PR OJEC T BRIEF

The book will be 32 pages – which equates to (8) 4 page signatures. These terms will be further explained in class. The size of the book is open – but keep in mind that the printed signatures have to fit on the lab computers – not to exceed 12 x 18. If you use a hard cover of different stock for the cover than the text pages – you would refer to the book as 28 pages plus cover. (Again, to be discussed in class.) Refer to the attached page to understand the page and content layout details. The final product will be a complete, 32 page book, including cover – cleanly executed with excellent craft and void of typos. Spell check carefully. In addition to the physical book, you will need to submit (3) – high resolution – digital photos of the cover, contents spread and a typical recipe spread. These will be great resources for your personal portfolio.

FINAL DESIGN

CRITIQUE SUMMARY

The critique on the Cookbook final project was extremely beneficial. Once upoloading the final verision to Issuu I realized that seeing it on a large screen made it easier for me to find incorrect grammar, incorrect hyphenations, and the need to adjust justification on paragraphs. Sarah our TA sat down with me one on one to go over the hierarchy of my cookie recipies. With her help I was able to establish a set three column grid for my ingredients in all lower case text, followed by a justified paragraph setting including a paragraphe rule for the directions. After the critique I also fixed the issue of hyphens into end dashes, and altered my color palette to be cohesive throughout the book.

WRIT TEN STATEMENT

Reflecting on my time spend in Typography II at SUNY Fredonia I realize how much I have learned. Each project was structured to build your skills for the following project. My favorite out of all three this semester definitely would be the final Cooki book assignment. In the beginning i assumed that it would cause me nothing but confusion and put me through some of the hardest challenges I have yet to face. Althought that assumption was not false, It was a smoother ride all thanks to the constant peer critiques in class along with the gradual review one on one meetings from the professor and the TA. In the beginning of this project I struggled the most with setting up the flat plan layout of my book. What really helped me solidify my design was the book The Bake in the Day Bakery Cookbook by Cheryl Day and Griffith Day. I realized that I wanted ten set cookie recipies that followed a three column grid for the ingredients along with a seperate paragraph that included the directions to make the cookies. Once choosing Italian Christamas cookies I was positive that I wanted to use the colors of green, white, red, and blue throughout the book. Once setting up my book it totaled fourty-two pages with ten recipes. I was happy with the structure but realized I had not included a step by step diagram yet. I decided to photograph how to add icing to the Italian Sugar cookies, illustrate how to apply egg wash to the Cassatedde, and also illustrate how to start the dough for the Italian Knot cookies. WIth my illustrations i stuck with the color scheme of blue, white, and green. Overall this project was very successful and is a book that I plan to have printed and photographed for my portfolio. I made many changes following the inclass critique and I could not have completed this without the help of Sarah, Tanya, and Chelsea. I’m very pleased the the final cohesive design and I look forward to designing my next book.
