gift wish.
Each year, based on the "Giving Tuesday" or a "Day to Give" banner, thousands of organizations, companies and citizens come together for the simple purpose of serving others. This year, FundaciĂłn Karisma, coordinated, in November 2018, a series of volunteer activities where collaborators from different areas could participate.
Karisma Foundation - Health Day As with every month, we have the Karisma Mobile Unit visiting our offices. On this occasion, general examinations were held for all collaborators in CancĂşn. Let's continue promoting good nutrition and a better quality of life.
We were accompanying elderly people from the Nohoch Nah home, entertaining the children of the temporary assistance home and a mega-health day was held where, with the support of our mobile medical unit, many people were able to get medical examinations.
National Costume Contest - Halloween Exotic Contest Without a doubt, the most anticipated activities by our creative collaborators are the costume contests, since each year they are more and more ingenious and surprising! The jurors were our partners and chose the most fun and original costumes. Winners got to take home cash prizes for their great efforts.

Donation of Exotic toys
Our staff got a big surprise when we took them to an afternoon of relaxation in our spas.
Once a year, the Exotic sales rooms come together for a good cause: the donation of toys for various communities.
They were welcomed with snacks and a cocktail and then had a manicure and personal grooming session. This was one way of recognizing the great work they do daily.
On this occasion, our director of Sales, Phil Woodward, disguised himself as Santa Claus to make the delivery of toys to the utter delight of so many children.
Sustainability Month In October we celebrate Sustainability. Hotels and KTC, joined in this campaign where they participated in different activities in favor of sustainability: ·· "Beach Cleaning" at the Dorado Hotels ·· "Operación Hormiga" (“Operation Ant” = “Beehive of Activity”) in ABR ·· "Sustainability program Talks" ·· "Crafts with recycled materials in the Kids Club ·· Sustainability talks and distribution of triptychs ·· No more disposables

At Karisma we have programs that care for and promote sustainability in all our hotels, however, we are rarely truly active participants. That is why, at Exotic & Prestige Travelers, we have decided to begin to do our part, by inviting everyone to be part of the permanent campaign, "No more disposables" in which all employees are invited to bring to work their favorite thermos bottles or cups to avoid the continuous waste of plastic or cardboard cups.
