PERSONAL STATEMENT Welcome to my portfolio. This is a brief selection of my best architectural and lighting design projects. If you ask: What is architecture? I will say that architecture are 3 words that determine my creativity: VISION, NATURE and TECHNOLOGY

Teardrop Concert Hall

Vision is an answer to the question. Architecture is a way to express certain manifestations, describe the problem and give it a solutions. With an architecture I can communicate with people and follow for their needs. The Modular Hearth

Nature is the inspiration that influences my designs. I translate our natural world into architectural scale. The unlimited inspiration is all around us and I believe that with better understanding of a nature we can create astonishing spaces. Technology is the tool. Following modern technologies, implementing newest systems, experimenting with different possibilities, architecture opens up the door for greater human development. The biggest excitement and challenge I find when I create my design influenced by a material the we feel but we can’t touch.

Light Pavilion

Light Connection

THE LIGHT Light in architecture determines us, our mood and behavior. My biggest passion is to play with it. To test how space changes according to the light situation, how daylight enters the room, how an artistic light installations makes us feel in a space. I believe that light is the key for architecture and has important role in our life.

Light, Darkness, Color Pavilions

Currently I am doing to my master thesis project at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture in Architectural Lighting Design program. “Creating Woodland- FORESTARIUM” is a project presenting an artistic concept to communicate the importance of forests through architecture, daylight and nature. If you wish to read more about my upcoming project, please take a look into my program: https://issuu.com/katarzynakrawczuk/docs/katarzyna_krawczuk_ald_forestarium_ After finishing my studies in July 2017 I am looking for creative job opportunities in architecture and lighting design. Being always eager to learn and discover I feel well prepared and motivated to start a new chapter in my professional life.

TEARDROP CONCERT HALL Master program at Wrocław Univeristy of Technology Interior design

Back in time, primary concert halls such as amphitheater, were built as an open-venues. The performances were integrated with nature and created more emotional sense of experience. The main concept for the Teardrop Concert Hall was the unity with outside environment and impression of the open space. The biggest focus is put on the glass honey-comb copula, that provides a lot of daylight into interior and gives a feeling of the performance on the open area. Round shaped plan provides good acoustical reflections, therefore the stage and auditorium seats are designed in oval shape. The Teardrop Concert Hall project is a concept of small, vast, public space. It was created for human experience of lightness , surrounding and light accompanied with sounds of instrumental music.

THE MODULAR HEARTH The Royal Danish Academy of FIne Arts and Architecture Product design

The word hearth derives from an Indo-European root, *ker-, referring to burning, heat, and fire. It also describes the most important spot in the space where people can gather together in one place. Back in a days, hearth in a house was related to campfire, usually in the middle of the building, where people used to eat together. In The Modular Hearth Installation is the concept of a light installation designed according to the hearth principle. The installation is placed in the context of Nikolaj Kunsthallen art center in the center of Copenhagen, that used to be a church. This installation plays the role of a modern altar and reminds of the primary function of that building and gather visitors in a middle of the church.

Details

The installation consists of 3 types of cubical modules that can be connected in each corner creating various shapes of the whole installation. The concept was supported by 3 hand- made 1:1 scale lighting fixtures. The frame is made of steel pipes with wiring inside. LED light sources are covered by semitransparent textile to give the contrast to metal frame and provide smooth light transition.

THE NET HOSTEL Wrocław Univeristy of Technology Public architecture

The Net Hostel presents the idea of a luxurious hostel filling a gap between two townhouses in the North part of city Wroclaw. The concept joins the inspiration from the world of water animals and insects. The shape of building resemble the streamline movements of fish and the façade imitate spider web in a relation to strength and fragility. Front side of building contains two blocks with hotel rooms that are slightly shifted between each other. The building shape expand horizontally into the courtyard imitating the movement of fish tale. Hotel facilities such as common room, kitchen, entertainment room and accessible green terrace are designed inside the courtyard for relaxing and quiet atmosphere for hotel guests. The aluminum openwork panels of the facade provides changing play of daylight and creates atmospheric shadows in the interior. The hotel initially stands out from the surrounding, giving an interesting view from the street.

THE LIGHT CONNECTION Student comeptition “Fladen på Facaden”, Copenhagen, Denmark Architectural Lighting Design

The Light Connection is a project of façade design for the student competition for Copenhagen Commune. It was presented in the final ceremony as well as on the exhibition at The Royal Danish Academy. The project proposal concept for façade of the Citizens center creates an attractive entrance to the building. The Citizens Center is a place connecting city and it’s citizens. It basis on relationship between people and municipalities. The idea of Light Connection presents smooth transition between day and night. The façade is decorated by glossy and mirrored dome pattern. Inside of some of the domes, a light luminaire is placed focusing on the dome nearby. During the day they reflect sun rays and during the night the façade reveals connection formed by light. The luminaires are programmed to dim that the whole scenery would create the breathing effect encouraging the citizen to visit the place also during the night.

LIGHT, DARKNESS, COLOR PAVILIONS Bachelor diploma project at Wrocław Univeristy of Technology Temporary Architecture

The LIGHT|DARKNESS|COLOR Pavilions is a diploma project designed at Wroclaw University of Technology as well as for LAMP Lighting Awards 15’ competition. Every city has a lot of spaces of hidden location and unappealing surrounding. Even though those places seem to be not worth visiting, they have a potential to present a valuable area to explore in a city. For the reason of changing a repulsive place into an attractive area, three exhibition pavilions have been designed as a movable and temporary structure, that can be described in city travel maps. Each of them is designed to represent topic about light, darkness and color. The idea came from declaration of 2015 as the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies. LIGHT | DARKNESS | COLOR pavilions provides unique way to present lighting possibilities and educate people about how light is important in modern life. Light affect our mood and creates special atmosphere in the interiors. By the interesting shape of designed pavilions, they encourage to enter and explore the magic of light, darkness and color.

The first from 3 exhibition pavilions describes the theme of daylight. The cover of pavilion is designed as openwork to let the light penetrate into the interior. Scattered shadows create cozy and warming atmosphere. Suspended mirrored cubes are placed In the middle of hallway to reflect sun rays and enlighten the space. 3d model

The Light pavilion is a modern type of public library. The books are left on the shelves, by those who are not using them anymore and can be reused by new readers. Inside we can find six modules of so-called “cradle” sitting places. Each of them consist of rattan boxes attached to the ceiling, stairs, shelves for books and rattan bench on the floor. With such a lightness and purity in structure, the pavilion provides relaxation and harmony for the booklovers.

Construction of pavilions

Detail A zoom

All pavilions in LIGHT | DARKNESS | COLOR project resemble rotated cube and are based on similar construction. They consist of steel frames attached to steel footing made of C-profiles. Due to the fact that pavilions are mobile structures, they are not permanently attached to the ground the footing is fixed by 1m long anchors in the ground to make the pavilions stable.

The frames are made of I300 steel beams and are strengthen in the joints by T300 beams to resist loading forces of the structure. Detail A

This construction don’t include any columns, so the detail between steel footing and the frame was designed on the “mortise and tenon” joint system. The steel frame (tenon) is ejected to specially designed steel form (mortise) on the footing and then screwed on both sides. All the construction was custom designed and was tested on the 1:20 scale model.

The Darkness pavilion represent the opposite theme for the Light pavilion. Its purpose is to distinguish the magic of darkness and light in a universe. The pavilion is an art gallery. Inside we can find path created from sloped ramps that guide us between sculptures of planets and allow to see the exhibits from every angle. The sculptures are suspended on the glass panels and painting or photography are placed underneath accessible ramp. Small LED stars suspended from the ceiling and projector for video mapping provide the only source of light in pavilion’s interior to keep the space dark.

SYMBIOTIC VIBRATION Competition project during internship at ACT Lighting Design* Landscape Lighting Design

During my internship at ACT Lighting Design in Brussels, Belgium, I participated in the concept lighting design of Vorobyovy Gory park in Moscow, Russia. Symbiotic Vibration project was selected together with 5 other project of lighting design companies. The project basis on introducing lighting concept in the park, embankment and street in Vorobyovy Gory area. The main idea behind the project is to form a symbiosis between to contradictory elements that share the same space. Artificial lighting and nature are presented as unity in Symbiotic Vibration project. There are 3 areas in a competition scpe: the street, park and embankment. The project includes functional lighting that provides safe walk on the street together with interesting gobo light patterns along the alley. Lighting in the park was inspired by firefly blinking light and creates romantic atmosphere. On the embankment we placed horizontal line that can be seen from the opposite side of the water. Most of the luminaires are based on smart lighting system, that are activated only when someone is passing by, respecting the natural darkness for the nocturnal animals at the park. The lighting was also design for the World Cup that will take place in 2018 in Moscow. For that reason the project engage the park to the stadium on the opposite side with light beams of Moving Heads. As an intern in ACT Lighting Design I was responsible for the creative concept formulation. Together with a project manager I worked on the idea and smart solutions for the park lighting. The project was supported by suggestion of specific luminaires systems, lighting scenarios and detailed budget.
