EDITORIAL / BY GIANCARLO TININI
The International CIK-FIA season ended with the two World
Championships held in September: KZ in Belgium and OK in Sweden. These championships are the most important for karting due to the high level of teams and drivers partaking in them. These events require important investments for all the operators in this sector (chassis and engine constructors, teams, tyres provides) and drivers, which have to pay off in terms of image and commercial return. CIK-FIA and Promoter should grant these, creating a well defined – and clear to the public – ranking of Karting’s sporting events. Nowadays we certainly have too many races and championships that have the ranking of International events and this created a huge energy dispersion and a counter-productive fractioning. This is especially true considering the target set ahead to have a wider adoption of OK and KZ classes in National Championships. As the sporting season is turning to its end, we can draw a first balance, which cannot be but positive, despite not getting the victory of a World Championship as happened in recent years, especially in KZ. Despite this, we claimed a good P3 at the OK Junior and OK European Championships (respectively with Bortoleto and Hiltbrand), we won the KZ European Championship with Jorrit Pex and came third at the KZ World Championship with Fabian Federer. We also scored a lot of victories in National Championships in France, Spain, Italy, Germany, North Europe, Asia, USA and South America. T hese results
highlight the competitiveness of our material and the excellent work done by our racing team, our engine preparators, technical partners, satellite teams, importers and drivers.
Regarding the activity of our company, I am delighted to underline the positive feedback we had on our Electric Kart E-Drenaline, that recorded a strong sales
growth in the first semester, but that has also been highly appreciated by our customers. This product is gaining a more and more important
role in our Rental range, which is one of the most complete and highest quality on the market. We also devised several sporting activities and events around it, that combine the excellence of the product with special events capable of bringing out its great features and delivering a complete experience to our customers. I wish you a pleasant reading of this online publication. I close this editorial revealing that, following the success of our Year Book last year, we will have another edition this year with more than 230 printed pages on sale online and at our stores.

A feature of OK engines is the push start since clutch and starter motor are not present. These simplifications have been highly successful in International races and a CIK-FIA action to introduce them in Championships managed by National ASNs would be more than welcome. In this way, Karting could be a more wide-spread sport on a global level. In this picture, Andrea Rosso is at the start of a race of the European Championship assisted by his mechanic Matthieu Neron.

Emilien Denner and KalĂŹ Kart had a positive season. The pairing dominated KZ2 Cup at the prestigious DKM Championship, shone in the KZ2 European Championship and were among the quickest of the World Cup in Genk. The historic brand part of the Tinini Group will be involved in several activities in 2019 and the KZ categories will be central in its sporting and commercial strategies.

Simone Cunati joined team CRG - Modena Kart after the beginning of the season and has been shining since the beginning in KZ2 at the Italian Championship, where he secured the victory in the closing round held in Castelletto di Branduzzo. The work done by partner teams is very important to CRG, as it contributes to brake new records every year and to acquire an important know how.

CRG Racing team has taken part in the prestigious 24H Karting of Le Mans also in this season with the official engine support by TM. The Italian outfit fielded a top class lineup featuring World Champions of the likes of Paolo De Conto and Pedro Hiltbrand alongside Callum Bradshaw and Andrea Rosso. The race awarded the FIA Karting Endurance title and adhered International OK technical regulations. Following the pole position in qualifying, two unlucky episodes put the team out of the fight for the victory, but the lineup managed to clinch a prestigious International podium in P3.

on the podium. Federer completed with a high his International season after coming third also at the KZ European Championship and winning the DKM German Championship. The KZ World Championship went to Patrick Hajek this year. Rick Dreezen followed him at the flag.
“Kart Grand Prix Belgium in Genk did not go very well for CRG Racing team both in the only round of the KZ World Championship and in the KZ2 International Super Cup. CRG drivers were delayed by several reasons in qualifying and the Belgian weekend has been quite steep ever since.
Paolo De Conto, 2016 World Champion in Kristianstad and 2017 World Champion in Wackersdorf had to abdicate instead. De Conto started the weekend very poorly, as he retired from qualifying due to a technical problem. In the heats De Conto bounced back up to P14 and has been the absolute quickest in the Final,
Fabian Federer, on CRG-Tm run by SRP Racing Team, secured a great place taking P3 in front of about 4.000 spectators. The Italian driver could shine in qualifying, where he claimed a great pole position, before ending heats in P6. CRG DRAWING A BALANCE AT THE END OF THE KZ WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
T
he KZ World Championship in Belgium did not end up with a victory for CRG as happened in the past three years, but performances have been once again excellent, which confirmed the great quality of the CRG-TM pairing and the very high level of all drivers of the Racing Team and partner teams. The comment of Fabian Federer, Paolo De Conto, Pedro Hiltbrand, Gaetano Di Mauro and Glenn Keyaert.
compete on a CRG chassis. This meaningful statistics is further improved by the drivers on track for Maranello, DR and GP Racing, with which CRG has a technological partnership in place. The circuit of Genk has been a great setting for this important event that counted more than 4.000 spectators that certainly enjoyed the great spectacle put on by the International Karting categories KZ and KZ2. The event kicked off in the best possible way for CRG, as Fabian Federer (Team SRP) posted the pole position, but an unlucky episode unfortunately stopped Paolo De Conto, Pedro Hiltbrand and Jorrit Pex in qualifying (water leak on De Conto’s kart). This troubled start did not allow these drivers to secure a top ten start on the Final’s starting grid, nor to work at best to prepare the Final during the heats, as CRG drivers always had some ground to get back and were busy recovering from the back of the pack. Qualifying stages are in fact very useful moment to fine tune all the technical details that indeed make the difference in such a highly competitive event. Despite this, the performance of all CRG drivers have been excellent in the Final, which confirmed the remarkable quality of the CRG-TM material and the high level of all the drivers of the Racing Team and partner teams.
After three successful years in a row, edition 2018 of the KZ World Championship held in Genk (Belgium) did not celebrate a CRG driver on the top step of the podium. This does not mean that the performance of CRG drivers and chassis was not spot on. CRG colors have been a synonym of KZ, a leading role that has been achieved with tens of International victories, the latest of which is the CIK-FIA 2018 European Championship taken with Jorrit Pex. CRG has been winning at least one of the two titles KZ and KZ2 for 7 years in a row and the World Championship held in Genk confirmed the edge of the Italian company, that counted the highest number of chassis present in the official Entry List: 7 drivers out of 34 in KZ and 22 of the 106 of KZ2 chose in fact to

THE COMMENT OF THE PROTAGONISTS FABIAN FEDERER (KZ, TEAM CRG-SRP): «I am happy for the end result because I have been slowed down by an accelerator problem in the closing stages, therefore the podium and the pole position are two great results in such an important event. We had an excellent balance on the kart and we came close to fight for the win». PAOLO DE CONTO (KZ): «In a high level competition like the World Championship the problem in qualifying affected our work a lot. In the heats we have always been forced to recover positions and we could not focus on refining the setup and carburetor tunings. Starting below P10 in the Final, I lost a lot of time in the initial stages to find my rhythm and close in on the front runners, but I managed to climb up the field well. I always lapped on very good lap times. Obviously, had we started in the first two rows, the race would have been completely different. Some episodes hit on our results this year, unfortunately, both here at the World Championship and at the European Championship». PEDRO HILTBRAND (KZ): «The good thing of this World Championship is the great speed we showed since free practice. After the problem in qualifying and a penalty for the front fairing the starting position was obviously too far from the front to aim to the victory. At the beginning of the Final I could not get some positions back in the heat of the start, but despite of this I had a great pace and I could end very close to the podium, had it not been for the problem that stopped me early. We have to look at the good performance of our material and focus on coming back stronger in the next appointments. I would like to thank the whole team for the hard work done over the weekend and TM that provided us, as always, with an excellent support regarding engines».
Fabian Federer claimed P3, taking another World Championship podium that makes his great season even richer. Paolo De Conto managed to climb up to P5 posting the fastest lap of the race. Jorrit Pex also run a strong race and closed right behind him. Pedro Hiltbrand was less lucky instead, as he was stopped by a technical problem early on when he was among the quickest on track. Stan Pex and Andrea Dalè also put in very good performances both in the Final and in qualifying stages. In KZ2 Emilien Denner could not score another great result after the great weekend of Lonato in the European Championship and the KZ2 Cup victory in DKM. The French had to pay the fee of a DNF in the first heat and could not compete at his usual standards in this occasion. The Brazilian Gaetano Di Mauro was the best of CRG drivers and deservedly came close to the podium ending 4th. Important figures have been scored by CRG in KZ2, as the Italian company counted the highest number of drivers qualified for the Final on its chassis. The World Championship is run in one single weekend and this does not leave any room for errors, as there is no chance to bounce back from a DNF, as it is the case of championships run on several rounds.
GAETANO DI MAURO (KZ2): «I am very happy for this great result: I am proud for being in the best 5 drivers in the World at this World Cup. The team did an exceptional work and to me the team’s work has been fundamental, as I do not compete much in European races. We had the perfect setup for the Final, great cornering
11
RACING TEAM / CIK-FIA WORLD CHAMPI ONSHIP recovering further ground up to P5 – very close to the podium indeed, as he closed 0.042s from Alex Irlando and just over a tenth off Federer. It would have been difficult to do more. Pedro Hiltbrand was also hit by bad luck in qualifying due to a technical problem. Hiltbrand has been really impressive in the heats where he managed to climb up to P11, but he had to give up again in the Final due to the failure of a hose clamp of the water pipe. The new European Champion Jorrit Pex was sixth for CRG, while Stan Pex was 11th and Andrea Dalè 14th.
speed, effective braking and traction. I could have finished on the podium for sure, but when I attacked Renaudin he defended himself very well and we both lost out to Vidales. This does not take anything from the satisfaction of competing at high levels for the whole racing weekend». GLENN KEYAERT (TEAM MANAGER CRG): «We are a bit disappointed because De Conto and Hiltbrand had the potential to fight for the victory, but some unlucky episodes hit their chances badly. From a technical standpoint, the balance is positive even if the result could have been a lot better. We have been very competitive and this is very important for the impact that the racing activity has on the production of our karts. The work done by our engine partners at TM has been excellent and our package has been once again among the strongest of KZ. We have to congratulate our partner team SRP and Fabian Federer for the podium, CRG Holland and Pex brothers that confirmed their speed in the category. We also put in excellent performances in KZ2 and we missed out on taking the podium by a whisker. We have always won a World title in KZ or KZ2 in the past 7 years, next year we will come back stronger to climb on the top step of the podium. Now we congratulate the winners and look at the next appointments of this season».
A good overall race was run by the Brazilian of CRG Gaetano Gomes Di Mauro in KZ2, as he came third on CRG-Tm and has always been among the quickest, displaying a very quick race pace both in the heats, where he came sixth, and in the Final, where he seemed to have the podium at reach. The Spanish driver Gerard Cebrian Ariza also run a great race recovering from P24 to P11, while Emilien Denner, on Kalì-Kart, had to settle for P12 behind Cebrian after being third in the European Championship. The Dutch Dylan Davies (Zanardi) was 15th, Filippo Berto was quite unlucky as he went off due to an incident and recovered afterwards up to P23. The Dutch Max Tubben of CRG Holland had to retire after closing heats in P5. Jean Luyet, Enrico Prosperi, Marco Valenti, Arto Ojaranta and Fotis Sotiropoulos did not manage to qualify for the Final instead. The CIK-FIA KZ2 title went to Matteo Viganò, who posted the pole position time, won heats and Final. Complete results at www.cikfia.com.

KRISTIANSTAD GABRIEL BORTOLETO SECURED THE THIRD PLACE AT THE OK-JUNIOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP IN SWEDEN. GREAT PERFORMANCES WERE ALSO PUT IN BY BRADSHAW AND GALLI IN OK. HILTBRAND COMPLETED A GREAT COMEBACK. ROSSO RETIRED DUE TO THE FAILURE OF THE DRIVE CHAIN
CRG Racing Team obtained great results in Sweden at the
Circuit of Kristianstad where the OK and OK-Junior World Championships reached their conclusion with record numbers: 102 drivers in OK and 113 in OKJ. CRG drivers put in very strong results also in this round and virtually all of them managed to qualify for the final stages. The podium arrived in OK-Junior with the young and promising driver Gabriel

Bortoleto, who is at his third European Championship and now has a third place in OKJ under his belt, a result that confirms his speed and the quality of the CRG-TM package. The level of performance in OK was also very high and Callum Bradshaw, who was eventually sixth in the Final after recovering 10 places, could have aimed to the podium if his starting position had not been badly

Several hiccups in qualifying relegated Pedro Hildbrand to start from the back of the grid, but he also put in an exceptional comeback race ending 13th after recovering a stunning 18 places. Andrea Rosso had to retire from the Final due to the failure of the drive chain, but he put in great performances during the whole weekend. Ayrton Fontecha could not qualify for the Final instead. Alongside the third place obtained by Gabriel Bortoleto, other good satisfactions could have come from OK-Junior’s Final, but several issues did not allow the other drivers of the Italian outfit to shine as they

PROTAGONIST QUOTES GABRIEL BORTOLETO (OKJ): «Ending third out of more than 110 of the best drivers in the World is a great result and I am very happy about it. The podium at this World Championship is a great end to a season in which we have always been among the protagonists, starting from WSK races all the way to the 3rd place at the European Championship. Unfortunately, I was on the outside at the start of this Final and I lost contact with the front runners, therefore I had to push hard early on to fill the gap and towards the end I had a slight performance drop. I want to really thank the team that made me grow as a driver in the past couple of years and TM that provided us with an excellent support regarding engines. After this good result I am ready to make my debut in OK in the season’s finale».
> Pedro Hiltbrand (3), Andrea Rosso (20), OK-J <
CALLUM BRADSHAW (OK): «I am very happy about the 6th place and my driving in the Final that allowed me to get a lot of places back. The team did an exceptional work for the whole weekend and, despite the changing weather conditions, we always had excellent performances. Unfortunately, we did not finish one heat due to some tough luck and this prevented us to start the Final from the top ten. I am pretty sure we could have fought for the podium». GLENN KEYAERT (TEAM MANAGER): «The most positive aspect is that we placed nearly all our drivers on the starting grid of the Final. With more than 100 drivers on track, being among the top 34 is definitely not a sure thing. Our technical package has been versatile in all conditions. From the wet to the dry it always provided drivers with a good feeling on track and podium performances in both categories. I would like to thank the staff of the racing team that accomplished a great work in this World Championship, as well as our technical partners. I congratulate Gabriel Bortoleto for this great race that confirmed him among the most interesting drivers of OK Junior».

would have deserved. A positive performance was eventually put in by Enzo Riccardo Scionti, who ended the Final in 14th place, while Enzo Trulli was 25th at the end of a good qualifying. Alfio Andrea Spina was penalized first and disqualified later on due to the front fairing dropped after a contact, which is still quite a debated and controversial topic. Christian Ho Zong Sean, Tyler Gonzalez, Tyler Maxson and Xizheng Huang could not qualify for the OK-Junior Final instead.

AMPFING CRG AND GABRIEL BORTOLETO SECURED A GOOD RESULT IN THE THIRD ROUND OF THE EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP IN OK-JUNIOR. IN OK, PEDRO HILTBRAND HAD TO CONCEDE THE FIRST PLACE OF THE CLASSIFICATION, AS HE WAS NINTH IN THE FINAL, BUT THE FINAL CLASSIFICATIONS WILL BE DEFINED IN THE CLOSER AT ESSAY
The third round of the CIK-FIA European Championship for OK and OK-Junior took place in Germany, on the 1.063 meters of the circuit in Ampfing. CRG drivers have been shining in both categories also in this round held in Bavaria. The two main contenders, Pedro Hiltbrand in OK and Gabriel Bortoleto in OK-Junior, gave their best to stay close to the top of the classification. The best end result went to Bortoleto in OKJunior: the quick Brazilian driver secured in fact an important third place, after starting the Final on pole and he now stands second in the Championship. Hiltbrand lacked a little bit of pace instead and lost the classification lead. BORTOLETO ON THE PODIUM IN OKJUNIOR. In OK-Junior, Bortoleto claimed a well deserved podium and in truth P3 was quite tight on him due to his performance during the whole weekend in Ampfing. The third place allowed Bortoleto to get the second place of the classification though at 52 points, equal with Minì and only 17 shy of Aron, who claimed his second win in Ampfing reaching 69 points.

Alfio Andrea Spina and Christian Ho could not qualify due to an incident in the closing heat, while Paolo Gallo could not qualify either on KalĂŹ-Kart. Xizheng Huang could not partake in the race due to the pain coming from a muscle contracture as Nikhil Bohra, who suffered from rib pain.
Callum Bradshaw managed to recover from the back of the grid up to P21. Hiltbrand had to concede the classification lead and is now second 19 points shy of Janker, who won the race thanks to the renounce of marque-mate Travisanutto (who is out of the games anyway), who handed the victory to Janker at the finish line. Regarding the other CRG drivers, Ayrton Fontecha could not qualify for the final, despite a strong qualifying session, Asia Mondino did not qualify either.
HILTBRAND HARD-FIGHTER IN OK. In OK, alongside Pedro Hiltbrand, Andrea Rosso also took part in the Final. He could have started higher up on the grid, had he not received a penalty in the first qualifying heat, as Callum Bradshaw who experienced an unlucky retirement in the closing heat. Hiltbrand crossed the finish line in ninth place at the end of a hard-fought race, pipping team mate Andrea Rosso.
The two OK and OK-Junior Championships will reach their conclusion on August 5th in France with the fourth round that will be run in Essay. Classifications are still quite open in both categories, thanks also to the two mandatory discards of the worst results of qualfiying heats and Finals. with the Championship win. His race was later on voided by Stewards though, as they decided to penalize him for an overtaking move on Celenta, that ended up in a collision between the two. Due to this episode, that was judged not as normal racing incident, De Conto was handed a 10s time penalty. The disappointment for this decision was mitigated by the fact that another CRG driver, Fabian Federer, inherited the win after a great race, and that the title of European Champion went to Jorrit Pex, who ended the Final in fifth place and was promoted from second to first in the overall classification. CRG claimed its 46th European title and the 24th in shifter categories. This result confirmed the chassis made by the Italian factory on top of the International scene and places CRG as great favourite to the victory of the KZ World Championship and World Cup KZ2 next September in Genk. THE INTERVIEW PAOLO DE CONTO: «This weekend has been extremely positive in terms of performance and work done by the team. Regarding the Stewards’ decision, I believe it is deeply unfair and excessive compared to the consequences it had. I think it is necessary to extend the Stewards Board to former drivers, as happens in the case of F1, since they are figures capable of understanding an overtaking move technically and work out the unfair or dangerous moves from the normal overtakings and duels. Celenta had a problem and I did not have any intention to push for an overtaking, but then he made a little mistake and I got in. We clarified with each other and are fine amongst ourselves. The fact that the title remained at CRG damage limitation, but if I think to a World Championship run in a single race, I do not feel serene nor comfortable with the current evaluation criteria».
> Max Tubben, KZ2 <
JORRIT PEX: «I am really happy for the title victory, even though I am sorry for the decision of the Stewards regarding Paolo. He did a great race today. For me and my team this has been a very positive championship, we have been competitive in all the racing stages and did a great job in both rounds. I thank all the staff, TM and CRG that provides us with an excellent support. Now we will focus on the World Championship in Genk aiming high».
3rd in the final classification. Among the other CRG drivers, Jean Luyet has also scored a strong result in KZ2 ending the Final in 11th position, but also showing great speed in qualifying heats. Marco Valenti also deserved a round of applause as he qualified for his first Final of a European Championship. The Spanish driver Gerard Cebrian Ariza should also have run the Final, but he was not allowed to get on the grid, due to a 2 minutes delay at the entry gate! Complete results are available at www.cik-fia.com
EMILIEN DENNER: «The whole weekend has been good, starting from the pole position in qualifying, to P1 after heats and the final win. Winning a final at the European Championship and gaining the third position of the classification is a huge satisfaction for me. Everything clicked, from engine to chassis. Thanks to CRG and to the preparator Dal Doss. I thank everyone. Now I will compete in DKM at Kerpen and then Genk, where I will be in the fight for the victory in KZ2 Cup. I finally will contest KZ2 International Super Cup, where I hope to get a good result too».

ESSAY CRG COLORS CAME THIRD IN THE TWO EUROPEAN CIK-FIA CHAMPIONSHIP AT THE END OF THE CLOSING ROUND HELD IN FRANCE. PEDRO HILTBRAND WAS THIRD IN THE OK EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP, WHILE GABRIEL BORTOLETO DID THE SAME IN THE OK-JUNIOR’S AND CLAIMED A PODIUM IN ESSAY 28
An intense weekend has been held
tin Essay (France) in the event that awarded the two European titles of OK and OK-Junior. CRG ended third in the final standings of the OK European Championship with Pedro Hiltbrand and in the European OK-Junior Championship with Gabriel Bortoleto. The final balance is positive for CRG, even though it could have been better, but the overall performance of CRG drivers has been very good: Andrea Rosso, Callum Bradshaw and Ayrton Fontecha have always been on top places of heats, as did Kas Haverkort in OK. In Junior, Enzo Trulli, Alfio Andrea Spina (who claimed his maiden win in a heat) and Paolo Gallo (KalĂŹ-Kart) displayed great performances. All in all, the CRG-Tm package has shown a great adaptability to all tracks and conditions. In OK, Pedro Hiltbrand suffered a technical problem since qualifying practice and had to make up for the lost ground all the way until the retirement in the Final. He managed anyway to end on the third step of the podium of the European Championship, but had not he experienced that initial problem, the Spanish driver of CRG could have aimed to a more prestigious result. In OK, Callum Bradshaw was sixth, while Kas Haverkort had to retire due to a technical problem, as did Andrea Rosso, who was stopped by a contact with Vidales and Maloney.

RACING TEAM / WSK OPEN CUP 21-24 JUNE
ADRIA KAS HAVERKORT GRABS THE SECOND PLACE IN THE OK FINAL WITH THE ZANARDI TEAM AT THE WSK OPEN CUP IN LONATO. GOOD PERFORMANCES FOR ALL THE CRG DRIVERS IN EVERY CATEGORY
The South Garda Karting circuit in
Lonato hosted the new international meeting of the WSK Open Cup on June 24th, finding an excellent participation and competitiveness of the CRG drivers in every category. Amongst all, Kas Haverkort stood out in the OK class, on CRG-Tm with the Zanardi Racing Team, performing very well until reaching the second place on the podium, after a great final where the Dutch driver made the best absolute lap. Always in OK, Asia Mondino was instead forced to retire after being competitive for all the weekend in Lonato. Great performances also for Andrea Dalè and Emilien Denner (on Kalì-Kart) and the other CRG drivers, Jean Luyet and Marco Valenti, in KZ2. The best result was achieved by Andrea Dalè with the second place in Prefinal-A and 6th in the Final, but also Denner could have reached much more than the 15th place, if it wasn’t for some race contacts, after achieving the 5th place in Prefinal-B. Luyet ended in 22nd place from the 6th place of Prefinal-B, Valenti 25th. The driver from Macao Chang Wing Chung ended in 30th place. Benjamin Tornqvist had to retire in Prefinal-B, after being 10th after the heats.

In OK Junior, Alfio Andrea Spina proved to be a constantly growing driver. The young CRG driver was always among the fastest, until reaching the 11th place in the Final, ahead of the Dutch Robert De Haan. Enzo Scionti and Enzo Trulli were instead forced to retire, so as Christian Ho. Leonardo Bertini Colla couldn’t qualify for the Final due to an accident in Prefinal-B, so as Nikhil Bohra who retired in Prefinal-A. Full results on www.wskarting.it

with the fifth and closing round held in Genk (Belgium). CRG hauled another great result with the double victory of the KZ2 title with Fabian Federer, on CRG-TM-Vega run by Team SRP, and with Emilien Denner in KZ2 Cup, who competed for CRG Holland on Kalì-Kart-TM-Vega. The result obtained in the 2018 DKM campaign by CRG has been rounded off by locking out the top three of the final standings of KZ2.
