Foreigners are not the city of Joburg’s responsibility THE City of Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba says they’re building housing for South Africans. The mayor says that local government will fast track its programme to develop affordable high-rise buildings for citizens. “I will do everything possible to provide accommodation. But the City of Johannesburg will only provide accommodation to South Africans. Foreigners, whether legal or illegal, are not the responsibility of the city. I run the municipality. I don’t run national government.” Mashaba has called on human rights and international organisations to donate funds if they want the City to provide accommodation to foreigners. He adds: “I’m not going to allow the slum lords to

be part of this. A minimum of 80% of the people in the hijacked buildings are foreign nationals. I will do everything possible to provide accommodation, but the City of Johannesburg will only provide accommodation for South Africans.” This comes after residents hijacked a building in

the inner city on Jeppe Street. They have since been evicted by the Red Ants The mayor says he won’t allow dilapidated buildings to be hijacked. Two weeks ago, seven people died when a similar building caught fire in the same street. Mashaba adds that the city will do everything to provide housing to South Africans. “When I inherited the municipality, I discovered a crisis where buildings had been hijacked. It’s still a mystery to me why we allowed the breakdown of law to happen under our watch. At least 300,000 people are looking for houses in our city today. And I’m sitting with a list where 152,000 people expect me, as the executive mayor, to provide accommodation. “-www.ewn.co.za

July 2017 THE month of July was a sad one after the passing away of country’s two legends in their own categories. First it was Jazz musician, Ray Phiri and lately Ronnie Mamoepa who has served this country as spokesperson for a number of cabinet ministers, including deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa. May the Souls of these fallen heroes Rest in Peace. Next month mark Women’s Month and we are looking for-

ward to celebrate with them. In the football fraternity, we regret the passing away of two fans at the FNB Stadium in a stampede during the Carling Black Label Cup involving Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirate. We also looking forward for the new Absa Premiership Season which will be starting in few weeks for the 2017/18 Season

City’s Expanded Social Package needs you, MMC tells residents

THE City of Johannesburg’s Member of the Mayoral Committee for Health and Social Development, Dr Mpho Phalatse, visited Coronationville, Brixton, Cathrada Park and Westbury in Region B this week to encourage indigent residents to register on its improved Expanded Social Package (ESP). Also known as Siyasizana, the redesigned programme was launched at the Jabulani Civic Centre in Soweto in Region D on June 11 to provide improved and muchneeded relief to the city’s indigent and vulnerable households. The City has since rolled out its awareness campaign to areas in Region C and now Region B to ensure that as many people as possible are covered by the safety net. The move speaks to the City’s pro-poor agenda being championed by Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba. During Monday’s roadshow, MMC Phalatse told residents that ESP was aimed at vulnerable people such as the unemployed, youth, people with disabilities, displaced people, senior citizens, women and children. “If you consider the fact that we have a population of around 5 million in the city and currently have just over 300 000 people on the register, it doesn’t add up. We’re now reaching out to communities to educate them about the programme,” Cllr Phalatse said. “We’re creating awareness and going into communities, loud-hailing and distributing the pamphlets, telling people how they can access ESP and how it will benefit them. The idea is to cover the entire City and give everyone an opportunity to register. “In the past, registrations were only done through Revenue Customer Service centres. We’ve now realised it was not adequate because the centres often had challenges to administer the registrations.” Phalatse also said in the near future residents would also be able to access it at clinics. She said people with different levels of need would

qualify for different levels of subsidy in line with the City’s measure of poverty. Benefits range from free basic water, free basic electricity, rebates on property rates and taxes and rebates on waste removal. “What we’re doing now we’re cleaning up the database because in the past people did not have to produce any proof to qualify for the programme. When we capture you on our system it will automatically place you in one of our three bands,” MMC Phalatse said. Band 1 is aimed at those on the borderline of poverty, Band 2 is for those who earn formal income but whose earnings fall below the survival level and Band 3 is for people living in the most-deprived conditions. To qualify for the ESP, residents must be South African citizens, reside within the boundaries of Johannesburg and have a monthly income not exceeding R5 308.20. “After six months from the time you register, you need to come back and re-register because over time people’s circumstance change. A person could be unemployed now, and get a job three months down the line, but someone else who may be employed now can lose their job after three months. So we want to ensure that people on the register are people who are supposed to benefit from ESP,” Cllr Phalatse concluded.

Shell SA launches Dynaflex Technology in fuels

SHELL South Africa today announced the launch of its next generation of advanced fuel formulations enhanced with DYNAFLEX Technology. The DYNAFLEX technology also includes a new additive for Shell V-Power 50ppm. “At Shell, we believe that it’s not where you go, it’s how you go that matters,” said Yaasier Abrahams, Retail Marketing Manager, Shell South Africa. “We developed this technology with customers at the centre. We know that our customers are going places, and whether they need to fill their vehicles or their tummies, we need to provide the solutions to make their journeys better.” Available in all of Shell’s fuel offerings, DYNAFLEX technology is the next evolution of petrol and diesel fuels. It’s a complex blend with powerful cleaning agents to enhance performance and protect from deposits to maintain engine efficiency. For diesel customers, Shell has developed a unique DYNAFLEX formulation, containing new dual-detergent molecules for a clean and efficient engine. This means diesel engines old or new can benefit as the fuel helps clean up engines even after just one tank and keeps it clean. Shell Diesel Extra also enables increased torque and load-pulling power. Ultimately, this fuel is designed to help customers get more out of their engines and lower operating costs. “Our commercial customers will experience major benefits with this new fuel formulation,” said Ashley Abrahams, National Sales Manager, Com-

mercial Fuels, Shell South Africa. “Designed for increased efficiency, our customers will enjoy better performance, improved operating costs, and maximising return on fleet investment. In fact, our Shell Diesel Extra with DYNAFLEX Technology can save customers up to 3% on fuel costs.” The new formulations were developed in-part to keep pace with evolving engine technology. Shell has more than 100 years of fuel innovation heritage, powered by its long-standing technical partnership with Ferrari dating back to the 1940’s. Shell V-Power petrol is the only fuel coengineered with and recommended by Ferrari. With thousands of hours of research and testing, this is the fuel with the best track record. The fuel that powers Scuderia Ferrari on the racetrack contains 99% of the same components as Shell V-Power petrol. Shell V-Power also comes recommended by BMW M, a relationship that spans into DTM Motorsport, a further testimony of Shell V-Power’s performance on testing grounds with higher stress levels than a normal road car. For nearly half a century, BMW M has been building worldclass cars by merging engineering with cutting edge technologies, aligning well with Shell’s heritage of innovation in fuels. This is why Shell V-Power with DYNAFLEX Technology, designed for the best cleaning and protection formulation, is our best performance fuel and the fuel with the best track record.

Mophela to represent SA in the world Cup of the Danone Nations Cup IT’S exciting times for the under-12 soccer team from Mophela Primary. It is not long to go now before they board the plane for New York City to represent South Africa at the Danone Nations Cup world soccer finals. The Hammarsdale school from KwaZulu-Natal won the Danone Nations Cup South African title earlier in the month and went straight into school holidays. They are back now and are hard at work as they prepare for the opportunity of a lifetime. The school is based in a rural area outside Pinetown and the only field available to them is an open area a 3km walk away, which the kids walk every day to attend training. The team’s coach Siyabonga Ndimande says that they are all looking forward to the experience of watching other countries play, how they train and their general approach to the game. “We have an exceptionally talented group of players,” he said. “Six of them have been signed up by the Amazulu youth academy and one was recognized by Mamelodi Sundowns at the nationals. That’s a great opportunity for the kids, and it has motivated them even further.” Among those who will be playing at Amazulu next season are Lwazi “Junior” Magwanyana, and Njabulo Ndlovu. Both are experienced in the Danone Cup - this was their third year in the competition - and Ndimande will be relying on them in New York. Magwanyana is a central defender who has been playing soccer since grade 1. In Grade 5 he joined the ST Bay Football Club, along with Ndlovu, so they have been getting extra coaching there. “I made a lot of friends during the national finals, especially the players from the Western Cape,” said Magwanyana. “It’s going to be exciting going to New York to meet the other players from other countries, seeing the tall building there that we don’t have in South Africa and tasting the different food that they will have in New York,” he said. Njabulo Ndlovu is a striker. He started playing soccer in the streets with his friends at 5 and wants to become a professional soccer player. “I also have dreams of becoming a social worker so that I can help children that have home problems and make sure that they get proper education,” he said His parents are unable to take care of him so he lives in a children’s home, the Lily of the Valley, at the moment. Going to Amazulu will be a great opportunity for him. He is hoping to get into a school like Glenwood Boys’ High where he can stay in the school hostel. “This will really give me a good grounding for my future in both my education and my soccer. And to be able to say that I played in the Danone Nations Cup world finals in the USA is the ultimate achievement.” Before then, however, there’s plenty of hard work to be done in preparation for the trip. Passports have been applied for, Visa’s must be approved. Training has started and the parents of the players are all on board. The world finals will take place in New York from 22 - 24 September.

Chiefs beat Pirates to lift the 2017 Carling Black Label Cup AN early goal by Bernard Parker fired Kaizer Chiefs to a 1-0 win over Orlando Pirates in the Carling Black Label Champion Cup at the FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The competition, in its seventh year (Chiefs have now won it three times, Pirates four), is, of course, unique in that the starting line-ups and substitutes are decided by the supporters via a voting system, and not by the coaches. Nevertheless, the victory against their biggest rivals would have given Glamour Boys tactician Steve Komphela a nice shot of confidence as he approaches his third season in charge, under pressure to bring in some major silverware. Pirates head coach Kjell Jonevret, meanwhile, appears to be treading on thin ice, as speculation continues to increase that former Sea Robbers coach Milutin “Micho” Sredojevich is to return to the club after ending his time with the Uganda national side.

Jonevret’s side showed some character in the second half, but it was Chiefs who dominated most of the opening stanza in Soweto. The win means Chiefs have narrowed the gap in terms of winning this competition as this was their third title as opposed to Pirates who have won it four times. Meanwhile the SA Football Association is deeply sadened by the tragedy at FNB Stadium during this match and has since sent their sincere condolences to the family members of those who lost their lives. “We are going to ask for a full report and institute a full investigation on what transpired and the cause for the stampede,” said SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan. “I would also like to wish the injured speedy recovery. A football match is supposed to be a place of entertainment. What happened to at FNB Stadium is very unfortunate,” he added.

Limpopo businessman buys Milano United FOOTBALL fanatics around Thohoyandou and Giyani have a reason to smile as they will lack no action, WRITES NGOAKO MACHETHE. This after businessman, Masala Mulaudzi of Tshakhuma in Venda, Limpopo bought the status of Milano United before he could relocate the club to Tshakhuma. The club has since been renamed Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila FC (TTM), the name they have been using for their ABC Motsepe League. The club chairman, Humbulani Mphephu has confirmed to Kasie Focus that the Premier Soccer League has since approved the relocation. “I can confirm that we have already started with our preparation for the new season in the NFD. We are currently training at the Giyani Stadium.” pointed out Mphephu. He also confirmed the appointment of Sello Chokoe as their head coach while Solly Luvhengo has been appointed technical director. “We will be using Thohoyandou Stadium as our home with Giyani and Peter Mokaba Stadiums as our alternatives,” added Mphephu. Mphephu said the club has an option of offering

contracts to Milano United’s players, but it is up to them players to take the offers. “We are already campaigning to lure for some

supporters across the province as we are not planning just add numbers in the NFD but to compete with the aim of challenging for promotion in the next season,” he concluded. The latest development is a relieve for the province of Limpopo’s football fraternity after Magesi FC were relegated from the NFD back to the ABC Motsepe League after only one season in the league. This means TTM FC will be competing for the same supporters with Black Leopards around Venda, more so because they will also be using the same venue and it looks like fans around that area will enjoy the derby between the two sides. Recently owners of clubs have been selling their statuses since the Premiership went on a recess. Thanda Royal Zulu were the first to sell their Absa Premiership status when they sold to AmaZulu soon after they earned promotion to the top flight. Another club which sold their status is the NFD side, FC Cape Town sold their status and the club has since been renamed Ubuntu Cape Town FC.
