An Extension to the existing Chicago Cultural Center, coming soon!

The [FUN]damental [LAB]yrinth or the [FUN LAB] aims to be the typological solution to the frustration that has been building up within all of us due to stress, monotony, and the resultant health issues – both mental and physical as a result of a hectic, boring, and lonely urban lifestyle in an increasingly impersonal physical environment. We can blame this frustration on several aspects of our lives, specifically the Liminality of the Urban Landscapes we now unfortunately inhabit.

ENJOY amusement park, water park, shopping center, art spillouts & performances

EXPLORE

We need an outlet, a physical conduit for our emotions. Art is a decent idea of expression, but it can be restrictive to some. A concert maybe then? Spending quality time with friends and family in the city? – but where? An amusement parklike break to get the blood pumping, within the city itself? – but how? A place veryone can have their own definition of fun? – definitely but WHERE? That is what the [FUN LAB] aims to achieve by addressing ‘subjective fun’.

It will deal with the increasing liminality of urban landscapes and curate interpersonal relationships not just amongst us, but also amongst us and the spaces we inhabit through a fresh urban typology powered by the Digital Dimension, driven by data and mixed realities.

CONVENE meeting & events

There needs to be a work life equilibrium and the [FUN LAB] is cognizant of that. Hence, it produces a mixed-use labyrinth that includes workspaces, recreational spaces, open-green spaces, and retail spaces, specifically curated for a vertical urban setting powered by the fifth dimension – the Digital.

The [FUN LAB] is proposed as an extension to the museum and arts component of the Chicago Cultural Center, establishing an epicenter for urban recreation, at the Millennium Park in Chicago!

The [FUN]damental [LAB]yrinth proposes a total integration of people and spaces via technology. Drones, Big Data, & Augmented Reality, will effectively be used to address the daily needs, immediate demands, and fulfill entertainment-based aspirations of the people through a personalized delivery system by tapping into the ubiquity of their smart devices.

The Static Observatory in the sky is boring. Here, the [FUN LAB] breaks that rut by designing the Ferris Terrace. The thesis is simpledecentralize the static observatory.

This ubiquity of the smart device in today’s age drives the inception of the smart phone application for the [FUN LAB], where ‘subjective fun’ strives to meet sustainable permanence, hence, transforming these devices into gateways to the Digital Dimension that enables the user to not only have fun but also access and interact the performance metrics of the buildings such as the electricity generated by the piezo electric flooring system. As technology evolves, this app will adapt to the new ubiquity!

Technology helps aid the [FUN LAB] to pierce its built threshold and transform not just the Chicago Cultural Center as a location, but the also the entire Millennium Park area into an epicenter of ‘subjective fun’ and urban recreation while reducing the liminality within the urban landscape of Chicago.

Chicago is embracing the Smart City Movement and while Big Data can be frightening, decentralization and ownership of data using blockchain drives the innovation at [FUN LAB].

ILLINI ROWING & COMMUNITY BOATHOUSE

The Project strives to establish one’s connection to and experience with/ around water. To achieve this, various architectures and structures from around the world were studied as cases and a tactile expression was derived and applied.

The project further emphasizes the connection to water (Clinton Lake) by formulating a central axis, the Central Promenade. The Promenade establishes a visual and physical connection from the very beginning and has several important moments sprouting off of it.

There is a secondary axis, the Indoor Street, that is established perpendicular to the Central Promenade that helps organize the interior functions whilst extending the public realm indoors.

The design is manifested through extending the experience to the water via the axis, the boardwalk reminiscent wooden cladding, the row- boat inspired roof forms and railing.

The extended focus of the program to establish the site as a “destination” curates the formation of public courts, gardens, cafe spill-outs and seasonal swimming/ ice skating arena.

“The design strives to establish an experiential connection to water through a tactile, and form driven expression, inspired by idea of docks, boardwalks and boats.” Central Promenade the main porch in the visage of a rowboat to marks the inception of the experience

The Rowing Cafe as an intent serves the tired and hungry athletes after practice while simultaneously being open to the public.

The Rock Climbing Wall helps the Athletes train their upper bodies for competition and can also be used by the Public at other times of the day, just like the Indoor Rowing Tank.

The Indoor Street Atria in the Team Facilities (West) can be used by the students to hangout, take on-line classes between practices and relax while the public can do the same as well.

On the other end of the street (East), is the Hall of Fame and Boat Display for the team that helps the celebration of the team while building a connection with the public.

The Second Level hosts a Bridge Connection across to the Community Boathouse from the Team Facility.

The Team Facility houses the Fitness Center at this level.

The Community Boathouse hosts an Event Space/ Extended Seating for the Cafe.

The Shore of Clinton Lake is designed to maximise ease of access to water. The Illini Cheer Deck and the Boat Launch Deck are organized parallel to the shore to ensure easy boat access and best race views.

The Swimming Area is introduced to make a destination for the community while also allowing for varied cardio for the athletes. In Winters, the shallow depth allows water to freeze and makes a destination for Ice Skating.

The Illini Beacon serves as a Viewing Deck for the public, and a timing tower for the races. SITE

The Central Promenade acts as the spine that connects the public to the water and disperses the visitors to the various functions and activities on site.

The project starts off at the Master plan scale and then narrows down to an Architectural scale.

Borrowing cues from the neighborhood along the 95th Street on the South side of Chicago, there is an inspiration to connect and revitalize the natural and public greens.

with the identification of important neighborhood nodes and functions that help establish new green routes.

is driven by an urban abstraction of the Merian R. Byrnes Natural Trail, integrating in the master plan idea of green revitalization.

The site is sandwiched between the 95th Street and the rail line that is majorly freight.

Important axes are defined at the master plan level

At the site level, the inspiration from the neighborhood is maintained and the organization

After an interactive community workshop, important considerations and community needs were identified that further drove the design.

The phenomenon of rapid urbanization, boosted by globalization is largely evident in South Asian countries such as India and China. Ironically, this ‘growth’ often turns out to be detrimental to the denser pockets of low income areas which as a result end up as gentrified localities with forgotten cultures. Such is the case of Lado Sarai, an urban village in New Delhi, India that currently is under urban renewal by the Delhi Urban Arts Commission (DUAC). The urban village is deemed an ‘urban island’ already cut-off from the city, despite sharing an important location in the city and being located in one of the oldest heritage precincts in the city - Mehrauli.

Didactic Heritage Recreation Magnet

The multi-functional enfilade is designed such that can be used as a - gym, family study, etc. This minimizes the ‘purely’ circulatory spaces.

For the 'Warped CLT Staircase', the designed window openings are made to replicate the concept of "half-cuts" in the CLT sheet in order to achieve the curve.

Union Church Social Extension the facade concept takes inspiration from the old church and the residential context

The Church Extension Project was an exercise in creating a social extension to an old church. The design was expressed using a neo-traditional order and residential details. The concept of a “trinity” is echoed in the design and the material choices reflect a modern take on the church’s materiality and that of the residential context.

My Role: I worked on understanding the traditional details in residential construction and deriving a neo-traditional detail inspired by the historic context. I was also helping with the spatial planning and the facade concept.

The Toyota Dealership Renovation Project located near Chicago one that entailed redoing the interior layout and giving proper face-lift to the old structure.

My Role: I led the design of iterations of the facade and the interiors using the Toyota Design Standard.
