WELCOME LETTER Hello readers Well, 2022 here we are! Welcome to the February/March issue and our first official magazine of the New Year. While we were all hoping for fresh starts and new beginnings it’s unfortunately not looking like it at the moment. Back in the dim and distant past of 2020 when all this craziness first hit we were all pretty confident that the whole thing would be well and truly over by now… but apparently not.

What more can we say other than if we stick together (metaphorically, not literally, as that would be a terrible idea at the minute!) we will get through this, eventually. There are so many wonderful, selfless people in our local community who have gone out of their way to support others at times when their help was most needed and it’s these acts of kindness that make all the difference.

Sometimes it’s a simple thing like a friendly smile or someone doing their job really well that can have a really positive impact. It’s an honour and a privilege to say a special ‘thank you’ to two of those people with our Village and Belper Friendship Blooms bouquets.

As ever, our local businesses rely on you, their local and loyal customers, as they continue to battle through turbulent times. Please do carry on supporting them as much as you can by giving them your business, and they’ll continue to provide you with wonderful goods and reliable services whenever you need them!

Looking on the positive side, springtime is always a lovely time of year and as mornings and evenings become lighter (aided by the clocks ‘springing forward’ by an hour at 1am on Sunday 27th March), we can look forward to spending more time outdoors enjoying the beauty of our local area. The snowdrops, crocuses and daffodils will shortly be peeking through to add some spring colour to our landscape. If you’re keen to get out and about, this issue features a lovely walk from

Belper to Cromford, taking in some stunning countryside views as well as local history, including Belper Mill, Wyver Lane Nature Reserve and Alderwasley before arriving at Cromford Mill. It’s a one-way walk (unless you’re feeling particularly energetic!) so the return journey is by train back to Belper.

There’s also, as always, the opportunity to be one of our prizewinners with a chance to win a takeaway afternoon tea for two from Morley Hayes in our Prize Crossword competition, or a bottle of Champagne in our Champagne Sudoku (and it’s proper Champagne too – as David Dickenson would say, it’s the ‘Real Deal’!). Fliss Goldsmith, Children’s Author Our very own ‘Just a Thought’ writer and local children’s author Fliss Goldsmith is back with her second book, ‘The Diffability Bunch’. We chatted with Fliss to find out more about her books…

Your first book, Erin and Roderick Discover Families, has been out for a year now and has been really popular. What has this positive reception meant to you?

It means the world, the moon and all the stars! When I set out to write my very first book I had one mission and that was to make every child feel visible and valued. 18 months from its release and it is absolutely soul affirming to know that it truly is touching the lives of children across the globe.

I have had emails, messages and even letters from children in Australia, India, America, Canada, South Africa, Nigeria, Dubai, Norway, Pakistan and many more. This book was written to let children know that families can all look and sound different but that one thing binds them together unanimously – LOVE. The book features adopted children, inter-racial families, same sex parents and we bust a few gender stereotypes subtly along the way. It looks to get children and their adults talking and answering questions about the difference they see in others in a kind, accessible and supportive way.

What was the inspiration behind your second book, The Diffability Bunch?

This book leapt into my heart and mind simultaneously when I had a realisation that so many children’s stories are written with an ableist narrative. What I mean is that we talk about dis-ability and therefore we are automatically creating a benchmark for ‘normal’ from which to weigh and measure everything else.

If there is one thing that I am sure of in life it is that normal does not exist! So for me it was time to usualise Diff-ability.

This means looking at everyone’s different abilities and challenges. I do not in any way want to deny disability, rather to celebrate it as part of a person’s whole rather than a definition of their person. I have created a fun and engaging School Sports Day adventure with 6 characters who have various challenges including Down Syndrome, wheelchair use, Autism, Mutism, ADHD, Deafness and a broken leg!

These children are all great at something and make for incredible individuals. They show the reader that when they work together as friends there really is nothing they cannot achieve.

You’ve been working with various charities around the world championing inclusivity, diversity and empowerment. Tell us how that relates to the marvellous but rather drastic new hairstyle you’re rocking…!

Yes indeed! I have been working with the Karachi Down Syndrome Program most recently and the new ‘do’ is due to the fact I pledged to raise £1k for them and, if I managed it, I would shave off my hair! We raised a total of £1225 so the hair is gone! This is an important cause as they are the only provision for children with Down Syndrome and their families in the whole of Pakistan. The country has an estimated 250,000 people with Down Syndrome and yet only one single service, based in Karachi, meaning most people are left unsupported. The centre provides help with development, mental health, well-being, community, education, and an entirely holistic life-long network to ensure people thrive. Their aim is to expand to reach the entire country. I am so thankful for all the donations – my dear neighbour even knitted me a woolly hat too – fabulous!

Just a Thought...

Calm Down!

Have you ever found yourself shouting ‘Calm down!’ knowing full well that whomever you are directing this outlandish order at will not react in the desired way? Has anyone in the history of time ever calmed down when someone barks ‘CALM DOWN’ at them?

It’s a similar situation in television dramas. When the perpetrator is running from the crime scene those in hot pursuit bellow ‘STOP!’ or, ‘COME BACK HERE!’. Can you recall one instance where the criminal halted their dash and slowly walked back towards the police to be placed in handcuffs? Then there are traffic jams and of course it matters not if it is a 5-minute wait or a 10-mile tailback, drivers lean from their window to holler, ‘COME ON!’ I wonder why we do it? Perhaps our energies would be better served in talking to the toddler in

melt-down or ringing for back up for the burglar or perhaps deep breathing for the drivers? Yet we don’t learn, we repeat the same nonsensical behaviours time and again through frustration, fear and impatience. I am guilty as charged and could definitely take a spoon of my own medicinal advice.

So, dear readers, as a collective in our curious fallibility, shall we take the time this spring to own our anger, our irritability and our outbursts? I think that we can do it … and, if you do happen to find yourself lapsing into another futile tirade, just know that I am the angel on your shoulder – screaming ‘STOP IT!’

Life List Gym Etiquette According to the experts, we’re all living longer so it makes sense to stay healthy and keep in shape.

But it takes more than superfoods, mindfulness and Botox to always appear at your best. Before you rush off to your nearest leisure centre and play ‘hunt the parking space’, here are a few pointers for what not to do in the gym.

Avoid giving yourself a round of applause after using each exercise machine. Similarly, no high-fiving yourself or doing the infamous Wimbledon fist-pump.

Don’t get the speed and gradient buttons mixed up on the treadmill; otherwise you’ll be walking very slowly up a mountain for 15 minutes. Also, resist holding a mobile conversation for your entire mechanised stroll.

Please refrain from wearing a baseball cap on the rowing machine, or shouting ‘ahoy’ to whoever’s on the machine next to you.

There’s no need to hum the music from Rocky as you lift the free weights.

Never assume that your sweat prevents the person using the cross-trainer after you from getting dry skin. Clean up your act.

However pooped you feel, halfway through your routine, don’t break for sandwiches and a flask of coffee.

One word for those without hair: headband. (Or maybe that’s just ‘band’.)

Never confuse the bench press with a trouser press. And while we’re on the topic, tiny shorts are for dancing in, not doing squat thrusts. No one needs to see that.

Lastly, don’t head straight to the café afterwards to replenish your carbs. Exercise isn’t a piece of cake.

Fairy Tales or Scary Tales?

Once upon a time, in a land far far away...

Well, in America – a special day was created to honour the fairy tale. National Tell a Fairy Tale Day is celebrated every February 26th in the United States. Let’s join in the fun and read fairy tales too!

My daughter’s favourite is The Emperor’s New Clothes (this particular edition features a striking view of the Emperor’s posterior!). But fairy tales aren’t just for kids.

Fairy tales are short stories designed to enchant the reader.

The fairy tale genre conjures up mythical kingdoms where fairies, elves and goblins roam. We are often introduced to them as children and they spark our imaginations.

- The Gingerbread Man didn’t skip off merrily into the middle distance. He was eaten by a fox! (I think I blanked that one out.)

- Hansel and Gretel... need I say more? This one has haunted me ever since hearing it as a child.

All fairy tales are true escapism. Make yourself a cosy den and grab a comforting mug of hot chocolate. Then, travel off to faraway kingdoms where all the inhabitants live happily ever after.

Sadly, this was not the fate of the Gingerbread Man...

Here are some facts about Fairy Tales: - Fairy tales exist in every culture around the world.

- Grimm’s Fairy Tales is the most famous collection of fairy tales compiled by the Brothers Grimm.

- A fractured fairy tale is based on a traditional story but reimagined to give it a contemporary twist. One great example is Little Red Riding Hood by Roald Dahl.

- Versions of Cinderella appear in many different countries.

The first one was discovered in China around 850 AD. - Earth is also known as the Goldilocks planet. Just like the perfect porridge, it is not too hot and not too cold. This makes it just right to support life.

- The original story of Jack and the Beanstalk didn’t feature a beanstalk at all. This is because giants were thought to inhabit the same world as humans.

- Famous authors Charles Dickens, JRR Tolkien and Terry Pratchett were all fans of fairy tales.

However, it’s not all rainbows and glittery unicorns in the land of fairy tales...

Disney presents a world of songs, romance and happy ever afters. But, historically, fairy tales were much more gruesome. Some disturbing examples are: - The evil queen wanting to eat Snow White’s heart, liver and lungs.

- The Little Mermaid meets a depressing watery death when the prince marries another woman.

- Red Riding Hood got eaten by the wolf. It was designed as a cautionary tale to warn of stranger danger.

- Cinderella’s sisters hacked off bits of their feet to make sure they could fit the Prince’s slipper.

Recipe Meatball Mac and Cheese The ultimate comfort food and the perfect dish for getting ahead and reheating in the oven when needed.

Serves: 6 Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 35 minutes Ingredients: Meatballs 500g pork mince ½ tsp fennel seeds Pinch of smoked paprika Salt and black pepper Olive oil for drizzling Tomato Sauce 1 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, chopped 2 garlic cloves, chopped 1 tbsp tomato puree 900ml passata 1 tsp caster sugar Salt and black pepper Pasta 350g macaroni or other pasta shape 250g mozzarella cheese, grated Nutrition per serving: 555kcal, fat 21g (of which saturates 9.1g), carbohydrates 53g (of which sugars 8.7g), protein 35g, fibre 3.9g

Place the pork mince in a bowl with the fennel seeds and paprika, and season with a little salt and pepper. Mix to combine then divide and shape the mixture into walnut-sized meatballs.

Place the meatballs on a greased baking tray and drizzle with a little olive oil. Bake in the oven for 10-15 minutes until lightly golden.

Turn halfway through cooking.

To make the sauce, heat the olive oil in a large shallow casserole dish and sauté the onion and garlic for 2-3 minutes. Add the tomato puree, passata, sugar and season with salt and black pepper. Simmer gently for 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, cook the pasta in a pan of boiling water according to packet instructions, then drain, reserving some water. Tip the pasta into the tomato sauce with the meatballs. Add a little of the reserved water to thin the sauce if needed.

Scatter over the cheese and place the casserole dish back in the oven for 15-20 minutes, until the cheese has melted and the sauce is bubbling.

Method: Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas mark 6.

Word on Wine Hopefully the cold weather will soon be behind us and we can look forward to the spring. With this in mind, let’s look at a white wine that you may have heard of but possibly do not know much about.

The wine is Pouilly-Fumé from the Loire Valley in central France. This is one of France’s famous wines and has become the signature white wine of the Loire region.

Made using the Sauvignon Blanc grape, it creates a wine with steely minerality from the limestone soils of the region. The wine carries its own special Appellation Pouilly-Fumé Contrôlée given in 1937 which, unlike other wine Appellation Contrôlée, is limited to white wine only. The region encompasses 7 parishes on the right bank of the Loire Valley and, although in Burgundy, the wine remains quintessentially a ‘Loire Valley’ wine.

The name is in two parts, firstly ‘Pouilly’ is an abbreviation for Pouilly-sur-Loire, the village where the wine originated, and ‘Fumé’ is French for smoky, one of the characteristics of the wine.

Before the phylloxera problems of the 1870s, the region’s main grapes were Gamay and Pinot Noir. It was found that by grafting of European vines onto American rootstock, vines that were resilient to the virus could be restored to the region. The grafted Sauvignon Blanc grew better than the previous red varieties, and so it became the region’s most planted grape variety. The 1970s and 80s saw a great rise in the popularity of Pouilly-Fumé. To retain the AOC classification the yields are limited to between 6500 and 7500 litres per hectare with a planting density of 6000 vines per hectare. The 1980s saw a number of producers use oak in the production of the wine, adding more aromatics and texture. It also helped with cellaring of the wines, allowing modern Pouilly-Fumé to improve for between 3 - 6 years.

This wine is from Domaine des Patureaux in Verdigny.

This small, family-owned domain has passed its winemaking knowledge from generation to generation.

The estate benefits from a range of terroirs and, by giving respect to the environment, produces complex wines reflecting the region. As with most French wines the label and online information is very thin.

Beer Adjuncts in Beer Rauchbier, for those that haven’t had the pleasure, is a German-style lager brewed with Rauch (smoked) malt. At one time, smoked beer was commonplace, not unique as it is today.

Historically, the only way to dry malt was directly over an open fire. This process ensured every beer had a smoky shade hanging over each sip.

For maltsters and brewers of the day, it was an unwanted element, one they fought to be rid of.

Many things influenced the final flavour of these malts, including the type of fuel used and how long, and at what temperature, the malt was kilned.

The three main fuels used were wood, straw, and coal. Coal was considered the least favourable because it was expensive and dirty. What fuel was used depended a lot on what area of Europe you were in. While an English maltster might use coal or wood, German brewers would solely use wood.

What can you expect?

For some, this is an acquired taste; the smoke profile can range in strength from only a whisper to quite strong and can have a frazzle, smoky, or woody character to the aroma. Colour can range from a light copper to a dark brown. Head should be tan to cream coloured; rich, thick, and creamy. Clarity should be superb. Expect a medium body with the smoothness of good lager character all carried by moderate to somewhat high carbonation.

Much like the aroma, the taste will bring a profile of malt and smoke in some sort of balance. This balance can vary considerably, but the strength of one should always complement the other. The slightly toasted malty richness of a Marzen should be present. The smoky character can take on a ham- or bacon-like note at higher levels. This is okay, as long as it doesn’t taste greasy. The malt can create a rich, even sweet, palate but the finish should be semi-dry to dry. Often the drying effect is enhanced by the smokiness.

Hop flavour can range from medium to non-existent and bring low spicy, herbal, or floral

notes. Hop bitterness is usually medium and balanced with clean lager fermentation character.

Ideally, the aftertaste is a balance between the malt and smoke.

Good examples of type: Aecht Original Schlenkerla Märzen Smokebeer Considered the classic example in its category, it’s been brewed for centuries in the baroque town of Bamberg in Franconia (Bavaria/Germany).

Following the most ancient malting traditions, all its select barley malts are kilned over a fire of beech wood logs at the Schlenkerla maltings. Brewed in classic copper vessels and matured for months in 14th century cellars.

The lager fermentation and extended cold conditioning in their horizontal tanks rounds out and balances the beer, keeping it crisp, fresh and incredibly drinkable.

First Drive: Ford S-Max What is it?

One exception to the widespread replacement of MPVs with SUVs is Ford, with its S-Max and Galaxy seven-seaters both benefitting from a new hybrid powertrain that aims to keep these models going.

What’s new?

We reckon a seven-seat people carrier has never looked so good.

This latest S-Max Hybrid comes from investment into the brand’s Barcelona plant, with this powertrain also appearing in the new Kuga and Galaxy. It’s an all-new setup for Ford and is currently the only hybrid MPV of its kind.

What’s it like inside?

However, the S-Max is practical, offering a flexible seating arrangement and three rows of seats that lets seven adults sit relatively comfortably. With just two front seats in position, it offers a huge 2,020 litres of boot space.

It kicks out 187bhp, goes from 0-60mph in 9.6 seconds and has a 115mph top speed, though most will choose the Hybrid for the efficiency benefits, with its 147g/km CO2 emissions being 10 per cent lower than the diesel’s.

What’s the spec like?

For the S-Max Hybrid, Ford combines a 2.5-litre Atkinson cycle petrol engine with a 1.1kWh battery and electric motor, with front-wheel drive via a CVT automatic transmission.

Ford claims a fuel economy figure of 44.1mpg but we averaged 50mpg during testing, giving us a 600-plus mile range.

What’s it like to drive?

The S-Max is rather good to drive, feeling more like a hatchback than a big seven-seater through corners, yet at the same time is a comfortable cruiser with a compliant ride.

The hybrid system is also one of the best ‘selfcharging’ setups around and will even run as an EV for short bursts, which helps on efficiency. The CVT gearbox does somewhat sap performance when accelerating, but is largely quite a good fit.

How does it look?

The S-Max isn’t bad-looking. In our test car’s ST-Line trim, it gets large two-tone 18-inch alloy wheels, a

The interior layout is very much ‘old Ford’, with none of the digital dials and minimalist layout in the brand’s most modern models.

The Hybrid is available in the same trio of trims as the standard S-Max – Titanium, ST-Line and Vignale.

Standard equipment is generous with keyless entry, front and rear parking sensors and an eight-inch touchscreen, but ST-Line would be our pick, adding electric and heated front seats and a heated steering wheel. However, only the top-spec Vignale model comes with an electric boot and LED headlights, as well as a reversing camera and massaging leather seats.

Prices start from £36,530 for a Titanium and rise to £41,790 for the Vignale.

Verdict

The Ford S-Max is arguably better to drive and more spacious than many similarly-sized SUVs. The new hybrid powertrain gives the S-Max a further lifeline, and its efficiency will likely impress. Though pricey and not up-to-date inside, it remains one of the better seven-seaters on the market and a brilliant large family car.

Fitness Resolutions

According to research, most people give up on their New Year goals by the fourth Thursday in January. So, how do you keep focused when the initial motivation wanes and life gets in the way?

1. Always set a SMART goal Many fitness resolutions are too vague or over-ambitious.

Saying ‘I want to lose some weight’ or ‘I want to build muscle’ will get you nowhere fast. Instead, set a SMART goal: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound. Try ‘I want to lose 16lb by XX date’ or ‘I want to run 10km by XX date’. Write it down, stick it somewhere you can’t miss it (the fridge, bathroom mirror, or on your phone) and make it a number one priority. Commit to meal plans and treat workouts as important work meetings you can’t miss.

2. Create the right habits Consistency is key and that comes down to building good habits. Regardless of your aim, there are a number of habits that all successful fitness goals follow: - Eat three meals a day, each containing protein and vegetables - Eat a mix of healthy fats daily - Stick to lower-GI carbs, ideally after training and/or before bed - Drink a minimum of three litres of water per day (this is one of the first things I introduce)

3. Hold yourself accountable You’ve set your goals and created good habits, now to stay accountable! You could hire a personal trainer to oversee your progress and help you achieve great results. Or, tell family, friends, or social media followers what you’re trying to achieve. Find a training partner who’s as driven and as motivated as you – you’re less likely to let them down by not showing up to train, even if you’re not in the mood. Or, find a ‘ diet partner’ who is on the same journey as you, or a family member who’s willing to keep you accountable.

4. Set performance goals in the gym Maintain progress towards your fitness resolution with fun and focussed training. Set regular performance goals to work towards, within your wider goal. You can set your ‘15kg in 15 weeks’ weight loss goal, but add micro-goals along the way like ‘bench press 80kg by week 6’ or ‘perform 10 bodyweight pull-ups by week 15’. These small weekly wins will keep you motivated and more likely to push on towards your end goal. You don’t need to be extreme, just consistent.

Footnotes We really do take our feet for granted don’t we? After all, they are only feet aren’t they? Perhaps we should think a little bit more about what these unglamorous parts of the body do for us!

Each foot contains 26 bones – that’s 52 bones between them or, in other words, over a quarter of the body’s 206 bones. The way that these bones work with each other gives approximately 40 joints in each foot! The joint behind the big toe takes approximately one and a half times your bodyweight each and every time you take a step.

Not bad for a joint not much bigger than an Oxo cube.

They give us constant feedback about the surface we are walking on and, thanks to all those bones, joints and untold ligaments and muscles, both in the foot and the lower leg, enable us to walk and balance safely on very uneven ground. Even the toenails have an active role by protecting the toes and helping with balance. The skin is three to four times thicker on the heel and ball of the foot than anywhere else on the body, offering protection to the bones and muscles of the foot in everyday use. We even have a pad of fat under the foot which acts as a natural shock absorber which again protects the underlying tissues.

So, when you force them to work in shoes that aren’t really the right size or shape, or force them to stand on hard floors for hours on end, or walk or run for miles, don’t worry – after all, they are only feet!

A linear walk in the Amber Valley from Belper to Cromford on the fringes of the Peak District, returning via train from Cromford Station back to Belper (please check train times before commencing the route).

The Route 1. Exit the Railway Station/Field Lane car park onto Field Lane. Turn right and walk 200 yards up to the T-junction and then turn left for 150 yards, along Green Lane, passing to your left Joseph, George, and then William Street (named after the sons of the mill owner, Jedediah Strutt) before reaching

another T-Junction. Now turn left onto the beautiful, cobbled Long Row and walk along past the two hundred-year-old two and three-storey cottages which were built to house workers at the local mill during the cradle of the Industrial Revolution.

2. At the end of Long Row cross over the road and head towards the large North Mill keeping it to your right as you cross the bridge over the River Derwent. At this point you can see Belper River Gardens to your right. As the road bends uphill to the left, continue straight on and take the first turning right onto Wyver Lane.

3. Walk along past some lovely cottages to your left, along the road which eventually becomes a track. Although only ten minutes from your starting point you are now into countryside with trees to your left (and bluebells later in the spring) and the river to your right.

You now pass the reed-lined Wyver Lane Pool which is a nature reserve owned by the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust.

During the summer months this is a haven for swifts, swallows and other birds as well as dragonflies and damselflies.

4. As the lane bends off to the right to a nearby farm, continue along a well-worn path towards another farm ahead but, before you reach the farm, the path bends uphill. Follow this until you reach a single lane road. Now turn right and follow the road along, all the time admiring the view just below to your right of fields, trees, river, and the railway line.

As you follow the path (which at first is ever so slightly downhill) you pass under a bridge above which a former railway incline journeyed from the Cromford Canal up, via Black Rocks and the National Stone Centre, to what is now Middleton Top Visitor Centre. This route, however, continues downward to where the track turns into a road with houses either side. Follow this until you get to the bottom where you cross the main A6 road and head through a gap in the wall towards Cromford Mill.

5. As the road meets another going uphill, continue straight ahead into some trees and along a track which turns downhill. Taking the route nearest the river, walk along for about half a mile until reaching some factory buildings. Continue along with the buildings to your left and river to your right until you reach woodland. Here, take the path uphill through the trees and, after a mildly taxing few minutes, reach the top.

6. Continue northward along a path which skirts the trees and fields until the path itself takes you out of the woods and over fields onto the estate of Alderwasley Hall which should be slightly to your right as you follow the path.

7. As the track reaches the road, turn right onto it, through the village for about 300 yards where a footpath to the left is signposted ‘Midshires Way’.

Follow this along its course keeping straight on until the trail leads downhill toward farm buildings at Longway Bank.

8. Cross the track and then continue alongside, then over, a stream which skirts the farm. You now head uphill through a small field towards a woodland then left along a track until you see a sign for a path which takes you through the woods and eventually downhill again to a road.

9. Continue straight across the road along a farm track and keep going past the campsite to your

Cromford Mill is well worth a visit as this is where the mass producing factory system was born, the brainchild of Sir Richard Arkwright, over two hundred years ago.

10. The final half mile of this walk is along the road, with Cromford Mill and neighbouring church to your left. About 150 yards past the mill the road crosses a centuries old bridge and then bends immediately to the right. Follow this road along for another 400 yards until you see signs for Cromford Railway Station to your left.

11. From here a scenic return train journey of less than fifteen minutes follows the canal, river, and road back to Belper.

A Wrose by Any Other Name …

If British towns and villages lived up to their names, you could visit Coat or Matching Tye to buy a new outfit then pop along to Fryup to satisfy your Greedy Gut, before heading to the pub to Guzzle Down a pint of Beer.

You may think these are all places invented by the late Sir Terry Pratchett, but in fact the names mentioned here belong to real villages in Devon, Essex, Norfolk, Somerset and Yorkshire.

The UK’s roads are littered with signposts pointing out destinations that sound funny, rude or – let’s face it – utterly weird. But if you’ve ever wondered why the original residents chose to burden their home town or village with such a name, the answer is, they probably didn’t. Since the name first appeared hundreds or even thousands of years ago, it will have undergone a gradual transformation, being mispronounced or added to by each new group of settlers.

Location, location, location

Our place names originally combined different pieces of information, including the geographical characteristics of the land, residents’ names or occupations and the religion they followed.

The Anglo Saxons were practical in their approach to naming, describing geographical features or the size or type of settlement a traveller could expect to find. The Dorset village of Scratchy Bottom (voted second in a 2012 poll to discover Britain’s worst place name) refers to a hollow place in the landscape where the soil is rough, while the modern city name Birmingham is made up of three different elements: the given name Beorma, the word ‘inga’ (meaning family or tribe) and ‘ham’, meaning homestead.

The Normans, who invaded in 1066, were known to rename places to suit their own tastes. For example a village in Essex known as Fulepet (‘foul pit’ in Anglo Saxon) was renamed as Beaumont (‘fair hill’), while Beaulieu (‘fine place’) in Hampshire was given its name by a Norman French landowner who loved the local landscape.

Gods and saints

Our town and village names also reflect the country’s religious history, acknowledging the worship of pagan gods and goddesses as well as Christian saints. The war god Woden is reflected in the name Wednesfield (West Midlands) and Wodnesfeld (Essex), while Thursley in Sussex was originally a sacred spot for the worship of the god Thunor (the name means ‘Thunor’s Grove’).

Throughout the UK you’ll also find ancient villages linked to church names. This often occurs when a settlement becomes large enough to warrant the development of a second church. The village is then divided by its church name, for example, Chalfont St Giles and Chalfont St Peter.

Residents in oddly-named places probably learn to put up with outsiders poking fun, but for some the teasing can get a little too much. In 2012 the town of Staines – much derided by Sacha Baron-Cohen’s comic invention Ali G – voted to change its name to ‘Staines-upon-Thames’ in an effort to improve its image. So why don’t residents of our more oddly titled towns and villages do the same?

We can only conclude that they love their quirky designations and don’t want to alter them. After all, these colourful names provide an insight into the earliest origins of our cities, towns and villages and it would be a sad day for all of us if they disappeared.

Gardening Toxic Plants Things to avoid in the garden We all know that gardens are good for us, but a few plants are extremely poisonous and, in very rare cases, can even cause death. Be aware of potential hazards when choosing plants and be cautious when visiting other people’s outdoor spaces and when out and about enjoying nature. It’s particularly important to ensure that anything touched by toddlers, small children and even pets, is as safe as possible.

Some of the most poisonous plants in the UK: • Monkshood (Aconitum napellus, also known as wolfsbane) It is a tall plant that produces beautiful purple-blue flowers in summer. They look rather like a monk’s habit, hence the common name. Despite the fact that touching the leaves and then eating even a small part, or allowing entry of the plant via an open wound, can lead to fatal poisoning, this plant is widely available for planting within gardens. It doesn’t always come with a warning.

• The death-cap mushroom (Amanita phalliodes) This is a fairly common fungus here in the UK, growing in mixed deciduous woods, particularly under oak and beech trees. It’s quite a large mushroom, growing up to 15cm across with a domed, white cap.

It looks similar to several edible mushrooms but is deadly poisonous. Some call it the silent assassin and only a small amount can result in death. It contains a toxin for which there is no known cure.

• Hemlock (Conium maculatum) A highly poisonous flowering plant that is a member

of the carrot family. It has a rather attractive umbel flower and purple spots on the green stems. It’s common in the UK, growing by hedges, ditches and woodland edges. All parts of the plant are toxic because of a fast-acting poison called cicutoxin.

This causes stomach upsets and even paralysis of the lungs. The Greek philosopher, Socrates, was said to have died after being poisoned by tea made from this plant.

• Deadly nightshade (Atropa belladonna) This is obviously poisonous – the clue is in the common name! It’s actually the fruits that are the biggest problem on this tall, bushy plant that likes shady and wooded areas. It produces bell-shaped flowers in early summer followed by black berries that can grow to the size of cherries. They look tempting to eat but contain the toxins atropine and scopolamine, which cause paralysis to organs, including the heart. It’s a potential killer in severe cases.

• Giant hogweed (Heracleum mantegazzianum) This has rightly earned a reputation for being one of Britain’s most dangerous plants. It probably won’t kill, but it burns severely due to its toxic sap, which reacts with human skin and sunlight. It’s a huge beast, growing up to 4.5 metres tall, with umbrella-shaped white flower clusters (pictured above).

• Foxgloves Even the common foxglove is poisonous, if consumed.

They contain digitalis and other chemicals that affect the heart. The pretty, bell-shaped, tubular flowers are just the right size for little fingers, so you won’t want these transferred into the mouth.

Parenting Small Steps to Make a Big Impact It’s not always easy to be eco-friendly, but there are ways you can work together as a family to lead a greener life.

Discuss the issues Talk to your family about what you want to achieve and why. You might be surprised at what they come up with. After watching ‘War on Plastic with Hugh and Anita’, my children announced they were giving up jelly pots and other plastic-wrapped snacks.

Can you commit to walking or cycling to school rather than going in the car? Can you all agree to use reusable water bottles rather than buying drinks while you’re out?

Recycle Make recycling easier by labelling your bins so it’s clear what goes in each one. Print pictures to stick on the lids if you have young children. Short on space? Ikea sell space-saving stackable storage bins.

Crisp packets, biscuit wrappers, toothbrushes, contact lens packaging and baby food pouches usually aren’t collected by the council, but they can be recycled by TerraCycle.

Get crafty Most children love crafts, so why not look at a few eco-projects? You could make beeswax wraps together (an alternative to cling film) or soy candles to give as gifts. My children decorated some organic tote bags (£1 each on eBay) to donate to the local shop for customers to borrow.

Go wild Cut down on the weeding and do your bit for insects by letting an area of your garden go wild.

Encourage birds by hanging up some bird feeders and bird boxes, or planting large shrubs or a hedge for them to nest in. Don’t have a garden? Search the RHS website for pollinator-friendly plants for pots and window boxes.

Reuse Try to reuse before buying new. You could melt wax crayons down in silicone cake moulds to make new chunky crayons for example. Kids desperate for plastic toys? Buy them second-hand on eBay or Facebook Marketplace.

Take action Get your kids involved in campaigning! You could encourage them to write to your MP or send letters to ask favourite brands to reduce plastic waste.

You could even take part in family-friendly climate marches together.

Make the switch Some of the things that make the most difference actually take the least amount of work. Switching to a renewable energy supplier or tariff only takes a few minutes. Most green energy companies have excellent customer service ratings and sometimes work out cheaper than the larger companies.

Move your money Banks often use your savings and loan repayments to invest in companies you may not want to support.

It’s easy to move your family’s money to a more ethical provider. Charity Bank, Triodos and Ecology Building Society all offer a range of ethical investment opportunities and savings accounts. Want to stick to a high street bank? The Co-operative Bank has a strict ethical policy that sets out what it won’t invest your money in.

Time Is of the Essence…

Time. It’s a strange thing. It’s an entirely constant and linear concept and yet, it often feels anything but. A second, a minute, hour, week, year… they’re always the same length but time can sometimes feel like it flies by, while on other occasions it drags. When you’ve got a baby with colic, every minute feels like a week (oh, I don’t miss those days – anyone in that stage, you have my heartfelt sympathies!).

We can spend time, or we can waste time.

Apparently twice a year we can change it, but only by an hour and only in the specified direction. We can even gain time or lose it, by travelling east or west, but we can’t alter it on a whim and, despite the best efforts of Doc Brown in Back to the Future, we can’t get it back once it’s gone.

There are periods of your child’s life that seem to go on forever. I’ve already mentioned the colicky stage, that’s particularly long and arduous.

Likewise the sleepless nights, the time while you’re waiting to once again enjoy a glorious night of uninterrupted sleep (which, depending how lucky or unlucky you are can last for weeks, months or even years!). But then, suddenly, you look at what was your teeny tiny baby and, before your very eyes, they’ve become a fully-grown human! Ok, it doesn’t happen quite as quickly as it did for Tom Hanks in Big, but nevertheless there’s somehow an accumulation of all the slow bits and the fast bits, and overall their childhood goes by in a flash.

Before you know it you’re helping them prepare to make their way out into the big, wide world. It was surely only a couple of years ago that we were looking round preschools … how are we suddenly talking universities?!

The pandemic seems to have robbed us of some of this precious time and, with no frame of reference built around the things we did and the places we’ve been, it’s hard to remember what’s happened when.

I don’t need to remind anyone how turbulent this last couple of years have been and how many plans have been cancelled, rescheduled, re-cancelled…

While this whole experience has been difficult for adults and there are things we’ve missed out on, we have in many instances had the chance to rearrange them – like weddings, parties, or holidays.

Postponing is frustrating, but hopefully they’ll happen eventually. However, in a child’s life there are certain things that have to happen at the right time, in the right order. If they’re missed, there’s sometimes no opportunity to go back and do them again. From babies not being introduced to wider family, to toddlers missing out on socialising with other little ones their age at baby and toddler groups, or teenagers missing school proms, graduations or the chance to have a gap year abroad – once these opportunities are gone, they’re gone for good. That last school play they never got to do, that sporting event they trained for but are now too old to participate in, the exams they’ll never sit; these things are now lost to the ether.

But… there was another side to lockdown.

It did afford us some time together at home, moments we would never have had otherwise.

Some calmness, stillness, some uninterrupted family time in what can otherwise be a non-stop cycle of doing things and going places with barely a minute to catch your breath. The times we lost were also gained in other ways.

So this year, I’m going to try and look differently at time. I don’t mean buying a new watch … I mean focusing on the here and now and not worrying too much about the passage of time, moments lost, plans for the future and things we may or may not be able to do. Because time, as they say, waits for no man (or woman … and certainly no child!).

PC Tips from your ‘Local’ Computer Tutor Gmail and Outlook A customer called who was having difficulty opening Microsoft Outlook where they collect their Gmail emails. Outlook was asking for their password, which hadn’t changed, and then rejecting the password.

After checking their Gmail account online, I found that during the last week, they had been prompted to update to 2-step verification for security. It seems that the last email received from google hadn’t been verified; leaving opening outlook impossible.

To rectify this, within the online Gmail account settings, I switched off the 2-step verification.

When I return, I will switch it back on and ensure the change is verified to enable Outlook to work with the changes made.

Animal Tales Dolly the Sheep: Who’s Cloning Now? Do you remember Dolly the Sheep? It’s now over twenty-five years since the world-famous ruminant became the first mammal to be created by cloning, a scientific process designed to generate a genetically identical copy of an animal.

What’s involved in cloning?

The process starts with cultured cells taken from the animal that is to be cloned. Scientists then remove fertilised eggs from the fallopian tubes of another, unrelated, animal. The next step is to suck out the fertilised nucleus using a thin needle, or by treating the egg with ultraviolet light.

What is left is essentially a ‘blank slate’, which is filled with the cells from the target animal. In a final twist reminiscent of those old Frankenstein movies, the egg is hit with a blast of electricity that fuses the host and the inserted cells together and jump-starts cell division.

If the process is successful and the cells begin to multiply, the next stage is to surgically implant the modified egg into a surrogate mother animal, which is then treated with hormones to ensure the pregnancy remains stable.

Who clones their pets?

The huge costs involved in creating a genetic copy of an animal tend to make pet cloning the preserve of the very wealthy.

A few years ago the singer Barbra Streisand caused shockwaves when she announced that she had cloned her recently deceased dog Samantha. In 2016 fashion designer Diane Von Furstenberg paid $100,000 (£75,700) for a clone of her Jack Russell dog and music producer Simon Cowell told a tabloid newspaper that he intends to clone his beloved dogs Squiddly, Diddly and Freddy.

Pet lovers have also been keen to clone their cats.

The first commercially produced cat clone was ‘Little

Nicky’, born in 2004. The cat’s owner, a woman from Texas named Julie, refused to disclose her surname after paying $50,000 for the service.

The pros and cons of cloning It’s easy to understand why owners might want to clone a much-loved family pet after years of companionship, but anti-cloning campaigners point out that creating just one clone can lead to unnecessary suffering for the other animals involved.

During the cloning process these animals are subject to repeated invasive procedures in order to harvest and transplant the eggs, and not all attempts end in success. During a recent attempt to clone a pet cat in China, forty cloned embryos were implanted into four surrogate mother cats. These implants produced three pregnancies, two of which ended in miscarriages.

There’s clearly a conflict between owners’ expectations of a happy ‘reunion’ with a near-identical copy of their pet and the views of animal rights campaigners, who say that it’s unacceptable to exploit animals for pet cloning.

In the end it seems that the commercial drive to make money is likely to win out over any scruples we may have about animal welfare. A newspaper interview with Wang Chuduan, a professor at the China Agricultural University in Beijing, sums the situation up neatly. Short Story Shubunkin Steve “I started emailing this gentleman who advertised in the lonely hearts column of Tropical Fish Keeping Monthly.” Nicola loved to regale Pauline with tales of her love life during their weekly meetup. “I’d been skimming through it in the dentist’s waiting room.”

“He’s a menace,” Pauline hissed, though privately agreeing that some of Nicola’s gnomes were a little risqué for a front garden. “Isn’t he married?”

Pauline had heard it all before. Nicola was an incurable romantic who enjoyed the thrill of the chase.

“He said he was a shy, private man and that previous lady friends had tried to coax him out of his shell too quickly.” She raised an eyebrow. “He said he was looking for a special someone he could share his love of aquariums with, and signed his emails ‘Shubunkin Steve’.”

“Precisely,” Nicola nodded. “I stood up, in full view of everyone, pointed at him and said, ‘Does your wife know you’re here?’”

“But you don’t know anything about tropical fish,” Pauline interrupted.

“The cheek!” Pauline tutted.

“I’ve got my water feature on the front lawn,” Nicola protested. “And I’ve read that magazine now, so I’m all clued up. Anyway, I arranged to meet him here, in this cafe, last Saturday afternoon.”

“He actually turned up?” said Pauline.

“Got there early, had a glance around.” Nicola refused to be rushed. “There were half a dozen single blokes here that day, but none of them looked like they were waiting for someone, so I thought I’ll just wait and see who comes in.”

“Did he tell you how you could spot him?” Pauline asked.

“He said he’d have a copy of ‘our’ magazine.”

Nicola shrugged coyly. “So here I was, sipping my mochaccino, and who should walk in with something folded under his arm?”

“Who?” Pauline asked impatiently.

“That chap who’s forever walking up my road talking really loudly on his mobile phone.” Nicola leaned forward. “The one who complained about my gnomes to the council.”

“Good for you.” Pauline was enjoying the story.

“So what did he do?”

“He just looked at me.” Nicola shrugged.

“Said yes, I’ve come to fetch her a tuna panini.”

“I know,” Nicola nodded. “I said what’s that under your arm then?”

“And?” “He said it’s a bag for life.” Nicola rolled her eyes.

“Then he said aren’t you that woman from our street who likes little semi-naked men arranged all round her pond?”

“No!” “I said yes, what of it?” Nicola nodded triumphantly.

“Going to go crying to the council again?”

“Did the real Shubunkin Steve ever turn up?”

Pauline asked.

“I couldn’t say for certain, but a little chap suddenly shot out the door with a magazine stuffed up his coat,” sighed Nicola.

“Must have scared him off. He did say he’s shy,” Pauline said. “So it was all a waste of your time.”

“Not in the slightest.” Nicola winked. “Suddenly all the other blokes in the cafe were desperate to buy me a coffee.”

Green One Pound Meals Miguel Barclay Cooking on a budget really isn’t easy, but Miguel Barclay’s One Pound Meals series takes some of the headache out of meal preparation. The latest in the series focuses on planet-friendly dishes. As you’d expect, there are plenty of vegetarian and vegan meals, from cauliflower cups to courgette kofte, but there are also lots of dishes to tempt staunch meat eaters too. Plus, you’ll get tips on eco-conscious shopping and minimising food waste.

Under the Olive Tree Irini Tzortzoglou In the depths of winter, Irini’s recipes will transport you to sun-filled summer holidays.

The first half of the book is dedicated to simpler midweek Greek meals. The second half is full of showstoppers to wow friends and family. Expect everything from moussaka, braised octopus, and baklava to chickpea fritters.

You’ll also read about Irini’s family and where her love for good, honest ingredients and home cooking comes from.

Love to Cook Mary Berry Lost your love for cooking?

This TV series tie-in might help to bring it back. It features 120 recipes from one of the UK’s favourite cooks. The focus is on no-fuss recipes to ‘bring happiness into your kitchen’. You’ll find simple stir fries, easy curries, warming casseroles and plenty of mouth-watering puddings.

Many of the dishes can be prepared the day before or frozen.

Pinch of Nom Comfort Food Kay Featherstone and Kate Allinson ‘Comforting’ and ‘diet’ are two words that don’t usually go together. The Pinch of Nom team is trying to prove that you can enjoy flavoursome, satisfying meals even when you’re aiming to lose weight. Recipes include cheesy aubergine bake, slow-cooker stroganoff, and halloumi couscous burgers, along with plenty of indulgent desserts. There are 100 recipes altogether.

More than 40 are vegetarian and 47 are gluten-free.

Nadiya’s Fast Flavours Nadiya Hussain Don’t be deceived by the name – most of these recipes aren’t exactly speedy.

However, most require under 30 minutes of hands-on time and a fair few can be whipped up for a quick midweek meal.

There are twists on classics such as macaroni cheese, along with unique flavour combinations that are sure to please if you’re bored to tears with everyday meals. Think honey-baked sriracha drumsticks, coffee-glazed focaccia, and banana-skin bagels.

Family Comforts Rebecca Wilson Fed up of cooking two different meals most nights?

Not only are all these recipes child- and adult-friendly, each one can be adapted for vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free diets. You’ll find plenty of easy midweek meals, along with hands-off slow-cooker dishes, weekend meals and puddings. While they’re designed to appeal to kids, there are also big flavours to keep the grown-ups happy. Think mild curries, lemon and garlic chicken, and loaded Mexican sweet potatoes. Each recipe is nutritionist approved and there are extra tips on weaning, batch cooking and food preparation.

Local History Belper People of the Past: Belper Fair

When I moved to Belper in the 1990s I noticed show men and women living in their caravans over the winter on The Coppice. Then, one year they disappeared and bought a permanent site at Selston where they could stay as long as they wished. I was sorry they had abandoned Belper but could see the advantages of owning their own land.

But of course they never abandoned Belper! I have just learned a lot from reading Neil Calladine’s new book on the history of our fair. I now know that the fair is inextricably connected to the town. It has been coming to Belper for hundreds of years and show people have lived here, worked, married, fought in two world wars, kept pubs, brought up their children, grown old, are buried in Belper cemetery and their descendants still live here. This book challenges the idea that show people are forever on the move.

I had already got to know some of the Hall family through researching their graves in Belper Cemetery and their history is described in some detail in the book. Members of the family were at different times landlords of The Nags Head, The Grapes and The Maltsters (which disappeared when Nottingham Road housing made way for the Deb factory). In the nineteenth century we often find show men describing themselves as ‘confectioner’ to Census enumerators. William Hall (born in 1844) made brandy snap at premises behind the Maltsters public house and gingerbread was another popular item made for sale at the fair.

The Proctors are equally important in the history of Belper’s fair. The family started off with a circus; at the turn of the nineteenth century members of the Proctor family were tight rope dancers, wire walkers and horse riders. Linked by marriage to the Hall family, the two families were close and worked together in fairs around the Midlands. Proctor graves can also be found in Belper cemetery and to this day John Proctor is the lessee of Belper fair.

Belper was also a busy place for building and repairing fairground rides and wagons. The lovely photo on the left shows a little girl perched on a living wagon built by the joiner William Watson who had a workshop on High Street. Fairground equipment was also built and repaired in premises behind Colledge’s furniture shop.

There are many more fascinating photos, including some of the rides and shows with names such as ‘Sea on Land’, ‘Peacocks’, ‘Dragon Scenic’, ‘Collins Gallopers’, ‘Razzle Dazzle’, ‘Laughter Land’ and ‘Waxworks’. Another interesting aspect of Belper’s history is an account of how the Market Place and Coppice, owned by the Lord of the Manor since medieval times, eventually came into the public ownership of the Town Council.

Upbeat: StreetSafe If you feel unsafe in a certain area of your community, Derbyshire Constabulary is encouraging you to report it via a new function on their website.

The data will be collected to enable Police and Crime Commissioners to prioritise resources, commission the right services to make people safer (and feel safer) and undertake effective partnership work to combat risk in the future.

An online tool enabling people to pinpoint public spaces where they feel most at risk of crime has been launched by the Home Office. StreetSafe is part of the Government’s strategy to tackle violence against women and girls.

Effective policing relies on intelligence from the public to help plan and prioritise resources and we urge people to report where and why they feel unsafe.

Residents are invited to map specific locations that have made them feel unsafe and explain why – regardless of whether a crime has occurred.

Derbyshire Constabulary’s Chief Constable Rachel Swann said: “As national gender lead, the safety of women and girls is of high priority to me and to Derbyshire Constabulary.

Reports will then be looked at and sent to the agency which is best placed to deal with each issue, for example badly lit areas would be passed to the local authority for the attention of their street lighting team.

“Street Safe will help to inform us where women and girls feel unsafe and why. We can then use this information to work in partnership with other agencies to identify problem areas and utilise local knowledge to tackle issues and improve public spaces.”

Please note you should still use the usual methods to report a crime, but use StreetSafe to tell police how an area’s safety could be improved.

Bereavement Matters This year marks 30 years since Gillotts, the company my father-in-law Jack Gillott set up, moved into our current premises in Abbott Street.

At the time they were newly built and somewhat ahead of their time, which was fitting for Gillotts because, thanks to Jack’s vision, we’d previously become one of the first funeral homes in the area to introduce a chapel of rest to its premises in the 1960s.

No-one else did that back then because families usually kept their loved ones with them at their homes until the day of their funeral.

The rest of the industry had caught up with this by 1992, but the new premises saw the company break new ground by replacing the previous set-up which saw me or Jack meeting families in the front room of the house on site, in which he also lived.

It’s remarkable to think that’s how we operated, just as it’s remarkable to consider that the old premises also had a

joinery workshop in which my father-in-law used to build the coffins himself, something which is also now very rare.

So much has changed in the past three decades and once where there was only one branch of Gillotts, there are now five, following the merger of Gillotts with Eastwood & District Funeral Service in 1991 and the decision to spread the name across the whole group.

I’m sure Jack would be very proud of that, as well as the way in which we’re continuing to offer new features or facilities that benefit our customers and the public and the wider communities we serve, since they are the ones to whom our funeral homes and the buildings really belong.

This progress will continue next year when Gillotts will extend its Eastwood office into a neighbouring police station with plans that are ambitious, forward-thinking and, just like our Heanor premises, ahead of their time.
