“The Other”

1st International Photo based Mail Art Exhibition

THESSALONIKI 2014 TeeToTuM Photography Center of Thessaloniki (www.fkth.gr)

In art the image of people (as units or groups) in the self portrait has a timeless value as it does in our conscience. We always identify ourselves in connection to others, the conception of self results to a certain degree, in accordance to others, we function in reference to them. Does all this really apply in reality and to what extent? Does it essentially matter or not? The ''Photography Center Îżf Thessaloniki'' and the visual artist group ''TeeToTum'', ''others'' in connection and in complete co-operation, try and are tested organizing the ''First International Photo -based Mail Art'' exhibition inviting artists to visualize ''the other'' based on photography. At the same time the participants, actually ''others'' themselves, use the medium of photography either in a more innovative manner or in more conventional forms to create imagery. Having decided that the earnings of the exhibition will be given in support of the ''Social medical clinic of solidarity'' which for a number of years has eliminated the meaning of ''the other'' in the current greek living condition, may be the reason for the number and quality of the participating works. Because finally ''the other'' is: the friend, the co-worker, the lover, the one walking along with you, the one with the same ideas, the colleague, the neighbor, the roommate, the relative, the enemy, the adversary, the hated, the marginal, the devian, the poor, the rich, the educated, the uneducated, the worker, the unemployed, the immigrant, the fellow countryman, the legal, the illegal, the man, the woman, the different, the same, the one who agrees and the one who doesn't, the faithful, the unfaithful. He, whom I see, he, whom I imagine and he who is. Me and my other self.
