Design Brief •

•

I will be designing a electric car charging station with a restaurant. With the increase of electric cars there is not enough charging areas. The areas that are available are always just at the back of a car park so I want to make a charging station that has a restaurant so people can have some sort of entertainment area whilst their car is charging. The theme for my station will be natural & organic as well as movement and flow. I want to make it seem more green and environmentally friendly. I want to move away from boring and simple gas stations and motorway services and design something more visually interesting and efficient.

Specification • • • • • • • •

The space will be enough to accommodate a area for recharging electric vehicles and a restaurant. It has to feature green spaces outside and in. Create the illusion of escaping from city and manufacturing. Have multiple entrances. Quite big area so many visitors can attend Have natural lighting as well as artificial lighting Washrooms Car parking spaces. Lounge area.

Location •

The location I have chosen is on the A13 on the Stanford le hope bypass. I would like to knock down the existing buildings In that area.

Primary research‌..

One of the themes that I was interested to research was natural and organic. I think it is fascinating how nature develops and changes over time, so I decided to look into the form and shape of trees. Every tree is so unique, they have different textures and designs on the trunks and their branches are positioned differently

Exploring this bath loofah has allowed me to develop my ideas and experiment with the textures of the sponge. All the different curved layers are very interesting and work well together. The design reminded me a bit of honeycomb.

Wire drawings These wire models were inspired by Moneo-brock and Issepi. My brief refers to the theme of movement and flow so I have created some wire sculptures by folding thin pieces of wire to influence my design. I mainly Played around with curved lines. I looked at the different curves in Moneo-brock’s buildings and just tried as many variations as I could that looked similar to his work

BURNHAM PAVILION DESIGN BY ZAHA HADID

When making this model I wanted to create something symmetrical and visually interesting. I used paper to fold symmetrically to create a form that was similar shaped to some sort of canopy. This model has function for the charging station but not sure if its enough for the restaurant that I want to accompany the charging station. It would need some re adjusting to make it more useful for two spaces.

Model 1

After researching the Np gas station I have created a model inspired by it. My model is mainly focused on curves and twists. I made the station separate from the restaurant to create a sense of getting away from the city and all the pollution. My restaurant is shaped like a cone and the exterior is covered in vegetation. For development of ideas I would like to recreate this but try to join the petrol station with the restaurant but have them on opposite sides to still create the separation.

It includes fuels station, McDonald's, recreational spaces and reflective pool.

Fuel Station & McDonalds Designed by Giorgi Khmaladze. I liked how this building is formatted .Spaces are composed in such way, that two major programs - vehicle services and dining are isolated from one another, both physically and visually so that all operations of fuel station are hidden from the view of the customers of the restaurant. The vegetation on the canopy acts as a ecological shield. This is effective as it is making the customer feel more eco friendly and it doesn’t feel as damaging for the environment when they are enclosed with vegetation.

Glass pavilion Designed by Moneo Brock Studio and is located in Cuenca, Spain. I found the architecture of this building very interesting as it is composed of 23 pentagonal modules that together form a structural network, this steel and glass pavilion addresses the relationship between the natural beauty of the landscape and the adjacent urban fabric. The geometrical form of this building was born of a search for an equilibrium between the repetition of a unit element and a composition of a whole, in the end creating a structure in which the module is no longer distinguishable.

Interior spaces For my interior I would like it to be quite contemporary with simple earthy colours. I want to have wooden elements in my interior. Additionally I want greenery in my restaurant as decoration as I want it to reflect my theme of natural and organic.

Specific content • Photographs, sketches, annotations • Develop ideas through primary research then turn it into sketches and then develop a cad model. • Material research

Movement & Flow

I also decided to look at the flow and movement of water to influence my ideas.

Primary pictures

Similar to Moneo Brock I was inspired to make a deign that reflects the birds body in some way as his design looked like bird wings in the skyline.

Viamala Raststatte Thusis Designed by Iseppi/Kurath it is located in GraubĂźnden, Switzerland I think this building is interesting as the shape of it almost blends in with the hills behind it. I like the idea of the building not disrupting the flow of nature and not obstructing the view as the shape of it follows the natural outline of the hills and cliffs behind it.

NP Gas Station, Spain Designed by Moneo-Brock, the NP Gas Station is located in Madrid, Spain. It’s constructed on 7391 sqm of site area. I like this building in particular as it captures the flow of movement through the curves on its canopy, on a clear statement towards landscape almost adopting the shape of flying bird for its canopy additionally the canopy also look like clouds on the horizon between earth and sky. The building has a more playful and contemporary character to other architecture. The shelter represents a fluid movements clearly looking to the natural landscape
