Component 2(Exam) Karolina Saulyte Change and/or stability

Specification & Brief There is a shortage of libraries and learning facilities that people attend to and use for their own benefit. My client want to encourage the use of learning facilities and through this bring together the community by introducing change in the area with a new building. The space that I will be producing will consist of two commercial spaces, a library with a café area. I have chosen to focus on these two spaces as my client wanted to bring together the community and provide an area for people to come together and socialise. I would like this building to have a indoor and outdoor space. The main theme that I will be experimenting with is Change and Stability. My building will be a change in the community it will be a new place for the community and therefore this is how it links to the theme. My Client want the building to be simplistic but interesting So I will be exploring symmetry and minimalism in my building design.

Specification:

 The space will be enough to accommodate a library and a community centre  The areas it will consist of are: • Reading area • Social zone • Activity area  Reception/information desk  It will be at least 2 floors  Fire exists  I want the place to have a lot of natural lighting so for this I will want large windows to allow sunlight to enter.

Location 

I have chosen Basildon as my location for the final library. Picking the town centre will allow easy access to the public as it will be located in the heart of Basildon. Basildon is a well populated area meaning that the building will attract people to come in and learn.



The new library space could act as a land mark that will attract other people from different areas to come visit and explore. This will make Basildon perhaps a Tourist site.

Reading Village / yuan Architects

-Jiaojiang, China

This library space is based on the central green space of the campus and has good vegetation. There is a giant tree in the site, which forms a prominent site feature. I liked this library in particular due to the separate library pods and how they are assembled differently around the tree. The buildings are very simplistic but aesthetic looking.

Tingbjerg Library and Culture House / COBE This cultural library in Denmark was created in 2018 by the COBE architects, Tingbjerg Library and Culture House is a new landmark building in Copenhagen, Denmark. COBE’s aim is for the project to serve as an urban catalyst and an architectural framework for social and cultural activities. The building is meant to contribute to a developing and positive community. I in particular liked this building as it is a wedge shaped shell. It is very narrow at only 1.5 meters wide.

Primary research

For my primary reasearch I decided to photograph books. This is because I wanted it to be relevant to my building. I stacked books and explored the shapes and forms they made to create drawrings that could be potential design ideas.

Initially the university proposed a straightforward five-storey block, but Bilbao convinced the board that separating the different levels and shifting them to create cantilevered forms would result in a more iconic and practical building. I like this building in particular as it gives me the idea of a living building as so much is going on and it isnt just simple and one continous shape.

Paper models Following on from my primary reasearch of books I decided to make paper models with pages from books. I played around with folding techniques to create interesting models. These models allowed me to explore symetry ans minmalism further.

Library of Birmingham

The building is made up of a stack of four rectangular volumes, which are staggered to create various canopies and terraces. Â the exterior of the building to reference the city's jewellery quarter, adding a filigree pattern of metal rings over golden, silver and glass facades.

Idea store -Whitechapel

The quality of design in Idea Stores plays a significant part in creating an accessible, attractive and contemporary space which encourages people to engage with library and learning services. The thing that fascinates me about this building is the boldly striped and glazed faรงade on the exterior of the building. This building is similar to what I want to create its quite simplistic but has an exciting and colourful exterior. This is why I decided to explore and take inspiration from the Idea store.
