KELLY GOES TO CAMBODIA Kelly Oostenbroek

Bachelor of Photogwraphy graduate from Griffith University’s Queensland College of Art

I love the ability a photograph has to capture a moment in time and tell a story. There are so many different stories and beautiful moments in the world and I will never stop trying to capture them.

I

n January 2012, a group of photojournalism students (including myself ) and tutors from Griffith University’s Queensland College of Art (QCA) travelled overseas to document stories in Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam, in particular, the work of non-government organisations (NGOs) in the area. I love the ability a photograph has to capture a moment in time and tell a story. There are so many different stories and beautiful moments in the world and I will never stop trying to capture them.

- What made you start photography? I was always a creative, arty sort of person, but when it came to drawing and painting, I wasn’t too great. When my parents gave me a little compact point-and-shoot camera for my 16th birthday, it hardly left my side. I fell completely in love with photography and it’s become my avenue for expressing my creativity ever since. - Where would you like to travel next? I’d love to go to France and Austria. Anywhere cold, snowy and foggy really. I’d also love to go to the Festival of colours in India one day.

- Do you have any current plans for the future and where do you hope photography will take you?

- Do you have any photographers that you feel influence your work, or inspired you to develop your own practice?

At the moment I’m just trying to shoot as much as I can - anything and everything. I hope that one day photography will become my whole source of income and that I might be able to also use it for the benefit of others perhaps through an aid organisation.

I don’t really have any one specific person or people who I can say influence my work. I’m influenced by a range of photographs and photographers I see from day to day.

his is a series I did for my final portfolio for my Bachelor of Photography in the Creative Advertising stream. This work, titled Domestic Absurdity, looks at the psychological affects that surrealism has upon viewers when they engage with still life small product advertising imagery. I sought to present a banal object in a new light to challenge the experience that the viewer has with the world that they perhaps take for granted or give little emphasis to. By exaggerating the purpose of the items, being the domestic products, I was able to create visually exciting imagery that represented the product in non-outlandish terms while subconsciously arousing the viewer in greater cognitive thinking.

Colour and hand made sets are crucial within the work, acting as initial visual hooks (colour palette) and then sustains the viewers interest as they come to realise that the props and set are hand made form paper and card. I did receive a lot of positive feedback from this series as it won me the much anticipated accolade of Best Image from any Major 2012. Currently I am studying my Honours which looks at creating small product still life advertising images which further explore the psychological processes that surrealism initiates within a viewer, particularly when synthesised with adhering to and breaking visual schema (the rules that our minds unconsciously apply to determine what an object or scene is called based on the visual inputs of colour, shape, scale, relationship to each other and so on) www.rachelannephotography.com.au

hese images are from my final graduating folio from Bachelor of Photography, majoring in Creative Advertising. Titled Trapped in the Mind Room, the body of work looks at the concept of phobias and how we as humans are constantly fighting and struggling with their greatest fears. The women in the images adopt the persona of each phobia, struggling to take control but are trapped within a room. With these photographs, I wanted to invite the viewers to confront their own anxieties and explore the inner turmoil that is occurring in our “mind rooms” when faced with our greatest fears. By using a limited amount of props, I wanted to create images that people had to think about, a puzzle to figure out which image represented which phobia. The simplified images helped to highlight the small room and emphasize the claustrophobic nature of our minds when we are scared.

I’ve always loved scary movies and the exhilarating rush of adrenalin that you get every time you watch them. But I also know what paralyzing fear, in my case of heights, feels like as well. It’s not really something you have a huge amount of control over, even when you know that it’s all in your head. This is where the initial idea for this series came from. I wanted to explore the many different phobias that people around the world have and use the ideas behind them to create visually intriguing fashion images. I drew inspiration from a number of different artists, from fine art or fashion photographers to surrealist painters and music videos. Each artist I looked at helped to introduce me to a new and exciting way of thinking. It is this creative and alternative thinking that I would like to continue to use in all of my future bodies of work.
