Âťcontents

The projects enclosed in the portfolio aim to show my progress and development as an architecture student. Despite being conceived in different countries, under the supervision of different professors, it is still possible to extract the common values of the designs and the design process.

»about me My approach to architecture is based, above all, on rationality and personal experience. It has been influenced by three different countries, where I’ve studied. From Poland I’ve learnt practical and functional thinking. In Spain, I was taught to put great care into designed details, whereas in France my focus was driven towards the respect for the historic heritage. Thanks to these experiences, I am able to see from different perspectives and propose the best solutions. What is more, I have a great memory where I cherish all the travel pictures and thoughts and from which, most probably, comes all the inspiration I find. The key moment of my development as an architect was when I started to work in one of the most renowned Polish practices - Maćków Pracownia Projektowa. It was when working on executive drawings of the building “Green Day” in Wrocław, that I fully understood the role of an architect in the building process.

« back 6

I could finally see the drawing take real shape and be a key reference for engineers and builders. I was responsible for various tasks: from detailed CAD drawings, through the accordance of all fittings with architecture to finding finishing materials and ordering their samples. Continuing studies after being already professionally involved has added another value to my designs - I’ve become more aware of their possible realisation, the economic impact and accordance with building law. I perfectly understand that to become an architect is a life-long learning process. Though, being an eager learner and having lived through different experiences already, I consider myself most prepared for this journey.

BArch Diploma The location of the project was chosen after analysing the weather conditions and available accomodation in the eastern part of Bieszczady Mountains. The chosen trail from Ustrzyki Górne to Wołosate was too long to cross in just one day and there was no shelter to stay overnight. The shelter answers just the backpacker’s needs and what’s more, it is much more comfortable than a traditional tent.

The idea behind the interior was to create a fully flexible space, which one could adapt to his own needs. To archieve that goal, the inner-space was adopted to the use of special hammocks for sleeping and sitting and if not needed, they could be hidden in a wall. The inspiration behind both form and function of the building was lightness and transparency, which determined the use of light and see-through elements in the interior. They should allow unlimited sense of the surrounding landscape as well as an opportunity to arrange freely the inner-space.

Approach: to reinterpret a baroque theatre, by the means of contemporary language. Having decided that the audience is the part and parcel of a theatre, it has thus become a key element to sculpt the volume of the building.

The triangle undercut is meant to emphasize the entrance; make it characteristic, distinctive and easily found. The second most important element is the foyer, which carries very important social and exhibition functions. The uncommon about this particular foyer is the fact that it is not limited to just one room but consists of a sequence of impressions, creating a whole parcours through the building.

This architectural promenade is formed by: ▫ the ceiling above the entrance, lit up with star-like lights; ▫ the low and dark vestibule which opens up to the three-storeyhigh, bright cafeteria space; ▫ and finally the glazed opening towards the green square.

As for the function, the building is divided into two main parts public and actors’. Because of the significant volume of the auditorium hall in comparison to the total volume, the auxiliary functions had to be clustered around it in order to maximise the efficient use of space.

31

The former splendour of the theatres’ interiors is now expressed by the simplicity and the void surrounding the spectator.

A visitor’s centre to the legendary site of the Camelot’s castle. Hidden in the ground. The one thing, which was clear for us from the very beginning was that the site should remain possibly untouched. It shall serve for the future generations as a true proof of what it has been before and therefore the construction has been completely hidden under the ground.

The aim of the structure is to create a medieval atmosphere around the site and through this sensation introduce the visitor to the legend of the castle. The long corridor and the dark exhibition rooms are an alegory of what we know as a medieval castle. The use of the stone as a wall cladding is an interpretation of the original castle’s walls.

The once densely and beautifully built XXth residential buildings, the isle of Kępa Mieszczańska started deteriorating, suffering from the destructions after the Second World War.

The aim of the project was to requalify the existing, postwar landscape by providing a new urban concept, that would bring the life back to Kępa Mieszczańska and turn it towards the surrounding river Odra. The southbanks of the isle, facing Wrocław’s Arsenal buildings are a natural location for a picturesque promenade that would continue on the isles all around the Old Town, offering both inhabitants and tourists a peaceful and pleasant parcour and a new perspective to admire the city.

ÂťPORTFOLIO

The given plot was located in the ancient centre of Valencia. It had an irregular shape and it was exceptionally big as for the plots in the neighbourhood - its area was approx. 500 m2.

56

/Karolina Obuszko

57

»PORTFOLIO

58

/Karolina Obuszko

The main idea was to divide the building in two volumes: residential - retreated, and the atelier - aligned to the street.

Thanks to this decision and to the area of the plot it was possible to create a large patio which allows for the separation of the work area from the rest area.

59

ÂťPORTFOLIO

The timber used to cover the front façade reffers to wooden elements present in the neighbourhood: the doors and shades. On the one hand the wooden cladding provides shadow for the atelier and on the other it allows to maintain the contact with the street.

60

/Karolina Obuszko

The key element of the entrance is the porch with its variety of door configurations which allow to modify the ambience - from the most closed and private to completely open and inviting - depending on the current needs.

61

The spacing between the wooden planks invites a passer-by to peak inside.

The task:

◦ only 50% of the plot is constructible ◦ at least 25% of the 50% free ground should be vegetated ◦ the ratio of the total usable area constructed to the total area of the plot: 3:1 ◦ the programme: 50% housing, 50% other: commercial, services, offices

/Karolina Obuszko

The answer: two volumes connected with an open staircase - a super space!

67

»PORTFOLIO

The public square is a sheltered observatory to the neighbouring park and passers-by.

The two volumes stand for the division of the programme - one volume dedicated to housing, the other to various functions. The division derives from the plot’s dimensions, location - three blind walls - and the analysis of the sun’s shading. The enclosed space between the buildings is a public plaza, open to a cafe, small public library and large, gentle steps to sit, picnic or skateboard.

68

/Karolina Obuszko

69

ÂťPORTFOLIO

The varying geometry of the northern volume floors allows different types of appartements as well as loggias and terraces. The simple floors of southern volume can accommodate multiple functions: offices, ateliers and, if such a need, housing.

I AM NOT A DOCTOR. If it wasn’t for one casual event I would probably be a doctor, just like my mother, father and even, grandfather. Thankfully, it happened just in time to review my choice. As a nine year old child, having attended multiple arts & crafts classes and competitions, having visited different museums and read countless books, I’ve developed a vivid imagination and I was sure I would become an architect. Now, looking back, I must say I am glad of my choice. Not only because I chose my true self over grandfather’s expectations, but most importantly, because I could not imagine myself in another profession. As a traveller, I collect many thoughts, pictures and memories. I feel that my personal library is lively and everexpanding as I stay open-minded and eager to learn more. Needless to say, I am also not afraid to overcome any obstacles that I might face in the pursuit of knowledge. I AM NOT A DOCTOR. I AM AN ARCHITECT.
