ELEMENT MODEL MAKING

PIRANESI SKETCH

AN ELEMENT IS CHOSEN AND STUDIED TO GET ITS ESSENCE AND IMPLEMENTED AT FORTHCOMING STAGES.

PIRANESI’S SKETCHING TECHNIQUE IS USED TO TRACE THE DIRECTION AND QUALITY OF LIGHT ENTERING A SPACE.

THE VOIDS ARE CARVED OF SOLID HILLOCK WHERE THE RIVER PASSES THROUGH THE SPACES OF THE RESIDENCE CREATING A SERENE ENVIRONMENT. FLOORS ARE DIVIDED INTO LAYERS BASED ON PRIVACY LEVELS GROUND FLOOR -LIVING ROOM COMMON FOR CHANDRALEKHA AND HER VISITORS FIRST FLOOR -PRIVATE SPACES INCLUDES BEDROOM, KITCHEN, DINING. SECONG FLOOR - LABORATORY AT THE MOST PRIVATE ZONE.

5

HORIZON VARIES AT DIFFERENT LEVELS, WHEREAS THE PRIVATE SPACES DEMANDS A BETTER VIEW THAN THE COMMON SPACES BELOW.

NATURAL LIGHT IS ALLOWED TO LIT THE VOLUME OF SPACE THROUGH SKYLIGHT .

LABORATORY IS CANTILEVERED OUT TO GET A WIDE VIEW .

THE SOUND OF THE WATER CAN BE FROM THE BEDROOM AND LABORATORY WHICH GIVES REFRESHMENT.

PAADASHALA

LONG AGO GURUKULAM WAS THE MEANS OF LEARNING. STUDENTS LEARN IN A SERENE ENVIRONMENT AND GAINED KNOWLEDGE FROM NATURE. THE RELATION BETWEEN THE STUDENT AND TEACHER WAS QUITE DIFFERENT. EXPERIENCE WAS THEIR FIRST TEACHER.

ORIENTATION

INITIAL IDEA

PAADASHALA IS ORIENTED CONSIDERING THE SRIRANGAM IN A WAY BY HAVING A GRADUAL ENTRY WHERE STUDENTS ENTERING LOOKS AT THE SRIRANGAM ALL WAY THROUGH WHICH MAY GIVE THEM PEACE.

THE WORD PAADASHALA REFLECTED IN TIME THE COURAGE AND AUDACITY OF FOREFATHERS . THEIR LEARNINGS FROM NATURE MADE THEM POWERFUL AND SHARP IN BOTH SCIENCE AND MARTIAL. THE VISION RESULTED IN A FIGHTING ARENA

THE IDEA DEVELOPED INTO A CLUSTER OF CLASSROOMS WITH ARENA AS THE CORE.

THE GEOMETRY IS BROKEN AND DISTORTED TO ALMOST AN ELLIPSE TO MAKE THE SPACE INSIDE EXTROVERT.

POSTURES OF MARTIAL ARTS ARE STUDIED TO UNDERSTAND THE DOMINANT ,MASTERFUL AND SUPERIOR CHARACTER BEHIND EACH POSTURES.

FORM REFLECTS THE POWER AND DOMINANCE WITH ITS OWN CHARACTER.

EACH POSTURE HAS A CHARACTER. CHARACTERS ARE RELATED TO EACH OTHER TO DEPICT A PARTICULAR SCENE.

HIGHER OFFICIALS AND THE STAFFS OF THE SCHOOL ARE RELATED AS A MASTER AND A STUDENT .

11

THE LEVELS ARE ADJUSTED TO SHOWOFF THE HIGHER OFFICIALS AND THE RESPECT OF THE STAFFS TO THE OFFICIALS.

THE SPATIAL PLANNING EVOLVED WITH HAVING THE FIGHTING ARENA AS THE CORE. LEVELS GOES DOWN GRADUALLY FROM THE ENTRY TO THE PLAY AREA AT THE END. THE TRAINING AREAS ACT AS A BUFFER ZONE.

12

SITE PLAN ,FLOOR PLANS AND SECTIONS MAIN PARKING AREA IS LOCATED NEAR THE ENTRANCE.

LIBRARY IS LOCATED GROUND FLOOR TO GET LESS VEHICLE NOISE FROM THE ROAD.

SPECIAL STUDIOS ARE LOCATED AT THE TOP FLOOR AS THEY DO NOT REQUIRE ROUTINE ACCESS.

THE COLUMNS ARE TILTED AS IT GOES WITH THE FORM . ADMIN BLOCKS ARE LOCATED NEAR THE ENTRANCE WITH A GATHERING PLATFORM BETWEEN. TRAINING AREAS ARE ZONED OUTSIDE THE CLASS ROOM CLUSTER NEAR THE RIVER AS IT CAN BE ACCESSED ANYTIME . CYCLES ARE PARKED NEAR THE TRAINING AREA.

THROUGH OUT HUMAN HISTORY ,THE SKY HAS EARNED A PROFOUND AND SACRED MEANING. FOR IN A WARM CLIMATE THE BEST SPACE TO BE IN THE LATE EVENINGS AND IN THE EARLY MORNINGS IS OUTDOORS, UNDER THE OPEN SKY. EVEN IN DENSE HOUSING, INDIVIDUAL TERRACES AND GARDENS CAN BE PROVIDED. “FOR A WHOLE FAMILY TO LIVE IN A SMALL ALL PURPOSE ROOM OPEN TO SKY IS TRULY ESSENTIAL FOR ALL THE ACTIVITIES THAT CANNOT FIND PLACE INDOORS”-CHARLES CORREA

EVOLUTION OF SHAPE GRAMMAR EPISODE 1: “THE INTERACTION” THE SPACES CAN BE PLANED ACCORDINGLY SO THAT INTERACTIONS CAN HAPPEN ACCIDENTALLY AND MERGE WITH THE ROUTINE ACTIVITIES.

EPISODE 4 : THE BAD COURTYARD COMMUNITY SPACES DOES NOT WORK WELL FOR THE UPPER FLOORS THE COURTYARD BEING STAGGERED DOES NOT FORM AN ENCLOSURE.

EPISODE 2: COURTYARDS AND TERRACES

EPISODE 5 : THE NEW BORN COURTYARD

THE BLOCKS WERE STAGGERED IN AND OUT TO GET TERRACES

INSTEAD OF HAVING THE NARROW SIDE OF FACADE ON THE ROAD SIDE THE FACADE FACING THE COURTYARD CAN BE MADE NARROW.

EPISODE 3: COMMUNITY SPACES

THE MORE ENCLOSED THE COURTYARD IS THE MORE EFFECTIVE IT IS

THE STAGGERED BLOCKS WERE REPEATED IN VARIOUS POSSIBILITIES .

THIS CLUSTER IN ADDITION TO THE COMMUNITY SPACE IT HAS ALL THE LONGEST WALLS ARE ALONG NORTH AND SOUTH WHICH HAS LESS HEAT GAIN.. A COMMUNITY SPACE IS FORMED CONNECTING THE KITCHENS OF THE INDIVIDUAL BLOCKS WHICH CONNECTS THE WOMEN AMONG THE COMMUNITY 16

EPISODE 6 : COOL ME UP THE WALLS EXPOSED TO SUN ARE DONE WITH TECHNIQUE OF STAGGERING THE BRICK BONDS TO GET THE WALL SHADED

EPISODE 7: ME AND MY NEIGHBOUR

CLIMAX : HERE I AM!

THE COMMUNITY SPACES ARE SEPERATED BY ROADS AND THE ENTRY TO THE INDIVIDUAL UNITS WERE FROM THE ROADS

THE ROADS PASSING THROUGH THE COMMUNITY SPACES ARE REMOVED END THE BACKYARDS ARE CONVERTED INTO ENTRY ZONES

EVOLVED SHAPE GRAMMAR

THE BEST PLACE TO SPEND TIME IN LATE EVENINGS AND EARLY MORNINGS.

THE BACKYARDS OF ALL THE UNITS GETS CONNECTED IN THE COMMUNITY SPACE.

COMPETITION WORKS 59TH-ANNUAL NASA DESIGN COMPETITION A parallel projection has a unique capacity of leveling the human eye and its perspective. It levels all indentations to a singular surface, to the extent that it denies the perception of actual form / space / reality. The exercise is about representation of the city and its architectural form in its most interesting way of reinterpretation.

This is an open ended exercise for a wide spectrum of ideations and to develop new ways of imagination of the city / its planning / form. As in the book of Italo Calvino – Invisible Cities, our memories construct innumerable subjective ways of writing and talking about places that we see / remember / imagine. Limiting the expression to the mode of innovative drawing is a means of finding a connect, and looking at possible new narratives that operates through drawing as a space. SHEET 1: The sheet portrays the plan of the city with elevations projected parallel from the plan. plan. The city is located in an ocean with rotating hydro turbines to clean and purify ocean water. The representation of waves around the structure converges into sky for elevation. SHEET 2: The sheet depicts the activities and the three levels of the entire structure. The activities from the sea bottom to sky is represented in abstract and parallel projection. The various colors used expresses the different levels surrounding the structure

Ee STAIRS INTERNATIONAL DESIGN COMPETITION

BRIEF: In the Corporate Staircase category EeStairs invites entrants to design a product that is much more than a straightforward and functional design. The modern workspace has evolved dramatically in recent years as employers realize that investing in an inspiring space is a fantastic way to motivate staff. To develop a design that will bring added functionality to the all too often overlooked staircase in a corporate environment.
