Illegal Private Colleges busted

Lerato Jiyane

Student city... Braamfontein which is known for housing many private colleges THE Department of Higher Education and Training is tightening the grip on private colleges offering unaccredited and unregistered courses. An on-going blitz operation has uncovered legitimate institutions, but offering programmes that will be a complete waste of time and money. Popular advertising spots are now also being targeted. Another institution caught red handed as thousands of hopeful school leavers battle for placement to further their studies is the Institute of Health and Social Care Studies in Braamfontein. The institution is advertising and offering qualifications, while it is not accredited with the health and welfare Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA). At first, the principal took a shot at justification claiming

he is still awaiting the required go-ahead. “Before you ask any questions, you can call the SETA, the letter is ready for collection for the programmes. However, a quick call by authorities proved otherwise. Another college that was busted, the Victory Training College. Its accreditation with quality assurer Umalusi lapsed two years ago. An official at the college was forced to take down the registration certificate with the Department of Higher Education, leaving students destitute. More than 42 000 commuters pass through the local taxi rank daily where flyers of colleges are in sight. The taxi association has pulled the plug on all flyers. Joint operations continue.

Three children perish in shack fire

The remains of the burnt shack. Picture by Sowetourban.sites.caxton.co.za A community member in Snake Park, where three young children were killed in a shack fire, has described scenes of chaos and loud screams from the mother as they frantically tried to extinguish the blaze. It’s not clear what sparked the fire in Soweto and emergency services officials are now investigating. The children’s parents sustained burns follow-

ing the incident. The smell of smoke hung in the air and charred remains of the shack were strewn across the floor. Ezekiel Kapo, a neighbour whose shack was also razed, says he heard loud screams coming from outside at around 2am on Wednesday. “As they screamed, I woke up, because they were calling my name. I woke up and went towards their door. When I arrived there

they were struggling to open the door.” Kapo says he tried to douse the flames with water. “I went in and then went back to my shack to collect a bucket of water, then I splashed the water but the fire got bigger.” Five-year-old Kamogelo Mokoena, his three-year-old sister Boitumelo and their 11-month-old younger sister Kutlwano all died in the blaze.-www.ewn.co.za

Vigus takes the vibrant bakkie market by storm

THE Chinese car manufacturer, the Jiangling Motor Company (JMC) is seriously making inroads in the international market, South Africa include, WRITES NAKAMPE LEKWADU JMC’s latest offering in the market, the all new Vigus double cab bakkies is one good example that the company is making their intensions to seriously compete in the motoring industry while at the same time proving their critics wrong whose mentality was that the Chinese cars were not of good quality. With an unbelievable less than R380 000 in price, this is a bargain for the new top of the range JMC Vigus that is made for both work and luxury and not forgetting the fact that it also provide the same comfort as other manufactures’ double cabs which are however charging bit more in price. As the saying goes: ‘The strength of a crocodile is in the water.” so it was the case with the Vigus after we decided to challenge its strength on a long trip to Limpopo’s capital city, Polokwane. My doubt about this machine were proved wrong as its workhorse was amazing in terms of performance on the road. We zigzagged and negotiated our way on one of the country’s busiest road, the N1 to the north, and from my experience on this car I can say without mincing my words that other manufactures have a reason to raise their eye-brows by the threat posed by this stylish and eye-catching sleek design and its spacious Vigus which its front and back offers everything that one need in a double cab. With its outstanding 2.4 turbo diesel motor with

quick and responsive acceleration and braking power designed and engineered to impress. The comfort inside the car is so amazing, from its well-crafted leather seats that comes with the Manual Four-direction Adjustable Seats (front and back / backrest adjustable) and the multifunctional steering wheel which you can do almost everything from juggling between music system to indication just made the trip very short and easy one. As for safety, the JMC Vigus comes with sufficient basic safety equipment such as ABS, EBD and two front airbags. All come standard with 16 inch wheels, front and rear fog-lights, rear parking sensors, air conditioning and a CD player with USB input while the SLX trim level comes with leather upholstery, a DVD player, multifunctional steering wheel and an anti-glare rear-view mirror. As for the 4x4 variants exclusively feature flared wheel arches and side steps. With all the luxuries and comfort that comes with the all new JMC Vigus, there is no doubt that those critics who gave the Chinese motor manufactures’ models a bad reception which ranged from cold to scorn, with very appreciation seeping through in between with finally eat a humble pie with shame if not swallowing their own pride. The Vigus which now comes with R25 000 discount that can be used for Trade in assistance, deposit or accessories is available on both petrol and diesel with a three years/100 000km warranty and a five years/60 000 km service plan.

The Proteas, KFC Mini Cricket Kids play under rains NOT even rain could stop the Proteas from playing the KFC Mini-Cricket kids from Fleur Primary School in their curtain raiser to the KFC T20 international between South Africa and Sri Lanka. The KFC Mini-Cricket Kids and Proteas were ready to play the second encounter in this season’s KFC Mini-Cricket Kids vs Proteas Tour when bad weather resulted in the game being moved from the field at SuperSport Park Centurion to the indoor nets. This did not dampen the kid’s enthusiasm, instead it drove the kids to raise their game and play out of their skins in an attempt to beat the Proteas. The Proteas won the toss and decided to bat. The Proteas got off to a slow start with Reeza Hendricks and Heino Khun thanks to two very good overs from Vanya van Wyngaardt and, player of the match, Inam Mayekiso. Heino was run out once and caught by Palesa Ditsibane in Vanya’s over. Meanwhile Reeza was caught once off Inam’s over. The Proteas only scored 10 runs in the opening partnership and they knew that they would have to improve. Meanwhile the KFC Mini-Cricket Kids were very happy with the extra fielding session that Neil McKenzie gave them on Wednesday because the Proteas could not find many gaps in the field. Tabriz Shamzi and Proteas women’s player, Thabisa Nkosi, came in next and even though the bowling was not quite as good as in the first two overs they battled to score runs due to some brilliant fielding. Timothy Sunnasy, from Fleur Primary, got lucky when Tabriz went for a second run off a miss-field and was run out by some amazing out fielding. The last batting pair for the Proteas

was Dean Elgar and Dane Patterson. Dane was not going to be showed up by his more famous batting partner and hit some powerful shots. In the final over Dean and Dane scored 9 runs, helped by a couple of sneaky 2s, which got the Proteas total to 51. No one knew if that was good enough because this was the first time that we have played a KFC Mini-Cricket Kids vs Proteas Tour match indoors. The KFC Mini-Cricket Kids got off to a quick start by taking quick ones and twos and often caught the Proteas off-guard. The opening partnership was also helped by some very clever batting. The

KFC Mini-Cricket kids managed to find a couple of unlikely gaps in the field. The Proteas soon realised that the kids were up for the game and had to pick up their game. The Kids soon learned that the Proteas were not only great players but they are great people and very good sportsmen and women. The kids loved playing against him and shared many laughs. In the end the Proteas were just too good for the kids and they managed to win the game by 4 runs. The player of the match was Inam Mayekiso for her all round performance including two wickets and 12 runs off her bat.

PSL amend the Absa Premiership Fixtures THE Premier Soccer League has confirmed an amended fixture list for the remainder of the 2016/17 Absa Premiership season. The amended version includes the fixtures that were either postponed or abandoned in the first half of the league (period: August- December 2016). The 2016/17 season has been an extremely challenging season to manage for the League. It has been necessary to take into account external factors such as the Olympic Games, the Africa Cup of Nations, and the impact that Mamelodi Sundowns achievements had on our programme. The amended fixture list also accommodates the four South African clubs participating in the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederations Cup. Unfortunately the League has had to make provision for the possible need for further amendments in the month of April/May 2017. The nature of these changes (if any) will, to a large extent, be determined by how our four clubs participating in CAF competitions perform in the initial stages of their respective competitions. The League has also, with the consent of SAFA, and with a view to address outstanding matches, scheduled the first Absa Premiership fixture in

2017 for Friday, 03 February 2016. The league fixtures are expected to resume on February 3 with BidVest Wits welcoming Orlando Pirates Emrites Airline Park (Ellis Park) with four more matches taking place on February 7.
