HISTORY + MISSION
ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE
GenSpace, a nonprofit organization formed in 2009, is dedicated to furthering the research and community involvment of citizen scientists. The office is a membership based entity which allows for those to use the entire space for a small monhly fee. Known as a biohacker space, members come together to research and create art through biology while educating the student and adult population of the surrounding city.
A Post-Bureaucratic organizational structure is present within GenSpace, a company who is focused more on the communty they serve than furthering their success financially or for prestige. Employees are open to modern ideas and methodology which allows a network of trust to develop within the organizational structure and where decisions are made based on dialogue and consensus. At GenSpace there are fifteen permanent employees which manage the facility and ensure safe ethical practices are being adhered to among the 45 current members who cycle through the facility per week, educational lectures and tours to those interested in science, and the community whom are welcomed to attend informational meetings and exhibitions.
Dr. Ellen Jorgensen, Executive Director of GenSpace, collaborated with a group of fellow scientists to provide a safe environment to explore ethical genome projects. Along with their desire to advance research in scientific fields, professionals from varous disciplines were also encouraged to experiment and see where science could be taken in their fields. Artists and writers were among the greater number of entusiastic members who wanted to share the beauty of science to the world.
Executive Board
Synthetic biology is the main focus of GenSpace, utilizing their understanding of genetic engineering, the members reimagine organisms and biological products to safely experiment in their Level 1 Biosafety Laboratory. Simply put, DNA is engineered by scientists who select several chromosomes, each with their specific characteristics, and manufacture them together to present a new and interesting end product. It is through GenSpace’s level of expertise and knowledge in the field of synthetic biology that helps recruit new membership to the facility. The freedom to experiment for purpose of entertainment has helped to keep members in the community excited about the work being done inside this state of the art laboratory.

The Executive Board consists of Executive Director, Assistant Director, and Director of Research Legality. These positions are year long and are held by members of the GenSpace Community. Within the Department of Research Legality there are positions in Risk Management, Ethics, and Legal. The Adminisration Department consists of Secretarial Staff, Reception, Public Relations, and Member Relations. Each laboratory space is leased by a lead scientist and additional members who are collaborating on research and experimentation. Each group is responsible for R&D, Marketing, and Finance with their respective research. A proposal is presented to the Executive Board at a quarterly meeting to obtain the lease of the space. Smaller laboratory spaces are available for those projects that are not in need of the square footage and equipment that is present in the larger leasable labratories.

CONCEPT The GenSpace corporate office design is informed by the uniqueness of synthetic biology, the primary work done in the state of the art community research laboratory. It is through the practice of deconstruction and reengineering of DNA that the space will emulate for its design. Mimicing how synthetic biology creates seemless transitions when integrating newly introduced characteristics, a overall pleasing pallette will be the foundation for the highly intelligent work to be done. This aesthetic will allow for personalization in each area of the office. A gradation in the mixing of textures, creates a balance that will be reached and an overall harmony will be evoked.

PROGRAM
SOLUTION The design of the GenSpace Community Research Laboratory is characterized as transitonal. This aesthetic is present in the furnishings and partitions that are flexible in both the physical location within the space and how it is used by members. Because of the constant turnover of users throughout the day the space allows for a freedom to maneuver and interact with installed elements. Various types of spaces are also available to provide choice. Whether a member wants to work solitarily at a workstation or in a group in the collaboration space, everyone will feel welcomed and comfortable. Live vegetation is integrated for not only research uses but to provide a natural air filtration system, providing a higher concentration of oxygen which is needed for optimum brain function. Natural views are also present creating a peaceful experience while in GenSpace. Enriching not only the mind but body as well, the newly designed office incorporates relaxed seating and cozy materials to help recharge.
GOALS 1. Allow of flexibility of the furnishings within spaces 2. Utilize moveable partitions to change the shape and size of rooms 3. Allow employees to move about freely in the space without obstacles 4. Create an intuitive wayfinding system to easily distinguish functions of spaces 5. Integrate vegetation seamlessly into the design 6. Provide outdoor view without restricting the majority of natural daylight

Approaching the entrance of GenSpace, a member will be welcomed with a large curtain wall which frames the tranquil interior of the reception area. Sleek lines and modern furniture are used throughout allowing for the space to feel open and blend into the surroundings allowing for a blank slate to research such highly intelligent subjects.
25
ENTRANCE
The open office environment in GenSpace provides plenty of seating along with various arrangements for members to choose from. Solid oak floors cover the majority of the office allowing for the slow tranquil transition between each space.
27
OPEN OFFICE
GenSpace brings the excitement for science to the community and as such the classroom setting is large enough for students to attend presentations yet cozy to be used a breakout space for the member scientists. Broadloom carpet is installed in the bleacher seat style auditorium and custom cushions provide comfort.

Overlooking the office below, the mezzanine is where the executive suite is situated. Glass walls and an absence of doors allows for natural daylight to flood into the private areas upstairs and aids in reducing exclusivity.
MEZZANINE
32
Below the mezzanine an overhang provides the natural space for a lounge with custom nooks. Here members can relax and have impromptu meetings or recharge in a nook which is perfect for those seeking prospect and refuge.
33
LOUNGE
At the end of the long office is a collaboration area and greenhouse that is framed by large windows. Research is done within the greenhouse and the greenery also provides the foundation for the natural air filtration system integrated into the space.
