History and Who We Are
KOVSIE RAG COMMUNITY SERVICE
The University of the Free State’s RAG project was established in 1942. As the winds of war swept over the globe, a few enterprising students vibrantly decorated a vehicle and drove through the streets of Bloemfontein in an effort to support their fund raising activities for charity. Their creative and good hearted efforts were well received and they managed to raise £53, a substantial sum of money at the time. This event sparked further student fund raising efforts that eventually gave birth to Kovsie Rag.
ORGANISATIONAL PROFILE
2
RAG is an acronym for Receive and Give while JOOL represents “Jou Onbaatsugtige Opoffering vir Liefdadigheid”. The 72nd anniversary of the annual Kovsie RAG procession was celebrated in 2014 with the student body committing its energy, creativity and resources to fund raising for numerous worthy causes. For most people Kovsie Rag is synonymous with the much anticipated, fun filled parade that takes place in Bloemfontein during January every year. Kovsie Rag immediately conjures up images of fun and spectacular floats, accompanied by music, laughter and sunburned students cradling money tins. However, the annual Rag Parade, and the three weeks’ frenzied activity that precedes it, represents only a small segment of the broad range of fund raising activities that Kovsie Rag engages in throughout the year. In fact, as an active fund raising organisation, driven by the energy and enthusiasm of young people, the scope of our activities is vast and continuous. The character of RAG CS has developed over recent years to reflect the multicultural diversity of our community that RAG CS aims to serve. In this regard, continuous effort and emphasis are placed on efforts to expand fund raising and community service initiatives to all sectors of the community and to ensure that the allocation of RAG CS funds reflect the population and economic demographics of the Free State and Northern Cape communities.
What we do
Kovsie Rag CS has grown from strength to strength. In 2014 we assisted various organisations with products and/or money to an excess of R1 500 000-00! Our success is the result of the hard work and dedication of the students involved in Rag, as well as the loyal support of our valuable sponsors, which plays an increasingly vital role in addressing poverty in South Africa. In this way, we have donated tens of millions of Rands since our humble origins more than seventy years ago. Our main purpose is to engage actively in various fund raising initiatives and projects with the aim of making a contribution towards alleviating poverty while at the same time rendering service to various civil and charity organisations. As an organisation, Kovsie Rag Community Service maintains a series of well managed projects and events that together constitute the full scope of our fund raising endeavours.
3 ORGANISATIONAL PROFILE
Kovsie RAG CS has entered into various private sector partnerships and has evolved over the years to become one of South Africa’s biggest and most prominent rag campuses. In fact, of all the universities, we collect the largest amount of money per student and aims at donating R1 million every year to various charities and projects.
KOVSIE RAG COMMUNITY SERVICE
The main purpose of RAG CS is to engage in various fund raising and community service initiatives and projects with the aim of making a significant contribution to alleviate poverty and render various forms of assistance to civil society organisations, including the University’s own student community organisations, who work with the less privileged and disadvantaged communities in South Africa.
Values Aligned with the values of the University and the Division, are the values for Rag Community Service:
• Cherishing diversity • Commitment to each other and the community • Personal development and empowerment
KOVSIE RAG COMMUNITY SERVICE
• High ethical values (Trustworthy)
ORGANISATIONAL PROFILE

Vision Kovsie Rag Community Service is driven by passionate students and strives to become the preferred charitable organisation (for managing and executing community centred projects) in the Free State and Northern Cape. The brand of Rag CS is synonymous with community service and fund raising. Kovsie Rag Community Service has a role to play in and for the community and therefore wants to market their skills and expertise in managing and executing community projects. Community projects are defined as projects identified in partnership with the community (focused on community needs).
To create long term sustainable partnerships between Kovsie Rag Community Service and larger businesses - involvement in sustainable community development projects can be facilitated. RAG CS is a registered Not for Profit / NGO and is therefore duly constituted to raise and disburse funds.
Mission Our mission is to develop students that are trustworthy, competent managers and sensitive towards the environment that they serve. The Kovsie Rag Community Service functions on three pillars. The first pillar is fund raising; the second is the application of the funds raised; the third is partnerships in CSI projects. In order for these projects to be executed successfully, we need to develop our students as competent managers, ethical individuals and good team players. Our students must be able to make a positive contribution to the community.
The Kovsie Rag Community Service therefore aims to develop a third pillar, the CSI Partnership pillar, to capitalise on these opportunities. Our overall organisation can then be presented diagrammatically: We will market our capabilities in executing community based projects (community development) to larger business. We will create a small network of regionally based business that would like to invest in longer term sustainable community development projects as a way of developing close ties between the community, business and the University of the Free State.

SUCCESSFUL RAG CS FUND RAISING PROJECTS The main purpose of the projects is to generate funds for the less privileged. It also affords the student population the opportunity to informally connect with the community. The success of these projects depends on good management. The students get the opportunity to develop their skills in the planning and execution of the projects. The following are examples of structured activities that take place:
During October each year, first year students from all 26 residences become involved in fund raising for the our Ubuntu outreaches. This fun filled project includes door-to-door collections and is vital in our quest to make a practical and direct impact on our communities.
Evening Collections In an effort to enhance and support the main Rag parade, Rag CS initiated the Evening Fund raising project. This

On selected evenings at the beginning of the year, students roam the neighbourhoods of Bloemfontein to collect funds. The generous members of our community are highly responsive towards this fund raising drive and the Evening Fund raising project has proven to be highly successful.
Rag Finalists Every year, scores of young women & men compete for the coveted title of Rag Queen & Mr Rag. The semifinalists become debutantes for a period of six months. The twenty debutantes (10 Ladies & 10 Gentlemen) that raise the most money become the Rag Finalists. The Rag Finalists engage in various fund raising activities and also visits hospitals, old age homes, homes for the disabled as well as business and shopping centres.

ORGANISATIONAL PROFILE

The Coronation Ball consists of 2 projects, the Finalists and the Coronation Ball itself: The Coronation Ball naturally flows from the Finalists’ project and the annual Kovsie Rag Coronation Ball has become a highlight on the Free State’s social calendar. At this prestigious event, twenty finalists, comprising some of our region’s most beautiful young men and women, compete for the title of Rag Queen & Mr Rag. The winners will represent UFS at major national university related events and is referred to as the “faces of UFS”. This formal event represents the jewel in the crown of RAG and is a glamorous event with cutting edge technology, top designers, various performing artists and dancers, outstanding catering and faultless organisation. The Coronation Ball has developed a reputation as a celebrated social event that lends prestige and lustre to all involved. During this event RAG also gets the opportunity to thank and give publicity to their major sponsors and is this also the culmination of many months of hard work by numerous ladies and gentleman.
Ritsim Magazine The Ritsim is the voice of Kovsie Rag CS and has achieved veritable “coffee table” status over the years. As the official, annual Kovsie Rag/Jool publication, it not only reflects contemporary student humour but also serves as one of the most significant contributors to the overall fund raising initiatives of Kovsie Rag. The Ritsim has grown in size and impact through the years. This was fuelled by the contribution of advertisers, sponsors and the public. Between 20 000 and 30 000 copies are sold throughout the region each year. The publication offers advertisers an effective platform for marketing while at the same time allowing them the opportunity to be publicly linked to a charitable cause.
Float building
Entering the University system can be a daunting task. For many students, this will be an entrance into a new province, a new town and new ways of doing things. RAG can assist in this induction process by creating the opportunity to get to know new people in an informal and social setting. The float building area has been created to facilitate diverse interaction, where the 1st year students will get the opportunity to work together with other residences and peers. This has the benefit of developing team work and communication skills. Rag CS cooperates closely with the Gateway project of the University. Rag CS provides additional activities to induct the new student into University life. Recent activities have shown that the success of Gateway and Rag CS lies in this mutually beneficial partnership.event. The value of the Procession cannot be underestimated. It

PROCESSION The Rag Procession has most certainly become the annual highlight of the Bloemfontein community & social calendar. The RAG procession is conceptualized as the culmination of the work over a year - it is a celebration by the 1st year students of their entry into the campus community. For the respective committees & students involved in all RAG activities, this is a boasting celebration. It is a showcase to the public and community of what the students have achieved.

MORNING PROCESSION
ORGANISATIONAL PROFILE

In 2011 the Rag procession expanded, which brought this Rag community service project to the wider Bloemfontein community. The morning procession is the first showcase of the colourful floats and is an event on its own, where the main focus is service to the broader Bloemfontein community. During the morning procession we also visit Manganung & Heidedal where we distribute approximately 10 000 meals to the community.
EVENING PROCESSION
Since 2008, we hosted an evening procession and were totally overwhelmed by the positive feedback and strong impression it has left on the Bloemfontein community. Except for the beautiful floats, the procession is made up of a diverse group of participants, including students, drum majorettes, fire trucks, Harley Davidson motorcycles, the Rag Finalists & many more. The community shows up in their thousands to witness this spectacular event, where once a year the city comes to a stand still. The streets of Bloemfontein are packed with spectators enjoying and appreciating this historical event.
RAG FESTIVAL
The evening procession reaches its final destination at the Rag Festival, a community celebration where some of our countries top musicians have graced the stage, providing entertainment for a very diverse group of spectators. The evening also includes a firework display that is always a crowd pleaser. Attended by more than 5000 people, the day ends in a definite highlight.
This event offers maximum exposure to any Partner joining us in hosting a full-day event that not only provides entertainment but also serves the community. Being our most anticipated public event, with a very diverse consumer demographic, ensures a huge return on investment.

The “Twee Toring Kerk” situated in the centre of Bloemfontein city administrates this project and they attend to the need of the homeless, jobless and poor people in the city centre. Support is provided to the Towers of Hope Project, which are addressing some of these issues. This annual project takes place in Colleges and each College prepares and hand out about 900 hotdogs as well as cold drinks to the homeless community.
Soup Distribution During 2012/2013 the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at the University of the Free State conducted a research project which revealed that 59% of students at the UFS suffer from severe food insecurity. The Student Affairs Management team (SAM) consequently established a Food Insecurity Task Team (FITT) as a way to address this problem. On an quarterly basis RAG CS will be distributing soup & bread to those students in need.
